Doug Roll, Jr.

August 3, 2009

Doug Roll, Jr., age 87, of St. Ansgar, died on Sunday, August 2, 2009, at the St. Ansgar Good Samaritan Society in St. Ansgar.

Private graveside inurnment services will be held in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Mitchell, with Rev. Peter Chang officiating. Military rites will be provided by the Walter T. Enneberg American Legion Post 358 of St. Ansgar.

Doug was born on March 2, 1922 in Eldora, the son of Douglas and Hilda (Day) Roll, Sr. Doug graduated from the St. Ansgar High School in 1939. He joined the Army Air Corp in 1941 and served during WW II. Doug was united in marriage to Edna Adams on December 10, 1969 in Norfolk, Nebraska. They made their home in St. Ansgar, where they owned and operated a ceramic shop.

Doug enjoyed painting, fishing, camping and woodworking. He was an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs and Washington Redskins.

Doug is survived by his wife, Edna Roll of St. Ansgar; 3 daughters, Judy (Dennis) Beyer of Fredericksburg, Kathy (Steven) Weipert of New Hampton and Dorothy (Irvin) Nystel of New Hampton; 2 sons, Dennis Tabor of Floyd and Jody (Linda) Roll of Mason City; a sister, Dorothy Kuenkel of Tempe, Arizona; a brother, Keith (Alice) Roll of Norfolk, Nebraska; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

James "Jim" Klobassa

August 7, 2009

James "Jim" Klobassa, age 59, of Elma, Iowa, died on Sunday, August 2, 2009, at the Colonial Manor in Elma.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 am., on Wednesday, August 5, at the St. Bernard's Catholic Church, in Alta Vista, Iowa with Father Ray Atwood as celebrant. Burial will be in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery at Alta Vista with Al Baxter, Cletus Bullerman, Kurt Elliot, Arnie Krukow, Josh Douglas and Mike Klobassa serving as casket bearers. Honorary casket bearers will be Don Klobassa, Larry Klobassa, Jeff Hanson, Gary Torney, Joe Meirick, Mickey Baltes, Terry Baltes and John Sculley. Escort and Honor Guard will be provided by the Mitchell County Sheriff's Department and area Police and Troopers.

Visitation was held on Tuesday, August 4, at the Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in Elma, with a Scriptural Wake Service at 5:00 p.m.

James Francis Klobassa, was born on April 10, 1950, to Francis and Arlene (Vokaty) Klobassa in New Hampton, Iowa. Jim attended school at St. Williams in Alta Vista and graduated from the Crestwood High School in Cresco in 1968. Jim was a police officer in Elma and Riceville. In 1977, he joined the Mitchell County Sheriff's Department retiring in 2006. Jim was also active in farming most of his life. He especially enjoyed managing his cow-calf herd.

Jim enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time at the Mississippi River at Lansing. His true loves were his daughters. He was a member of the St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Alta Vista.

Jim is survived by mother, Arlene Klobassa of Elma; two daughters, Kristi and Kayci Klobassa of Elma; one sister, Charlene (Larry) Meirick of Alta Vista; one brother, Gary (Marilyn) Klobassa of Alta Vista; and by his nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Francis on July 24, 2005; and a brother, Joseph in infancy.

Bernese Henderson

August 3, 2009

Bernese Henderson, age 83, of Osage, died on Monday, August 3, 2009, at the Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Osage.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Friday, August 7, 2009, at the Osage Alliance Church in Osage, with Dr. Stephen Grunlan and Rev. Monte Follis officiating. Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1-2:00 p.m., on Friday, at the Osage Alliance Church.

Daniel David Gerdman

August 7, 2009

Daniel David Gerdman, age 22, of Waterloo, died on Tuesday, August 4, 2009, of a work related accident.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, August 8, at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage, with Rev. Dennis Hanson officiating. Burial will be in the St. Peter's Cemetery in New Haven. Visitation is from 5-7:00 p.m., on Friday, at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage and one hour before the services on Saturday.

Dan was born on February 11, 1987 in West Allis, Wisconsin, the son of David Gerdman and Margaret Jo (Johanns) Gerdman. He graduated from the West Allis Central High School. Dan worked as an electrician.

Growing up, he enjoyed playing baseball, soccer and fishing.

Dan is survived by his father, David (Julie) Gerdman of Oconomowoc, Wisconsin; his brother, Doug (Erin) Gerdman of Osage; maternal grandmother, Shirley Johanns of Osage; paternal grandparents, Donald (Rozanna) Gerdman of Baileys Harbour, Wisconsin; two step-sisters, Jessica Mercado of Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Antonia (Dustin) Mercado of Muskego, Wisconsin; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Margaret Jo (Johanns) Gerdman in 2005; maternal grandfather, Raymond Johanns; and paternal grandmother, Virginia Gerdman.

Alvera Jeanette Hanson

August 7, 2009

Alvera Jeanette Hanson, 88, of Nora Springs, died on Tuesday, August 4, 2009, at the Nora Springs Care Center.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., on Friday, August 7, at the Rock Creek Lutheran Church, Osage, with Pastor Dennis Hanson officiating. Burial will be in the Rock Creek Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation was held from 5-7:00 p.m., on Thursday, August 6, at the Sheckler Colonial Chapel, Nora Springs. Memorials may be directed to the Hospice of North Iowa in memory of Alvera.

Alvera was born on April 16, 1921 in Plymouth, Iowa, the daughter of Joe and Clara (Brown) Gasteiger. She graduated from the Plymouth High School in 1939, then married Glen Hanson on October 15, 1940, at the Mason City Methodist Parsonage. To this union seven children were born. For the majority of her life, Alvera was a housewife, taking care of her children and home. She was also a cook at the Rockford Country Club for fifteen years.

In her spare time Alvera enjoyed dancing, bowling, playing cards and sewing. She also liked to collect cardinal memorabilia. Most of all Alvera loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. Alvera had been a member of the Rock Creek Lutheran Church since 1940.

Alvera is survived by her children, Shirley (Jack) Arnett of Golden Shores, Arizona, Sharon (Dennis) Field of Nora Springs, Joel (Peggy) Hanson of Osage, Jerald Hanson and Bridget Neilon of Northwood, Kris (Del) Rieman of Newell, Kurt (Linda) Hanson of Nora Springs and Shelley Hanson of Mason City; 18 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; her sister, Alberta Dicken of Pace, Florida; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her step-mother, Marie; her husband; her grandson, Troy Alan Esser; her step-grandson, Chris Field; her brother and sister-in-law, Harold (Una) Gasteiger; and her brother-in-law, Jack Dicken.

James J. "Jim" Gebel

August 7, 2009

James J. "Jim" Gebel, 75, of Charles City, died on Thursday, August 6, 2009, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City under the care of Iowa Hospice.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Monday, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Reverend Carl Ries and Monsignor Stanley Hayek will concelebrate the Mass. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery at Charles City. There will be a flag presentation by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City, from 3-7:00 p.m., on Sunday, where the Rosary will be recited at 4:00 p.m. and the Vigil Scriptural Wake Service will be held a 6:00 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church an hour prior to the Mass.

James Joseph Gebel, was born on August 21, 1933 at Alta Vista, the son of Louis and Marie (Kolbet) Gebel. He graduated in 1951 from the Saint William High School in Alta Vista and attended Iowa State University. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from the Euchre School. Jim proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. On April 18, 1964, he was united in marriage to Colleen Welch at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. During his career Jim worked for the Howard County Creamery, Hudson Dairy, White Farm Equipment Company and retired from Sara Lee.

He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church where he attended daily Mass regularly and the Knights of Columbus. He also belonged to the Elks Lodge, Catholic Order of Foresters, American Legion, Cedar Ridge Golf Course and the Stateline Cyclone Club. His interests included golfing, fishing, boating at Lansing, going on bus trips, wintering in Florida and doing yard work - paying special attention to his roses. Jim always looked forward to those times he could share his life with all of his family but the grandchildren had a special place in his heart.

Living family members include his wife, Colleen Gebel of Charles City; three children, Suzanne Gebel of Urbandale, Patrick (Shira) Gebel of Charles City and Beth (Scott) Hoppel of Osage; five grandchildren, Brandt, Elliott and Sadie Gebel and Nicholas and Katie Hoppel; three brothers, Tom (Marian) Gebel of New Hampton, Don (Marcy) Gebel of Mason City and Dan (Dorothy) Gebel of Clear Lake; a sister, Barb (Jerry) O'Donnell of Cresco; and 15 nieces and nephews and their children.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a son, Joseph Gebel.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Immaculate Conception School Development Fund, Charles City, Iowa. The Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City, was in charge of the arrangements.

Ruby A. Nolte

August 10, 2009

Ruby A. Nolte, age 92, of Osage and formerly of Clear Lake, died on Saturday, August 8, 2009, at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center, Hospice Unit, in Osage of pneumonia.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m., on Tuesday, August 11, at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage, with Rev. Dennis Hanson officiating. Burial was in the Clear Lake Cemetery in Clear Lake.

On March 9, 1917, Ruby Nolte was born in Clear Lake of Danish immigrants, Neils and Laura (Sorensen) Kristiansen. She was christened Ruby Alexandra Kristiansen in the Clear Lake Lutheran church. Ruby spoke Danish before she began country school in Wayne Township near McIntire. In 1934, she graduated from the Riceville High School with a certificate in normal training, after which she taught for a year in a country school west of McIntire before marrying Kenneth Sprung. They lived on a farm northeast of LeRoy, Minnesota, where 3 of their 4 children were born. Then they moved to a farm south of Riceville in Jamestown Township. Afterwards they lived in Marshalltown and then in McIntire where they bought the general store. Ruby was the storekeeper for about 14 years. They moved to Charles City. In 1969, Ruby graduated from NIACC as a LPN. She worked several years at the Faith Lutheran Home in Osage.

Ruby married Ben Nolte and they lived in Clear Lake until his death in 2001. They were winter Texans in the 80's and early 90's. They loved to dance and travel.

Ruby is survived by her daughter, Janice (Don) Gratz of Northridge, California and their 2 daughters and 5 grandsons; daughter, Joyce (Joel) Sprung Chirino of Mexico City, Mexico and their 4 children and 9 grandchildren; son, Jerry Sprung of Detroit, Michigan and his son and 5 grandchildren who live in Cambodia; sister, Virginia (Earl) Grace of Riceville and their children, Laura, Mary and Doug; and Laura's daughter, Mary Beth Armstrong; nephew, Ernie (Karen) Schofield of McIntire and their daughter, Kristian; and her childhood friend, Theo Lambert.

She was preceded in death by her son, Kenny Sprung; 2 sisters, Connie Schofield and Mable Hackbart; and husband, Ben Nolte.

Grace Edna Stiles

August 19, 2009

Grace Edna Stiles, 81, of Charles City, died on Monday, August 17, 2009, at the Cedar Health in Charles City.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Saturday, August 22, at the Rudd United Methodist Church, Rudd, with Reverend Wendy Johannesen officiating. A private family burial will be in the Sunnyside Memory Gardens, Charles City. Visitation will be held from 5-7:00 p.m., on Friday, August 21, at the Sheckler Colonial Chapel, Nora Springs. Memorials may be directed to the Rudd United Methodist Church or Hospice of North Iowa.

Grace was born on March 26, 1928 in Charles City, the daughter of Willard and Golda (Wilson) Hennick. She graduated from the Floyd High School. On December 13, 1945, Grace married Kenneth Stiles in Austin, Minnesota and to this union 5 children were born. Grace worked side-by-side with her husband on the farm and in their business for many years. She and her husband, Red were co-owners of the Rudd Lumber and Hardware, where she worked as a bookkeeper. She also had her own business utilizing her talent in wallpapering and painting, but she felt her greatest responsibility was that of homemaker. Grace was an active member of the Rudd United Methodist Church.

Grace loved to cook and enjoyed sharing her baked goods with others, she was an avid card player who could play all-night long, a voracious reader, a sports enthusiast, especially when the Iowa Hawkeyes were playing, and a talented quilter. Grace was a star basketball player and transferred her affection for the game from a player to a fan. She loved watching her kids and grandkids participate in activities and would never miss an event. Grace's grandkids always loved how fun and witty she was even in her final days, but above all she will forever be remembered for her generosity and kindheartedness.

She is survived by her children, William (Michelle) Stiles of Trabuco, California, Randall (Kay) Stiles of Rockwell, Sue Ann (Steven) Lockwood of Greenville, South Carolina and Michael (Jackie) Stiles of Rudd; 8 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; her brothers, Elden Hennick of Charles City, Bud (Marie) Hennick of Charles City and Ronald (Sandy) Hennick of Floyd; her sisters, Vera Cerwinskie of Nashua and Shirley Erbe of Maxwell; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Grace was preceded in death by her parents; husband; her son, Kenneth; and her sister, Wonda Scott.

George Allen Christiansen

August 19, 2009

George Allen Christiansen, 68, of Nora Springs, died on Tuesday, August 18, 2009, at the Nora Springs Care Center.

A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m., on Friday, August 21, at the Nora Springs Care Center, Nora Springs, with a time of sharing following the service. Pastor Ed Bard will officiate at the service. A private family inurnment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Hospice of North Iowa in memory of George.

George was born on April 15, 1941 in Osage, Iowa, the son of Carl and Myrtle (Hanson) Christiansen. He was baptized and confirmed at the Rock Creek Lutheran Church, rural Osage. He attended the Rudd Grade School and graduated from the Osage High School in 1959. He graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in Chemical Engineering and worked for the DuPont Chemical Company in Clinton, Iowa, for several years. He was married to and later divorced Carol Sours of Nora Springs. He went on several mission trips for the Church Universal and Triumphant and then returned to help his parents on the farm, also working for some of the neighbors. He was always a caring neighbor and friend.

Taking after his father and uncles, George was an excellent bowler and horseshoe player. He took over management of horseshoe tournaments at the Mitchell County Fair and Nora Springs Buffalo Days after his father passed away. He loved band music and played the trombone in high school. He enjoyed attending the Mason City Municipal Band Concerts on Sunday evenings in East Park. Some of his favorite TV programs were historical documentaries on Iowa Public TV.

George is survived by his sisters, Nancy (Dale) Folkerts of Rudd, Dorothy (Francis) Schmidt of Osage and Helen Randolph of Dallas, Texas; sister-in-law, Barbara (Paul) Christiansen of Cedar Rapids; uncles and aunts, Arnold Hanson of Cedar Rapids, Olaf and Dot Hanson of San Jose, California, Frances (Larry) Christiansen of St. Ansgar and AnnaBelle (Glen) Christiansen of Nora Springs; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Paul; and several aunts and uncles.

Gene W. Gerlach

August 18, 2009

A memorial funeral service for Gene W. Gerlach, a native and long-time resident of St. Ansgar, will be held on Tuesday, August 25, at the United Methodist Church in St. Ansgar. Gene died on Tuesday, July 7, 2009.

The memorial will begin a 11:00 a.m., with the Rev. Roy Nilsen of Des Moines and Pastor Peter Chang of St. Ansgar officiating. Family and friends are invited to gather for the service of celebration and resurrection. A luncheon in the Methodist Parish Hall follows the service.

Don Theis

August 24, 2009

Don Theis, age 73, of New Haven, died of cancer on Monday, August 24, 2009, at his home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Friday, August 28, at the St. Peter's Catholic Church in New Haven, with Rev. Ray E. Atwood officiating. Burial will be in the St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery in New Haven. Visitation will be from 5-8:00 p.m., on Thursday, at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage, with a Rosary at 5:30 p.m.

Don was born on September 30, 1935, on the family farm near New Haven, the son of Francis and Regina (Younker) Theis. He graduated from the St. Mary's High School in New Haven in 1953. Don served in the Iowa National Guard. On February 10, 1962, he married Patricia Johanns at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage. Don farmed his entire life. He enjoyed traveling and golfing.

Don is survived by his wife, Pat of Osage; a daughter, Jayne (Tim) Ness and their children, Emily, John and Madeline of Birmingham, Alabama; a daughter, Laura (Dennis) Laudon and their children, Sarah, Alex, Thomas, Joseph, Mary and William of Rochester, Minnesota; a daughter, Linda (Richard) Thrasher and their children, Jenna and Ryan of Wayzata, Minnesota; a son, Karl (Misty) Theis and their children, Matthew and Kara of Osage; a son, Mark (Sarah) Theis and their children, Jack and Alexis of Luxembourg City, Luxembourg; three sisters, Dolores Steffen of Riceville, Catherine Marr of Fort Worth, Texas and Pauline Ovel of New Hampton; and one brother, Dean (Bonnie) Theis of Osage.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and an infant son, Joseph Donald.
