Bernice Nelson

Bernice L. Nelson, 81, died
on Tuesday, June 1,
2004.
Funeral services were held on Friday, June 4, at the St. Olaf
Lutheran Church near Belmond, Rev. Lowell Halvorson
officiating with interment in the Belmond Cemetery.
Music was provided by organist, Carol Severson and soloist, Dustin
Nelson. Ushers were Cliff Olson and Alfred Johnson.
Casket bearers were Dave Nelson, Neal Nelson, Steve
Wagner, Dennis Nelson, Jim Nelson and Craig Wagner.
Bernice, the
daughter of Elling and Nettie (Ulstad) Ellingston, was
born on April 18, 1923, on her parents farm west of
Belmond, the fourth of seven children. She was
baptized in 1923 and confirmed in 1938 at the St. Olaf
Lutheran Church. She graduated from the Belmond High
School and Mason City Junior College. Bernice
completed her BS degree at Drake University.
She taught for 32
years at the fifth/sixth grade levels in rural schools
and at Kanawha and Clarion. Most of her teaching was
in the area of Spanish and Social Studies. She was
also a life long homemaker.
Bernice married
Robert V. Nelson on April 25, 1942 at the Lutheran
Parsonage in Belmond.
Bernice had been
actively involved in serving her churches, Trinity
Lutheran Church in Belmond where she taught Sunday
School and Bible School and served on the Board of
Education, and later at St. Olaf where she was active
in Bible study groups.
Bernice was very
much a family person who received great joy from the
accomplishments of her family. She raised a garden and
flowers, did sewing, was an avid reader, and enjoyed
the companionship of her dogs.
She was preceded
in death by her parents; infant son, Mark Alan;
sisters, Maxine Michaelson and Virgil Bailey; nephew,
Charles Christensen; and niece, Debbie (Ellingston)
Obrecht.
Survivors include
her husband of Belmond; son, Robert (Charlene) Nelson
of Belmond; granddaughter, Marietta (Brad) Bittle and
their children, Ian Bradford, Maeve Catherine and
Caroline Joy of Monterey, California; grandson,
Matthew (Christina) Nelson and their children, Aaron
Robert, Marcus Michael and Abigail Lorraine of
Belmond; brother-in-law, Keith Bailey of Tacoma,
Washington; sisters, Eunice (Lloyd) Christensen and
Avis Hopkey of Belmond; and brothers, Leo (Opal)
Ellingston and Ray (Rebecca) Ellingston of Belmond.

Sanford Sammy
Severson
June 8, 2004
Sanford "Sammy" G. Severson, 91,
died on Wednesday, June 2, 2004, at the Belmond Medical Center.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, June 5, at the St. Olaf Lutheran
Church near Belmond, Rev. Lowell Halvorson officiating
with interment in the Belmond Cemetery.
Music was provided by organist, Carol Severson and the St. Olaf Men's
Choir accompanied by Ellie Nelson. Ushers were
Clifford Toft and Alfred Johnson. Casket bearers were
Scott Severson, David Christenson, Sid Severson, Herb
B. Brand, John Haugen and Elon Dahley.
Sanford Severson
was born in Humboldt County on January 9, 1913, the
son of Knut and Alma (Gunderson) Severson. He was
baptized in the Samuel Lutheran Church in Eagle Grove.
When he was six
years old he moved with his parents to the
Belmond/Clarion area and attended the Belmond Rural School
No. 9. He was confirmed at St. Olaf Lutheran and was a
life time member there.
On December 31,
1935, he married Lillian Haugen at Northwood. They
farmed in the Belmond/Clarion area until their
retirement in 1976 when they moved into Belmond.
Sanford was a
director of Belmond No. 9 School and had served as a
deacon and trustee of St. Olaf. He had been involved
with the Luther League, served as an usher at church
and filled various other roles. He served on the
Belmond Community Apartments Board and was
instrumental in organizing the Over 60 Club. He was a
Care Car Driver, delivered Meals on Wheels, and served
on the Belmond Creamery Board.
Sanford and
Lillian enjoyed card parties and dancing at the Surf
Ballroom in earlier years. Sammy was a devoted care
giver to his wife during her failing health.
He looked forward
to a competitive game of cards with grandson, Scott
and coffeeing with his friends. He loved the farm and
helped his son up to the time of his illness.
Preceding him in
death were his parents; his wife in 2003; and sisters,
Myrtle, Leila and Betty.
Survivors are his
son, Larry (Carol) Severson of Belmond; grandson,
Scott Severson and his fiancée, Missy Jeffers of
Belmond; sisters, Kathryn Christenson of Belmond and
Elaine Lenz of Mason City; and brother, Kenneth P.
Severson of Clarion.

Henry Steenblock
June 8, 2004
Henry A. Steenblock, Jr., 91,
formerly of Belmond, died on Friday, June 4, 2004, at
the Collinwood
Elder Care Center in Orfordville, Wisconsin.
Funeral services were held on Monday, June 7, at the United Church of Christ
Congregational in Belmond, Rev. Lynne Spencer-Smith
officiating with interment in the Belmond Cemetery.
Organist was Carol
Severson. Ushers were Lynn Sorum and George Hinman.
Casket bearers were Bud Boelman, Greg Johnson, Harold
Ainger, Robert Kalkwarf, Ralph Turner and Frank
Pollitt.
Henry was born on
August 3, 1912, on a farm in the Ventura area, the son
of Henry A. Steenblock, Sr. and Ada (Woodfull)
Steenblock. He attended country school through the
eighth grade and went to work on the family farm.
He worked with his
father tiling farms in the Belmond/ Klemme area. He
later worked as a finish carpenter for Ted Zook in
Belmond and was also in partnership with his brother
in a mink ranch. He married Blanche Sharp on November
19, 1939.
He was unable to
enlist in the service during World War II due to
visual impairment. However, he worked on government
highway projects such as the Alaskan Highway.
Henry and Blanche
were avid golfers. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, and
later in life became interested in making jewelry from
rocks and gemstones he received from all over the
world. He passed many hours playing cards with Louie
and Frances Mennenga and Louis Larson.
Preceding him in
death were his parents; his wife in 1986; his half
sister, Lavene; and his brother, Murland.
Survivors are his
son, David (Marsha) Steenblock; and granddaughters,
Erin and Sarah of Janesville, Wisconsin.

Amelia Howard

Amelia Caroline Howard, 92, died
on Sunday,
June 6, 2004, at the Franklin General Hospital in
Hampton.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, June 10, at the Morgan
United Methodist Church in Dows.
Amelia was born on May 4, 1912, to Albert and Emma Lottmann Fink in Gerold,
Missouri. She married Charles Howard on February 18,
1931 at Webster City. They lived in Webster City and
Dows.
She was preceded
in death by her parents; husband, Charles in 1978;
sister, Evelyn; and brothers, Henry, Harold, Howard,
Richard and Robert.
Survivors are her
children, Mabel Lambertsen of Hampton, Donald (Shelly)
Howard of Dows, Homer (Linda) Howard of Dows, Linda
(Gary) Sheridan of Cannon Falls, Minnesota and Mary
Howard of Dows; sisters, Delores Crawford of Iowa
Falls and Dorothy Eriksen of Dows; and brother, George
Fink.

Kenneth Johnson

Kenneth Johnson, 71,
of
Meservey, died on Tuesday, June 8, 2004, at the Iowa Veterans Home
in Marshalltown.
A memorial service with military
rites was held on Tuesday, June 29, at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home in
Belmond.
Kenneth Ardell, the son of Cornelius and Grace Boelman Johnson, was born
on March 15, 1930 in Goodell. He served as a medic with
the U.S. Army in the Korean War.
He
was preceded in death by his father.
He is
survived by his son, Dennis of Seattle; and his mother of
Belmond.

Carroll Hensel

Carroll Hensel, 84, of Stockton,
Illinois, (formerly Alexander), died on Sunday, June 13, at the
hospital in Freeport, Illinois.
Funeral services will be held on
Thursday, June 17, at 11:00 a.m., at the Tenold Andrews
Funeral Home in Belmond, with visitation one hour
prior to the services.

Marjorie Miller

Marjorie Miller, 74,
of
Britt, died on Sunday, June 13, 2004, at the Belmond Health Care
Center.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, June 17, at the Dugger-Ewing
Funeral Home in Belmond, with interment in the Belmond
Cemetery.
Marjorie Ruth, the daughter of Palmer and Mary Johnson Branstad, was born
on November 5, 1929 in Forest City. She grew up near
Leland. Marjorie married John "Frank" Miller. They
made their home in Hayfield.
Marjorie had been living at the Westview Care Center
in Britt and recently moved to the Belmond Health Care
Center.
She
was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sons,
Leslie and Johnny; two brothers; and two sisters.
Marjorie is survived by
her daughter, Mary (Robert) Lugo
of Windom; sons, Leroy (Penny) of Hampton and Ed
(Bobbi) of Belmond; and brother, Marvin of Colorado.

Helen Brown
June 22, 2004
Helen Brown, 76, of Belmond, formerly of Fergus
Falls, Minnesota, died on Monday, June 14, 2004, at the Belmond
Medical Center.
Funeral services were held on Friday, June 18, at
the Olson Funeral Home, Fergus Falls, with Reverend
Mark Donald officiating. Burial was in the Swan Lake
Lutheran Cemetery, rural Fergus Falls. A memorial
service was held on Sunday, June 20, at the Leinbach Center in
Belmond.
Helen was born on October 30, 1927, to Emil and Aagot (Nelson) Berg in Fergus
Falls. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran
faith. She graduated from the Fergus Falls High School in
1945.
She
married Marvin Brown on December 25, 1945. They lived
in Alexandria, Bethel and Cambridge, Minnesota. After
her children were all in school, Helen became a
Certified Surgical Technician at Memorial Hospital and
continued that career for fifteen years.
In 1982 they
retired and they enjoyed 10 years in Mesa, Arizona and
the North Shore. In 1990 they bought a cabin on Wall
Lake. After Marvin died in 1991, Helen continued to
spend her winters in Mesa and summers at the lake
until 2001. Due to health problems, she moved to
Belmond to be near two of her daughters.
She
enjoyed photography, crafts, oil painting,
volunteering, traveling and living at the Belmond
Community Apartments. She was a member of the Trinity
Lutheran Church in Belmond and a Round Robin group
that stayed in touch by letters since her school days.
She
was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son,
Rod; grandson, Joey Gnerre; and sisters, Eleanor
Peltier and Mildred Nokleby.
Survivors include her sons, Dan (Cindy) Brown of
Phoenix, Arizona and Russell (Belinda) Brown of
Spokane, Washington; daughters, Becky (Jim) Janssen
and Candy (Max) Christie both of Meservey and Carrie
(Steve) Gnerre of Naples, Florida; daughter-in-law,
Andrea Lambert of Maryville, Tennessee; grandchildren,
Michele Brown, Stephanie Barnard, Cory Kuester, Kyle
Christie, Kelly Janssen, Benjamin Brown, Nick Brown,
Caleb Brown, Rhianna Brown and Tyler Gnerre;
great-grandchildren, Emma and Devon Brown and Jericho
Clark; nieces, Sylvia Leabo, Karen Peterson and Sonyia
Oehler; and special friend, Maynard Gundberg of Fergus
Falls.

David Barry
June 22, 2004
David George Barry,
83, of Merion Station, Pennsylvania, died on Thursday, February 5,
2004. His wife Rosalyn died about a month later.
David was born on a farm near Belmond, the son of George and Molly
(Sullivan) Barry. He graduated from the Belmond High
School in 1939. He taught biology and science in many
states and wrote several text books.
Survivors include his children Chris, Brian, Janice and
Barbara.

Freda Lein

Freda J. Lein, 78,
of
Belmond, died on Wednesday, June 16, 2004, at the Mercy Medical Center of
North Iowa, Mason City.
Funeral services were held on Friday, June 18, at
the Peace Reformed Church south of Garner, with
burial in the church cemetery.
Freda, the daughter of Reinhard and Katherine Burma
Van Gerpen, was born on January 25, 1926 in Buffalo
Center. She attended schools in Buffalo Center and
graduated from the Alexander High School.
Freda
married Arlon M. Lein on May 25, 1946 in Clarion. They
made their home in Belmond and Klemme where they
raised three children. She owned and operated her own
beauty shop.
She
was preceded in death by her parents; husband;
brothers, Jasper (Bud) and Russell; and a
daughter-in-law, Nancy.
Freda
is survived by her sons, Lowell (Nancy) of Cedar Rapids
and David (Ardith) of Sioux Center; daughter, Susan
(David) Wehling of Burnsville, Minnesota; special
friend, Herman Boelman; sister, June (Allyn)
Christensen of Clarion; brothers, Don (Gervaise)

St. Peter, Minnesota, died on Friday, June 25, 2004, in Mankato. A
graveside service was held on Sunday, June 27, at the Belmond
Cemetery.
Marilyn Marie, was born on December 21, 1949 in Forest City. She married
William Aarons in 1972.
She
was preceded in death by her father, Carol Brager; and
grandson, Alexander Aarons.
She
is survived by her mother, Mildred Brager of Belmond;
son, Jason (Angela) Aarons; and grandson, Mitchell of
Florida; brother, Daryl (Roxanne) Brager of Eagle
Grove; and sister, Meridee (Cliff) Swart of Belmond.
