Marlys Ann McLean

August 21, 2008

Marlys Ann McLean, 59, of Andover and New Ulm, Minnesota, died on Tuesday, August 19, 2008, at her home in Andover. Massachusetts.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m., on Friday, August 22, at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm, with Monsignor John A. Richter celebrating the Mass. Burial was in the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery.

Marlys Ann Muehlbauer was born in New Ulm, Minnesota, on March 27, 1949, to Lyle E. and Bertha M. (Sellner) Muehlbauer. She grew up on a four-generation Muehlbauer farm in Lafayette Township in Nicollet County and for five years she attended the country school one-half mile from her home farm. For three years she attended the Holy Trinity Grade School and graduated in 1967 from the Cathedral High School in New Ulm. Four years later Marlys graduated from Mankato State University with a teaching degree in German and minors in French and Art. Her student teaching was done in 1971 at the American School in Mexico City, Mexico. Several years later Marlys turned her art degree into a double major at St. Cloud State University.

Marlys' first teaching position took her to Osage, Iowa, where she taught German for four years. As she later looked back on her career, those years in the small town of Osage became her favorite memories of her years in education. But in 1976 Marlys was anxious to return to her home state and took a job with the Anoka-Hennepin District, followed by 5 years at St. Francis, Minnesota and over 20 years at Spring Lake Park.

Marlys was very much a hometown girl and spent many weekends and most of her summers back in New Ulm. She loved all things German. She never missed a weekend of Heritage Fest in New Ulm for 31 years except for 1988, when she and her mother went to Germany to travel and look up her Sellner and Muehlbauer roots in the small towns of the Bohemian Forest. Marlys was an avid dancer in Twin Cities ballrooms and traveled to many polka festivals in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan. She loved to travel in the United States and Europe and especially liked to visit small towns and savor what that locale had to offer, as well as capture it in photos. Marlys was an artist in photography, developing her own negatives and prints in the darkroom and she taught high school photography for many years.

On August 15, 1992, Marlys married James Hannis McLean Jr. at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm. They continued to live in Andover where Marlys had purchased a house in 1980. In 2004, Marlys and Jim bought 14 acres in Brown County where they planned to retire. With the purchase of the New Ulm property Marlys spent more time than ever in her hometown. She had plans of building a new home and had looked forward to planting flower and vegetable gardens, spending time with her family and friends, and being active in the community.

Marlys is survived by her husband, Jim; brother and sister-in-law, Paul and Susan Muehlbauer of New Ulm; her aunt and godmother, Anna Hacker of Lafayette; as well as two other aunts, one uncle, and 49 first cousins.

She is survived by many very good and loyal friends from high school, college, ballroom dancing, and teaching.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Christopher and Marianna (Schloegel) Sellner and Louis and Anna (Klossner) Muehlbauer; mother in 1999 and father in 2003; thirty aunts and uncles; and thirteen first cousins.
