UHLENHOPP

07/12/01 Thelma Mae Uhlenhopp, age 91, of Clarksville, Iowa, was born the daughter of Benjamin and Emma (Wickham) DeVore on September 1, 1909, Dumont, Iowa. She graduated from the Dumont High School as Valedictorian in 1928, where she enjoyed playing basketball. On January 6, 1929, Thelma DeVore was united in marriage with Eli J. Uhlenhopp at her parent’s home in Dumont. Following their marriage they lived in Bristow, the Hitesville area north of Aplington and in Clarksville. She assisted her husband with farming and their livestock business. Thelma was a loving wife, mother and homemaker. She also found time to sell Avon, which she enjoyed for over 26 years and retired in 1982. Thelma was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church in Clarksville. She enjoyed gardening, canning, baking cookies and pies and sewing quilts. Thelma would like to stop by and visit with the shut-ins whenever she could. She took great pleasure whenever she would earn an award from selling Avon. In 1997, Thelma moved to the Retirement Village in Clarksville and later she became a resident of the Community Nursing Home in Clarksville on November 10, 1997. At 9:46 p.m. Thursday, July 5, 2001, Thelma died at the Community Nursing Home of natural causes. She was preceded in death by her husband, Eli Uhlenhopp on March 16, 1986, two grandchildren, Cynthia Kubicek and Tara Adelmund, one great grandson, Nickolas O’Brien, one step-great granddaughter, Jodi Happel, a son-in-law, Raymond Wust, and three brothers, Kenneth, Ralph and Cecil DeVore. Thelma is survived by: three sons, Galvin D. Uhlenhopp and his wife, Mary Jeanne of Kasson, MN, Wendell G. Uhlenhopp and his wife, Myrna of Clarksville, IA, and Darwin K. Uhlenhopp and his wife, April of Clarksville, IA; three daughters, Eileen Wust of Allison, IA, Beverly Kubicek and her husband, Mel of Denver, IA, and Judy Adelmund and her husband, Alvin of Clarksville, IA; 21 grandchildren; 46 great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and five step-great grandchildren. Funeral Services were held on Monday, July 9, at St. John Lutheran Church, Clarksville with Rev. Norm Omodt officiating Organist was Lois Roose; Soloist was Becky Jaeger with accompanistPam Avaux. Casketbearers were Mike Wust, Mark Wust, David Kubicek, Lance Adelmund, Dennis Uhlenhopp and Darren Uhlenhopp. Interment was in Lynwood Cemetery at Clarksville with Schwartz Funeral Home of Clarksville in charge of arrangements.


BOEKHOFF

07/12/01 Ernest Henry Boekhoff, age 81, of Aplington, Iowa, was born the son of John and Mary Vanderwerf Boekhoff on January 29, 1920, in Mayhew Lake, Minnesota. As a child Ernest moved with his family to Iowa and attended Colfax-4 country school in rural Wellsburg, Iowa. Ernest served in the United States Army during World War II, where he was a prisoner of war. His bravery earned him his most prized possessions: four Bronze Star medals and one Silver Star for surviving five major battles, and the coveted Purple Heart. On January 31, 1947, Ernest was united in marriage with Ruth Boelts at the West Friesland Presbyterian Church, rural Ackley, Iowa. They made their home and farmed in the Wellsburg area until 1958 when they moved to a farm near Aplington. In 1982, Ernest retired from farming and they moved to Aplington. During his retirement, he enjoyed carpentry work and working at Ol’s Gold Seed Corn Company in Aplington during the harvest season. After suffering a stroke in 1992, Ernest resided at the Presbyterian Village in Ackley. Ernest was an active member of the West Friesland Presbyterian Church and a member of the Aplington AMVETS. He enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family and friends. At 9:20 a.m. Tuesday, July 3, 2001, Ernest died at the Presbyterian Village in Ackley of natural causes. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Ruth, who died in 1991, his parents, a sibling who died at birth, six brothers, Ben, Dick, Samuel, John, Albert and Lawrence Boekhoff, and eight sisters, Fannie Johnson, Anna Tjabring, Jennie Van Heiden, Ella Riebkes, Marie “Bertha” Kennegieter, Carrie Wehrman, Lorine Boekhoff and Evelyn “Patti” Lentz. Ernest is survived by two sons and three grandchildren, Mervin Boekhoff and his wife, Kathy, of Iowa Falls and their children Melissa and T.J. and Lynn Boekhoff and his wife, Susan, of Park City, Kansas and his daughter, Jamie; three sisters, Grace Hippen and her husband, Delbert, of Wellsburg, Iowa, Esther Smith and her husband, Dale, of Conrad, Iowa, and Marlys Clark of Keokuk, Iowa; two brothers, George Boekhoff and his wife, Betty, of Wellsburg and Arnold Boekhoff and his wife, Delores, of Wellsburg; and one sister in-law Carrie Boekhoff of Wellsburg. Funeral Services were held on Friday, July 6 at West Friesland Presbyterian Church at Ackley, with Rev. Randy Crane officiating. Organist was Stella Neymeyer; Soloist was Tako Ubben Casketbearers were Todd Boekhoff, Darwin Boelts, Ron Lentz, Leon Boelts, Roger VanHeiden and Ron Boelts Interment was in West Friesland Cemetery at Ackley, Iowa With Full Military Rites Conducted by the Aplington AMVETS Post #102 Schwartz Funeral Chapel ofAplington was in charge of arrangements.


SCHMITZ

Parker H. Schmitz, 72, of Urbandale, Iowa died on July 7, 2001 at his home from cancer. Parker was born June 27, 1929 in Eldora and grew up in the Eldora area and lived in Des Moines after college where he worked for Central National Bank. In 1951 moved to Allison and was President of the Allison State Bank and later worked as the Butler County Auditor. He and his wife moved back to Urbandale and lived there for the past 14 years. He sold banking machines for what is now Data Business Machine Company. He was a member of the Allison United Church of Christ and a Mason and Schriner while in Allison. He was also a member of the Eastern Star Service and a treasurer of the Butler County Fair Board for ten years. For the past year he had worked for Cimmirron Transportation Company, which transported Union Pacific RR staff from station to station. He is survived by his wife Nellie Schmitz of Urbandale; two daughters: Debra Hummel of Allison and Diane Braatz of Bond, Colorado; grandchildren: Amy Siemens and Megan Seehusen, both of Allison; Gregory Hummel of North Liberty; Benjamin Braatz, Shelby Braatz, and Zachary Braatz of Bond, Colorado; great-grandchildren: Kenzie and Kayla Siemens of Allison and Parker Seehusen of Allison. Memorial service will be Tuesday, July 10, 2001 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Church of Christ in Allison. Cremation burial will be at a later date.
