Grace Modderman

Grace K. Modderman,
100, of Alexander, died on Saturday, May 1, 2004, at the Belmond Health
Care Center.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, May 5, at the First
Reformed Church in Alexander.
Grace Dirksen was born on December 7, 1903 at Alexander, the daughter of
Dirk Dirksen and Yetti Pals. She graduated from the
Alexander Consolidated Schools.
On
February 19, 1929, she married Eilert Modderman and
they farmed in the area until retirement. Grace
entered the Belmond Care Center in 1998.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband;
brother, Jelto Dirksen; and sister, Clara Lauritzen.
Grace
is survived by her sister, Jennie DeWaard of Kanawha; and
brothers, Louis Dirksen of New Hampton and Dirk
(Grace) Dirksen of Alexander.

Thora Trees
May 18, 2004
Thora Trees, 99, died on Thursday, May 13, 2004.
Funeral services
were held on Saturday, May 15, at the Belmond United Methodist
Church, with Rev. Michael Druhl officiating. Interment
was in the Belmond Cemetery.
Organist was Lyn Courson and soloist was Sue Nelson. Casket bearers were
Al Charlson, Joe McLaughlin, Al Rodriguez, Al
Mattison, Jim Chelesvig and Vern Gordon.
Thora Carpenter was born on February 16, 1905 north of Goodell, the daughter
of Alfred C. and Lydia J. (Smith) Carpenter. She
attended country school through the 8th grade and
graduated from the Goodell High School in 1923. She
returned home to the farm for a short period of time.
On
August 26, 1924, she married James F. Trees at the
Belmond Methodist Church.
Thora
was a life long homemaker. She was a member of the
United Methodist Church for nearly 75 years and had
been active in the UMW, Rebecca and Goodwill Circles
and the Belmond Senior Citizens.
Thora
and Jim spent many winters in Florida. After Jim's
death in 1983, she moved to the Belmond Community
Apartments where she lived for 18 years. She became a
resident of the Belmond Health Care Center in June
2001.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband;
brothers, Harry, Lloyd and Alfred and their wives;
sister, Thelma Schlichting and her husband; and
daughters-in-law, Beverly and Jane.
Survivors are her daughter, Cleo (Richard) Frank of
Gig Harbor, Washington; son, Bill Trees of Wauna,
Washington; brother, Richard (Carole) Carpenter of
Shelter Cove, California; eight grandchildren; 12
great-grandchildren; and two
great-great-grandchildren.

Ida Smit
May 25, 2004
Ida Smit, 94, died
on Sunday, May 16, 2004. Funeral services were held
on Wednesday,
May 19, at the First Reformed Church in Meservey, with
Rev. Rodney Meester officiating. Interment was in the
Meservey Cemetery.
Music was provided by Janet Pals, organist and Terry Long, soloist.
Ushers were Roger Fekkers and Fred Suntken. Honorary
bearers were Chris Seitsema, Paula Jenison, Renee
Schaefer, Kathy Nierengarten, Karla Rooney, Janet
Larson, Judy Boekelman, Brenda Minton, Lori Hall, Pam
Wonsmos, Cheryl Larson, Kim Smit and Jody Young.
Casket bearers were Arlyn Nedved, Jeff Jenison, Bruce
Smit, David Nedved, Dennis Ritter, Lynn Hayungs, Brian
Hayungs and Mark Jenison.
Ida Koenen, was born
on December 22, 1909, on the family farm
near Alexander, the daughter of Harm and Hermina
(Dirks) Koenen. She attended Alexander Schools. Then
she assisted her father on the farm.
She
married Ben Smit on May 10, 1933. They farmed east of
Meservey where they raised seven children.
Ida
was a life long homemaker and partner in the farm. She
was hard working and always put the needs of her
family and others before her own. She will be
remembered for her wonderful homemade breads and
rolls. Each family member has handcrafted gifts such
as tablecloths, doilies and afghans. People remember
sledding parties in the winter and going to Ida's home
for homemade goodies, hot cocoa and oyster stew,
followed by sing-alongs.
Ida
enjoyed reading and was an avid gardener, which she
continued well into her late 80's. She and Ben visited
Germany. They also enjoyed fishing trips to the north
country. She was a life long member of the First
Reformed Church in Meservey. In 2002 she became a
resident of the Belmond Care Center.
Ida
was preceded in death by her parents; husband (1973);
sons, Harlan (2003) and Edward (1997); sons-in-law,
Elmer Nedved, Ernie Hayungs and Merrill Jenison;
sisters, Tillie Koenen and Hermina Foss; and brother,
Herman Koenen.
Survivors are her daughters, Betty Nedved of
Hayfield, Ione Hayungs of Clear Lake and Lois Jenison
of Belmond; son, Alvin (Jackie) Smit of Thornton;
daughter, JoAnn (Mike) Ritter of Goodell;
daughters-in-law, Joanne (Harlan) Smit and Georgia
(Edward) Smit, both of Sheffield; sister, Tina Smit of
Sheffield; 21 grandchildren; and 40
great-grandchildren.

Wanda Finn

Wanda L. Finn, 60, of Kenosha, Wisconsin, died
on Wednesday,
May 19, 2004, at her residence.
A memorial services was
held at Kenosha, and funeral services will be held at
the Goodell United Methodist Church on Saturday, May
29, at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be in the Amsterdam
Cemetery near Goodell.
Wanda Mason, was born on January 8, 1944 in Belmond, the daughter of Francis
and Opal (Lein) Mason. She was a 1962 graduate of the
Belmond High School. She then attended LaJames Beauty
School. In 1980 she moved to Kenosha.
For
many years she was employed with, and volunteered for,
the Kenosha Achievement Center. She enjoyed crafts,
sewing, cooking, ceramics, planning family events and
volunteering.
She
was preceded in death by her step-father, Ed Peterson
(1988); and brother, Walter Mason (1965).
Survivors include her sons, Brian (Kathleen) Finn of
Paddock Lake, Wisconsin, Todd (Shannon) Finn and Terry
(Lisa) Finn, both of Kenosha; daughter, Michelle Finn
of Oak Creek, Wisconsin; brother, Wayne (Mary Ellen)
of
Goodell; sisters, Leola (Verdell) Lunning of Forest
City, Annette Boelman of Goodell and Marilyn (Terry)
Hallcran of Mason City; and three grandchildren.

Sue Denger

E. Sue Denger, 67,
of
Wichita, Kansas, formerly of Dows, died on Friday, May 21, 2004.
Funeral services were held on Monday, June 7, at the Dows United Methodist
Church, with inurnment in the Fairview Cemetery in Dows.
She was born on July 12, 1936, the daughter of Ray I. and Elsie M. Brighton Denger. She graduated from
the Dows High School in 1953,
Broadlawns School of Nursing in 1956, earned a BS from
the University of Iowa in 1966, and an MA in 1968. She
worked in six states and taught at several
universities. She traveled around the world consulting
and teaching.
She
was preceded in death by her father; and brother, Dan.
Survivors are her mother of Dows; and sister-in-law,
Mary Ann Denger of Dows.

Orville Kropp
June 1, 2004
Orville A. Kropp, 87, died
on Monday, May 24, 2004, at the Concord
Care Center in Garner.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, May 27, at
the Klemme United Methodist Church.
Orville was born on December 9, 1916, the son of August and Rosa Bredlow
Kropp. He attended the Liberty School #2 and Liberty
Methodist Church west of Klemme. He graduated from the
Garner High School in 1934. He served in the Pacific
during WW II. He farmed with his brother, Lester for
many years.
Orville was preceded in death by his parents;
sisters, Relma Finn and Neva Hartzell; and brothers,
Gilbert and Caris.
Survivors include his sisters, Lucille Drugg of
Forest City, Hilda Bell, Viola Kropp and brother,
Lester, all of Garner.

Lillian Schlei
June 1, 2004
Lillian L. Schlei, 81,
of Garner, died on Wednesday, May 26, 2004, at the Muse Norris
Hospice in Mason City.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 29, at
the Immanuel Reformed United Church of Christ in
Klemme.
Lillian Louise, was born on July 17, 1922 on a farm near Thornton, the
daughter of Axel and Katherine Petersen Juhl. She
graduated from the Ventura High School in 1940.
She
married Dale Schlei in 1943 in Clear Lake. They farmed
southwest of Klemme for many years. She lived at the
Prairie View Apartments in Garner the past 18 years.
Lillian was preceded in death by her parents;
husband (1975); sisters, Elnora, Laura and Elsie; and
brothers, Albert, Elmer, Leonard and Arthur.
She
is survived by her daughter, Cheryl (Dan) Farris of
Garner; grandchildren, Tracy (Frank) Marshall of
Klemme, Craig (Linda) Meints of Klemme and Cody
Farris of Garner; step-grandchildren, Anna and Amy Skogerboe of Klemme; and sister, Alice Thompson of
Washington.

Dean Murrell
June 1, 2004
Dean R. Murrell, 51,
of Mason City, died on Saturday, May 29, 2004, at
his home.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 3, at 11:00
a.m., at the Church of Christ, Mason
City, with Rev. Alan Sheldon officiating. Interment
will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, where
military honors will be conducted. Visitation will be
held on
Wednesday from 4-8:00 p.m., at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Chapel,
Mason City.
Dean was born on June 6, 1952 in Nevada, the son of Edson and Hazel
(Haukoos) Murrell. He graduated from the NESCO High School
in 1970 and then attended the Des Moines Area
Community College in Ankeny. In 1970 he joined the
Iowa National Guard and was a member of the Boone
unit. He later became a full time mechanic for the
unit, and in the early 80's transferred to the 1133rd as a
mechanic. He served during Desert Storm and retired
after 23 years.
Dean
married Vicki Zeigler on March 15, 1983. Following his
retirement from the Guard he obtained his education
degree at the University of Northern Iowa. He taught
industrial technology for the past three years at the
Belmond-Klemme High School.
Dean
enjoyed carpenter work, building, and fixing things at
his church. He was known for the grin on his face and
his contagious laugh. He was a member of the Church of
Christ, Mason City.
He
was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his children, Michael and Melissa
Murrell of Mason City; former wife, Vicki Murrell of
Mason City; brother and sisters, Mildred (Bud) Ely of
Ames, Roger (Donna) Murrell of Unionville, Missouri,
Judy (Stan) Vigness of McCallsburg, Marcia (Norm)
Berrett of Kelley, Jerry Murrell of Zearing and Deb
Greene and her friend, Roger Uglem of Plymouth,
Minnesota.

Vernon Weld
June 8, 2004
Vernon T. C. Weld, died
on Saturday,
May 29, 2004, at his home in Salem, Oregon.
Funeral services
were held on Friday, June 4, at the Salem First Baptist Church.
Burial, with military honors, was in the Willamette National
Cemetery in Portland.
Vernon was born on November 3, 1916, to Tim and Flossie Weld, long time
residents of Clarion. He graduated from the Belmond
High School.
He married Elsie Anderson in 1934. Vernon
was a farmer, attended Iowa State College and was a WW
II veteran. In 1951 he moved his family to Oregon.
He
was preceded in death by his son, Ronald.
Survivors include his wife; son, Roger; daughter, Verdeen; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and
3 great-great-grandchildren.

Robert Krukow

Robert Gene Krukow,
66, of Dows, died on Sunday, May 30, 2004, at the hospital in
Clarion.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, June 3, with interment
in
the Fairview Cemetery in Dows.
Robert was born on June 18, 1937, the son of Harold and Mildred Varrellmann
Krukow. He grew up in Franklin County and graduated
from the Alexander High School in 1954. He married
Audrey White in Rock Island in 1973. He was a truck
driver for several companies and retired in 2002.
He
was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife; daughters, Lana and
Wendy of Dows; granddaughter, Alexa; and brother,
Ronald (Roberta) of Dows.
