Jeannette Wetter Chinnery

February 10, 2009

Jeannette Wetter Chinnery, age 86, of Orchard, passed away on Wednesday, February 4, 2009, at the Faith Lutheran Home in Osage, following a brief illness.

Memorial services were held at 1:00 p.m., on Saturday, February 7, at the First Congregational Church, U.C.C. in Orchard, with Pastor Jan Tjaden officiating. Inurnment will be in the Riverside Cemetery in Charles City at a later date. There was a time for lunch and fellowship following services at the church.

Jeannette Marie, was born on April 11, 1922 in Orchard, the daughter of Walter and Selma (Johnson) Wetter. She married Clayton Albert Chinnery on October 25, 1941 in Charles City. Clayton joined the U.S. Army in 1942 and they spent some time in California where Clayton was stationed at Camp Roberts. After returning home, they farmed for several years, eventually owning and operating their own feed business, AFS Distributors in Orchard.

Jeannette loved being outdoors, whether it was farming or riding horseback. She loved playing basketball and softball. In later years, she rode her favorite horse at horse shows and won many ribbons and trophies. She rode a horse until she was 50 years old.

Survivors include her children, Linda (Earl) Stoner of Strawberry Point and Elaine (Phillip) Scott of Boscobel, Wisconsin; four grandchildren, Sgt. Kelly (Youngun) Gorman of Manhattan, Kansas, Megan Stoner (special friend, Seth Crosby) of St. Paul, Minnesota, Julie Scott of Austin, Texas and Tricia Scott (special friend, Jacob Gammon) of Madison, Wisconsin; four great-grandsons, Tyree Edge, Kevin Lee, Killian Gorman and Keenan Gorman; and a great-granddaughter, Susan Lee.

She is also survived by two brothers, Marvin (Pat) Wetter of Floyd and Russell Wetter of Rudd; a sister, Rosetta (Keith) Shelledy of Mesa, Arizona; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Selma Wetter; her husband, Clayton Chinnery; and one granddaughter, Jacqueline Scott Edge.

Tom Dudding

February 10, 2009

Tom Dudding, 57, of Nora Springs, Iowa, died suddenly on Friday, February 6, 2009, at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City, Iowa.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Friday, February 13, at the First United Methodist Church, Nora Springs, with Pastor Wendy Johannesen officiating. Inurnment will be in the Park Cemetery, Nora Springs. Visitation with viewing will be on Thursday, from 4-7:00 p.m., at the Sheckler Colonial Chapel, Nora Springs. Following the visitation he will be cremated.

Thomas A. Dudding, was born on November 11, 1951 in Estherville, Iowa, the son of Al and Norma (Olthoff) Dudding. He later moved to a farm outside Buffalo Center, Iowa and attended schools there, graduating in 1970. While in high school he was active in FFA, winning numerous gold awards in ag mechanics, crops, meat judging and public and extemporaneous speaking at the state level and achieving the State Farmer Degree. He held district officer positions and also sang in the FFA Choir. He was second team all conference in football.

After graduating from Iowa State University in 1974 with a degree in Agricultural Education he taught at Glidden-Ralston and St. Ansgar and in 1985 he went to work for Agriliance. Currently he was working for NAU Country Insurance as a crop adjuster, a job he loved.

As a hobby he did woodworking and carpentry. Much of the furniture in the home was constructed by Tom in "the shed" and he also constructed an addition to their home. Many beautiful pieces of furniture were made by him for friends and family.

On September 9, 1972, he married Mary McGoff in Owatonna, Minnesota. They were married 36 years this past September.

Tom is survived by his wife, Mary; his three children: son, Christopher (Maria) and their son, Jack of Brussels, Belgium; son, Allan (Nicole) of Sacramento, California; and daughter, Laura (Eric) Engels of Altoona, Iowa; brothers and sisters, Patricia (Gary) Pond of Watertown, South Dakota, Michael (Kathy) Dudding of Denison, Iowa, Jay Dudding of Bloomington, Minnesota, Steven (Susan) Dudding of Morris, Minnesota, Barbara (Michael) Stephens of Fort Calhoun, Nebraska and Sandra (Steve) Boerboom of Cottonwood, Minnesota; and by many in-laws, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and scores of friends. He will be sadly missed by all.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Jon; sister, Carol; and an infant brother and sister.

Dean P. Blake

February 10, 2009

Dean P. Blake, 57, of Mason City, Iowa, died on Saturday, February 7, 2009, at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 11, at 10:30 a.m., at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Meyer, Iowa, with Rev. John Moser officiating. Interment will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Meyer. Visitation was held on Tuesday, from 4-7:00 p.m., at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, Mason City, with a scriptural wake service at 5:00 p.m. Visitation will also be held one hour before the services on Wednesday, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Meyer.

Dean was born on October 26, 1951 in Osage, Iowa, the son of Othmar and Gladys (Smith) Blake. He graduated from the Osage High School in 1969. Following high school he engaged in farming and has continued to farm. He later started working as a mechanic and worked in various shops until he opened B&J Auto, Mason City in 1978, which he has continued to own and operate.

He enjoyed hunting, going to farm auctions and especially spending time with his family and friends. He was well known for helping others without wanting credit and telling stories and jokes to make people laugh. He would also be known for his ability to be a good listener. He took great pride in restoring his red barn, which he has registered with Iowa Barn Restoration.

He is survived by his mother, Gladys Blake of Stacyville; five children, Jason (Christy) Blake of Grafton, Chad Blake and his girlfriend, Larken Amador of Clear Lake, Aaron (Casie) Sheehan of Shakopee, Minnesota, Amanda (Joe) Siems of Manly and Anna Blake of Nora Springs; eight grandchildren, Kelsey Blake, Blazer Blake, Morgan Heidick, Carissa Blake, Carina Blake, Aidan Sheehan, Jalen Blake and Qyeison Blake-Tate; four brothers John (Mary) Blake of Cottonwood, Minnesota, Dano (Sue) Blake of Stacyville, David (Kathy) Blake of Osage, and Tim (Kathie) Blake of Osage; two sisters, Jean (Dennis) Hemann of Osage and Janet (Jeff) Chapman of Marshall, Minnesota; and sister-in-law, Joan Blake of St. Ansgar.

He was preceded in death by his father, Othmar Blake; his sister, Ruth Ann Blake; and one brother, Tom Blake.

Al Sprung

February 17, 2009

Al Sprung, age 52, of Osage, died on Saturday, February 7, 2009, at his home in Osage.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m., on Thursday, February 12, at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage, with Pastor Gary Gilbert officiating. Burial was in the Little Cedar Cemetery. Visitation was from 4-7:00 p.m., on Wednesday, at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage.

Al was born on January 5, 1957 in Osage, the son of Russell and Della (Johnson) Sprung. Al attended school in Riceville, graduating from the Riceville High School in 1975. He then went on to Waldorf College in Forest City. Al was known to his friends as "Elvis". He worked many factory jobs, including Wood Harbor in Northwood, Osage Manufacturing, Winnebago Industries in Charles City and most recently at Topps and Wallaces in Osage.

Al enjoyed his pets, riding his Harleys and had a passion for gardening, from which he shared his produce with friends and family. At Christmas time Al enjoyed being Santa Claus for many different children. He also enjoyed eating out and visiting with friends.

Alan is survived by his mother, Della Sprung of Osage; sisters, Cheryl (Gary) Pearson of Osage and Dr. Marilyn (Robert) Waldschmidt of Waterville, Minnesota; five nieces and nephews, Shannon Walters, Russell Waldschmidt, Nathan Waldschmidt, Rachel Waldschmidt and Ingbritt (Pearson) Neeley; grand-niece and nephews, Ashley, John Robert and Chris.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Janet Ann Penney

February 17, 2009

Janet Ann Penney peacefully passed away on Thursday, February 12, 2009, at the age of 71, after a gallant fight with illness.

A memorial service was held at 11:00 a.m., on Monday, at the Mt Olivet Lutheran Church, Minneapolis, Minnesota, with reviewal one hour before the service. Interment was on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m., in the Osage Cemetery. Memorials preferred to the American Diabetes Association.

Janet was a proud homemaker who enjoyed life and wanted everything perfect for her family. Her strong heritage and work ethics will be remembered by those she touched.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Melburn & Frances Smalley; and in-laws, Earl & Evabel Penney.

Survivors include her loving husband of 51 years, Stephen Gregg Penny; children, Debora (Steven) Miller and Stephen J. Penney; sisters, Karen (Ivo) Fox and Joyce (Neal) DuShane; nieces/nephews, John, Mike, Chuck, & Dianna; great nieces/nephews; and some very special neighbors and many friends.

Roger W. Gratias

February 17, 2009

Roger William Gratias, age 53, of Fort Collins, Colorado and formerly of Osage, passed away on Thursday, February 12, 2009, after a long struggle with frontotemporal dementia.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, February 21, at the Eden Presbyterian Church, Rudd, with Rev. John Bates officiating. Inurnment will be in the Eden Presbyterian Cemetery. There will be a time for lunch and fellowship following the services at the church.

Roger was born on December 19, 1955 in Osage, the son of Paul and LaVera (Nash) Gratias. He grew up on a farm near Nora Springs. He graduated from the Nora Springs-Rock Falls High School and earned a degree in Business at Minnesota State University in Mankato, Minnesota. After graduating, he worked at Thorp Credit in Iowa for a couple of years and then moved to Cheyenne, Wyoming, where he worked as a bank loan officer. Roger lived in Cheyenne for 15 years and worked a variety of jobs following his work in banking.

In 1995, he moved to Osage to help care for his father and worked at A to Z Drying for 10 years. Following Roger's dementia diagnosis in 2006, he lived at the Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center where his father, Paul Gratias, was also a resident. After Paul died in 2007, Roger moved to a dementia care facility in Fort Collins, Colorado to be near his brother, Raymond.

During the next few years, he enjoyed going to his nephew's baseball games, attending church with the family and taking rides in the mountains. Roger spent the final two months of his life in the Rehabilitation and Nursing Center of the Rockies. Everywhere Roger went, he soon made friends and was a favorite resident at the care facilities where he lived. Roger was always proud to be an Iowan and enjoyed cheering for Iowa teams. Church and family were the two most important things in his life. During his years in Iowa, he worshipped at the Eden Presbyterian Church and enjoyed singing in the church choir. His niece and nephews were especially important to him and he was always glad to see them.

Roger is survived by his brother, Raymond (Cheryl) Gratias of Fort Collins, Colorado; two nephews, Benjamin Gratias of Fort Collins and Justin Mohring of Iowa City; and 1 niece, Jolene Mohring of Center Point.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his sister, Mavis Mohring Rosauer.

Elaine Cue

February 17, 2009

Elaine Cue, 84, of Webster City, died on Saturday, February 14, 2009, at the Crestview Senior Living in Webster City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Friday, February 20, at the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, with Rev. Dr. Mike Kroona officiating. Burial will follow in the Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the Trinity Lutheran Church from 5-8:00 p.m., on Thursday evening and after 9:00 a.m. on Friday.

Elaine Evenson, daughter of Even and Olga Evenson was born on November 3, 1924 in Austin, Minnesota. She received her education from the Austin Community Schools, graduating in 1942. On December 5, 1947, she married Keith L. Cue at the St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin. During Mr. Cue's career with the Illinois Central Gulf Railroad, the family moved to Cherokee, Waterloo, Champaign, Chicago, Charles City, Dubuque and back to Waterloo. In addition to other positions, Elaine worked for the Waterloo Community School District in the media Department for over eight years until her retirement in 1980. For several years Elaine and Keith lived in retirement in Osage. In 1986, the couple moved to Webster City. Keith died on December 25, 1998. Elaine had been residing at Crestview Senior Living since April 2004.

Elaine was a member of the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Webster City. She loved to volunteer in many church activities, especially quilt making.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and Curtis Preston of Greenfield, Wisconsin; sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald and Lynda Cue of Ashland, Oregon and Robert and Beverly Cue of Altoona; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sister, Dorothy Stephenson of Dexter, Minnesota; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, Keith; she was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Pearly, Arnold, Melvin and Donald Evenson; sister, Evelyn McCawley; and twin sister, Lorraine McCaffrey.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be given to Trinity Lutheran Church, the Trinity Kitchen Fund or the Trinity Quilt fund.

Phyllis Melcher

February 17, 2009

Phyllis Melcher, 86, of Charles City, died on Sunday, February 15, 2009, at Cedar Health in Charles City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Thursday, at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Pastor Robert Holdorf, of the West Saint Charles United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in the West Saint Charles Cemetery, rural Charles City. Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 4-8:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Visitation will continue on Thursday one hour prior to the service.

Phyllis Elieen Anderson Dunkin Melcher, was born on December 5, 1922 at Rush City, Minnesota, the daughter of Harry and Aleda (Lund) Anderson. The family moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota while she was an infant. She grew up in Minneapolis where she graduated from the South High School. Phyllis attended and was confirmed at the Elim Covenant Church. Following high school graduation she worked in Saint Paul for the Montgomery Ward Company in their billing department. On May 10, 1942, she was united in marriage to Harold W. Dunkin. Harold was killed on December 19, 1944 during World War II and is buried in Saint Avold, France. Their daughter, Judy was born to this union. It was on August 14, 1947, that Phyllis was married to Oscar Melcher at her parent's home in Minneapolis. To this marriage two sons, Lloyd and Gayle and a daughter, Darcy were born. Oscar and Phyllis began their married life on the Melcher family farm, which has been a family farm since the land was purchased in 1868.

Phyllis enjoyed being a farm wife. She was also an experienced seamstress, sewing clothes for her family and making wedding gowns for both of her daughters. After her daughter, Darcy started junior high school, Phyllis went to work in the kitchen of the Floyd County Memorial Hospital. There she was responsible for the making of salads for the patients and the hospital cafeteria. Phyllis was a member of the West Saint Charles United Methodist Church where she taught both Sunday and Bible School. She was also an active member in the WSCS and the United Methodist Women.

Her interests included collecting thimbles and dolls. She enjoyed her many friends, attending the Happy Hour Club, Saint Charles Homemakers, 500 Club, Thursday Coffee Group, Sew and Sews and the South High Alumni. The past two years Phyllis resided at the Faith Lutheran Home in Osage and Cedar Health in Charles City. At both facilities Phyllis received loving attention and care. Phyllis will be remembered as a mother devoted to her children and grandchildren.

Living family members include four children, Judith (Robert) "Corky" Coyne of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Lloyd Melcher of Floyd, Gayle (Joy) Melcher of Osage and Darcy (Tracy) Mullenbach of Osage; seven grandchildren, Kristian (Jaenette) Coyne, Nathan (Kelly), Emily and Jordan Melcher, and Becca, Hanna and Kyle Mullenbach; two sisters, Doris Sharp of Charles City and Joyce Droel of Northfield, Minnesota; and a brother, Leslie (Lorraine) Anderson of Minneapolis, Minnesota.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Harold Dunkin and Oscar Melcher who died on November 8, 1991; and two brothers, Wendell and Willard Anderson

Evelyn C. Gabby

February 20, 2009

Evelyn Catherine Gabby, age 84, of Osage, died on Wednesday, February 18, 2009, at her daughter's home in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, of complications from lung cancer.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, February 21, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage, with Rev. John Moser officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-6:00 p.m., on Friday, at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage, with a rosary at 5:45 p.m.

Evelyn was born on August 27, 1924 in Ionia, Iowa, the daughter of Jack and Violet Klassen. In 1954, Evelyn was united in marriage to R. Dale Gabby in Osage. She was a homemaker while raising her children. Later, Evelyn worked for Fox River Mills. All who knew Evelyn's love for family, friends and dance can be comforted with those memories. Evelyn was dearly loved by her family and friends, and will be remembered in their hearts forever.

Evelyn is survived by her six children, Kathy (Tom) McWhite of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, Kevin Gabby and Leanne of Andover, Minnesota, Kenneth (Julie) Gabby of Byron, Minnesota, Renee Gabby and Dave of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, Nancy (Dominic) Alfonso of Eagan, Minnesota and Jeffrey (Pam) Gabby of Urbandale, Iowa; twelve grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and her dog, Beamer.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dale; her sister, Mary Lou Fredericks; and her dog, Billy.

Colleen Dene Kloberdanz

February 20, 2009

Colleen Dene Kloberdanz, age 81, formerly of Osage, passed away on Friday, February 20, 2009, at the Primghar Care Center in Primghar, Iowa.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Tuesday, February 24, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage, with Rev. John Moser officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery. There will be a visitation and celebration of Colleen's life from 9:00 to 9:45 a.m., on Tuesday, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church Basement in Osage.

Colleen was born on January 29, 1928, in Osage, Iowa, to Kenneth and Edna (Gulliver) Blandin. She graduated from the Osage High School in 1946. On November 9, 1946, Colleen married Joe Kloberdanz in Osage. She was employed as a secretary at the Osage Community Schools for over 30 years.

Colleen is survived by her daughter, Nancy Morton and her husband, Robert of Odenton, Maryland; son, Brian Kloberdanz and his wife, Susan and their children, Abby, Claire and Drew, of St. Charles, Illinois; daughter, Joan Hoaglund and her husband, Dave and their daughters, Katie and Laura, of Mapleton, Iowa; and daughter, Dianne Klinker and her husband, Bill and their children, Thor, Knute and Gunnar, all of Primghar, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Joe on May 21, 1995; and her son, Kevin on September 4, 1995.
