Melvin J. Popp

Melvin J. Popp, age 77, of Osage, passed away Tuesday, June 22, 2010, at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center Emergency Room in Osage.

Mass of Christian Burial was held 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 25, 2010, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage with Rev. John Moser, Msgr. John Hemann and Msgr. Joseph Slepicka officiating. Interment was in Sacred Heart Cemetery with military honors at the grave by Osage American Legion Post 278 and Osage V.F.W. Post 7920.

Mel was born in rural Mitchell County on June 12, 1933, to John and Frances (Falk) Popp. He attended rural school and graduated from Osage High School in 1951. Mel served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. On July 5, 1958, he married Dorothy Fox at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage.

Mel farmed and operated Popp Backhoe and Trenching until his retirement. He looked forward to his annual Canadian fishing trips and spending time with his family. Mel was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage, the Knights of Columbus, Osage American Legion, and Osage V.F.W. He was also a Rock Township trustee and was chairman of the Osage Rural Fire Board.

Mel is survived by his wife, Dorothy; his daughter, Deb and her sons, Brad and Dan Evans, his son, Dennis (Kim) and their sons, Adam, Joe and Ben, his son, Dan (Jill) and their children, Jared, Jadie, Josie and Jace, his daughter, Diane and her children, Katie, Jim and Jenna Plotzke, and his daughter, Donna (Brian) Bruesewitz and their children, Maddie and Melanie, all of Osage. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Don.


Viola Rachut Ehlke

Viola Ida Rachut Ehlke, age 87, of Osage, died Wednesday, June 30, 2010, at Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 6, 2010, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Osage with Rev. Roy Ott officiating. Burial was at the St. Ansgar Cemetery in St. Ansgar, Iowa. Viola was born December 19, 1922, in Rock Township, Mitchell County, Iowa, the daughter of Edward Rachut and Ida (Duenow) Ruehlow Rachut. She was baptized into the Lutheran faith on January 14, 1923, and was confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Rock Township, on March 21, 1937. Viola attended Rock Township Grade School through 8th grade and graduated from St. Ansgar High School in 1941.

She married August John Ehlke on June 24, 1945, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Rock Township. They farmed north of St. Ansgar until 1962 when they moved to a farm west of Osage, farming there until retiring in 1982. Viola was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church and was a member of the Martha Circle. She was also a member of the Sunshine Circle. Viola enjoyed going to the Osage Senior Center and Hardee’s for dinner, one day bus trips, rummage sales and embroidery.

Viola is survived by two daughters, Joanne (Gary) Hyland of Orchard, Carolyn (Phil) Tommeraas of Zumbro Falls, Minnesota; a grandson, Jason (Tricia) Hyland of Waynesboro, Georgia; a great-grandson, Cole Hyland; and her special friend, Helen Duck of Osage.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, August in 1997; four half-brothers, Alvin, Harvey and Roy Rachut, and Walter Ruehlow.
Bentley Boerjan

Bentley Eugene Boerjan, infant son of Stephanie Ackerman and Mitchell Boerjan, was stillborn Saturday, July 3, 2010, at Methodist Hospital in Rochester Minnesota.

Bentley was brought into our lives at 12:40 p.m. and weighed one pound, 5.6 ounces, and was eleven inches long. Parents Stephanie and Mitchell had the joy of holding, kissing, and cuddling little Bentley.

He was here for a short time but has left a lifetime of memories. A prayer service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Thursday, July 8, 2010, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage with Rev. John Moser officiating. There will be time for relatives and friends to greet the family in the Sacred Heart Church Hall after the service.

Left to cherish him are his parents, Stephanie and Mitchell; grandparents, Becky Secrist and Chuck Hurley, Randy and Deanna Trytten, Lance and Brenda Boerjan; many great-grandpas and great-grandmas; one great-great-grandma, Dorothy Simpson; uncles and aunts, Jordan Ackerman and friend, Keirston Johnston, Trevor Secrist, Tyler Hurley, Jaci and George Schorg, Mitch and Nicole Trytten, Amber Trytten and friend, Zach Witt, Kyle and Ashley Trytten; and many great-aunts, greatuncles and cousins.

Bentley was preceded in death by his grandpa, Sean Ackerman; great-grandpa, Raymond Power; greatgrandpa, Melvin Heaps; great-grandpa, Roger Trytten; and great-uncle, John Penney.
Lucas Farlinger

Ames, IA—Lucas Rueben Farlinger, 22, of Ames, formerly of St. Ansgar, IA died at his residence July 20, 2010.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, July 24, 2010 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Lyle, MN with Rev. Barbara Finley-Shea officiating. Burial was in Woodbury Cemetery, Lyle, Minnesota. Lucas Rueben Farlinger was born October 2, 1987 in Austin, MN to Carl and Lisa (Mauer) Farlinger.

He graduated from St. Ansgar High School in 2006 and attended NIACC. He was currently a senior at ISU majoring in Information Management Systems, and was employed by Maverick Software Consulting in Ames, IA. Lucas liked building computers, gaming, cooking and organic foods.

He was preceded in death by his great-grandparents Rueben and Elizabeth Nasby, John Farlinger, Frank and Elizabeth Mauer and Ernest and Clara Adams.

Lucas is survived by his parents Carl and Lisa Farlinger; brother Caleb, sister Marisa, girlfriend Alyssa Francis; great-grandmother Alta Farlinger; grandparents Earl and Marlene Farlinger, and Dale and Theresa Mauer.
