Maurice T. Muller

Maurice T. Muller, of
Eatonville, Washington, died on
Friday, January 26, 2001.
A memorial
service was held on Tuesday,
January 30, at the St. Paul
Lutheran Church in Graham,
Washington.
Maurice was born
on October 9, 1919, to Herbert
and Marie Troge Muller in Osage,
Iowa. He attended school at
Osage and graduated from the
Orchard High School, Orchard,
Iowa and Business College in
Mason City. He farmed with his
uncle Herman Dietrich. In 1950
he married Margaret Joyce
Dockstader of Rudd. They moved
to Orange, California, where he
owned and operated service
stations until he retired in
1981. Later they moved to
Eatonville, Washington.
He is survived by
his wife, Margaret Joyce; sons,
Lawrence of Portland, Oregon,
James of Irvine, California and
John of Santa Barbara,
California; daughter, Janet
Muller of San Mateo, California;
sister, Mary Ann Green of
Phoenix, Arizona; four
grandchildren; and one
great-granddaughter.

Esther Gilbert
March 27, 2001
Esther Marie
Gilbert, age 65, of Wildwood,
Illinois, died on Thursday,
March 8, 2001, at the Candell
Medical Center in Libertyville,
Illinois.
Funeral services were held on
Monday, March 12, at the Strang
Funeral Chapel and Crematorium
in Grayslake, Illinois, with
Pastor Wayne Jahn of the
Redeemer Lutheran Church of
Waukegan officiating. Interment
was in the Highland Memorial
Park Cemetery in Libertyville,
Illinois.
Esther was born
on October 12, 1935 in
Riceville, Iowa, the daughter of
Harry and Mable (Dilley) Ring.
She was a resident of Wildwood
since 1964 and was formerly of
Iowa. Esther was employed at
Danaher Controls in Gurnee,
Illinois, for over 36 years.
Preceding her in
death were her parents; her
husband, Richard Gilbert; a
brother, Earl Ring; and
step-mother, Vivian “Peanuts”
Ring.
Those that
survive her include her
daughter, Cynthia Marie and
husband, Gary Carlson of
Wildwood, Illinois and their
three children, Nicole Marie,
Bret Ryan and Kyle Richard
Carlson; her brother, Wilford
and Ilene Ring of McIntire; a
sister-in-law, Belvia Lovik of
Osage; and several nieces and
nephews.

Everett R. Hughes
March 27, 2001
Everett Raymond
Hughes, of Riceville, died on
Sunday, March 18, 2001, at
Austin, Minnesota, after
suffering a heart attack.
Funeral services were held on
Wednesday, March 21, at the
Immaculate Conception Catholic
Church in Riceville. Rev. Ray E.
Atwood officiated. Burial was in
the Calvary Cemetery, Riceville.
The Conway Funeral Home was in
charge of the arrangements.
Everett was born
on June 28, 1938, the son of
Norbert and Theresa (Wettstein)
Hughes. He was baptized and
confirmed at the St. Mel’s
Catholic Church in McIntire and
graduated from the McIntire High
School.
In 1959, he was
united in marriage to JoAnn
Francis at the St. Patrick’s
Catholic Church in LeRoy,
Minnesota and they set up
farming in the McIntire area.
Everett started raising purebred
hogs and became a breeder of
Poland China hogs. After many
ups and downs in the hogs
market, Everett went into
trucking which is was what he
did up to the present time.
He was a former
member of the Poland China
Association, former member of
the St. Mel’s Catholic Church
and present member of the
Immaculate Conception Catholic
Church.
Preceding him in
death were his parents.
Those that
survive him include his children
and their spouses, Lori and Tom
Hall of Hayfield, Minnesota,
Debbie Hughes and Scott Losee of
McIntire and Dan and Lydia
Hughes of Fremont; eight
grandchildren; one
great-grandchild; and one
sister, Elaine and Larry
Freerksen of LeRoy, Minnesota.

Theodore A. Bascombe
March 27, 2001
Theodore A.
Bascombe, age 82, of Troy, Ohio,
died on Monday, March 19, 2001,
at the Ohio State University
Hospital, Columbia, Ohio.
Funeral services were held on
Friday, March 23, at the
Fisher-Cheney Funeral Home,
Troy, Ohio. Rev. Gilbert and
Phyllis Welbaum officiated and
military services were held at
the graveside by the Base Honor
Guard from WPAFB and the
Veterans Memorial Honor Guard of
Troy.
Theodore A.
Bascombe, was born on March 21,
1918 in Osage, Iowa, to Zaidee
(Hocumb) and Fred Bascombe. He
was a 1936 graduate of the Osage
High School and a graduate of
Aeronautical Engineering and
Architecture from Ohio State
University, Columbus in 1949. He
received his Masters Degree from
Wittenberg University in
Springfield, Ohio.
He was a teacher of graphic arts
at the Troy High School from
1950 to 1979. In 1954 to the
late 1960’s he was assistant
track coach at the Troy High
School. He worked at Par
Stripping Co., Springfield,
Ohio, in surveying and laying
out of high school tracks in
addition to lining tracks. He
was an official at Tri-State
Track meets with photographic
timers.
He was a member
of the Living Word Fellowship,
Troy, Ohio, a Veteran of World
War II in the Army/Air Force and
retired public school teacher
from the Troy High School after
29 years.
Preceding him in
death were his parents; and his
wife, Alice on May 9, 1994.
Those that
survive him include his
daughter, Carole Vardakas of
Troy, Ohio; sons, Charles
Bascombe of Troy and Michael
Bascombe of Charleston, South
Carolina; brother and
sister-in-law, Herbert and Chris
Bascombe of Yuca Valley,
California; sister, Joan Brandau
of Osage; and five
grandchildren.

Marie E. Lubbert
March 27, 2001
Marie E. Lubbert,
age 88, of Riceville, died on
Tuesday, March 20, 2001, at the
Riceville Community Rest Home.
Funeral services were held on
Saturday, March 24, at the St.
Peter’s Lutheran Church in
Riceville. Rev. Michael Parris
officiated and burial was in the
Riverside Cemetery in Riceville.
The Lindstrom Funeral Home was
in charge of the arrangements.
Marie Erma
Lubbert, was born on August 10,
1912, to Thomas and Barbara
Huglin Evans in Winterset, Iowa.
She was one of nine children
born to this marriage. Marie
attended local schools in Garner
and moved with her family to the
Riceville area in 1926. She
continued her education in
Riceville, graduating from the
Riceville High School in 1931.
On February 18, 1935, she was
united in marriage to Otis
Lubbert at the St. John’s
Lutheran Church in Charles City,
Iowa. Otis and Marie farmed in
the Riceville area until their
retirement. Marie also worked
for Oliver until retiring. Otis
passed away on September 26,
1991. In August of 1992, Marie
moved to the Riceville Rest
Home.
Preceding her in
death were her husband, Otis;
three brothers, Frank, Ernest
and Floyd; and two sisters, Ilo
and Louise.
Those that
survive her include her son,
Thomas and wife, Erma Lubbert of
Lakewood, Colorado; two
grandchildren, Cynthia Lynn
Lipscomb of Richmond, Texas and
Timothy Edward Lubbert of
Denver, Colorado; two brothers,
Roy Evans of Coronado,
California and Harold Evans of
Phoenix, Arizona; and one
sister, Mrs. Inez Clark of Cedar
Falls.

Florence Farrell
March 27, 2001
Florence Farrell,
age 87, died peacefully on
Wednesday, March 21, 2001, at
the Osage Rehabilitation and
Health Care Center, Osage.
Funeral services were held on
Saturday, March 24, at the
Schroeder and Sites Funeral
Home, St. Ansgar. Interment was
in the Glendale Cemetery, Des
Moines.
Florence Ann
Farrell, was born on April 25,
1913 in Shelby, Iowa, to Joseph
and Pearl (Savage) Scott.
Florence attended the Roosevelt
High School in Des Moines. After
graduation in 1931 she went on
to the American Institute of
Business, majoring in
accounting.
In 1941, Florence
was married to Melvin Maples in
Glendale, California. Together
they had one daughter, JoAnn
(Joni). In 1954, Florence and
JoAnn moved back to Des Moines
where Florence was employed by
the Valley Bank for 15 years
working in the savings and loan
department, where she worked
until her retirement in 1975.
On March 9, 1973,
Florence was united in marriage
to John (Jerry) Farrell in Des
Moines. Jerry passed away in
September of 1982. Florence
moved to St. Ansgar in the
spring of 1989 and moved to the
Worth Living Center in 1994
where she lived until her death.
She was a
faithful member of the Central
Presbyterian Church in Des
Moines. She was also a member of
the Daughters of Elks, a
committee member of the
Democratic National Party, the
Agency on Aging and was a
volunteer at the governor’s
mansion, Terrace Hill, and
active with the St. Ansgar
Senior Saints, serving as
President.
Preceding her in
death were her parents; her
husband, Jerry; one brother, Dr.
A. Mack Scott; and two sisters,
Mary Jo Glover and Virginia
Gambrill.
Left to cherish
her memory is her daughter,
JoAnn (Joni) Schmidt and her
husband, David of St. Ansgar;
four grandchildren, Emily
(Schmidt) Edwards and her
husband, Alex of Lincoln,
Nebraska, Julie Schmidt of St.
Ansgar, Amanda Schmidt of
Carpenter and Jonathan Schmidt
of St. Ansgar; one
great-grandchild, Alexander
Schmidt of St. Ansgar; one
niece, Cheryl (Scott) Hill and
her husband, Curt of Long Beach,
California; and one nephew,
Randy Scott of Oklahoma City,
Oklahoma.

Mildred "Millie" Koschmeder
March 27, 2001
Millie
Koschmeder, age 74, of
Riceville, died on Friday, March
23, 2001, at her residence,
after a short illness with
cancer.
Funeral services were held on
Monday, March 26, at the St.
Peter’s Lutheran Church in
Riceville. Reverend Michael
Parris officiated and burial was
in the St. Peter’s Lutheran
Cemetery, Riceville. The
Lindstrom Funeral Home was in
charge of the arrangements.
Mildred was born
in Meltonville, Iowa, on June
23, 1926, to Johnnie and Ida
(Kvale) Larson. She was baptized
at the Osage Lutheran Church and
confirmed there on May 26, 1940.
She attended local school in
Meltonville and Mitchell.
Following high school graduation
she moved to St. Paul, Minnesota
and worked as a hostess at Lee’s
Broiler. On April 23, 1949 she
was united in marriage to
Frederick John Koschmeder at the
Little Brown Church in Nashua.
Millie and Fred moved to the
Riceville area in 1950 and
farmed in Howard County all of
their lives. Millie worked at
the Riceville Sales Barn
Restaurant and Pettitt’s Cafe in
Riceville from April 1971 until
she retired in Jan. 1998.
Millie was an
active member of the St. Peter’s
Lutheran Church in Riceville.
She enjoyed participating in
Bible studies, ladies aid,
quilting, Pairs and Spares and
was dedicated to supporting the
youth group. Millie enjoyed
cooking, baking, gardening,
playing cards, photography,
dancing, theater, concerts and
was an avid reader. She also
enjoyed traveling and visiting
her family and many friends.
Millie enjoyed being a member of
the Farmerettes Club for over
forty years. She was an active
member of the Riceville
Community Rest Home Auxiliary
and the American Legion
Auxiliary.
Preceding her in
death were her husband, Fred in
1992; her parents; four
brothers, Arthur, Nuel, Geroge
and Hilbert; and two sisters,
Viola Larson and Hazel Brandt.
Those that
survive her include two sons,
Fred Koschmeder Jr. and his
wife, Betty (Walker) and their
children, Nickolas, Dustin and
Kellie of Riceville; Jeffrey
Koschmeder and his wife, Rachel
of Champlin, Minnesota; three
daughters, Lana Fowler of Kansas
City, Missouri, Anne Koschmeder
and her sons, Chris and Nolan
Grimm of Rochester, Minnesota
and Nicole Armstrong and her
husband, Tom and their children,
Jessica and Eric of
Independence, Missouri; one
sister, Betty Grimm and her
husband, John of Council Bluffs;
and one brother, Virgil Larson
of Fairfield, Iowa and their
families.

Harold R. Hintz

Harold R. Hintz, age 73, of
Faribault, Minnesota, died on
Sunday, March 25, 2001.
Funeral services were held at
the Boldt Funeral Home,
Faribault, on Friday, March 30,
2001. Rev. E.H. Eifert
visitation pastor of the Trinity
Lutheran Church, Faribault,
officiated. Interment was in the
Maple Lawn Cemetery, Faribault.
Harold Richard
Hintz, the son of Harry and
Lillian (Cerveny) Hintz, was
born on July 5, 1927 in
Winfield, Illinois. He served in
the U.S. Army during World War
II. He married Lucille Thorson
on May 25, 1973 in Sioux Falls,
South Dakota. She preceded him
in death on November 25, 1995.
He was formerly employed by the
Champion Implement of St. Ansgar
and also drove truck for Wes
Bronner in Mitchell, Iowa and
the Faribault Woolen Mill.
Preceding him in death were his
parents; his wife, Lucille; and
one brother, Raymond Hintz.
Those that
survive him include two sons,
Russell and wife, Dorene Hintz
of Mitchell and Randy and wife,
Patty Hintz of St. Ansgar; one
daughter, Karen Norton of Rudd;
seven grandchildren; four
great-grandchildren; and one
brother, Edward and Rose Hintz
of Lombard, Illinois.

Verle Enos, age 96, of
Riceville, died on Tuesday,
March 27, 2001, at the Riceville
Nursing Home.
Funeral services were held on
Saturday, March 31, at the
Saratoga Presbyterian Church.
Burial was in the Saratoga

Home in Riceville, was in charge
of the arrangements.

Gerald Klapperich
April 3, 2001
Gerald Klapperich, age 79, of
Stacyville, died suddenly on
Tuesday, March 27, 2001, at his
home in Stacyville.
Funeral services were held on
Saturday, March 31, at the
Visitation Catholic Church in
Stacyville. Rev. Joseph
Schneider officiated and
interment was in the Visitation
Catholic Cemetery, Stacyville.
The Champion-Bucheit Funeral
Home, Osage, in charge of the
arrangements.
Gerald was born
on January 20, 1922 in Meyer,
the son of William and Margaret
(Hemann) Klapperich. Gerald
attended the Sacred Heart
Catholic School in Meyer. He
worked for area farmers and was
employed at the Stacyville Coop
Creamery for nearly 50 years.
Gerald was a member of the
Visitation Catholic Church and
the Catholic Order of Foresters.
Preceding him in
death were his parents; and one
brother, Oswald Klapperich.
Those that
survive him include four
sisters, Helen Klapperich and
her husband, Ambrose of Rose
Creek, Minnesota, Alice
Mullenbach of Johnsburg,
Minnesota, Rosemary Klapperich
of Austin, Minnesota and Carol
Osmudnson of Austin, Minnesota;
18 nieces and nephews; 25
great-nieces and nephews; and
three great-great-nieces and
nephews.

Joanna M. Pickar

Joanna Marie (Rausch) Pickar,
passed away at the Allen
Memorial Hospital in Waterloo,
Iowa, on Wednesday, March 28,
2001, following an extended
illness.
Funeral services were held on
Saturday, March 31, at the
Immaculate Conception Church in
Sumner. Rev. John Purtell
officiated. Interment was
in the Mt. Calvary Catholic
Cemetery, Sumner, Iowa.
She was born on
November 24, 1929, to John and
Anna Glaser Rausch at New
Hampton. She graduated from the
Immaculate Conception High
School at North Washington, in
the class of 1948. On July 6,
1948, she was united in marriage
to Bernard Pickar at Ionia. She
was a resident of Sumner for
many years.
Preceding her in
death were her parents, John and
Anna Rausch; her husband,
Bernard who died on May 3, 1981;
one grandson, Thomas Hoth; and
four brothers, Leander "Mickey",
Louis, Edwin and Vincent.
Joanna is
survived by six daughters and
four sons, Audrey (Bill) Miller
of Anoka, Minnesota, Deborah
