GEORGE LEWIS
STOTSER
October
23, 1931 - January 24, 2013
ELDORA
George
Lewis Stotser, 81, died Thursday, Jan.
24, 2013, at the Eldora Nursing and
Rehabilitation Center in Eldora where he
had been a resident since July 2009.
Cremation rites will be accorded. A
memorial service with military honors
was held Saturday, Feb. 2, at St. John
Lutheran Church in Hubbard. A private
committal service will be held at a
later date. George Lewis Stotser was
born on the family farm south of
Robertson, Iowa, on Oct. 23, 1931, the
first of eight children of Harold and
Florence Erickson Stotser. George
attended Robertson Country School and
Iowa Falls Public Schools when the
Robertson Country School closed.
Following in his father’s footsteps,
George wrestled during high school and
started a string of Stotser boys who
wrestled for the Cadets. George
graduated from high school with the
Class of 1950. With tensions building in
Korea, George enlisted in the U.S. Navy
and within days after his high school
graduation, George boarded a train bound
for San Diego, Calif., where he received
his recruit training. Electronics school
in Millington, Tenn., was his next
assignment before returning to San Diego
for radio school and aircrew training at
Brown Field.
While attending military schools in
Tennessee and San Diego, George joined
the Navy wrestling teams and wrestled
against college teams in the southeast
and on the west coast. At one of the
wrestling meets, George met Harold
Nichols, coach of Arkansas State
University, who invited George to come
wrestle for him after his military
service. Harold Nichols would, a short
time later, start his legendary coaching
career at Iowa State University.
After flight training at Brown Field,
George was assigned to the USS Bataan,
CVL-29 as a radio operator in TBM
Avenger aircraft flying patrols in
support of UN operations in Korea and
Okinawa. George was discharged from the
U.S. Navy at Hunter’s Point, Calif., in
May 1954 and returned to Iowa. Despite
the allure of a college wrestling
opportunity, George positioned himself
for a career with Collins Radio in Cedar
Rapids, but that also would change after
meeting Velda Balvanz of Hubbard.
On Dec. 4, 1954, George and Velda were
married in St. John Lutheran Church.
Instead of the bright lights of the
city, George and Velda started farming
1/4 mile west of Joe’s Station and when
Velda’s folks moved to town in 1958,
George and Velda moved to the Balvanz
farm north of Hubbard.
George loved to fly; whether it was on
an occasional business trip or just for
fun to look over the crops on a warm
summer evening. He enjoyed fishing
smallmouth bass in the South Fork and
the Iowa River, but the elusive walleye
was the fish he sought most in waters of
Minnesota and Canada. George would work
for hours during the winter evenings
casting and painting fishing jigs for
the upcoming fishing season. But he will
perhaps be most known for being up to a
friendly game of cards be it Cribbage,
Pinochle or Pepper. When Crippen’s Café
closed, the neighborhood started meeting
at George and Velda’s for coffee and a
game of cards. George was especially
fond of playing Hearts with the
grandkids when they were home for the
holidays.
George was a member of St. John Lutheran
Church, Hubbard, the American Legion,
Post #4, Hubbard, Veterans of Foreign
War, Post #1886 of Buckeye and a
longtime member of the Roadrunner Flying
Club in Radcliffe.
George is survived by his wife, Velda of
Hubbard; children, James (Brenda) of
Iowa Falls, DeeAnn Garmoe of Windsor
Heights, and Peggy of Cedar Rapids; six
grandchildren, Dustin (Madeleine) and
Bjorn (Elizabeth), both of Springfield,
Mo., Sgt. Guthrie (Cortney) of Ft.
Bragg, N.C., and Leif (Fairley) of
Austin, Texas., Nicole Garmoe of Cedar
Falls, and TJ Garmoe of Des Moines; two
great-grandchildren, Lilia of
Springfield, Mo., and Maddox of Ft.
Bragg, N.C.; a sister, Lois (Jack)
Stevens of Alexandria, Va.; and a
brother, Bruce (Francis) of Janesville.
