Velma Murphy, 88, of Charles City, died Sunday, Nov. 30, 2008, at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.
Funeral services for Velma Murphy will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City, with Pastor William Kelly officiating. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens rural Charles City. Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 9:30 a.m. until service time. Velma Buella Fisher Murphy was born March 11, 1920, at Charles City, the daughter of Emil and Fannie (Lines) Fisher. She graduated from the Charles City High School in 1938. On June 3, 1939, she was united in marriage to Robert Murphy. They lived in the Floyd County area until Robert entered the United States Army in April of 1943. When he returned they lived the rest of their lives in Charles City. Robert died on Jan. 29, 1999. Velma’s interests included shopping and collecting Hummels. Living family members include a brother, Amil (Dorothy) Fisher of Charles City; a nephew, Gary (Ann) Fisher of Charles City; two nieces, Susan Fisher of Burnsville, Minn. and Donna (Harold) Leek of Dodgeville, Wisc.; several great nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Marrian Linde of Charles City. Raymond D. Hovey, 77 of 208 South Iowa, Charles City, died Thursday, Nov. 28, 2008, at the Veterans Hospital, Iowa City.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 2, at Fullerton Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today at the funeral home and again one hour prior to services. A parish wake service will be held at 6 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Raymond Dever was born on Nov. 8, 1931, in Independence, the son to George A. and Velma A. (McDonald) Hovey. At age 3, the family moved to Charles City and Ray received his education through the Charles City educational system. He was inducted into the Army and entered service at the Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland serving during the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1954 form Camp Carson, in Colorado. For 38-1/2 years, he was employed at White Farm, retiring in November 1993. On June 6, 1955, he was united in marriage to Helen M. Frascht at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greene. To this union was born three daughters. Ray was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and a lifetime member of the VFW. He enjoyed his flower and vegetable gardens and decorating his yard and home for Christmas. His greatest enjoyment was spending time with his grandchildren and great grandson. For several winters he traveled to Arizona. Surviving Ray are his three daughters: Debra (David) Raper of Oregon, Vicky (David) Bast of Nashua and Patsy (Michael) Barragy, Clear Lake; seven grandchildren: Misty Hanke, Shane Hultgren, Jessica Raper, Brian Bast, Amanda Hanson and Christopher and Taylor Barragy; and two great-grandchildren: Alex Hanson and Alexis Hultgren; one sister Ruth (Dale) Chestek, Charles City; one brother George (LuJane) Hovey, Dickinson, Texas; and two sister-in-laws Katherine and Betty Hovey, both of Charles City. His wife Helen in 1993, his parents, one sister Lois Hovey and two brothers, Glen and Kenneth Hovey, preceded him in death. Frances E. Gordon, 88, of Waterloo, died Sunday, Nov. 30, 2008, at the Denver Sunset Home of congestive heart failure.

Carl "Judd" Krueger Jr., age 78 of New Hampton, died Saturday morning, Nov. 29, 2008.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 4, at Trinity Lutheran Church, New Hampton with Pastor Kevin Frey officiating. Paul Krueger will be the reader and the crossbearer will be Eddie Rausch. The pall will be placed in the casket by his family. Interment with military honors will be in the Grace Lutheran Cemetery, rural Tripoli. Honorary pallbearers are Tony Schissel, Harold Peters, Dave Drewelow, Allan Peters, Dennis Buckendahl, Harlan Peters, Donny Peters and Danny Peters. Carl “Judd” Krueger Jr. was born Feb. 18, 1930, in rural Bremer County, the son of Carl William and Elsa Louise (Warnke) Krueger Sr. He attended school in Frederika until the 10th grade and was then a 1947 graduate of the New Hampton High School. In 1951, he was inducted into the United States Army. He served during the Korean Conflict until being honorably discharged as a corporal in 1953. Upon returning home, Judd engaged in farming with his brother and his wife, Robert and Norma Krueger. They farmed west of New Hampton and Judd became a faithful father to nine children through his brother’s family. He took them to their activities, took them fishing and worked the farm side-by-side with them. He moved into town with Bob and Norma in 1992 and fully retired in 1994. Survivors include one brother, Herb Krueger of Tripoli; nine nieces and nephews who he raised as if his own: Bob (Robin) Krueger of Charles City, Paul (Pat) Krueger of New Hampton, Dr. Raymond (Connie) Krueger of Spring Valley, Minn., Gordon (Donita) Krueger of Cedar Falls, Linda (Brian) Rieckenberg of Poulsbo, Wash., Karen (Andy) Sinnwell of Forest City, Becky (Dick) Rausch of Ionia, Nancy (William) Gardner of St. Francis, Minn., Beth (Jamy) Ball of Mt. Mary later attended public school in Bayfield, Wis. and Wisconsin State School in Sparta, Wis. Later in Mary’s life, she moved to Rockford, where she lived and enjoyed life with her significant other, William Graham. Mary enjoyed doing different types of crafts, shopping and going fishing with William. ROCKFORD — Donald H. Jones, 94, of Rockford, died Thursday, Dec. 4, 2008 at the Nora Springs Care Center.

Donald was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Royal Neighbors. He enjoyed working with his cattle, playing cards and spending time with family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. William “Sam” Farner, 70 of 1537 Matterhorn Dr. NE. and Estero, Fla. died Friday Dec. 5, 2008 at the Dennis and Donna Hospice House of Mercy after a short illness. Survivors include his wife Dee, four brothers Steve (LaVonne) of Ames, Cy (Sandra) of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Tom (Jeanne) of Carroll; and two sisters, Sally (John) Norgaard and Sara (Dennis) Anderson all of Carroll. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a nephew, Christopher John Farner. Sam was born on Dec. 17, 1937 in Carroll, the son of William and Lois Hulsebus Farner. As a teen he started working at Farner-Bocken and graduated from the Carroll High School in 1957. He attended Buena Vista University in Storm Lake. He started his career as a sales rep. for the General Cigar Co. and later went into partnership in the Farner-Hewett Co. in Charles City. He married Delores “Dee” Jacobs Reckner on Dec. 28, 1967 in Las Vegas, Nev. In 1981 he became president of the Farner-Bocken Cedar Rapids Company, retiring in 2007. Sam continued to serve on the Farner-Bocken Board of Directors. Sam was a member of and Past President of I.A.T.D., an honorary member of the National I Club Board, Elmcrest Country Club, and the Wildcat Run Country Club in Estero, Fla. Memorial donations may be given to the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, the Cedar Valley Humane Society or to the charity of the donor’s choice. Leo proudly served with the United States Army in Europe during World War II. On Dec. 1, 1947, he was united in marriage to Barbara Nelson at Austin, Minn. Leo worked at Albaugh Pontiac, Harrison Ford, and from 1962 to 1994 for Allied Construction. He was a member of Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Moose Lodge, American Legion, and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Leo enjoyed working on cars and traveling to see his family. Brenda S. Stevens, age 57 of Ely, died Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008 in her home after fighting a courageous battle with cancer for the past 14 years. She was born April 22, 1951 in Charles City, the daughter of Earl and Thelma Kellogg. Brenda and Timothy Stevens were united in marriage on Oct. 13, 1979 in Rapid City, S.D.
She is survived by her husband, Timothy; son, Bob (Amy) Kellogg; daughter, Amanda Stevens; sisters, Karen (Bobby) Hueton of Des Moines, and Linda Hoy of Charles City; brothers, Duane (Sandy) Kellogg, Jim Kellogg, and Bill (Patty) Kellogg, all of Charles City; mother, Thelma Kellogg of Charles City and two grandchildren, Cole and Courtney Kellogg. She is preceded in death by her father, Earl Kellogg; and brother-in-law, Terry Hoy. Alma A. Angell, age 105, of Osage, died Thursday, Dec. 11, 2008, at the Faith Lutheran Home in Osage. Alma was born Dec. 1, 1903, near Osage, the daughter of Bryon and Mabel (McLean) Loney. She married Merlyn W. Angell on Aug. 23, 1925, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They farmed near Osage until 1961, and then lived in Osage.
Merlyn died in 1989. Alma taught for several years in area country schools. She was the sixth person nationally to sign up as an Amway distributor. Alma was a member of the United Church of Christ in Osage. She greatly enjoyed her family. Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 13, 2008, at the United Church of Christ in Osage, with Pastor Ruth Moerdyk officiating. Inurnment will be at the Osage Cemetery. There will be a time for lunch and fellowship following the service at the church. Alma is survived by three sons, Mervel “Duke” (Neva) Angell of Osage, Glen (Helen) Angell of New Hampton, Keith (Carmen) Angell of Charles City; 16 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; and 20 great-great-grandchildren. Walter William Gabelmann, 86, of Riceville, passed away on Dec. 14, 2008 at the Golden Living Center in Rochester, Minn. Funeral services will be held at the First Congregational United Church of Christ In Riceville on Wednesday Dec. 17, at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Mary Hatch and Rev. Dan Christensen officiating. Walter was born on the family farm in Dayton Township in Butler County near Greene on June 27, 1922 to Christian William and Christina Maria (Kehret) Gabelmann. He attended country schools. On Feb. 20, 1946, Walt was united in marriage to Helene Elizabeth Meinzer at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Charles City. From 1947 to 1959, Walt and Helene made their home in Powersville. In 1959 they moved to Riceville. Walt was a livestock dealer, served the city of Riceville as mayor for 20 years, was a great story teller and friend to many. Survivors include: his daughter, Ruthann Brekke and her husband Frank of Rochester, Minn.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren: Jason Gansen and his wife Shauna , and their daughter Kate, of Brandon S.D., Jeremy Gansen and his wife Angie and their son Caiden, of Cannon Falls, Minn., Jeff Gansen and his wife Heather and their daughter Lydia of Mason City, Jessica Brekke and her son Hunter of Rochester, Minn., and Eric Brekke of Seeley, Calif.; one sister: Hulda Everding of Tripola; two sister-in-laws: Kathryn Gabelmann of Clear Lake, and Mert Cummings of Keokuk; and many nieces and nephews. Dale Stauffer, 88, of Charles City, died Sunday, Dec. 14, 2008, at the11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home.
Funeral services for Dale Stauffer will be held 11 a.m. Friday at the Trinity United Methodist Church. Pastor Gary Van Wert will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery at Greene. Dale John Stauffer was born Nov. 14, 1920, in Butler County, the son of John and Gesina (Menken) Stauffer. He graduated from the Allison High School in 1937. On June 22, 1941, he was united in marriage to Alice Litterer. They farmed all their lives in the Allison, Greene, Nashua and Charles City areas. Alice died on Jan. 16, 1997. Dale had a dehorning business for many years that served farmers in the surrounding area. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church where he had served on several of the church boards, Farm Bureau, Floyd County Mutual, and Floyd County Soil Conservation. Dale had also served as a 4-H leader. He always enjoyed the family fishing trips to Canada. Dale always took a special interest in children of all ages and will be remembered for helping them in whatever way he could. Living family members include two daughters, Lin (Doug) Sinclair and Vicky (Larry) Sonne both of Charles City; 11 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Lois Stauffer of Allison; a brother, Lyle (Gladys) Stauffer of Greene; a brother-in-law, Ken (Darlene) Litterer of Maquoketa; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; a son, Roger Stauffer; and a sister, Margaret Stauffer. Richard S. Thomsen was born in Audubon, Sept. 22, 1932 and died at his home in New York City, Nov. 18, 2008, at age 76. He is survived by his wife, Libby George Colahan Thomsen of New York City; former wife Barbara Channer Thomsen of Charles City, children Anders Thomsen (Sarah) of Savannah, Ga., and Kira Thomsen-Cheek (Russel) of Seattle, Wash; Granddaughter Freya Emmet Thomsen, brother Frank Thomsen of Independence, Ore., sister Janet Schwarzkopf, of Charles City, and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, ersatz grandchildren, nieces and nephews and countless lives and careers he influenced around the country.
He was a graduate of the University of Iowa and held B.A. and M.A. degrees with an ABD in Journalism. He was an Air Force pilot at the end of the Korean War; a print and radio journalist and television anchorman; college professor; artistic director of the Boarshead Michigan Public Theater of Lansing, Mich., (where he was the Michiganian of the Year in the Arts in 1981.). He was a playwright, an actor and director in New York City for the last 24 years. He performed on Broadway, off-Broadway and in theaters across the country, on national tours and in numerous films and TV shows out of New York. He last worked on stage this January through March at The Denver Center Theater as Bardolf in The Merry Wives of Windsor, directed by his friend David Ivers and will be seen soon in a yet to be released episode entitled "Thaw" of FX's Rescue Me. His remains have been donated to the Mt. Sinai Medical School. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in his name to a small non-profit professional and union theater company of your choice. Walter William Gabelmann, 86, of Riceville, passed away on Dec. 14, 2008 at the Golden Living Center in Rochester, Minn. Walter was born on the family farm in Dayton Township in Butler County near Greene on June 27, 1922 to Christian William and Christina Maria (Kehret) Gabelmann. He attended country schools. On Feb. 20, 1946, Walt was united in marriage to Helene Elizabeth Meinzer at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Charles City. From 1947 to 1959, Walt and Helene made their home in Powersville. In 1959 they moved to Riceville. Walt was a livestock dealer, served the city of Riceville as mayor for 20 years, was a great story teller and friend to many. Survivors include: his daughter, Ruthann Brekke and her husband Frank of Rochester, Minn.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren: Jason Gansen and his wife Shauna , and their daughter Kate, of Brandon S.D., Jeremy Gansen and his wife Angie and their son Caiden, of Cannon Falls, Minn., Jeff Gansen and his wife Heather and their daughter Lydia of Mason City, Jessica Brekke and her son Hunter of Rochester, Minn., and Eric Brekke of Seeley, Calif.; one sister: Hulda Everding of Tripola; two sister-in-laws: Kathryn Gabelmann of Clear Lake, and Mert Cummings of Keokuk; and many nieces and nephews. Vera Lack, age 75, of Orchard, died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2008, at her home. Vera was born Jan. 11, 1933, at Colwell, Iowa, the daughter of George and Lulu (Rose) Venz. Vera graduated from Colwell High School. She was employed at and retired from the Mitchell County Hospital.
She was a member of the Osage V.F.W. Auxiliary. Vera embraced life fully, enjoying all types of outdoor activities, including farming, raising cattle, hunting, fishing, and trapping. She also enjoyed gardening. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13, 2008, at the First Congregational Church, U.C.C. in Orchard, with Pastor Jan Tjaden officiating. Alma A. Angell, age 105, of Osage, died Thursday, Dec. 11, 2008, at the Faith Lutheran Home in Osage. Alma was born Dec. 1, 1903, near Osage, the daughter of Bryon and Mabel (McLean) Loney. She married Merlyn W. Angell on Aug. 23, 1925, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They farmed near Osage until 1961, and then lived in Osage.
Merlyn died in 1989. Alma taught for several years in area country schools. She was the sixth person nationally to sign up as an Amway distributor. Alma was a member of the United Church of Christ in Osage. She greatly enjoyed her family. Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 13, 2008, at the United Church of Christ in Osage, with Pastor Ruth Moerdyk officiating. Inurnment will be at the Osage Cemetery. There will be a time for lunch and fellowship following the service at the church. He moved to Osage in 1957 where he met Edna Lincke, and the couple was united in marriage on April 11, 1959. The couple lived in Keokuk briefly before settling in Charles City in 1960. He retired from the telephone company in 1984 after 37 years of service. Lyle spent his retirement years dealing in antiques, cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes and spending time with his family. RUDD — Ronald Harvey Norby, 66, of 607 Taylor St. in Rudd, died
Wednesday, Dec.17, 2008, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit,
Mason City.
Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Monday, Dec. 22, at the Rudd United Methodist Church, 611 6th St., with Rev. Wendy Johannesen officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, Rudd. Visitation will be held from 3-5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 21, at Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 North Hawkeye, Nora Springs. Memorials may be directed to the Ronald Norby memorial fund, so that his family may distribute them between North Iowa Hospice and Research for Cancer. Ronald H. Norby was born on the family farm on Jan. 18, 1942, in Rudd, the son Robert and Doris (Kuhlemeier) Norby. Ron was raised on the farm and lived in the Rudd area all his life. He graduated from Rockford High School in 1960 and from Iowa State University in 1965, with an animal science degree. Ron enlisted into the National Guard on November of 1965 and was honorably discharged on Oct. 31, 1971. Ron was united in marriage to Mary Escobedo, on August 24, 1970; to this union three children were born. He was self employed owning his own trucking business. Ron also worked at Kum & Go and the 218 Floyd Express as a cashier. Ron enjoyed sports, fishing, tractors, gardening, woodworking, and loved animals especially his pets! He also liked to spend time with his honorary grandchildren, Ben and Sarah Parcher. He was a member of the Rudd Methodist Church, American Legion, and Lions Club. Ron is survived by his wife Mary Norby, Rudd, children, Johnnie Norby, Los Angeles, Calif., Michael Norby, San Diego, Calif., and Kimberley Norby, of San Diego, Calif.; honorary grandchildren Ben and Sarah Parcher; siblings, Barbara (Toby) Enema, Des Moines, Carolyn (Tom) Smith, Woden, William (Vickie) Norby, Rudd; along with several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Robert "Whitey" Marvin, 81, of Humboldt, passed away

Whitey is survived by his wife, Charlotte Marvin of Humboldt; daughters, Margaret (Don) Hollingshead of Sioux City and Wendy (Tom) Froh of Dakota City; sons, Danny (Jamie) Marvin of Dakota City, Terry (Robin) Marvin of St. Paul Park, Minn., and Kris (Susan) Marvin of Humboldt; 11 grandchildren; 11 Great Grandchildren; brothers, Leslie Marvin of Nebraska and Keith (Anna Mae) Marvin of Charles City; and sisters, Dorothy Simpson of St. Ansgar, and Merle Crooks and Phyllis Pitz both of Charles City. Robert Lee Marvin, the son of Walter and Pearl (Emery) Marvin was born March 8, 1927 on a farm near Riceville. He attended country school near Orchard and following his education, worked for farmers in the area and in Minnesota. At he age of 18, Robert enlisted into the United States Army in early 1945. He received his basic training at Fort Wolters in Texas and served in Germany, North Africa, and Iran. He returned home for a time before reenlisting and was sent to Alaska where he served as a military policeman. Following his discharge, he went to work for the Oliver Corporation at Charles City. He was united in marriage to Charlotte Reasland on Sept. 25, 1949 and the couple made their home in Fort Dodge where Whitey was employed by the U.S. Gypsum Co. In 1955, he began working as an automotive body repairman and in 1974, he established Whitey's Body Shop in Humboldt, which he owned an operated until his retirement in 2002. Mr. Marvin was a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ. He was also a member of the NRA, the Humboldt Rifle and Pistol Club, and the OCRA fishing club. He later attained his Master’s Degree from Northeast Missouri State. Paul was united in marriage to Sandra Bodde on Nov. 28, 1968, at the United Methodist Church in Hampton. He served two years in the U.S. Army. He was a staff sergeant with the combat engineers in Viet Nam. He started his teaching career at the Nashua Elementary School on Dec. 13, 1971, and retired from Nashua-Plainfield Elementary School in 2002. It was truly a labor of love for Paul for even after retiring he substitute taught so he could stay close to his profession and the kids. Paul was an active member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Nashua, St Michael’s Parrish Council, ISEA, NEA, American Legion, VFW and the Mercy Hospital Board. He was a faithful Bulldog and Husky supporter and will be remember for his many years of announcing the home football games. He remained an avid Cubs, White Sox and Bears fan, not completely giving up his Illinois’ roots. He is survived by his wife, Sandra; two sons, Jeff (Tammy) of Peosta and Shawn (Karen) of Ft. He moved to Osage in 1957 where he met Edna Lincke, and the couple was united in marriage on April 11, 1959. The couple lived in Keokuk briefly before settling in Charles City in 1960. He retired from the telephone company in 1984 after 37 years of service. Lyle spent his retirement years dealing in antiques, cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes and spending time with his family. Dale John Stauffer was born Nov. 14, 1920, in Butler County, the son of John and Gesina (Menken) Stauffer. He graduated from the Allison High School in 1937. On June 22, 1941, he was united in marriage to Alice Litterer. They farmed all their lives in the Allison, Greene, Nashua and Charles City areas. Alice died on Jan. 16, 1997. Dale had a dehorning business for many years that served farmers in the surrounding area. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church where he had served on several of the church boards, Farm Bureau, Floyd County Mutual, and Floyd County Soil Conservation. Dale had also served as a 4-H leader. He always enjoyed the family fishing trips to Canada. Dale always took a special interest in children of all ages and will be remembered for helping them in whatever way he could. Living family members include two daughters, Lin (Doug) Sinclair and Vicky (Larry) Sonne both of Charles City; 11 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Lois Stauffer of Allison; a brother, Lyle (Gladys) Stauffer of Greene; a brother-in-law, Ken (Darlene) Litterer of Maquoketa; and many nieces and nephews. Norby was born on the family farm on Jan. 18, 1942, in Rudd, the son Robert and Doris (Kuhlemeier) Norby. Ron was raised on the farm and lived in the Rudd area all his life. He graduated from Rockford High School in 1960 and from Iowa State University in 1965, with an animal science degree. Ron enlisted into the National Guard on November of 1965 and was honorably discharged on Oct. 31, 1971. Ron was united in marriage to Mary Escobedo, on August 24, 1970; to this union three children were born. He was self employed owning his own trucking business. Ron also worked at Kum & Go and the 218 Floyd Express as a cashier. Ron enjoyed sports, fishing, tractors, gardening, woodworking, and loved animals especially his pets! He also liked to spend time with his honorary grandchildren, Ben and Sarah Parcher. He was a member of the Rudd Methodist Church, American Legion, and Lions Club. Phyllis was a longtime employee of Sears in Mason City and a full time helpmate in her husband’s farming operation. She was a member of the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Rockford, TOPS in Nora Springs where she became a KOPS and the Iowa Women’s Bowling Association in Mason City where she was a long time board member and a Hall of Fame member. Phyllis was the Vice President of the Wigwam Camping Group, a Farm Bureau Women’s Representative, 4H and Cub Scout Leader and participated in many different choirs. Her interests included playing yahtzee, bowling, playing cards, gardening, wallpapering, painting and spending time with her grandchildren. He attended school in rural Floyd County and enlisted in the Navy in 1945 and received his honorable discharge in 1947. On May 7, 1949, he was united in marriage to Gloria M. Havig in Austin, Minn. Clete farmed in rural Floyd and Chickasaw Counties before going to work for John Deere Tractor works in Waterloo, retiring in 1978. Clete was a devoted husband, wonderful father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He had many friends who he cherished, and loved playing cards and going for coffee. He always had a hug and a smile for everyone especially the little ones. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends. Kathleen Elizabeth Hugeback was born March 28, 1918, on the Wentz family farm near Ionia, the daughter of George and Elizabeth (Smith) Wentz. She attended Deerfield Country School through the fifth grade, then attended St. Mary’s Grade School in New Hampton for two years and finished elementary education in a rural school. Kathleen then attended New Hampton High School graduating with the class of 1935. Her education continued and in 1940, she became a graduate of the former Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, majoring in Home Economics and minoring in Science and Physical Education. Kathleen began her teaching career in Marble Rock for a year and a half. On July 1, 1941, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Ionia, she married Clayton Hugeback. To this union two daughters were born. The couple farmed near Bassett, where Kathleen was active in 4-H. Kathleen resumed teaching at St. Joseph School in New Hampton from 1966-1970 and then briefly taught in Inglewood, Calif. before moving back to the area. She began by substitute teaching and then became a full time Home Economics teacher at the New Hampton High School retiring in 1983. After retirement she moved her home from the farm into Charles City. During retirement Kathleen enjoyed traveling extensively throughout the world. She was an active volunteer in many organizations including being a ‘Pink Lady’ at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital, doing income taxes for local residents at the Senior Citizens Center and leading the Fountain of Youth Exercises at the YMCA. She was a member of I.C. Church and the St. Francis Circle, Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority, Women’s Club, the Hoe and Hope Club and the Chickasaw and Floyd County Historical Societies. Kathleen was well known for her chocolate chip cookies and afghans, but will be remembered most by her family and friends as a person who spent her life giving. Survivors include one daughter, Shirley, (Arlyn) Kukhan of Charles City; five grandchildren, Michael Shaw of Osage, Deborah (Brett) Kuhlemeier of Rudd, Heidi (Brian) Young of Ionia, Holly (Tony) Fisher of San Antonio, Texas, Ty (Laura) Kukhan of Charles City; 14 grandchildren, Eric Shaw, Alyssa (Zach) Perrin, Elizabeth Shaw, Connor, Collin, Clayton, Cooper and Camden Kuhlemeier, Jordan and Jacob Feltz, Tyler, Trey and Tristan Fisher, and Austin Kukhan. D. Corrinne Smith, 93, of Charles City, died Thursday, Dec.
25, 2008, at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.
Funeral services for Corrinne Smith will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Pastor Gary Van Wert of the Trinity United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens. Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday. Visitation will continue Wednesday an hour prior to the service. Doris Corrinne Smith was born Sept. 2, 1915, in Urbana, the daughter of Clarence and Clara (Davis) Miller. She graduated from Nashua High School in 1933 and attended Iowa State Teachers College where she received her Teaching Certificate. In December of 1941 she was united in marriage to Edward Smith at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Corrinne taught in rural Chickasaw County schools, co-managed Smith Transport Company, established Kae’s Restaurant in Nashua, and worked at Trowbridges and Red Owl. She was a member of the Methodist Church and Charles City Women’s Club. Her interests included crafting butterflies, going on rides with her sister, and visiting with family and friends. Corrinne also looked forward to sharing her life with her family and took every opportunity to do so. Living family members include three children, Douglas “Dean” (Colet) Smith of Quakertown, Pa., Joy (Richard) Smith Martsching of Hot Springs, Ark., and Cheryle L. Smith of Charles City; four grandchildren, Jennifer (Matthew) Crow, Matthew Hults, Shannon (Jeffrey) Miller, and Cole (Kari) Smith; five great grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Delores (Nick) Landry of Concordia, Kans. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband on December 24, 1955; two brothers, Vernon and Chester Miller; and a sister, Evelyn Rausch. A Celebration of Life Mass for Florian R. Rutz, 83, of Greene who died Thursday, Dec. 18, 2008 at the Liebe Care Center in Greene, will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 3, 2009, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greene. Rosary service will be 4 p.m, Friday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. It will be conducted by The Lay Carmelite Community of Charles City. A Scriptural Wake Service will be at 7:30 p.m at the Church. Eugene H. Monroe, formerly of Nashua and Charles City, passed away on Nov. 6, 2008, in Olympia, Wash.
Gene was born in September of 1924 in Bassett, Iowa, the second son of Herbert and Viola (Rausch) Monroe. He was raised in Nashua and Charles City. Instead of graduating with his class in 1943, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He returned to Charles City High School to graduate with the class of 1947. Upon his retirement from the Army in 1965, he moved to Tumwater, Wash. where, among other work, he was an aerospace machinist with Boeing. He received an Associate Degree from Centralia Community College in 1974. He married his beloved wife, Virginia Fohl, in Cedar Grove, Ind. on Oct. 27, 1951. They had five sons, Herb, Mike, Dave, Ray (Karen) and Guy (Pam); one daughter, Rose; and five grandchildren, Amber Tasha, Ocean, Harlie and Merlin — all whom reside in Washington. He is also survived by a step-brother, Roger Bradshaw of Charles City. He was preceded in death by his parents; step-father, Oral Bradshaw; two brothers, Virgil and Merlin; one step-brother, Dale Bradshaw; and three step-sisters, Marjorie Jones, Betty Krogh and Marlys Miller. Keith Roy Darrow, 78, passed away from cancer on Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2008, at Covenant Medical Center. He was born May 7, 1930 in Charles City, the son of Delbert and Vera (Strickler) Darrow. He graduated from Colwell High School, just north of Charles City, with the class of 1948. Keith joined the Charles City National Guard, and was a member from 1948 until 1956. On Dec. 31, 1976, he was united in marriage to Aldyth Bieter Morrow at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. He worked at various jobs such as a tree trimmer and at Ellendale Creamery, but he was a farmer at heart. Keith worked at a farm from 1987 to 1994 just north of Traer. Most recently, he worked at Tysons, just retiring in 2007. Keith was a “fix it” guy who could do anything. He loved his family, farming gardening and his dog Sam.
Keith is preceded in death by his parents; a son, David Darrow; a twin brother Ken Darrow; two sisters, Karen Darrow and Gladys Winters; a step-daughter, Mary Morrow and a sister in-law, Esther Darrow. Keith is survived by his wife Aldyth of Waterloo; two brothers, Dean (Anita) Darrow of Charles City and Paul (Sharon) Darrow of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two sisters, Carol Litterer and Judy (Don) Bluhm, both of Charles City; two step-sons, Richard Morrow and Mark Morrow, both of Helena, Mont.; three step-daughters, Barb Baringer of Indianola, Linda Johnson of Des Moines and Dorothy (Jamie Henderson) Morrow of Des Moines, and many step-grand and step-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
