George W. Wright

January 23, 2002

George William Wright, age 91, of Arizona and formerly of the Little Cedar area, died on Tuesday, January 1, 2002.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 5. Memorials can be made to the Hospice of the Valley, Eckstein Center, Scottsdale, Arizona.

He was born on September 19, 1910, in Little Cedar and was raised on a farm near there with his family of three brothers and four sisters.

He put together the first band-radio in the county so he and his brother could listen to Big Band music coming from Chicago on the radio. He and his brothers taught themselves to play musical instruments, put together a band and traveled throughout the Midwest. During World War II, he was a test pilot for Norwest Airlines in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

In 1933 he married Selma Marie Miller, they settled in Charles City and in 1960 they moved to Scottsdale, Arizona, where George was employed by Honeywell General Electric as an electrical engineer.

He had a love for flying, dancing, ham radio and was a gifted musician. George was a member of the Christ the Redeemer Lutheran Church.

Those that survive him include his wife, Selma; one daughter, Donna O’Donnell-Mills; two sisters, Zella Meyer and Verla Young; one brother, Kenneth Wright; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Jennah Heimer

January 9, 2002

Jennah Joann Heimer, infant daughter of Paul and Heidi Heimer of Freeport, Illinois, died at birth on Thursday, January 3, 2002, at the Monroe Clinic Hospital.

Private services will be held for the family and burial will be in the Oakland Cemetery and Mausoleum.

Surviving are her parents; two brothers, Jessten and Jackson; maternal grandparents, Becky and George Kmoop of Freeport and Paul and Carolyn Deininger of Shannon; paternal grandparents are Ted and Barb Heimer of Stacyville; maternal great-grandparents are George and Joan Deininger of Freeport and Juanita Naylor of Tigand, Oregon; and one paternal great-grandmother, Margaret Heimer of Stacyville.

Clarice Huso

January 9, 2002

Clarice “Ki” Huso, died on Thursday, January 3, 2002, at the Riceville Community Rest Home.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 5, 2002, at the St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Riceville. Rev. Michael Parris officiated. Burial was in the Riverside Cemetery, Riceville. The Lindstrom Funeral Home, Riceville, was in charge of the arrangements.

Clarice was born on January 27, 1912 in Carpenter, Iowa, the daughter of Antone and Sina Lund Lomen. She was a graduate of the Northwood High School in 1930. She attended the Mounds/Midway School of Nursing in St. Paul, Minnesota and graduated as an RN in 1933, with post-graduate courses in anesthesiology at the University of Minnesota.

She worked as a nurse/anesthesiologist in the St. Paul, Minnesota and Eau Claire, Wisconsin areas, until her marriage to Bill Huso on December 28, 1944 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Clarice was administrator and head RN at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood from 1962 to 1964. Ki and Bill moved to Riceville in 1964, where they owned and operated A & H Motors.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Bill in 1995; and one brother, Kenneth Lomen; and one sister, Ruth Talle.

Those that survive her include two daughters, Karen Huso of Sylmar, California and Margaret Jordan of McIntire; one son, Richard Huso of Dodge Center, Minnesota; five grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Glenn Markham

January 9, 2002

Glenn W. Markham, age 84, of Osage, died on Thursday, January 3, 2002, at the Faith Home in Osage.

Funeral services were held on Monday, January 7, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Osage. Rev. Philip Recker officiated. Interment was in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery. The Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Glenn was born on March 24, 1917 in Burr Oak Township, Mitchell County, the son of William O. and Adeline (McGrane) Markham. Glenn attended country schools. He was united in marriage to Shirley Duenow on March 31, 1937. They farmed in Burr Oak Township until 1965 when they moved to Osage.

They owned and operated the Plaza Cafe for 17 years until retirement. They have continued to live in Osage. Glenn was a lifetime member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, Lions Club and the Farm Bureau.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Jean Olson; and two sons-in-law, Dean Penney and Tom Blake.

Those that survive him include his wife, Shirley Duenow Markham of Osage; five sons, William and wife, Elaine “Dolly” Markham of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Ronald and wife, Kristine Markham of Parkers Prairie, Minnesota, Richard and wife, Marjorie Markham of Osage, Robert and wife, Kate Markham of Lakeside, California and Keith and wife, Jessica Markham of Gig Harbor, Washington; four daughters, Janice and her husband, John Dempsey of Osage, Barbara Markham of Osage, Joan Blake of St. Ansgar and Patricia and her husband, Roger Karau of Savage, Minnesota; a brother, James Markham and wife, Ruth of The Rock, Georgia; a sister, Katherine and her husband, Frank Laskos of Oregon, Illinois; 24 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

Elnora Bergan

January 9, 2002

Elnora M. Bergan, age 88, of Decorah, died on Friday, January 4, 2002, at the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital, Decorah, following a short illness.

Funeral services were held on Monday, January 7, at the Hauge Lutheran Church, rural Decorah. Rev. John Mayer officiated and burial was in the church cemetery. The Fjelstul Funeral Home, Decorah, was in charge of the arrangements.

Elnora was born on December 30, 1913 in Canoe Township, Winneshiek County, the daughter of John and Kristi (Aga) Jaastad. She was baptized and confirmed at the Hauge Lutheran Church. After completing grade school she attended the Decorah High School and completed Normal Training. She taught rural school in Canoe Township.

On December 7, 1940, she married Lawrence A. Bergan at the Locust Parsonage. To this union were born three sons, Arnold, Richard and Kermit. They lived on a farm in Canoe Township and then moved to Decorah in 1951. Elnora was employed by the Viking Theatre.

Preceding her in death were her parents, John and Kristi Jaastad; her husband, Lawrence on May 12, 1981; one son, Richard on January 18, 1951; on brother, Bennie Jaastad; and four sisters, Clara Jaastad, Luella Jaastad Anderson, Beatrice Jaastad Kormeyer and Selma Jaastad Bergan.

Those that survive her include two sons, Arnold and wife, Mary of Osage and Kermit of Decorah; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, Jeff Bergan and wife, Sharyn of Norwalk, Iowa, Sam and Emily; Jodie Bergan of Des Moines and Jay Bergan of Northwood, New Hampshire.

Lois Decker

January 9, 2002

Lois Maxine Decker, age 86, of Cresco, died on Friday, January 4, 2002, at the Cresco Care Center where she had lived since 1999.

Funeral services were held on Monday, January 7, at the Conway Funeral Home, Cresco. Pastor Rick Kielb officiated. Soloist was Deanne Hanson. Interment was in the Wayne Cemetery, McIntire.

Lois was born in Mitchell County, Iowa, near McIntire, on January 13, 1915, the daughter of Harrey E. and Winnefred (Frost) Duryee. She attended school in McIntire through the tenth grade.

On September 20, 1930, she married John Wesley Decker at the Methodist Parsonage in Cresco. They became parents of three children. She also raised many foster children and was very fond of her grandchildren and helped raise Sharon’s children. They moved into McIntire and Lois owned and operated a grocery store for many years. After she retired from the grocery store, she made a hobby of buying houses and remodeling them for resale.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, John W. in 1971; two children, Joyce Fuller and Donald D. Decker; three brothers, Kenneth, Gerard "Bunny" and Dale Duryee; and one sister, Norma Cable.

Those that survive her include her one daughter, Sharon Patton; six grandchildren, Judy Robbins, Wanda Platte, Audrey Watkins, Dean Patton, Nancy Kottke and Dixie Saldivar; six great-grandchildren, Laura Platte, Lindsey Watkins, Cole Watkins, Sidney Bell, Scott Bell and Joy Paulson; five great-great-grandchildren; and one brother, Wendell Duryee and wife, Katherine of New Hampton.

Roger Poppen

January 9, 2002

Roger D. Poppen, age 62, of Ames, died on Friday, January 4, 2002.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, January 8, at the Bethesda Lutheran Church, Ames. Rev. Dave Nerdig of the Bethesda Lutheran Church and Rev. David Burling, Chaplain of the Mary Greeley Medical Center, officiated. Burial was in the St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery, Manson, Iowa.

Roger was born on July 12, 1939 at rural Palmer, Iowa, to Rudy and Ida (Janssen) Poppen. He graduated from the Manson High School in 1957 and received his B.S. Agriculture Business Degree from Iowa State University in Ames in 1963. He married Phyllis MacDonald on July 8, 1956 in Manson, Iowa. Roger was employed by Hertz Farm Management Real Estate.

Roger was a member and past president of the Bethesda Lutheran Church, Ames, served as chair of the Land Value Study Committee of Iowa Land Study Institute, President of the Iowa Jaycees 1969-1970, Jaycee National Chaplain 1970-71, member of the Ames Noon Rotary, ISU Alumni Assoc. and Order of the Knoll, Outstanding young Alum at ISU in 1975, member of Iowa and American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers, Iowa and National Association of REALTORS, Iowa and National REALTORS Land Institute and Central State Farm Multiple Listing. He served as President of the Iowa Chapter Realtors Land Institute in 1976 and was honored as Farm and Land Broker of the year in 1978. He was a certified instructor for the state and national agriculture real estate course for the Iowa Association of REALTORS and the National REALTORS Land Institute.

Preceding him in death were his parents; two sons, Tom in 1970 and Curt in 1962.

Those that survive him include his wife, Phyllis of Ames; two daughters, Terri (Dean) Haaland of Perry and Kimber (Roger) Jackson of Johnston; two sons, Jim Poppen and fiancée,’ Marie Fisher of West Des Moines and David Knight (Lexie) of Germantown, Maryland; two sisters, Jean (Paul) Carey of Omaha, Nebraska and Deanne (Steve) Byers of Elgin, Illinois; three brothers, Marvin (Carolyn) of Manson, Corliss (Shirley) of Rolfe and Dallas (Sharon) of Burnsville, Minnesota; nine grandchildren, Nick, Kiera and Thomas Haaland, Ashley, Drew and Dakota Jackson, India, Kennedy and Sydney Knight.

Roy L. Hanson

January 9, 2002

Roy Leonard Hanson, age 93, of St. Ansgar, died on Saturday, January 5, 2002, at the North Iowa Mercy Medical Center, Mason City.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, January 9, at 1:30 p.m., at the Deer Creek Lutheran Church, Carpenter. Rev. Kathy Larson officiated and burial was in the First Lutheran Church Cemetery, St. Ansgar.

Roy Leonard Hanson, was born on November 17, 1908 in Worth County, rural Carpenter, Iowa, to Hans Peter and Lena Severson Hanson. He became a child of God on December 26, 1908, at the Deer Creek Lutheran Church, Carpenter, with the Rev. M. E. Waldeland officiating. He was confirmed on March 16, 1923 by Rev. M.E. Waldeland. Roy graduated from the Carpenter High School in 1925 and was the last living member of the class.

He never married and lived his life on the farm where he was born and raised. He began renting his cropland in 1978, but continued to raise Hereford Cattle. Roy also served on the board of directors and then as President of the Worth County Coop Oil from 1954 to 1975.

Preceding him in death were his parents; brothers, Mervin and Alfred; and a sister, Gilma Hendrickson.

Those that survive him include his nieces and nephews and their families, Ivadene Dale of San Jose, California, Horace Hendrickson and wife, Ann of Northwood, Marcella Olson and her husband, Ron of Apple Valley, Minnesota, Ardis Sorenson and husband, Carroll of Thornton, Duane Hanson and wife, Sharon of Thompson, North Dakota, Merle Hanson and wife, Jeanette of Northwood, Sharyl Engelhardt and her husband, Jon of Adel, Ivanell Howard and her husband, Earl of Grandby, Colorado and Audrey McIntosh and her husband, Richard of Jefferson City, Missouri.

Martin Simon

January 9, 2002

Martin “Teenie” Simon, age 86, of Stacyville, died on Saturday, January 5, 2002, at the Stacyville Community Nursing Home.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, January 8, at the Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville. Rev. Joseph Schneider officiated. Interment was in the Visitation Catholic Cemetery, Stacyville. The Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home, Osage, in charge of the arrangements.

Martin “Tennie” Simon, was born on November 11, 1915 at Stacyville, the son of Jacob and Anna (Heaman) Simon. Martin was a lifelong Stacyville resident attending Catholic School and graduating from the Visitation Catholic High School.

He was an avid fisherman and cribbage player. He was a member of the Visitation Catholic Church and the Catholic Order of Foresters.

Preceding him in death were his parents; an infant sister, Angeline; a sister, Marcelline Miller; and a brother, Ralph Simon.

Those that survive him include his two sisters, Elizabeth Taylor of Waterloo and Margaret Anderson and her husband, James of Cedar Falls; a brother, Alfred Simon of Austin, Minnesota; and many nieces and nephews.

Esther V. Abbott

January 9, 2002

Esther V. Abbott, age 96, of St. Ansgar, died on Sunday, January 6, 2002, at the Stacyville Community Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Thursday, January 10, at the First Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar. Rev. Robert Porisch will officiate and burial will be in the Paynesville Cemetery, Paynesville, Minnesota, on Friday, January 11, at 1:00 p.m.

Esther Vivian Hendrickson Abbott, was born on the family farm west of St. Ansgar, on July 20, 1905. She was the daughter of Henry O. and Elizabeth Satre Hendrickson. Esther was baptized and confirmed at the First Lutheran Church by Rev. Waldeland. She attended St. Ansgar Schools and graduated in June 1923. She graduated from the St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minnesota, with a B.A. Degree in June 1927. She continued her education by attending summer sessions at the University of Minnesota and taught several years at Minnesota schools.

On July 20, 1944, she married Mark M. Abbott of International Falls, Minnesota. They lived in International Falls and she was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church there. Following her husband’s death in 1972, she moved to St. Ansgar and made her home with her brother, Otto.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Mark; her parents; and brothers, Otto, Morris and Roy.

Those that survive her include her nieces, Mrs. Sam (Jean) Edgar of St. Louis, Missouri, Mrs. Tom (Mary) Cedarlund of Grantham, New Hampshire; nephews, Don Hendrickson and wife, Leanna of St. Ansgar, David Hendrickson and wife, Mary Jo of Keokuk, Iowa and Bartlett Hendrickson and wife, Frances of Rockville, Maryland; and several great-nieces and nephews.

Hazel “Maxine” Dutton

January 16, 2002

Hazel “Maxine” Dutton, age 84, of Mason City, formerly of Osage, died on Tuesday, January 8, 2002, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Memorial services were held on Friday, January 11, at the United Methodist Church, Osage. Hospice Chaplin Rev. Kathy Graves officiated. Inurnment will be in the Riceville Cemetery at a later date.

Hazel “Maxine” Dutton, was born on April 4, 1917 in Dows, the daughter of Benjamin and Maude (Stuck) Rice. She was united in marriage to George Dutton on July 23, 1936 in Eagle Grove. They moved to a farm north of Riceville in 1953 and farmed for many years. George died on October 16, 1989.

Maxine was a member of the Oakdale Township Women’s Club and the Kitchen Klatter Band. She baked cakes for all occasions, loved music and played the piano, quilted, crocheted and took care of her plants.

Preceding her in death were her parents; one daughter, Carmen Joyce Jones; and an infant grandson.

Those that survive include her three daughters, Jacqueline Gott of Mason City, Sandra Krause and her husband, Howard of Orchard and Karen Lenz and her friend, Bob Johnson of Osage; one son, Richard Lee Dutton and his wife, Betty of Onamia, Minnesota; a granddaughter that Maxine raised, Melanie Muth and her husband, Dave of Dougherty; a sister, Marcine Cooper and her husband, Bluferd of Dows; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and 23 step-grandchildren.

Bernice M. Kelley

January 23, 2002

Bernice M. Kelley, age 86, of Osage, died on Saturday, January 12, 2002, at the Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center, Osage.

A memorial mass was held on Saturday, January 19, 2002, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage. Rev. Philip Recker officiated. Inurnment will be in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Volga, Iowa, at a later date. There was a gathering of friends at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home, Osage, on Friday, January 18.

Bernice was born on December 14, 1915 at Volga, the daughter of John Joseph “JJ” and Grace (Rinkert) Burns. She attended school in Volga and graduated from the Volga High School in 1932. She then attended Iowa State Teachers College. Bernice lived in Minneapolis, Minnesota, for a time and worked there as a secretary.

She was united in marriage to S. Merrill Kelley on January 1, 1947. They made their home in Osage. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage.

Preceding her in death were her parents; and one brother, William Burns.

Those that survive her include her husband, S. Merrill Kelley of Osage; a son, Merrill F. “Skip” Kelley and wife, Dee Dee of San Diego, California; a daughter, Margery Johnsten and husband, Richard of Great Falls, Montana; seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; and four nieces.

Marcellene H. Kisner

January 16, 2002

Marcellene H. Kisner, age 64, of Osage, died on Sunday, January 13, 2002, at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

A memorial mass will be held on Thursday, January 17, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Osage. Father Philip Recker will officiate. Inurnment services will follow in the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Osage. There will be a gathering of friends on Wednesday, from 4-8:00 p.m., at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home, Osage, with a scripture service at 7:00 p.m.

She was born on March 21, 1937 in Osage, the daughter of Fred P. and Bertha (Huemann) Mullenbach. She graduated from the Osage High School. Marcellene married Oliver “Tim” Kisner on October 30, 1958, at the Sacred Heart Church in Osage. She and Tim operated the Town Pump in Mitchell from 1974 to 1984. She continued working there for her son, Tim from 1984 to 1990. After working at the Town Pump she managed the American Legion Post 278 in Osage for six years.

Marcellene was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage and the Sacred Heart Guild. She loved to garden and golf. She also loved to bowl and was inducted into the Bowling Hall of Fame in St. Louis, Missouri.

Preceding her in death were her father, Fred; three brothers, Gervase, Harold and Melvin.

Those that survive her include her mother, Bertha Mullenbach of Osage; her husband, Oliver “Tim” Kisner of Osage; three sons, Timothy J. Kisner and his daughter, Britney of Blaine, Minnesota, Steven P. Kisner and his wife, Kirsi of Coon Rapids, Minnesota and Rodney R. Kisner of Minneapolis, Minnesota; two brothers, Germaine Mullenbach and wife, Helen of Ames and Lavern Mullenbach and wife, Bonnie of Osage; two sisters-in-law, Marie Mullenbach of Tuscon, Arizona and Mildred Mullenbach of Osage; and several nieces and nephews.

E. Alice Ingebritson

January 30, 2002

E. Alice (Storby) Ingebritson, 90 of Osage, formerly of Lake Mills, Iowa, died on Monday, January 14, 2002, at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City, Iowa.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m., on Friday, January 18, at the Lake Mills Synod Lutheran Church in Lake Mills, with Rev. Karl Hermanson officiating. Burial was in the Center Cemetery in rural Lake Mills.

Alice was born on November 18, 1911 in Lake Mills, Iowa, the daughter of Pete and Ida (Peterson) Storby. She was baptized, confirmed and married in the Center Lutheran Church in Lake Mills, where she was organist for many years.

On February 18, 1931, she married Herman M. Ingebritson. They were the parents of six children, Ronald Lloyd, Shirley, Gloria Marlene, Marjorie, Phyllis and Wayne. Later, as her children grew up and were in school she started taking care of other small children in their homes.

While living in Alexandria, Minnesota, she took care of Art and Natalie Johnson’s children. While living in Mankato, Minnesota, she worked as a cook at Bethany College for several years. After moving to Osage, she also took care of children. She was a “second mother” to Dan and Jill in Osage.

Alice had a great sense of humor and her family was extremely important to her. Her positive influence on her children, grandchildren and other people’s children will never be forgotten.

She is survived by her three daughters, Shirley Martinson of Osage, Marjorie and her husband, John Melin and Phyllis and her husband, Bruce Hanak, all of Alexandria, Minnesota; her son, Wayne and his wife, Karen of Elysian, Minnesota; one son-in-law, Richard Wolters of Mankato, Minnesota; 14 grandchildren, Christine Straate, Cathy Woodiwiss, Monica Ring, Meta Weber, Paul Martinson, Nan Frost, Sue Forrey, Curtis Melin, Debbie Hvezda, Jeffrey Hanak, Jason Hanak, Joel Hanak, Cory Sticha and Mandy Ingebritson; by 23 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; one sister, Alma Cleven of Coralville, Iowa; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Julius and Lorriaine Ingebritson of New Ulm, Minnesota; two sisters-in-law, Sarah Storby of Ames and Orpha Storby of Lake Mills; along with numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Alice was preceded in death by her parents, Pete and Ida Storby; five brothers, Otis, Clifford, Benard, Irving and Lester; one son, Ronald Lloyd Ingebritson; one daughter, Gloria Marlene Wolters; one granddaughter, Elizabeth Lynn Wolters; one grandson, Mickey R. Ingebritson; one son-in-law, Alan R. Martinson; and two great-grandsons, Ryan T. Hvezda and Tristan M. Sticha.

Ruth M. Morse

January 23, 2002

Ruth M. Morse, age 83, of Osage, died on Thursday, January 17, 2002, at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center Hospice unit in Osage.

Funeral services were held on Monday, January 21, at the United Church of Christ in Osage. Rev. Robert Melhorn officiated and interment was in the Osage Cemetery. The Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home, Osage, was in charge of the arrangements.

Ruth was born on August 18, 1918 in Tripoli, the daughter of Stanley R. and Sadie (Messinger) Smith. The family moved to Osage in 1919. After attending Grinnell College, Ruth worked for a law firm in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Ruth was united in marriage to Albert L. Morse on May 12, 1950 and they made their home in Osage. Albert preceded her in death on March 4, 1972.

Ruth was a member of the United Church of Christ, PEO, Mitchell County Hospital Auxiliary, was active in Girl Scouts and an active member of the Republican Party. She enjoyed and loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, horses, dogs, and following fire trucks.

Gordon L. Tourtellott

January 30, 2002

Gordon L. Tourtellott, age 62, died on Friday, January 18, 2002, at the St. Alexius Medical Center, Hoffman Estates.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, January 22, at the Ahlgrim and Sons Funeral Home, Streamwood, Illinois.

Gordon was born on August 29, 1939 in Osage. He worked ramp service for 25 years with Eastern Airlines and then went to work for 12 years for School District U-46 in Illinois until his retirement.

Gordon was an avid fisherman and camper.

Those that survive him are his wife, Doris to whom he was married on July 21, 1961; sons, Gordon Jr. (Kitty), Scott (Donna) and Lance (Karen); four grandchildren, Gregory, Kyle Meagan and Ashley; his mother, Joyce Tourtellott; brother, Jerry (Lora Lee) of Osage; three sisters, Beverly Fingelson of Altoona, Cheryl (Erling) Johnson of Arizona and Penny (Max) Beckner of Clear Lake; and his mother-in-law, Bernetice Robeson of Minnesota.

He was preceded in death by his father, Lynn Tourtellott; and father-in-law, Lyle Robeson.

Lucile M. Larson

January 30, 2002

Lucile M. Larson, age 87, of Kearney, Nebraska, died on Sunday, January 20, 2002, at the St. John’s Center in Kearney.

Memorial services were held on Saturday, January 26, at the First Presbyterian Church, Kearney. Rev. Matthew T. Robinson officiated and burial will be at a later date in the Osage Cemetery.

Lucile was born on May 2, 1914 in Anoka, Minnesota, to Joseph and Lucy (Jansen) Larson. She graduated from the Osage High School in 1930. Lucile then moved to Los Angeles, California, in 1933 and started work with the Bell Telephone Co. Lucile moved to Kearney in 1989 to join her sister, Marion Melson shortly after her retirement from the Pacific Telesis Telephone Co. in Los Angeles.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Kearney, where she was active in church circles and coffee clubs and the Kearney Newcomers Club. She was also a member of the Pioneer Telephone Association and served on it’s board for many years. Lucile enjoyed extensive travel abroad.

Preceding her in death were her parents; two sisters, Harriet Larson and Marion Melson.

Those that survive her include her nephews, Karl and Kathie Melson of Aurora, Nebraska and Kirk and Kelly Melson of Kearney, Nebraska; a niece, Christa Otaka of Honolulu, Hawaii.

Charles Scott Reynolds

January 30, 2002

Charles Scott Reynolds, age 40, of Plymouth, died on Sunday, January 20, 2002, at his residence in Plymouth of natural causes.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, January 24, at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home, Osage. Father Ron Friedell officiated. Inurnment will be at a later date. The Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Charles was born on May 20, 1961 in Mason City, the son of Lester Duane and Judith (Chehock) Reynolds. He was raised in Plymouth on their family farm. He graduated from the North Central High School in Manly in 1980. He then attended NIACC and studied everything from mechanics to accounting and then graduated from NIACC. Anyone who knew him would know his love for Corvettes and his Fat Boy Harley.

When he wasn’t cruising on his bike, you would find him on the web talking with all his friends. He will be greatly and forever missed.

Those that preceded him in death were his father, Lester; and all his grandparents.

Those that survive him include his mother, Judith Reynolds of Plymouth; brother, Dave Reynolds and his wife, Tina of Plymouth; one niece, Vanessa; and one nephew, Adam of Plymouth.

C. Dale Johnson

January 30, 2002

C. Dale Johnson, age 77, of Osage, died on Tuesday, January 22, 2002, at the Waverly Municipal Hospital, Waverly, Iowa.

Funeral services were held on Friday, January 25, at the Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Osage. Rev. Dennis Hanson and Rev. Roy Ott officiated. Interment was in the Osage Cemetery. The Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Dale was born on June 20, 1924 near Carpenter, the son of Clarence and Ruth (Parker) Johnson. He attended the Carpenter School until his junior year, then graduated from the Orchard Consolidated School in 1942. He became a member of the Meroa Rock Creek Lutheran Church in 1947.

On March 19, 1950, he was united in marriage to Marjorie Kittleson at the First Lutheran Church in St. Ansgar. They resided in Otranto for five years where Dale farmed, later moving west to Osage where he farmed for 29 years, until 1985 when he retired and moved to Osage.

Dale was a good father and friend that enjoyed watching his family grow up and going to all the sport events of his grandchildren.

Dale will be greatly missed by his family and friends. His wife, Marjorie of 51½ years; six children, Robert D. Johnson and friend, Karen Lenz, Larry E. Johnson and wife, Lynda, LaVonne G. Freund and husband, Galen, James S. Johnson and wife, Jody, Richard A. Johnson and wife, Mary Jo and Donald L. Johnson and wife, Barb, all of Osage; five sisters, Eleanor Schallock of Osage, Margaret Olsen of Osage, Mildred Sponheim of Nora Springs, Carol McLaughlin of Belmond and Sharon Boyce of Roseville, Minnesota; four brothers, Charles Johnson of Osage, Harley Johnson of Osage, Ivan Johnson of Osage and Keith Johnson of Fort Dodge; 15 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren.

Dale was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Florence Borcherding; and one brother, Kenneth Johnson.

Because of Dale’s love of children, we wish for others to benefit from his love. The family asks that memorials be given to the scholarship fund at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church or the Osage High School track fund.

Norbert Mullenbach

January 30, 2002

Norbert F. Mullenbach, age 76, of Osage, died on Wednesday, January 23, 2002, at the St. Mary’s Hospital, Rochester, Minnesota.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 26, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Osage. Father Philip Recker officiated. Burial was in the Visitation Catholic Cemetery, Stacyville. The Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home, Osage, was in charge of the arrangements.

Norbert was born the son of Steve and Katie (Huemann) Mullenbach on November 29, 1925 in rural Stacyville. He attended the Visitation Catholic School in Stacyville. Norbert was united in marriage to Irene Johanns on April 11, 1953 at the St. Peter’s Catholic Church in New Haven. They farmed south of Stacyville until their retirement when they moved to Osage.

Norbert always enjoyed a good card game, cribbage, bowling or just visiting with his family and friends. He truly loved farming, gardening and enjoyed raising and working with his Percheron draft horses. Norbert was very active in the community serving on boards at the Visitation Catholic Church, the Stacyville Co-op Elevator and the ASCS.

He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage, the Catholic Order of Foresters and the Knights of Columbus. Because of Norbert’s love for young people, the family asks that memorials be given to the scholarship fund at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage.

Preceding him in death were his parents; one daughter, Anne Marie; three brothers, Albert, Irvin and Del; and one sister, Virginia.

Those that survive him include his wife, Irene Mullenbach of Osage; three sons, Michael Mullenbach and wife, Linda of St. Ansgar, Mark Mullenbach and wife, Carol of Little Cedar and Steve Mullenbach of Balsam Lake, Wisconsin; two daughters, Mary Ann Mullenbach of Minneapolis, Minnesota and Lisa Roe of Waverly; 11 grandchildren, Jennifer and Marie Mullenbach, Michael Leonard, Erik and Steve Mullenbach, Allen and Tony Mullenbach, Tyler and Brittney Mullenbach and Mitchell and Emma Roe; one brother, Ralph Mullenbach and wife, Zola of Stacyville; two sisters, Helen Brown of Brigton, Colorado and Dorothy McCarthy and her husband, Tom of McIntire; two sisters-in-law, Gladys Mullenbach of Amery, Wisconsin and Bertilla Mullenbach of Rochester, Minnesota.

Jean E. Bauer

January 30, 2002

Mrs. Glen (Jean) Bauer, age 87, a resident of Seven Mile Road, died on Thursday, January 24, 2002, at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home, Charles City.

Funeral services were held on Monday, January 28, at the First Christian Church in Charles City. Rev. Greg Lugn officiated and burial was in the Riverside Cemetery, Charles City.

Jean Elizabeth (Davenport) Bauer, was born on December 28, 1914 at Memphis, Tennessee, the daughter of Edgar and May “Mae” (Schwab) Davenport. She attended schools at Kansas City, Missouri and Indiana graduating from the Central High School at South Bend, Indiana, on June 11, 1931. Jean then enrolled at Iowa State Teacher’s College (UNI) in 1934 completing a one year rural course certificate program in 1935.

She then taught for five years at the Schwab School near Oxford Junction, Iowa. In 1940 she received her standard elementary teachers certificate and came to Floyd County to teach at the Cedar Township School #2 (Ballard). She taught at a one-room schoolhouse called St. Charles #2 on old Highway #14. During World War II she worked at the Oliver Farm Equipment Company as the only female in the lathe department from 1943-1946.

On November 18, 1949, she was united in marriage to Glen Bauer. They farmed on the family farm west of Charles City, now known as the Plum Creek Farm.

She was a member of the First Christian Church and taught Sunday School for many years. She was active in many area clubs.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, in 2000; an infant daughter, Katherine; and two brothers, Aylmer and George Davenport.

Those that survive her include four sons, Lawrence of Charles City, Carl and wife, Donna of Rochester, Minnesota, Lee of Mukilteo, Washington and Bruce and wife, Sue of Ankeny; seven grandchildren; and a sister, Joan Britten of Davenport.

Roger Lee Field

January 30, 2002

Roger Lee Field, age 65, a resident of Charles City, died on Thursday, January 24, 2002, at his home after a short battle with cancer.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 26, at the Hauser Funeral Home, Charles City. Rev. Solomon Odoom, pastor of the Grace United Methodist Church officiated. Burial was in the Oakwood Cemetery, Floyd. A flag presentation was done by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Roger Lee Field, was born on March 15, 1936 in Floyd, the son of Harry “Doc” and Eunice (Stewart) Field. He graduated from the Rudd High School. Following graduation he married Helen Christiansen and to this union four children were born. He farmed and worked at White Farm Equipment for many years. He was a member of the Rock Creek Lutheran Church.

He proudly served his country in the United States Navy Reserve from July 2, 1954 until his honorable discharge on July 1, 1962. In the year of 1978 he married Loretta Gourley. She died in 1987. He married Nancy Wolske Gruben on July 16, 1993 in Charles City.

Preceding him in death were his father in 1984; his wife, Loretta Gourley; and brother-in-law, Ron Shipman.

Those that survive him include his mother, Eunice Field of Charles City; wife, Nancy; four children and their spouses, Dr. Rebecca Tate of North Carolina, Loren and Lenore Field of Hinton, Robin and Steven Fox of Lakeville, Minnesota and Ward and Shannon Field of Pine Island, Minnesota; three step-children of Nancy’s, Lynn Morse, Mark Gruben and Michael Gruben; five step-children of Loretta Gourley’s, Kirk Gourley, Rick Gourley, Mick Gourley, Dave Gourley and Jodi Greve; six grandchildren; many step-grandchildren; two brothers, Eddie Field of Floyd and Kenneth Field and wife, Kathy of Clear Lake; three sisters, Pat Swedberg and husband, Deryl of Lancaster, Missouri, Judy Schilling and husband, Robert of Cedar Falls and Ginger Shipman of Nora Springs; and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Beverly A. Rogers

Beverly Ann Rogers, age 59, of Osage, died on Thursday, January 24, 2002, at her home after battling breast cancer for nine years.

Funeral services were held on Monday, January 28, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage. Father Philip Recker officiated and interment was in the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Osage. The Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home, Osage, was in charge of the arrangements.

Beverly was born in Spencer on September 4, 1942, the daughter of Joseph Lepper and Dorothy (Petz-Lechman). She graduated from the Mason City High School. Beverly was employed by Mercy Hospital for 14 years.

She was united in marriage to Marvin Rogers on May 12, 1962 in Mason City. She enjoyed her grandchildren as well as gardening, flowers and birds. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Ladies Guild.

Preceding her in death were her father, Joseph Lepper and step-father John Lechman.

Those that survive her include her mother, Dorothy Lechman of Mason City; her husband, Marvin Rogers of Osage; five children, Laurinda Darling and her husband, Bob of Ankeny, Curt Rogers of Osage and his special friend, Dee Bahl, Sandra Wohkittel and her husband, James of Lakeville, Minnesota, Kevin Rogers and his wife, Cindy of Osage and Joanne Kuntz and her husband, Dennis of Clear Lake; nine grandchildren, Elissa and Jerad Darling, Brittany, Kaitlin and Jorden Kuntz, James J. and Maxwell Wohkittel, Karla and Lucas Rogers; a sister, Sue Martin and her husband, Gary of Clarion; a brother, Mickey Lepper of Mason City; and many special friends.

Jerry H. Folkers

Febuary 6, 2002

Jerry H. Folkers, age 63, of Osage, died on Monday, January 28, 2002, at his home.

Funeral services were held on Friday, February 1, at the Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Osage. Rev. Dennis Hanson and Rev. Roy Ott officiated. Burial was in the Osage Cemetery, with military rites at the grave by the Osage American Legion Post 278. The Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home, Osage, was in charge of the arrangements.

Jerry was born on October 16, 1938 in Allison, Iowa, the son of Erwin and Lucille (Ellerman) Folkers. He attended school in Allison and graduated from the Allison High School in 1956. He attended Wartburg College in Waverly where he received his bachelor’s degree and then attended law school at the University of Iowa in Iowa City and graduated in 1962.

He was united in marriage to Betty Bruns on September 8, 1962, at the St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Rockwell and to this union, two children were born, Eric on June 17, 1964 and Anna on September 28, 1967. After graduating from the College of Law, Jerry entered the Marine Corps where he attained the rank of Captain and was honorably discharged in 1966.

The couple moved to Osage in 1966, where Jerry started to practice law. He served as the Mitchell County Attorney from 1968 to 1996. He was a member of the law firm, McKinley, Folkers, Walk and Murphy. He was the Treasurer of the Osage American Legion Post 278. For a time he also served as Superintendent at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church where he was a member.

Jerry was an avid fisherman, cribbage player, chess player and gardener.

Preceding him in death was his father, Erwin Folkers.

Those that survive him include his wife, Betty Folkers of Osage; daughter, Anna DeKruif and her husband, James of Cedar Rapids and son, Cameron; son, Eric Folkers and his fiancée’, JoAnn Kreger of West Des Moines and children, Steven, Andrew, Jeremy and Alyssa; his mother, Lucille Folkers of Allison; two sisters, Colette Chase and her husband, Charles of St. Louis, Missouri and Sharon Richards and her husband, Ron of Fairbanks, Alaska.

LaVerne Walters

Febuary 6, 2002

LaVerne Walters, age 76, of Osage, died on Wednesday, January 30, 2002, at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center Hospice Unit, Osage.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, February 2, at the Trinity Lutheran Church, Osage. Rev. Christian F. Gugel officiated. Cremation followed the services with a private family inurnment at a later date. The Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home, Osage, was in charge of the arrangements.

LaVerne was born on February 23, 1925 in Sheffield, the son of Henry L. and Lena (Timmerman) Walters. He was raised in the Sheffield-Swaledale area and attended rural schools. LaVerne was united in marriage to Zaneta Bean on January 7, 1949, at the St. John’s Lutheran Church in Nashua. They farmed near Little Cedar and them moved to Osage in 1969.

LaVerne started the Osage Sales Yard in 1965 selling new and used machinery. In later years he enjoyed collecting and restoring farm toys.

He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Osage, where he was a deacon and church trustee.

Preceding him in death were his parents; one grandson, Ryan Walters; and one son-in-law, Michael Shirley.

Those that survive him include his wife, Zaneta Walters of Osage; three daughters, Shirley Shirley of Charles City, Susanne Bolt and her husband, Garriett “Butch” of Parkersburg and Sandra Heter and her husband, Alan of Farmington, Minnesota; two sons, Richard Walters and wife, Ann of Osage and Robert Walters and his wife, Darla of Spearfish, South Dakota; two sisters, Irene Givens of Waverly and Betty Irish of Mount Sterling, Iowa; two brothers, Roy Walters and wife, Gene of Osage and Ray Walters and wife, Nancy of Mason City; 14 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
