 LILLIAN MARLETTE

 Lillian J. Marlette, age 86, of Plainfield, Iowa, was born the daughter of Folkert and Minnie (Dralle) Folkerts on June 26, 1914, in Butler County, Bristow, Iowa. She received her education and graduated from the Bristow High School. Lillian Folkerts was united in marriage with Vernon Marlette on October 16, 1934, in Bristow. They lived in Bristow for a short time and in 1938, they moved to a farm near Clarksville. This past April she became a resident at the Community Nursing Home in Clarksville. Lillian was a member of the United Methodist Church in Plainfield and the Senior Citizens Group. She enjoyed watching birds and playing cards and bingo. She enjoyed fellowship with her neighbors and especially spending time with her grandchildren. At 3:40 a.m. Friday, May 25, 2001, Lillian died at the Community Nursing Home in Clarksville, Iowa, of natural causes. She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon in 1971, two sons, Wayne and Virgil Marlette, her parents and one brother, Henry Folkerts. Lillian was survived by 16 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandson; one sister, Edna Bloom of Hampton, IA; two daughters-in-law, Joan Marlette of Plainfield, IA and Marlys Marlette of Waterville, IA; and one sister-in-law, Elsie Folkerts of Clarksville. Funeral Services were held on Tuesday, May 29 at the United Methodist Church at Plainfield with Rev. R. Douglas Tharpe officiating. Organist was Jan Fritcher. Soloist was Roger Miller singing “How Great Thou Art” and “Beyond The Sunset” Honorary Casketbearers wereJay Mehmen and Art Mehmen. Casketbearers were Larry Marlette, Craig Marlette, Mark Marlette, Kevin Marlette, Brian Marlette and Jason Marlette.  Ronald G. Smith

Ronald G. Smith, 54, of Lee Center, Illinois, formerly of Plainfield, passed away Friday, May 25, 2001, at work in Oregon, Illinois, of an apparent heart attack. Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday, May 31, at the Chenoweth and Son Funeral Home in Nashua. Burial will be in Willow Lawn Cemetery at Plainfield. Visitation times are from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 30, and from 9:00 a.m. to service time on Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the family. He is survived by his mother, Margaret Smith of Plainfield; three brothers and their wives: Eugene and Jean Smith of Shell Rock, Darrell and Marilee Smith of Mt. Vernon, Iowa, and Brett Smith of Plainfield. He was preceded in death by his father Glen E. Smith on October 27, 1996. Ronald was born on January 21, 1947, in Waverly to Glen and Margaret (Tegtmeier) Smith. He graduated from Plainfield High School in 1965. He worked for Clay Equipment Co., Shield-Bantam, John Deere Co., and White Farm Equipment Co. After attending N.I.A.C.C., he worked as a self-employed carpenter in Illinois. Robert D. "Butch" Viers

 Funeral services for Robert D. “Butch” Viers, 60, of Greene, formerly of Waterloo, were held at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, June 6, 2001, at Reid’s Funeral Chapel in Greene with burial in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene. Robert Darrell Viers was born November 4, 1940, in rural Coldwater Township, Butler County, a son of Eugene Robert and Ruth (Skillen) Viers, and died Sunday, June 3, 2001, at the Cedar Valley Hospice in Waterloo. He received his education in the Greene Public Schools and was united in marriage to Ruth High on March 4, 1962, in Greene. They lived in Greene where he was employed by the City of Greene as cemetery caretaker. He later moved to Charles City, where he was employed by Riverside Cemetery Association. Butch was employed by John Deere and Wiessman Steel, both in Waterloo and LaPorte Road Memorials before returning to Greene where he was employed as a crane operator for Knock’s Sand and Gravel in Clarskville. Butch will be remembered as one who enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, hunting, and more recently playing golf. He was an avid Green Bay Packers fan. He was associated with the Church of Christ throughout his life. Living family members include two daughters: Nancy Simmons and Lisa Marie Viers, both of Waterloo; one son: Dale Dean Viers of Ft. Madison; grandchildren: Jessica, Holly, Jennifer, Desiree, and Destiny; one great-grandson: Floyd Becker; his parents, Gene and Ruth Viers of Greene; two brothers and their spouses: Jim and Jo Viers of Rockwell City, and Dennis and Judy Viers of Greene. Graveside services for Jenny Lynn Foell, 26, of Clarion, formerly of Greene were held Tuesday, June 5, 2001, at the rose Hill Cemetery with Pastor Ashok Patet of the United Methodist Church officiating. Jenny Lynn Foell was born June 11, 1974, in Waverly, Iowa a daughter of Allen James and Vivian (Matte) Foell, and died Saturday, June 2, 2001, at the USA Health Care Center in Clarion, Iowa, of natural causes. Living family members include her sister Ann Foell of Clear Lake; brother Jim Foell of Eldora; her aunt Arlene Lockwood of Clarion; three uncles: Arvin Foell of Slater, Alvin Foell of Manly, and Richard Roeder of Charles City. RAYMOND F. WAGONER

 Funeral services for Raymond F. Wagoner, 84, of Greene were held Tuesday, June 5, 2001 at the United Methodist Church in Greene with Pastor Ashok Patet Officiating. Burial was in the Hillside Cemetery in Sheffield. Reid’s Funeral Chapel of Greene was in charge of arrangements. Raymond Frederick Wagoner was born January 28, 1917, near Hampton, a son of Paul and Anna (Mutzel) Wagoner, and died peacefully on Saturday, June 2, 2001, with his family at his side at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City. He received his education in the Hampton area graduating from the Hampton High School in 1935. On February 25, 1940, he was united in marriage to Frances Sprung of Sheffield at the Methodist Church in Geneva. They lived in the Meservey and Sheffield area before moving to the Dougherty area where they farmed for 21 years. In October 1965, they moved to their home in Greene where he was employed at McRoberts Implement until his retirement in 1982. In his retirement years he spent his time playing golf. Raymond was a member of the United Methodist Church of Greene were he served on the Board of Trustees, Finance Committee, and was Financial Secretary for many years. He also served on the Rose Hill Cemetery Board in Greene. Those thankful for sharing his life include his loving wife Frances of Greene; his daughter: Marlys and her husband Jerry Petznick of Northwood; two grandchildren and their spouses: April and David Mittag of New London, Missouri, and Jade and Lisa Petznick of Pelican Rapids, Minnesota; three great-grandchildren: Skylar and Mariah Mittag, and Matthew Petznick; two brothers: LeRoy and his wife Sue Wagoner of Charles City and Dallas Wagoner of Hampton; two sisters-in-law: Evelyn Wagoner of Iowa Falls, and Esther Sprung of Sheffield; one brother-in-law: Delbert Sprung of Sheffield; and cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother Russell; and infant sister Lucille, and sister-in-law Barbara Wagoner. SCOTT A. PROSTINE

Scott A. Prostine, 40, of Allison, died peacefully at his home, Sunday afternoon, June 3, 2001 from complications of cancer. Scott was born on February 26, 1961, at Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls, the son of Herluf (Herk) and Loris (Meyer) Prostine. Scott was baptized on March 31, 1985 at the New Hartford United Methodist Church. He attended school in New Hartford, graduating from the New Hartford High School in 1979. He then attended Ellsworth Junior College in Iowa Falls. Scott was united in marriage to his long-time sweetheart Sam Schweer on September 7, 1980, at Roadmans Park in Dike, Iowa. The couple made their home in New Hartford, where Scott was a dairy and crop farmer for 10 years in the New Hartford and Shell Rock areas. On June 29, 1988, Scott went to work for Unverferth Manufacturing Company in Shell Rock where he was the Lead Man in the Powder Coat Unit. Scott was diagnosed with cancer in August of 2000 and took medical leave from his work. Scott’s love for life kept him active in many organizations. As a member of the United Methodist church in Shell Rock, he served as a trustee. On the Swiss Valley Young Cooperative Board, Scott and Sam attended and planned meetings and made lasting friendships. Scott Proudly served as director for the Butler County Fair since 1994. Many loving hours were spent ensuring our youth will have the opportunity to participate in agriculture. Scott truly loved fishing in Canada with ‘our family’, watching NASCAR races, cheering for Awesome Bill from Dawsonville, playing softball for both Butler County League and Billy Jo’s (winning many championships). Most of all Scott loved to be a part of Derek and Kristi’s activities with his wife Sam. Even after this disease touched his life, he was able to make the most of it as only Scott could do. while staying at the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge in Rochester, Scott and Sam met some incredible people and shared many laughs in the midst of such serious illness. You would never had guessed all these folks were so seriously ill. Scott is survived by his wife, Sam of rural Allison; his son, Derek at home, who will be attending I.S.U; his daughter Kristi at home and will be attending U.N.I.; his parents, Herluf and Loris Prostine of Cedar Falls; his brother, Todd Prostine of New Hartford; paternal grandmother, Anna Prostine of Maple Manor Care Center in Aplington and his maternal grandmother, Ora Meyer of Parkview Care Center in Reinbeck. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Laurence Prostine, maternal grandfather, Oscar Meyer, and his uncle Kenny Prostine. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, June 6, 2001 at 10:30 a.m. at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Waverly, with Pastor Realff Ottesen officiating. Memorials may be directed to the family and a memorial fund will be established at a later date. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery in New Hartford with Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly in charge of arrangements.


WAYNE G. DIETZ

Wayne G. Dietz, 66, passed away Tuesday, May 29, 2001 at the Rockwell Community Nursing Home in Rockwell, Iowa. He was born August 3, 1934 in Bremer County, rural Nashua to Alvin and Elenor (White) Dietz. Wayne attended rural schools and graduated from Nashua High School in 1952. He was married to Grace Griswold, and to this union three children were born, Dianna, Carol and David. He was employed by Rockwell Hatchery and later worked on highway construction and eight years with the City of Cedar Rapids. On March 10, 1979 he was united in marriage to Berniece Lolling Nolte at the United Methodist Church in Dumont. They made their home in the Dumont area and he became a member of the United Methodist Church in Aredale. Wayne served as trustee for two terms at the Methodist Church in Aredale. He was sexton at the Dumont Cemetery for several years and the Harlan Cemetery for 11 years until his health failed in 1995, when he was diagnosed with A.L.S., known as Lou Gehrigs Disease. He enjoyed all of nature, fishing, gardening and yard work. Wayne is survived by his wife Berniece Dietz of Aredale; two daughters: Dianna Ogburn of Sherrard, Illinois and Carol Tolley of Willow Springs, Illinois; a son, David Ogburn of Arizona; son-in-law, Dale Hergert of Sherrard, Illinois; stepson, Michael and wife, Carol Nolte of Hampton, Iowa; three sisters: Lucille Dorwin of Cedar Falls, Florence and husband Lewis Hatsky of Cedar Falls, and Shirley Diesburg of Waverly; five brothers: Robert and wife, Darlene Dietz of Hudson, Eldon and wife, Joan Dietz of Tipton, Wendell Dietz of Cedar Falls, Dean and wife, Jean Dietz of Dumont, and Gene Dietz of Nashua; six grandchildren: Brian Tolley, Jermany Hergert, Angela Hergert, Keith Nolte, Matthew Nolte and Cassandra Nolte. Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Kenneth, one sister Kathleen and a sister in infancy. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, June 1, 2001 at the Aredale United Methodist Church with Rev. Wilbert Trusheim and Rev. Robert Connor officiating. Special music was provided by organist, Jim Siebrands accomp-anying soloist, Ross Zimmerman. The ushers were Preston White and Beryl Richard. Those serving on the flower committee were Kathleen White and Nancy Richard. Pallbearers were Dwight Hartzel, Herb Dietz, Ron Hatsky, Allen Dietz, Jerry Dorwin, Shawn Dietz, and Keith Diesburg. Final resting place was in the Dumont Cemetery with Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Dumont in charge of arrangements.


HOWARD BURGESS

 Howard Burgess, 87, a resident of Albuquerque, New Mexico since 1950, passed away on May 18, 2001. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Lavola (West), and daughter Patricia Kerr, both of Albuquerque; granddaughters Jennifer Burita of Alexandria, Virginia, and Julie Sturgeon of Littleton, Colorado; a sister, Margaret Shelgren of Martinez, California; a niece and nephew. A daughter, Suzanne Lewis, preceded him in death. Howard was born on August 10, 1913, in Joplin, Missouri. He moved to Iowa as a child. Professionally, Howard was chief engineer at several radio stations in Iowa. He and Lavola lived in Clarksville prior to moving to Waterloo, then he worked in electronics with United Air Lines in Cheyenne, Wyoming. In 1950 he moved with his wife and children to Albuquerque, working at Sandia National Laboratory until his retirement. Howard had three main interests, electronics, writing, and cartooning. He built the first short-wave radio station in southern Iowa; he published many magazine articles, particularly in the areas of electronics and health; and his most recent cartoon appeared in the Saturday Evening Post last year. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held June 23 in Albuquerque, then his cremains will be interred in Lynwood Cemetery, Clarksville. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Presbyterian Hospice at 8300 Constitution Ave. N.E., Albuquerque, NM 87110.

LAURA HANNAH RAMKER

 Laura Hannah Ramker was born February 22, 1912 in rural Butler County a daughter of Bernard and Hannah (Cronin) Ramker and died Friday, June 8, 2001 at the Liebe Care Center in Greene of complications from a stroke. She received her education in the rural Butler County Schools and later attended the Sacred Heart Academy in Greene for nine years. She graduated from the Greene High School in 1929. After teaching rural schools in Butler County for twelve years, she worked as a cashier for Interstate Power Co. in Greene for two years. While teaching she served as the first president of the Butler County Rural Teachers Assn. organized in 1937 in which she held various offices. On November 22, 1945, she was united in marriage to Raymond Gerhard of Marble Rock at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greene. They lived on a farm in Floyd County for twenty-five years before retiring to their home in Greene. While living near Marble Rock she served as treasurer of the Marble Rock Library Board for ten years and attended St. Mary’s Catholic Church at Roseville and was a member of the Rosary Society there. Laura was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greene, a member of the Ladies Guild, Catholic Daughters of the Americas, and ACCW of the Charles City Deanery, where she served many offices. She was also active in several card clubs, and did volunteer work, where she received the Partners in Aging Award from the State of Iowa in 1993. She served twenty years on the nursing home care committee. In 1998 Laura received the Greene Spirit Award for her outstanding volunteer service. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond in 1977, her parents, and brothers, Louis, William, Floyd “Mike”, Glen, and George Ramker. Living family members include her daughter Lou Ann and her husband Kent Sandburg of Des Moines; her son Don and his wife Barbara Gerhard of Stanley, Kansas; granddaughter Lauri and her husband Steve of Lisbon, Tim of Denver, Colorado, Ken and Caysey of Stanley, Kansas, and four great grandchildren: Taylor, Mitchell, Tanner, and Alicia. A Funeral Mass for Laura H. Gerhard, 89, of Greene was held at 10:30 a.m., Monday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greene with Rev. Msgr. Walter Brunkan officiating. Participants in the Mass were Mary Lou Murphy and Bernita Stanton as Lectors. Altar Servers were Benjamin Gansen and Ashley Adams. Presentation of Gifts was by Jeana Ramker and Kathy Brandow. Special music was provided by organist, Ann Staudt accompanying the soloist, Dennis Staudt as he sang “Just a Closer Walk With Thee”, “Sing Me The Rosary”, “I Believe” and “Let There Be Peace”. Flower attendants were Diane Ramker and Ella Ramker. Ushers were Richard Merfeld and Daniel Downing. Casketbearers were Allyn Ramker, Scott Ramker, Darwin Ramker, Tom Ramker, Duane Ramker and Tom Grimm. Funeral services for Anthony “Tony” Abrahamson, 17, of Northwood will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills with Pastor Doug Domokos of the Word of Faith Dominion Church officiating. Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m., Thursday at Mittelstadt Funeral Home in Lake Mills and again one hour before the service at the church. Tony passed away Sunday, June 10, as the result of a drowning accident. Anthony “Tony” James Abraham-son was born January 6, 1984 in Albert Lea, Minnesota the son of Dorothy (Witte) and Donald Kingland. Tony loved swimming, animals, fishing, tinkering with cars and hanging out with his friends. Tony is survived by his mother, Dorothy Abrahamson of North-wood, Iowa; his father, Donald Kingland of Forest City, Iowa; one brother, Timothy Abrahamson of Northwood; one sister, Veronica and her husband, Darvin Peterson of Joice, Iowa; one nephew, Kyle Peterson; one niece, Christa Peterson; paternal grandmother, Evelyn Kingland of Forest City; two half-sisters, Debbie and Jody in Minnesota; along with several aunts, uncles, cousins, relatives and friends. Tony was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Harvey and Nadean Witte and paternal grandfather, Tildon Kingland. Burial will be at 3:00 p.m., Friday at the Dumont Cemetery. ANN L. BORNEMAN

 Ann L. Borneman, 52, of Dumont died on June 8, 2001 at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center East Campus, Mason City, Iowa from injuries sustained in a car accident. Ann was born the daughter of Arthur and Fern (Ford) Proctor on August 28, 1948 in Hampton, Iowa. She was educated in the Hansell Schools, Hampton High School and Hamilton Business College in Mason City, Iowa. On April 23, 1965, she was united in marriage to Douglas Borneman in Hampton. She worked at the Riverside Book and Bible in Iowa Falls and was a member of the Church of Christ in Hampton. In her sparetime, she enjoyed crocheting and making baby blankets. She loved spending time with her grandchildren. Survivors include her husband, Douglas Borneman of Dumont; daughter: Julie and husband Kris Kramm of Nora Springs, Iowa; her parents Arthur and Fern Proctor of Hampton; a sister, Susan Hungate of Blue Grass, Iowa; mother-in-law Lila Borneman of Dumont; brother-in-law Dale Borneman of Belle Plaine, Minnesota; special friend, Darla Krukow of Dumont and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son David; and father-in-law August Borneman. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, June 11, 2001 at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton with Pastor David Nelson officiating. Special music was provided by organist, Mrs. Eugene Walker accompanying the songs “Safe in The Arms of Jesus” and “What a Friend We Have in Jesus”. Pallbearers were Robert Meyer, Herb Terrill, Tom Craighton, Dan Craighton, Lowell Craighton and David Craighton. Final resting place was in the Dumont Cemetery with Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton in charge of arrangements.


CAROLEE FLYNN

 Carolee Flynn, 65, of Clarksville, died Monday, June 4, 2001, at the Community Nursing Home in Clarksville, from complications of cancer. Carolee was born on June 13, 1935, in Mason City, the daughter of Beryl and Mildred (Amick) Martin. She attended and graduated from the Clarskville High School in 1953. On November 5, 1954, she was united in marriage to Duane Flynn at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. The couple resided in Waverly, where she worked for Lutheran Mutual. In 1961, the couple moved to Moorehead, Minnesota for a short time until returning to Waverly. During this time, Carolee worked at the State Bank of Waverly until 1976. In 1976, the couple moved to Cedar Falls, and she worked at Waterloo Savings Bank and Shakey’s Pizza. In 1994, Carolee and Duane moved to Clarksville, where she had been employed at the Buy-Low Convenience Store. Carolee was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Waverly, where she had served as Worthy Matron. She was a member of Immanuel United Church of Christ in Clarksville. She loved camping, was an avid animal and bird lover, and also enjoyed taping movies with her VCR’s. Carolee is survived by her husband, Duane of Clarksville; one son, Doug Flynn of Nashua; two grandchildren: Melissa Flynn of Spirit Lake, Iowa, and Justin Flynn of Marion, Iowa; and her father, Beryl Martin of Clarksville. She was preceded in death by her mother, Mildred Martin; one brother, James Martin; and a sister in infancy. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 7, 2001, at Immanuel United Church of Christ in Clarksville with Rev. David Walters officiating. Memorials may be directed to the church or to the Cedar Bend Humane Society. Burial was in the Harlington Cemetery in Waverly. Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly was in charge of arrangements.


 

HARLEY DUANE SCHWERDTFEGER

Harley Duane Schwerdtfeger, 73, of Parkersburg, was born August 27, 1927, to Ernest and Dora Henning Schwerdtfeger Patterson in rural New Hartford, Iowa. As an infant, he moved with his family to Parkersburg. He graduated from Parkersburg High School in 1945. Harley served in the U.S. Navy from 1945 to 1947. He took part in “Operation Crossroads” and the atomic test at Bikini Atoll. Harley married Thelma Jean Fleshner, December 28, 1947, at the First Congregational Church, Parkersburg, Iowa. Harley operated a Mobil tank wagon for 25 years and was employed at Beaver Meadows Golf and Country Club from 1978 to the present. He was on the Parkersburg Volunteer Fire Department for 25 years and served as Fire Chief for five years. He was a member of the First Congregational Church, Parkersburg and a lifetime Aplington AMVETS member. He was a member of the Parkersburg American Legion. He most enjoyed his five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. An avid duck hunter, Harley served as a charter Ducks Unlimited Committee member and served in this capacity for many years. Harley was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was always there to help anyone with anything by listening or fixing it if it was broken, except a grandchild’s Slinky. He not only took great pride in his family but also being the Beaver Meadows golf course grounds keeper for many years. Some of Harley’s favorite past times were watching wildlife, hunting, golfing and giving the grandchildren whisker rubs. About 5:30 a.m., Sunday, June 10, 2001, Harley passed away at his home in Parkersburg. He was preceded in death by his mother, Dora Henning Schwerdtfeger Patterson, his father, Ernest Schwerdtfeger and his step-father, Roy Patterson. Harley is survived by his wife, Thelma Jean Schwerdtfeger of Parkersburg; one son, Craig Schwerdtfeger and his wife, Holly of Cedar Falls, Iowa; two daughters, Linda Byrd and her husband, Charlie of Story City, Iowa and Deb Criswell of Cedar Falls, Iowa; a sister, June Harrison of Mt. Vernon, Iowa; and a step-sister, Patty Murphy and her husband, Rex, of Santa Ynez, California; five grandchildren, Betsy Hill and her husband, Nathan, Emily Jensen and her husband, Nathan, Jason Criswell, Kara Sauser and her husband, Michael, and Samantha Criswell; and two great-grandsons, Collin and Conner Hill. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, June 13 at the First Congregational Church in Parkersburg with Pastor Ron Bartlett officiating. Organist was Mary Ann Simon and soloist Steve Williams sang “The Lord’s Prayer,” “If God Didn’t Care,” and “How Great Thou Art.” Honorary casketbearers were Kenneth Palmer, Richard Frey, Leland Husiman, Harvey Peter, Art Collings and Mel Bakker. Casketbearers were Jason Criswell, Michael Sauser, Nathan Jensen, Nathan Hill, Arlyn Hemmen and Kevin Groote. The flower committee was Aggie Card and Irene Stickley. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery at Parkersburg with full military rites by American Legion Post #285 of Parkersburg. Schwartz Funeral Home of Parkersburg was in charge of arrangements.


                      

LEONARD KLINK

 Funeral services for Leonard Klink, 84, of Marble Rock were held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 19, 2001, at the United Methodist Church in Rockford with Pastor Thomas Healey Chaplain, Hospice of North Iowa officiating. Leonard Klink was born Southwest of Rockford, Scott Township, the youngest of thirteen children of Paula and Anna (Quakk) Klink, and died Saturday, June 16, 2001, at the Ninth Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City. As a young boy the family moved to live in the Janesville area for several years where he received part of his schooling and later returning to Rockford area where he finished his schooling and started farming as a young man. He was united in marriage to Edna Mildred Inman on July 13, 1946 at the Rockford United Methodist Church. They farmed East of Rockford, later moving to their present farm West of Marble Rock. He retired from farming in 1990. Leonard was a life long member of the Untied Methodist Church in Rockford. His interests included collecting toy tractors, reading and keeping up on what was new in farming and agriculture, watching westerns on television, and spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. One of his greatest joys was his Alaskan Huskie named Rocket. He will be sadly missed by his two sons: David of Rockford, Alvin and his wife Susan of Marble Rock; five grandchildren: Michael (Vivian) Klink, Shelly Klink, Rhonda (Jeremy) Stephens, Leroy Klink, Edna May Klink; and two great grandchildren: Jeremy Paul Stephens and Jeffrey Donavon Stephens; one sister Nellie Stephens of Oregon and many nieces nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his wife Mildred in 1985; parents; six brothers: Paul, John, Jake, Corney, Crenny, Joseph; the twins Marinus and Marina; three sisters: Jenny, Helen, and Mina and a daughter-in-law, Nancy Hillman Klink. Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Leonard Klink Memorial Fund in care of the family. Special music for the funeral was provided by the congregation singing “Amazing Grace” and “Morning Has Broken” accom-panied by organist, Sharon Hicok, and “Grandpa, Tell Me About the Good Old Days” by the Judds. Flower attendants were Cathy Kruse, Sheila Putney and Carma Hillman. Casketbearers were Leroy Klink, Michael Klink, Jeremy Stephens, Allen Thompson, Adam Parks and Gary Schmidt. Honorary Casket-bearers were Larry Klink, Dale Klink, Charles Marzen and Doug Teeple. Interment was in the Riverside Cemetery in Rockford with Reid’s Funeral Chapel in Marble Rock in charge of arrangements.


DAN HENNING

 Dan Henning, 52, died Monday, May 21, 2001, of natural causes, at his home outside Springhill, Louisiana. Born October 7, 1948, he was the son of Verland and Blanche Henning. He lived in Clarksville all his life until moving to Lake City, Minnesota in 1965, where he graduated from high school in 1966. He served in the U.S. Army 196th Light Infantry in Vietnam from 1967-69. Twice wounded during his tour of duty, he was a recipient of the Purple Heart. He is survived by a son, Jesse; two brothers, Bill Henning and George Bebee and four sisters, Barbara Renning, Kathy Young, Lucy Mark and Caroline Kennedy. He was preceded in death by his parents. He was buried May 25, in Springhill.


ELVERA EMMA HENNING

Elvera Emma (Griner) Henning, age 83, of Clarksville, Iowa, was born the daughter of Ernest and Emma Lynn Griner July 1, 1917, in Butler County, Iowa, near Dumont. The family lived near Dumont and she graduated from Dumont High School. Elvera married George Henning December 13, 1936 in her parent’s home near Dumont, Iowa. The couple farmed in Butler and Bremer Counties and in 1948, bought their farm west of Clarksville. In 1963, they moved about a half-mile north to a second farm and lived there until they moved to town in 1991. March 26, 1997, Elvera became a resident of Shell Rock Care Center and on October 1, 1997, she moved to Country View Care Facility in Waterloo. She was a member of Immanuel United Church of Christ in Clarksville where she was a member of the Women’s Fellowship, having served as the group’s President. Elvera enjoyed gardening, cooking and baking. She especially loved visits from her family and grandkids and would often make them homemade cinnamon rolls and other goodies. She also enjoyed travelling to Arizona and Colorado with her family and attending the Cattle Congress in Waterloo. At 4:25 a.m., Wednesday, June 13, 2001, Elvera passed away at Country View Care Facility, Waterloo, Iowa, of natural causes. She was preceded in death by her great-grandson, Michael Darrah, a step-great-grandson, John Darrah, her parents and a brother, Wilford Griner. Elvera is survived by her husband, George Henning, of Country View Care Facility, Waterloo, Iowa; two daughters, Ruth Busching and her husband, William of Waverly, Iowa and Frances Dempsey and her husband, Ron, of Norwalk, Iowa; one sister, Mae Miller of Dunkerton, Iowa; one brother, Ernest Griner, Jr. and his wife, Miriam of Dumont, Iowa; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandson. Funeral Services were held on Monday, June 18 at Schwartz Funeral Home in Clarksville with Rev. Rueben Topp officiating. Soloist Cindy Haack sang “In The Garden” and “In This Very Room.” Special Music was “How Great Thou Art.” Casketbearers were grandchildren and Spouses: Susan and Steve Darrah; Janelle and Dan Lahr; Denise and Pat McCurnin andRod and Karen Dempsey. Interment was in Lynwood Cemetery, Clarksville.
