Dean V. Adams

September 16, 2008

Dean V. Adams, age 83, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 7, 2008.

Beloved husband of Loella (nee Gemaehlich) for 62 years. Loving dad of Dana (Sue), Roger (Cindy), Alan (Debra) Adams, Dawn (Kip) Meyer, Rebecca (Jon) Thomas, Anita Jeske and Barbara (Robert) Gibbons. Dear grandpa of Ryan (Kelly) Adams, Melanie (Jason) Tenpas, Valerie, Christopher (Jessica), Eric Adams, Korey (James) Wysocki, Kelly (Sarah) Meyer, Lisa (Joe) Basile, Andrew (Nichole) Sudhoff, Jennifer (Aron) Geurts and Katherine Jeske. Proud great-grandpa of Timothy, Jade, Jake, Alexander, Elizabeth, Micah, Emma and Moriah. Dear brother of Donald (Lillian) Adams, Juanita Arickx and Bonnie (Carl) Grimm.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Glenn, Rene, Wayland and Gene, his twin, and his sisters, Virginia and Wynona. He will be further missed by many nieces, nephews, other family and friends.

A Memorial gathering was held at the Krause Funeral Home, New Berlin, Wisconsin, on Thursday, September 11, from 10-11:00 a.m., with a Memorial Service held at 11:00 a.m. Private burial was in the St. Ansgar Cemetery, St. Ansgar, Iowa.

In lieu of flowers, memorials appreciated to Ruth Hospice, West Allis, Wisconsin or to the Wisconsin Parkinson Assoc. at Sinai Samaritan Medical Center, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Dean will be remembered for his unique sense of humor up to the very end. Not a day went by without a joke.

Elizabeth S. May

September 16, 2008

Elizabeth S. May, 87, of Stacyville, died on Friday, September 12, 2008, at the Stacyville Nursing Home.

A Funeral Mass was held on Monday, September 15, at 11:00 a.m., at the Visitation Catholic Church, Stacyville, with Rev. John Moser officiating. Burial was in the Visitation Cemetery.

Elizabeth was born on July 27, 1921, to Anton and Gertrude (Simon) Halbach in Stacyville, Iowa. She graduated from the Visitation Academy, Stacyville. During WW II she worked for the Navy Department in Washington, DC. Returning to Stacyville she worked for Ralph Wolf Insurance, Wagner Insurance (for 35 years) and the Stacyville Monitor.

She was a member of the National Catholic Order of Foresters, the American Legion Auxiliary and a lifetime member of the Visitation Catholic Church.

She married F.J. (Sonny) Brown on October 20, 1943, he died in 1975. She married Albert May on October 10, 1980.

Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents; husband, F.J. Brown; 2 brothers, Cornelius and Ronald; sister, Priscilla; and daughter, Paulette Ann Harrer.

She is survived by her husband, Albert; children, Carol (David) Hopkey, Tony (Sharon) Brown, Eileen (Dan Palmer) Rosenberg, Marian (Mike) Hegland; step-children, Sherilyn (Bob) Thome, Paula (David) Prescott, Marcia (Jack) Seip, Dennis (Liz) May; grandchildren, Jeff Harrer, Brad (Amy) Hopkey, Bobbi (Jeff) Schmidt, Luke (Stacy) Brown, Sonny Brown, Mason Brown, Mark (Lainy) Rosenberg, Jill (Douglas) Ranson, Joe (Alison) Hegland, Sam (Hayley) Hegland; step-grandchildren, Sara (Greg) Thurston, Chris (Kary) Thome, Nathan Thome, Ben Prescott, Megan (Steve Accard) Prescott, Katherine Seip, Carl Seip, Katherine May, Michelle May; great-grandchildren, Trinity, Sadie, Ella, Ethan, Nora, Logan, Carter and Sophia; and step-great-grandchildren, Andrew, Sam and Carson.

Charles Kenneth Warrington

September 23, 2008

Charles Kenneth Warrington, 85, died on Friday, September 19, 2008, at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center, Osage.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Wednesday, September 24, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Osage, with Rev. John Moser officiating. A luncheon will follow at the KC Hall, Osage. Burial will be in the St. Ansgar Cemetery following the luncheon. Visitation will be held at the Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, St. Ansgar, from 4-7:00 p.m., on Tuesday, with a 5:00 p.m. Scripture Service. His wish was to be cremated.

Charles "Chuck" was born on October 30, 1922, on the family farm in rural St. Ansgar, the son of Frederick and Anna Delia (Monahan) Warrington. Chuck had one sister, Marcene (Heimerman). He was baptized and confirmed at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage. Chuck attended school in Oregon and St. Ansgar. He married Dixie Frank on September 9, 1947 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage and to this union, seven children were born.

He farmed for many years and then began his woodworking hobby, making countless wood items for friends and family. He took great pleasure in spending time with his family and especially his 20 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include Dixie, his wife of 61 years; and three sons, David and his wife, Betty (Wilde) of Plymouth, Tom and his wife, Amy (Thome) of West Bend and Dan and his wife, Wanda (Mayer) of St. Ansgar; four daughters, Becky and her husband, Dean Bartusek of Hanlontown, Donna and her husband, Dave Capuzzi of Rochester, Minnesota, Sue and her husband, John Hackenmiller of Burlington and Dawn and her husband, Eric Tollefson of Charlotte, Iowa; 20 grandchildren, Angi Smith, Holly Overturf, Eric Warrington, Ryan and Evan Bartusek, Brendt, Adam, Luke, Ross and Jordan Warrington, Elissa Berding, Joe and John Warrington, Jenna and Jamie Capuzzi, Tyler, Rachel and Claire Hackenmiller and Walker and Wyatt Tollefson; 15 great-grandchildren; one sister, Marcene Heimerman of Stacyville; and several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to give special thanks to all the doctors, nurses, aides, and caregivers who provided special care for Chuck in the past months.

Beda B. Dodge

September 23, 2008

Beda B. Dodge, age 85, of Osage, died on Sunday, September 21, 2008, at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Thursday, September 25, at the First United Methodist Church in Osage, with Rev. Anna Blaedel officiating. Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery. Visitation is from 5-7:00 p.m., on Wednesday, at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage.

She was born on April 26, 1923, on a farm north of Little Cedar, the daughter of Wilbur and Mary (Penney) Elliott. Beda married Dean Dodge on February 26, 1944. They lived on a farm southeast of Osage and farmed until retiring in 1982, when they moved to Osage. Dean died on November 8, 2005.

Beda was a member of the First United Methodist Church. She was a great caregiver, taking care of her ailing mother, elderly father and her disabled daughter. Beda was also faithful to follow her grandchildren in their sporting and music events and treasured those times.

Her survivors include a daughter, Ruth Dodge of Osage; son, The Rev. Robert Dodge and his wife, Brenda of Britt; 6 grandchildren, Beda Dodge of Elkhart, Indiana, Kama Dodge of Waterloo, Timothy Dodge and his wife, Hillary of Altoona, Kristin Volk and her husband, Ryan of Altoona, Amy Dodge of Britt and Jeremy Dodge of Britt; 2 great-grandsons, Samuel Dodge and Caleb Volk; and a sister, Frances Morse of Osage.

Beda was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dean; brother, Ivan; and brother-in-law, Beverly Morse.

Byron B. Lesch

September 23, 2008

Byron B. Lesch, died on April 18, 2008, and was cremated per his wish. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held on Saturday, October 4, 2008, at the Bethel Presbyterian Church, Waterloo, Iowa, at 11:00 a.m., with a luncheon immediately following. All family and friends are invited to come.

Byron B. Lesch, was born on September 9, 1913 in Mount Union, to Herman and Julia (Popham) Lesch, the third of four sons. He married Juliet Ashley on October 14, 1951 in Waseca, Minnesota. She preceded him in death on January 15, 1990.

Byron grew up in the Rockford and Osage areas of Iowa. Music was a family affair in his life, with himself playing the flute and saxophone in various bands and orchestras in school and church. He also sang in many choirs and choruses. While farming was the main focus in his younger years, he and his brother, Leroy also ran a trucking and corn-shelling business from 1932-1942.

In 1942, Byron was drafted into the U.S. Army and was stationed in Wales, England, Scotland and Norway until 1945. He served with the 863rd Ordinance Company in HAM Co. (Heavy Automotive Maintenance). Five years after returning home, he moved to Waseca where he became a tool maker for the E.F. Johnson Co. Upon joining a local Congregational Church, he sang in the choir and met his future wife, Juliet. In 1957, Byron and Juliet bought the Ashley Hotel in Jackson, Minnesota and ran it for 11 years. There they joined the Presbyterian Church.

The year 1968 opened a new chapter in their lives when Byron was asked to consider being an all-around maintenance man at Sheldon Jackson College in Sitka, Alaska. He accepted the job, becoming assistant engineer and devoted the next 20 years to helping the college. Upon his retirement and Juliet's death, he returned to Waterloo in 1993 to be near his only surviving brother, Donald, but continued his work in setting up mission funds for the church. His true passion in life was to help the less fortunate, whether by a helping hand, kind word or seed money for a new start.

Survivors include his brother, Donald Lesch of Waterloo; and many nieces and nephews and their families.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and brothers, Leroy and Roger.

Janice Rae Martin

September 30, 2008

Janice Rae Martin, age 72, of Riceville, passed away at her residence in rural Riceville on Monday, September 22, 2008.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, September 25, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Riceville, at 10:30 a.m., with the Rev. Ray E. Atwood officiating. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery in Riceville.

Janice was born in Paxton, Nebraska, on September 5, 1936, to Frank and Hildred (Oberg) Lammers. She attended local schools and graduated from the Paxton High School. She then attended the Central Business College in Denver, Colorado. Janice was united in marriage to Kenneth Martin on June 2, 1956 in Rochester, Minnesota, at the St. Pius X Catholic Church. Janice worked in the insurance claims dept. of the Mitchell County Regional Health Care in Osage, Iowa for 36 Years. After her retirement Janice worked part time for the Iowa Agricultural Statistics of Des Moines Iowa. She also enjoyed working with her daughter, Lisa, at the Garden Cards and More in Lime Springs, Iowa.

Janice was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church of Riceville, St. Anne's Rosary Society, North Iowa Quilter's Guild, Riceville Quilters and the Community Craft Club. She enjoyed dancing, quilting, gardening, attending auctions at Cedar Valley Auction and especially enjoyed Healing Touch.

Survivors include her husband, Kenneth Martin of Riceville; six children, Laurie (Dan) Schwarck of Riceville, Cathy Martin of Shell Rock, Doug (Sue) Martin of Monona, Kellie (Tim) Martin of Bettendorf, Amy (Duane) Walther of Denver and Lisa Smith of Lime Springs; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Janice was preceded in death by her parents.

Leo Smith

September 30, 2008

Leo Smith, age 101, of Stacyville, Iowa, died on Thursday September 25, 2008, at the Stacyville Nursing Home in Stacyville, Iowa.

Funeral services were held on Monday, September 29, at the Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville, with Father John Moser officiating. Burial will take place in the Visitation Cemetery.

Leo Smith, was born on July 31, 1907 in Adams Township, Minnesota, to Joseph and Elizabeth (Krebsbach) Smith. Leo married Stella Heimerman on October 26, 1937, at the Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville. He grew up on a farm north of Stacyville. He farmed for 75 years. The last farm was 6 miles northwest of Stacyville where he and Stella raised their family. They moved to Stacyville in 1986.

He was known for his faith, gentle spirit, and hard work. He loved farming and gardening and took special pride in raising potatoes until 3 years ago. He was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters and the Visitation Catholic Church.

He is survived by his wife, Stella of Stacyville; son, Daniel (Sharon) Smith of Burnsville, Minnesota; daughters, Barbara Thome of Stacyville, Marilyn (Robert) Lermon of Mantorville, Minnesota and Marian (Art) Anderson of Fairbault, Minnesota; nine granddaughters; 17 great-grandchildren; and brothers, Bernard Smith of Stacyville and Gerwin Smith of Mitchell.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Elizabeth Smith; sisters, Martha Jax and Margaret Smith; brothers, Nick, Greg, Ray and Gilbert; great-grandsons, Sam and Adam Bruggeman; and son-in-law, Norbie Thome.

Lucille Duenow

September 30, 2008

Lucille Duenow, formerly of St. Ansgar and the last few years of Rochester, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 26, 2008, at the Faith Lutheran Nursing Home in Osage, Iowa.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, September 28, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar, with Rev. Byron Northwick officiating. Burial was in the St. Ansgar Cemetery. Visitation was held on Saturday, at the Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, St. Ansgar.

Lucille was born on September 2, 1922 and grew up in Hampton, Iowa. She studied to be a cosmetologist in Mason City and owned and operated her own beauty salon for 58 years in Saint Ansgar. She met and married Merle Duenow of Saint Ansgar on February 24, 1943, in St. Louis, Missouri. They were married for 46 years.

Her hobbies included cooking, sewing, numerous clubs and of course her love for playing any card games.

Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Larry (Peggy) Guenther of Port Washington, Wisconsin, Sandra Major of Osage, Mrs. Byron (Jayne) Edge and Mrs. David (Judy) Klompenhower, both of Rochester, Minnesota; one son, retired Maj. Russell Duenow and wife, Afton of Fredericksburg, Virginia; and 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; four sisters; a sister-in-law; a brother-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; beloved husband, Merle Duenow; one son, Rickey; one brother; and two sisters.

Samuel Scott Zimmerman

September 30, 2008

Samuel Scott Zimmerman, age 1 year 3 months and 3 days, son of David E. and Nora (Newswanger) Zimmerman, passed away on Saturday, September 27, 2008, after a farming accident at his home.

Funeral services will be held at the South Osage Mennonite Church of Osage, on Wednesday, October 1, at 9:30 a.m. Ministers for the service will be Elvin Brubaker, Mervin Nolt, Landis Oberholtzer and Amos Martin. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation well be held at the family home on Tuesday, September 30, during the hours of 2-4:00 p.m. and 6-8:00 p.m. and the morning of the service.
