Winnifred (Winnie) Kathryn (Harrington) Peterson

Winnifred (Winnie) Kathryn (Harrington) Peterson, 86, died Sunday, August 22, 2010 at Oak Meadow Residences in Oak Dale, Minnesota.

Winnie was born on April 1, 1924 in Alpena, South Dakota. The date was important to her being April Fools Day. The date brought much happiness to her and she loved to share the emotion with friends and family.

The Visitation (Celebration of LIfe) was held from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, August 26, 2010 at Willwerscheid Funeral Home in St. Paul, Minnesota. The Funeral Service was held at Immanuel Lutheran Church at Goodrich and Snelling, St. Paul at 11 a.m. Friday, August 27th, 2010. Internment was held at Fort Snelling Cemetery immediately following the service.

Winnie Harrington and Warren Peterson, were married on Saturday, December 6, 1941 at Trinity Lutheran Church in St. Paul Minnesota. The couple were blessed with three sons, Charles (Chuck), Stanley (Stan) and William (Bill). Her personality was such that she would light up a room when she entered, she never met a stranger, and it was said “she could have a party in a phone booth.” She was a track star in high school and was the Speed Skating Champion at the St. Paul Winter Carnival one year.

Before retiring, she worked many years in the insurance business as an adjuster and finally, as the office manager for a large insurance firm based in St. Paul. She was a bit of a dare devil always enjoying something new from riding a motor cycle, to sky diving, but never got around to the diving part. The family is not sure if Winnie had a “bad bone” in her body, but they never saw any evidence of any bad bones. She was always positive and when asked how she was she would come back with “fine as frogs hair; or happy as a skunk eat’n bugs. “ If she hadn’t seen a grand child for a while she would say: “Are your folks putting fertilizer in your shoes? They must have the way you’re growing.” She enjoyed handing out her business cards that read: “Winnie Peterson- Retired...My job is to have fun!” For years, she had lunch with a group of ladies she was confirmed with. They would have lunch at the Lexington. One day she had a chauffer come in the restaurant and told the group: “Your limo awaits your pleasure.” The girls spent the afternoon drinking pink champaign riding around the old neighborhoods in a white-stretch limo.

Besides celebrating her April 1 birthday, St. Patrick's Day was important to her. She never missed a parade and ended the day at Ogara’s Irish Pub. (By the way, she requested that she be barried with a copy of her beloved St. Paul Pioneer Press and a menu from Ogara’s Pub. Her dad was 100% Irish). She and Warren enjoyed travel. If it wasn’t a weekly motor trip, it might have been a trip to Germany (all three sons were stationed there). They enjoyed themselves in Germany so much so, that they became members of the German Cultural Club of St. Paul. A great cook she was not..however, it turned out that egg fu yung was her specialty. Warren would help cut the vegetables and she made a sauce that really was outstanding.

Youngest son Bill used to say: “Egg fu yung, egg fu yung, every Sunday egg fu yung.” He hated all types of egg fu yung! She had a fake orange tree in one of the sunrooms. She used to tease the grandchildren, pointing out that it was a good crop for the year, until a “new” grand child picked one of the plastic oranges off the tree and attempted to eat it. The child had to be discouraged from doing that again. She took a fake six foot snake and put it in the branches of the tree to keep young hands off this forbidden fruit. It worked! During her last hospital visit, a nurse asked her if there was anything else she could get for her. Winnie responded-”Yes, maybe a rich old guy.” The nurse responded-”What about a young one?” “She said “that’ll work too.”

Winnie was preceded in death by her parents, Father Ira and Mother Selma (Gunderson), brothers, Alvin, Walter, Melvin and Ira and husband Warren Melvin Peterson.

She is survived by sons: Charles, Stanley (Marie) and William, 5 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and many near and dear nieces and nephews. The family thanks the staff at Oak Meadows, and Hospice for the special care they gave Winnie.

Special recognition needs to be given niece Gayle Harrington, who in the later years of Winnie’s life was important in her daily life in so many ways.

Gayle’s time, efforts and commitment to Winnie is appreciated in more ways than words can convey.
