Eleanor Mae Lockey Klinkel was born July 20, 1927, in Spencer, the daughter of Harry and Martha (Paisley) Lockey. Eleanor was brought up with love and care as the sixth of nine children. After graduation from Nashua Public School in 1947, Eleanor was a school teacher from 1947 until 1951 while she took classes at Wartburg College in Waverly. June 17, 1951 was a joyous day for Eleanor as she married the love of her life, James Klinkel, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They settled in Charles City and raised four boys and one girl: Wayne, Victor, Robert, Douglas and Kimberly. Eleanor was an amazing mother and grandmother. Her grandchildren will surely carry on the tradition of mixing, rolling, cutting out, and finally baking the Christmas cookies. She always made sure there was plenty of dough for pre-cooking samplings. Despite an early onset of arthritis, Eleanor remained active in the Trinity United Methodist Church and in social circles. In the church, she participated as: Sunday School and Bible School Teacher, Central Methodist and Trinity United Methodist Junior and Senior High Counselor, President of the United Methodist Women (UMW) and served in a number of other UMW offices, Chairperson on Council on Ministries and a number of other church commissions, and Lay Delegate to the Iowa Annual Conference for 12 years. In community organizations, she was: Cub Scout Den Mother, Girl Scout Leader, City Chairman of T. B. Health Association (latter known as the Iowa Lung Association), Floyd County and Food Box Volunteer, Happy Hour Club. In later years, Eleanor also volunteered her time to the Treasure Chest (a second-hand store in Charles City). As she grew older, Eleanor developed osteoporosis and had a number of bone problems. However, she never complained. She was always the first to praise God for giving her another day. She enhanced lives simply by entering them. Her spirit and memory will live on for years and years to come.

Eleanor is survived by three sons, Wayne (Lynne) Klinkel of Montana City, Mont., Bob (Judy) Klinkel of Ames, Doug (Kim) Klinkel of Charles City; her daughter Kim (Gary) Christiansen of Charles City; 14 grandchildren; a great-granddaughter, Hayden Dybevik; her brothers, Chip (Faith) Lockey of Bassett, Dale (Joyce) Lockey of Swan, and Donnie Lockey and special friend Lynda of Fla: and her sisters, Bernie Michael of Charles City, Arvana Boyd of Charles City, Martha Simerson of Hartford, and Evelyn Roethler of Charles City.

James ‘Jim’ Welton

James "Jim" Martin Welton, 34, of Durango, Colo., formerly of Charles City, Iowa, died Friday Oct. 17, 2008, from injuries sustained in a mountain climbing accident in Zion National Park, Utah.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Charles City, with Rev. Carl Ries celebrating the Mass. Internment will take place at a later date at Calvary Cemetery in Charles City. The date for an additional memorial service in the Salt Lake City, Utah area, has yet to be determined.

Friends may greet the family 4-8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24, at Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in New Hampton, where there will be a 7 p.m. Scripture Service. Visitation continues an hour prior to the Mass at the church.

James was born Feb.y 21, 1974, in Osage, the son of Douglas and Malinda (Jones) Welton. He attended Immaculate Conception Catholic School in Charles City and was a 1992 graduate of Charles City High School. He then attended Loras College in Dubuque. James appeared in several drama performances, played high school basketball and was in the German-American Partnership Program. He was an Eagle Scout and remained active in scouts after high school, where he developed his love for climbing. He was most recently self-employed as an ISA certified arborist.

James had to live wherever there were mountains to climb. He loved the wilderness, was a mountain first-responder, a seasoned mountain climber and camper and recently completed an ultra-marathon. James made climbing look easy; he was a flowing climber with an effortless style.

James often questioned if he was living his life in the “correct” way, or if he should pay more mind to societal things like a house, a stable income, settling down and more. He gave unconditional love and friendship and an honest desire to be a true friend. He was a life-long learner as well as a natural teacher. He has absolutely positively affected each person who had the pleasure of knowing him. James left us doing what he loved, but more than that he blazed his path though life with an untarnished idealism. In the end, perhaps James had actually figured out life and was called away for something more important. He will live on in our memories forever.

Survivors include his parents, Doug and Malinda Welton of New Hampton; his companion, Jamie Fields of Salt Lake City, Utah; two sisters, Jennifer Welton of Ames, and Meredith Welton Voight (Nathan) of Cedar Rapids; one brother, Nathaniel Welton of Rochester, Minn.; his maternal grandparents, Martin and Cleo Jones of Charles City; his paternal grandmother, Betty Welton of New Hampton; an uncle Richard (Diane) Welton of Mora, Minn.; an aunt, Tara Lane of Nashua, and several cousins.
