Elvin "Al" Andrew Toppin, 79, of Clear Lake, Iowa, died on
Thursday, November 5, 2009, at the Muse-Norris Hospice
Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa.
Funeral services were held
on Monday, November 9, at 1:30 p.m., at the Eden
Presbyterian Church rural Rudd, with Rev. John Bates
officiating. Visitation was on Sunday, from 5-7:00 p.m., at
the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake. Interment
was in the Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City. Military
Honors were provided by the Clear Lake V.F.W. Memorials may
be made to the Elvin A. Toppin Memorial Fund to be given to
the Eden Presbyterian Church and the Clear Lake V.F.W.
Elvin, was born on October
8, 1930 in Winnebago, Minnesota, the son of Harlan Clare and
Doris A. (Scott) Toppin. He graduated from the Ventura High
School in 1948. He farmed with his brother, Wayne in the
Ventura area. He married Donna Jean Brandau on September 9,
1950 and began farming in the Rudd area. Elvin served in the
U.S. Army during the Korean War. Following an honorable
discharge he came back to farming. Donna Jean died in 1978.
He married Joyce Fulk on
January 14, 1984, at the Eden Presbyterian Church. In 1993,
Elvin retired from farming and he and Joyce moved to Clear
Lake.
He was a member of the
Eden Presbyterian Church where he held numerous positions,
former member of the Rudd Elevator where he served on the
Elevator Board and was also named "Outstanding Young Farmer
of the Year" by Floyd County. After retiring they delivered
Winnebago's, went to antique auctions, spent part of their
winters in Florida where they loved to walk along the beach
and hunt for shells. He also enjoyed golfing, bowling,
traveling, reading, dancing and playing cards. He was on the
Canteen Committee and the C.L. V.F.W. Honor Guard.
Elvin is survived by his
wife, Joyce Toppin of Clear Lake; two sons, Brad Toppin and
his wife, Linda of Charles City and Mark Toppin and Mary of
Waterloo; three step-sons, Bob Fulk of Rudd, Dennis Fulk of
Rudd and James Fulk and Candy of Rock Falls; two brothers,
Wayne Toppin and his wife, Ardith of Clear Lake and Jim
Toppin and his wife, Beverly of Phoenix, Arizona; sister,
Verla Stapleton and her husband, Mike of San Antonia, Texas;
ten grandchildren, Hollie Toppin, Erin Sansgard, Timothy
Toppin, Patrick (Andrea) Toppin, Jennifer Fulk, Michael
Shanahan, Noelle Toppin, Jacob (Tabitha) Toppin, Robbie Fulk
and Jon Esparza; and thirteen great-grandchildren.
Elvin was preceded in
death by his parents; and his first wife, Donna Jean.

Russel Kissel
November 9, 2009
Russel Kissel, age 90, of Osage, died on Saturday, November
7, 2009, at the Faith Lutheran Home in Osage.
Following his wishes, his
body was donated to the University of Iowa. Private services
will be held at a later date. The Champion-Bucheit Funeral
Home in Osage is in charge of the arrangements.

Lloyd Milton
November 11, 2009
Lloyd Milton, age 99, a lifetime Mitchell County resident,
passed away on Tuesday, November 10, 2009, at the Stacyville
Nursing Home.
Funeral services will be
held at 10:00 a.m., on Saturday, November 14, at the
Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage, with Pastor Gary
Gilbert officiating. Burial will be in the Little Cedar
Cemetery. Visitation is from 6:30-8:00 p.m., on Friday, at
the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage.
Lloyd, was born on June 7,
1910, on the family farm near Little Cedar, the son of Henry
H. and Agnes (Mitchell) Milton. He attended Little Cedar
Schools and graduated in the class of 1928. He married
Sigrun Loden, the daughter of Erick and Dina Loden, on April
9, 1939, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They raised
three sons, H. E. (Gene), Gary and Robert. Lloyd farmed for
many years near Little Cedar on the family Century Farm,
before moving to Osage in the fall of 2002.
Lloyd is survived by his
sons, Gene (Bonnie) Milton of Washburn, Gary (Barbara)
Milton of Apple Valley, Minnesota and Robert (Linda) Milton
of Glendale, Arizona; seven grandchildren; and ten
great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death
by his parents; his wife of 49 years, Sigrun; a sister,
Laura Ethen; and brothers, William, Leslie and Maurice
Milton.

Lola Kittleson
November 17, 2009
St. Ansgar, Iowa--Lola
Kittleson, 96, of St. Ansgar, died on Tuesday, November 10,
2009, at the St. Ansgar Good Samaritan Society, St. Ansgar,
of complications related to diabetes.
Funeral services were held
at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, November 14, at the First
Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar, with Rev. Robert Porisch
officiating. Burial was in the First Lutheran Cemetery.
Visitation was on Friday evening from 4-7:00 p.m., at the
Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, St. Ansgar.
Lola Clara Dieterich, was
born on November 30, 1912 in Floyd County, Iowa, the
daughter of Carl John and Bertha Amelia (Kroneman) Dieterich.
She was baptized at the St. John's Lutheran Church in Cedar
township. In 1920, her family moved to a farm two miles
south of St. Ansgar. On January 24, 1943, she was married to
Carl B. Kittleson of St. Ansgar, at the Dieterich farm home,
in a snow storm. This union was blessed with five children,
Charles Edward, Kermit Lee, Karla Jean, Mary Louise and John
Carl.
Lola was a wonderful cook
and seamstress, and really enjoyed quilting both for her
herself and family, as well as numerous quilts for her
church projects. She was active in her church and Deborah
Circle activities most of her life. Each Christmas she would
make peppernuts and lefse for her children and friends. She
loved her vegetable and flower gardens, and house plants;
which all benefited from her green thumb. She was a gracious
lady whose core values were demonstrated each day to her
family and friends. She always made you feel welcomed and
loved.
She was preceded in death
by her parents; her husband, Carl; three brothers, Arnold,
Ervin and Wilmer Dieterich; and by four sisters-in-law,
Agnes, Elaine, Evelyn and Janette Dieterich.
Lola is survived by her
children, Charles (Karen) and John (Carmen) of St. Ansgar,
Kermit (Sandy) of Hudson, Karla (Terry) Anderson of Iowa
City and Mary (Laird) Mott of Omaha, Nebraska; 15
grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one brother,
Lawrence Dieterich of St. Ansgar.

Clinton Anderson
November 17, 2009
Clinton Anderson, age 96,
of Osage, died on Thursday November 12, 2009, at the Osage
Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Osage.
Funeral services were held
at 10:30 a.m., on Monday, November 16, at the
Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage, with Pastor Gary
Gilbert officiating. Burial was in the Osage Cemetery.
Visitation was from 5-7:00 p.m., on Sunday, at the
Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage.
Clinton was born on May
19, 1913 in Viking, Alberta, Canada, the son of Philip and
Maude (Lee) Anderson. Clinton was united in marriage to
Maxine Nelson on June 3, 1939 in Malta, Illinois. They
farmed near Sycamore, Illinois, until moving to the Osage
area in 1972, where they continued farming. They moved into
Osage in 1983.
Clinton had served on the
Sycamore School Board. He also served on the Fox River
Production Credit Association, as an Approving Loan Officer
and was the Past President.
Clinton is survived by his
wife, Maxine Anderson of Osage; his two daughters, Loretta
(George) Hunt of Varna, Illinois and Judy Anderson of
Huntley, Illinois; his son, Dale (Carol) Anderson of Osage;
eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death
by his parents; two brothers; and one sister.

Steven Clifford
Birdsall
November 23, 2009
Steven Clifford Birdsall,
50, of Windsor, Colorado, passed away on Thursday, November
12, 2009, after a courageous battle with lung cancer.
Steven was born on
September 13, 1959 in Osage, Iowa, to Weston and Anne
Birdsall. He graduated from the Osage High School in 1978
and earned a B.S. in Civil Engineering from Colorado State
University in 1987. He married Julie Hartzell, the love of
his life, on December 29, 1984. Steven worked for Northern
Engineering in the late '80's, RBD Engineering in the '90's
and the City of Loveland, Colorado, Water Utility from
1997-2009.
Steven was involved in the
Osage Precisionnaires Drum and Bugle Corps in the late 70's
and enjoyed jazz music, hiking, nature, bird watching and
building his dream home. He was an avid supporter of all of
his daughter, Tayler's activities, the Colorado State
University Rams athletics and Iowa State and Iowa football.
He was a member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church, Ft.
Collins, Colorado and former board member of the Town of
Windsor Water and Sewer Board. Steven loved the Lord and is
no doubt happily helping the Master Carpenter build mansions
in Heaven!
Steven was preceded in
death by his sister, Susanne Baty.
He is survived by his
wife, Julie; daughter, Tayler; parents, Wes and Anne
Birdsall; sister, Sonne Nielsen (and Pat Doyle); brothers,
Scott (Debra) Birdsall and Shan (Tammy) Birdsall;
brother-in-law, Corliss Baty; 11 nieces and nephews;
great-nieces and great-nephews; and countless friends,
co-workers and associates.

Jane D. Kotz
November 23, 2009
Jane D. Kotz, age 78, of
Osage, died on Thursday, November 19, 2009, in the Hospice
Unit at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center.
Funeral services were held
at 10:00 a.m., on Saturday, November 21, at the Major
Erickson Funeral Home, with Pastor Dennis Hanson of the Our
Savior's Lutheran Church in Osage officiating.
Jane was born on June 5,
1931 in Castalia, Iowa, the daughter of Claude and Ruth
(Schroeder) Weaver. She was married to Stanley Kotz on
January 30, 1949. They farmed together near Rock Falls. They
also owned and operated Stan's Drive-In in Osage for nearly
25 years.
She was a member of the
Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City and a past member of
the Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Osage. She enjoyed
listening to country music, going for rides to look for
deer, reading and friends and family.
Left to cherish her memory
are her daughters, Debbie (Jim) Brakel of Sun City, Arizona,
Sheryl (Ed) Nikolas of Virginia Beach, Virginia and Dana
(David) Thompson of Osage; grandchildren, Jason (Kelly)
Nikolas of Virginia Beach, Jamie (Robert) Barclay of
Avondale, Arizona, Monica (Jeff) Dodd of Virginia Beach,
Jill Thompson and Jenna Thompson, both of Osage; five
great-grandchildren, Michael, Brooke, Jenna, Adam and Ryan
Olivia-Jane; and many nieces, nephews and in-laws.
She was preceded in death
by her parents; husband, Stanley Kotz; grandson, Joseph
Brakel; sister, Marlus (Jean) Kramer; and brother, Leland
(Dick) Weaver.

Fred "Fritz" Halbach, age
90, of Stacyville, Iowa, died on Thursday, November 19,
2009, at the Stacyville Community Nursing Home in
Stacyville.
A Mass of Christian Burial
was held at 10:30 a.m., on Tuesday, November 24, at the
Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville. Burial was in the
Visitation Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials
may be directed to The Parkinson's Institute, Sunnyvale,
California, the Stacyville Community Nursing Home,
Stacyville, Iowa or c/o The Fred Halbach Family, 413 South
Broad Street, Stacyville.
Frederick John Halbach,
was born on March 27, 1919 near Stacyville, the son of
Nicholas and Rose (Brumm) Halbach. He attended the
Visitation Grade School and graduated from the Visitation
High School. On November 26, 1942, Fred married Marcella
Gerhartz in Meyer. They farmed east of Stacyville. Fred and
Marcella retired and moved to Stacyville in 1980 and moved
to the Stacyville Community Nursing Home in 2006.
He was on the Board of
Directors of the Stacyville Creamery and was a
member/secretary of the Mitchell County Fair Board. He was
also a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters and the
Knights of Columbus. Fred volunteered in 4-H, church and
school activities. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling,
woodworking, gardening and traveling.
Fred is survived by two
daughters, Mary R. Clements of Hayward, California and Lynne
A. Fairbanks of Marion, Illinois; a son, Nicholas W. Halbach
of Hayward, California; a sister, Bertilla Mullenbach of
Rochester, Minnesota; a sister-in-law, Louise Halbach of
Osage; two brothers-in-law, Clem Gerhartz of Harpers Ferry
and Wilfred Gerhartz of Owatonna, Minnesota.
He was preceded in death
by his parents; his wife, Marcella Halbach in 2007; sisters,
Olive Hemann, Irene Kinney and Margaret Stolzenberg; and
brothers, Raymond, Wilfred and Alois Halbach.

Vera Halfman Walsh
November 23, 2009
Vera Mae Halfman Walsh,
age 74, of Osage, ended her earthly journey on Monday,
November 23, 2009, at the Mitchell County Regional Health
Center Hospice Unit, surrounded by her family.
A Mass of Christian Burial
will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Wednesday, November 25, at
the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage, with Rev. John
Moser officiating. There will be a Rosary at 10:00 a.m. at
the church before the service on Wednesday. Burial will be
in the Sacred Heart Cemetery. The family will greet
relatives and friends from 4-8:00 p.m., on Tuesday, at the
Sunny Brae Golf and Country Club, Osage.
The body will lie in state
from 4-7:00 p.m., on Tuesday, at the Champion-Bucheit
Funeral Home in Osage, where relatives and friends may call
to pay their respects.
Vera was born on June 18,
1935 in Stacyville, Iowa, the daughter of George and Helen (Hartogh)
Halfman. She attended the Visitation High School. On May 24,
1955, she married Ivan Walsh at the Visitation Catholic
Church in Stacyville. Vera was employed by the Osage
Community Schools as a cook for 26 years.
She was a member of the
Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Guild. Vera was a
faith-filled woman with many interests, including cooking,
baking, bible study, theater musicals, loving babies and
spending time with friends, family, the camping crew and the
birthday group for over 40 years. She enjoyed playing
dominoes, reading, shopping and "stitch 'n bitch". Vera
lived life to the fullest, especially these last seven
months with the diagnosis of acute myelogenous leukemia.
Vera is survived by her
daughters, Cindy (Mark) Schallock of Chanhassen, Minnesota
and their children, Ryan, Keely and Allison, Peggy (Doug)
Ledel of Savage, Minnesota and their daughter, Kenzie; her
sons, Chuck (favored dog, Packer) Walsh of Osage, Dave
(Jana) Walsh of Osage and their children, Caden and Jadee
Mae and Don (Carol) Walsh of Cedar Falls and their children,
Matt and Megan; brothers and sisters, Irma Hamm of Charles
City, Theresa Minard of La Porte City, Jim (Jan) Halfman of
Byron, Minnesota, Kathy (Denny) Borchardt of Mason City; and
brother-in-law, Leonard F. Walsh of St. Paul, Minnesota.
She was preceded in death
by her parents; her husband, Ivan Walsh in 1982; and a
sister, Mary Ann Popp.

Hubert "Hub"
Thorsen
December 1, 2009
Hubert "Hub" Thorsen, age 85, of Osage, died on Tuesday,
November 24, 2009, at his home in Osage.
Memorial services were
held at 11:00 a.m., on Monday, November 30, at the Our
Savior's Lutheran Church in Osage, with Rev. Dennis Hanson
and Rev. Roy Ott officiating. Inurnment was in the Osage
Cemetery in Osage, with military honors at the grave by the
Osage V.F.W. Post 7920.
Hub was born on November
5, 1924 in Osage, the son of Clarence and Olga (Havig)
Thorsen. Hub attended school in Osage and graduated from the
Osage High School in 1942. In 1943, Hub was inducted into
the United States Army. He served on the USS Hope and the
USS Mercy Hospital Ships throughout the South Pacific and
was honorably discharged in 1945. Hub was united in marriage
to Wanda Murphy on February 15, 1946, at the Little Brown
Church. They made their home in Osage.
Hub worked as a Postal
Clerk for the United States Postal Service for 38 years. He
was a Scout Master for over 20 years. Hub enjoyed fishing,
gardening and woodworking.
Hub is survived by his
wife, Wanda Thorsen of Osage; two sons, John Thorsen of
Hebron, Nebraska and Bill (Karen) Thorsen of Brighton,
Michigan; two daughters, Janet (Jim) Grinstead of Osage and
Shirley Van Scoyoc of Moore, Oklahoma; four grandchildren,
Krista Thorsen, Angele Bryant, Bunky Cabirac and Douglas Van
Scoyoc; three great-grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law,
Sonia Thorsen of Rockford, Illinois and Ruby Hawke of
Dumont.
He was preceded in death
by his parents; two brothers, Ray and Russ; two sisters,
Marge Heusman and Harriett Naden; one granddaughter; and one
great-granddaughter.

Joan Toye

Joan Toye, age 78, of Osage, died on Thursday, November 26,
2009, at the Faith Home in Osage.
A Mass of Christian Burial
was held at 10:30 a.m., on Tuesday, December 1, 2009, at the
Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage, with Rev John Moser
officiating. Burial was in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in
Osage.
Joan was born on July 31,
1931 at Stacyville, the daughter of John Salz, Jr. and Anna
(Wiesbrock) Salz. Joan was united in marriage to Omar Toye
on July 14, 1956, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in
Osage. They made their home in Osage. Joan worked for the AC
Nielsen Company in Mason City for 24 years and retired in
1990.
Joan was a member of the
Osage V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary for 50 years and the Sacred
Heart Catholic Church. She loved spending time with family
and friends. Joan enjoyed winter-time visits with Tom in Las
Vegas and her friends she made out there. She also enjoyed
reading.
Joan is survived by a
daughter, Deanna (Martin) Heavey of Boston, Massachusetts;
three sons, Tom Toye of Osage, Daniel Toye of Fort
Lauderdale, Florida and Tony Toye of Boscobel, Wisconsin;
four grandchildren, Kelleen and Martin Heavey of Boston,
Massachusetts, Hannah and Noah Toye of Boscobel, Wisconsin;
a sister, Frances Kratoska of Evansdale; and a brother, Jack
(Arlene) Salz of Mason City.
She was preceded in death
by her parents; her husband, Omar Toye in 1996; three
brothers and three sisters.

Marilyn Clark
Barnum
December 8, 2009
Marilyn Clark Barnum, 77, died on Thursday, November 26,
2009, at her home in Cushing, Maine, from kidney cancer.
A funeral service was held
on Thursday, December 3, at 1:00 p.m., at the St. Peter's
Episcopal Church on White Street in Rockland. The Rev. Glenn
Mahaffey officiated. Local funeral services will be held at
1:00 p.m., on Monday, December 14, at the First
Congregational Church, U.C.C. in Orchard, with Pastor Jan
Tjaden officiating. Burial will be in the Orchard Cemetery.
Following services the family will greet friends at the
church.
Marilyn was born and
raised in Orchard, Iowa. She attended college at the
University of Iowa, receiving her Bachelor's Degree in
Occupational Therapy. She began her career as an
occupational therapist at the Massachusetts Mental Health
Center, where she met and subsequently married Dr. William
Joseph Barnum Jr. in 1965. Marilyn and her husband, Bill,
moved to Maine in 1973, raising their family while she
continued working as an occupational therapist at the
Midcoast Mental Health Center until her retirement.
She was always an avid
gardener due to her Iowa roots as a farmer, and she enjoyed
learning about Native American/Southwest culture. Her
passions included tennis, cross country skiing, hiking,
boating and reading. She was actively involved in local
politics as Chairman of the Ordinance Committee in Cushing.
She is survived by her
daughter, Emily Clark Barnum and her spouse, Joanne; her
step-sons, Myles and Garrett, all of Littleton,
Massachusetts; her son, Jed Barnum of Cambridge,
Massachusetts; and one brother, Allen J. Clark of Minnesota.
In lieu of flowers,
memorial donations may be made to the Georges River Land
Trust, Rockland, Maine or to the American Occupational
Therapy Association Inc., Bethesda, Maryland. Arrangements
were made by the Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home
in Rockland and the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home.

Julia Bird
December 1, 2009
Julia Bird, age 99, of Riceville, passed away on Sunday
November 29, 2009, at the Stacyville Community Nursing Home
in Stacyville, Iowa.
Funeral services will be
held at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Riceville, Iowa on
Wednesday, December 2, at 1:00 p.m., with the Rev. Paul
Brown officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery
in Riceville. Friends may call on Tuesday, December 1,
during the hours of 4-6:00 p.m. and one hour before the
services at the funeral home on Wednesday.
Julia Elvira Bird, was
born on November 10, 1910 near Bassett, Iowa, to Robert and
Leora (Smith) Wiegle. Julia attended local rural schools and
at age ten moved with her family to Riceville. She graduated
from the Riceville High School and attended Normal College.
On October 26, 1932, Julia was united in marriage to Louis
Franklin Bird at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa.
They were hired by Hugh Minnis on a farm near McIntire,
Iowa. In 1936, they moved to a farm near Little Cedar and in
1939, they purchased that farm. In 1960, they moved to
Riceville to live in her mother's home on Woodland Avenue.
She later entered the Stacyville Community Nursing Home,
where she enjoyed visits from her extended family.
Julia worked as a school
teacher in her early years and was a cook at the Riceville
Rest Home. In her later years, Julia and Louis were in
charge of the Congregate Meals in Riceville for over ten
years. She was a member of the Riceville Baptist Church.
Julia enjoyed going to
garage sales and public auctions. She liked to sew, crochet
and refinish and re-cane furniture.
Survivors include her son,
Dale Mason Bird and his wife, Carol of Winona, Minnesota;
daughter, Jean Lois Kurkowski and her husband, Larry of
Jacksonville, Florida; two grandchildren, Stuart and his
wife, Carol Kurkowski and their children, Kayla and Jason of
Beavercreek, Ohio and Shayla and her husband, Travis and
their children, Maxwell and Mason of Jacksonville, Florida;
and a brother, Melvin "Pete" Wiegle of Riceville.
Julia was preceded in
death by her parents; her husband, Louis; and two brothers,
Everett and Neldon Wiegle.

Verna Lindley
December 8, 2009
Verna Lindley, 96, of Red Wing, died on Monday, November 30,
2009, at St. Brigid's Villa at Hi-Park.
A memorial service was
held at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, December 5, at the United
Lutheran Church, with Reverend Randall Johnson officiating.
Verna was born on February
17, 1913 in Mound Prairie, Minnesota, to Herman and Ida (Vix)
Papenfus. She grew up in Hokah, Minnesota and attended rural
schools in Houston County. Verna married Ralph Krick on June
1, 1933 in Waukon, Iowa and they lived in Caledonia where
they farmed until moving to Austin in 1951. Verna worked in
the dietary department at the St. Olaf Hospital in Austin.
Ralph died in January of 1955. She married Lee Lindley on
March 1, 1961 and they moved to St. Ansgar, Iowa, where they
lived until 1964. After Lee retired, they moved to Osage,
Iowa and Verna worked as activities director at the Faith
Lutheran Nursing Home in in Osage, until her retirement in
1976. Lee died November 29, 1988 and Verna moved to Red Wing
in 1989 to be closer to her family.
She enjoyed her family,
baking, painting and hardanger. She was a member of the
United Lutheran Church of Red Wing, Our Savior's Lutheran
Church in Osage and the St. Paul's Lutheran Church in
Austin.
She is survived by four
children, Janice Krick of La Crosse, Wisconsin, Neil (Jean)
Krick of Blaine, Glennys Krick of Hastings and Joy (Michael)
Krajna of Red Wing; 16 grandchildren; 21
great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren;
brother, Elmer (Beatrice) Papenfus of St. Charles,
Minnesota; daughter-in-law, Victoria Krick of Hastings; and
numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death
by both husbands; granddaughter, Natalie Lyons; grandson,
Jarvis Tewes; great-grandson, Matthew Myhre; five sisters;
and six brothers.
