Ethel Ketchum

Funeral services for
Ethel Mae (McDonald) Ketchum, 94, were held on Friday, July 2, 2004, at the United
Methodist Church in Belmond. Rev. Michael Druhl officiated. Burial was
in the Graceland Cemetery, Rowan.
Music was provided by Dona Cleveland, organist and Inez Ketchum, soloist.
Ushers were Mick Ketchum and Dan Ketchum. Casket bearers were her grand
and great-grandchildren, Kathy Ketchum, Scott Ketchum, Charles Vestweber, Tim Vestweber, Travis Delzell, Dennis Vestweber, Sue Delzell,
Joe Delzell and Danielle Delzell.
Honorary bearers were
Cory Ketchum, Barbara Pike, Pat Crafton, Linda Williams, Anna Lee Stone,
Richard Ketchum, Bern Ketchum, Branden Vestweber, Doris Pepin, Lola
Robinson, Renee Ketchum, Linda Nickerson, Robert Ketchum, Lionel
McDonald, Nick Ketchum, Joan Regan, Ellen Sturges, Robin Ketchum, Del
Shinneman, Sidney Ketchum and Gene Ketchum.
Ethel McDonald was born on
February 6, 1910 in Cavalier County, North Dakota, the daughter of James
Allen and Mabel (Woodrow) McDonald. She attended school in Sarles, North
Dakota, where she graduated in 1928. Ethel attended teachers college in
Valley City and taught in rural North Dakota for two years.
Ethel married Jack E.
Ketchum of Rowan on October 15, 1931. They farmed and raised their
family in Grant Township near Belmond until 1969, when they retired and
moved into town.
Ethel was a life long
homemaker and a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and
friend. She and Jack enjoyed traveling throughout the county and
wintered in Arizona for several years.
Ethel was a member of
the United Methodist Church in Belmond and the UMCW. For many years she
was involved with the Rebekah Lodge and had served in various offices.
Preceding her in death
were her parents; husband; infant son, Herbert Allen; sister, Evelyn;
and brothers, Raymond (Bud) and Ward.
Survivors include her son,
Ronald L. (Marlys) Ketchum of Central Point, Oregon; daughter, Mary
Jane (Garold) Vestweber of Belmond; six grandchildren; and six
great-grandchildren.

Glee Belle Mennenga

Glee Belle Mennenga,
81, died on Saturday, July 3, 2004, at the Belmond Health Care Center.
Funeral services were
held on Wednesday, July 7, at the Immanuel Reformed Church near Belmond, with Rev. Rob Ford
officiating. Interment was in the Alexander Cemetery.
Music was provided by Shirley Kuhlers, organist and Stacia Creason,
recorded music. Honorary casket bearers were Sara Waltzing, Kelli
Showalter, Mary DeCarlo, Katie Studer, Stacia Creason, Jenna Waltzing,
Gina Noftsger, Bob Mennenga and family. Casket bearers were Brian Tisor,
Joe Showalter, Jeff Tisor, Scott Waltzing, Josh Studer and Dave
Mennenga.
Glee, the daughter of
Clarence and Violet Raymond Hill, was born on July 21, 1922 in Clear Lake.
She graduated from the Clear Lake High School.
During WW II, Glee was
employed at an airplane factory in Omaha. She later worked at Winnebago
Industries in Forest City. She was foremost a housewife and mother.
On February 28, 1946,
Glee married Elmer Waltzing in Klemme. Elmer died in 1977. Glee married
Don Mennenga on January 4, 1979 in Belmond. Don died in 1983. She also
enjoyed many years of companionship with Ed Pals.
Glee's hobbies included
dancing at the Surf, cooking, quilting, playing Uno with her
grandchildren and playing cards with friends.
She was a member of the
Immanuel Reformed Church and was active in the women's group. She helped
with the Pleasant Peppy Pals 4-H Club as a Leader and Judge.
Preceding her in death
were her parents; husbands; daughter, Marilyn; special friend, Ed Pals;
great-granddaughter, Elizabeth; one brother, Vern Hill; and sister, Edna
Morgan.
Glee Belle is survived
by her daughters, Jolene (Charles) DeCarlo of Truro and Janice (Chris)
Creason of Perry; sons, John (Lee Ann) Waltzing and Doug (Barb) Waltzing
of Belmond; son-in-law, Larry Tisor and Becky of Mason City; 11
grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and extended family, Dave
Mennenga of Grand Island, Nebraska; Bob (Pat) Mennenga of Omaha; and
Marcia (Frank) Bergmark of Grand Island; brother, Elston (Barbara) Hill
of Springfield, Missouri; sisters, Marguerite (Edward) Hoffland of
Cresco and Geri (George) Klesel of Springfield, Missouri; and
sister-in-law, Almina Hill of Laguna, California.

Lowell Koci

Lowell H. "Bud" Koci,
83, of Manly, died on Wednesday, July 7, 2004. His body has been donated to the
University of Iowa for medical study.
A celebration of life will be held on
Saturday, July 17, at 11:00 a.m., at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Manly, with
Rev. Randy Nielsen officiating. The family will receive friends at the
church one hour prior to the services. The Edward Tosel American Legion
Post #110 will conduct military rites.
Lowell was born on
April 26, 1921, on the family farm west of Grafton, the son of John and
Laura (Prell) Koci. He attended the Grafton School where he lettered in
sports, graduating in 1939. He attended Iowa State University prior to
enlisting in the United States Marine Corps on September 7, 1942. He
served his country fighting in the Battle of Tarawa and was awarded a
Purple Heart.
While on leave he
married his sweetheart, Shirley Jeanne Ciner, on September 19, 1944 at
the old Lutheran Church in Manly. The newlyweds were stationed in
Hastings, Nebraska and San Diego. Following his discharge in September
1945, the couple returned to the Manly area. Bud spent 37 years with
Peoples Gas & Electric (later Interstate Power), including both gas and
electrical work. He retired in 1983 as area manager of the Nora Springs
office.
A true people person,
Bud gave of himself freely and wholeheartedly. He was a member of the
Manly Pioneer Town & Country Club, Manly Retirement Apartment Board of
Directors, North Central School Board, Manly Jaycees, Manly Volunteer
Fire Department, and Manly Senior Citizens Taxi Service. He played Santa
to local children during the American Legion holiday celebration. He was
recently honored by the Edward Tosel American Legion Post for being a
member in good standing for 60 years.
Bud bowled in numerous leagues
throughout the area and participated in numerous card clubs. He loved to
fish, and took twice yearly fishing trips to Canada. He also loved to
hunt and golf, and on a particularly good day on the greens he would
come home with a turtle. Bud was well known for his ability to catch and
cook turtles and he loved to host large "turtle feeds." Both vegetables
and flowers did well in Bud's many gardens. In later years he took much
enjoyment in bird watching.
Bud loved his family
most of all. While growing up his two daughters could always count on
him for unconditional love and support. Bud delighted his girls with car
ride sing-a-longs, winter picnics, massive candy making marathons, bag
swings, adventurous vacations, evening fires and moon gazing. He
welcomed his sons-in-law into his family and found delight in his five
grandchildren and one great-grandson.
Preceding him in death
were his parents; and brother-in-law, Harley Urbatsch.
Survivors include his
wife; daughters, Jean Marie (Roy) Arends of Alexander and Ann Jeanette
(Michael) Burkart of Cincinnati, Ohio; grandchildren, Kelly Lynn (Joe)
Pratt of Urbandale, Matthew Lowell Burkart of Chicago, Jill Michelle
Burkart of Austin, Texas, Andrew Joseph Arends of Las Vegas and Johnathan Charles Arends of Kansas City; great-grandson, Nicholas Lowell
Pratt of Urbandale; sister, Pearl Urbatsch; nephew, Harley Urbatsch II;
and niece, Sue Urbatsch all of Forest City; and his special fishing
buddy, George "Andy" Anderson of Nora Springs.
The family requests
that memorials be given to those organizations that Bud supported
throughout his life, such as the American Red Cross, Salvation Army,
American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, Hospice of North
Iowa, or the Bethlehem Lutheran Church.

John Stark

John W. Stark, 62,
died on Sunday, July 11, 2004, at his home in Brookings, South Dakota.
Funeral services were
held on Wednesday, July 14, at the Lake Campbell Lutheran Church.
John William, was
born on April 20, 1942 at Owatonna, Minnesota, the son of Carl William and
Susannah Mary (McMartin) Stark.
He married Lynne Boller at Decorah in
1964. In 1976 John received an award from the City of Brooklyn Park,
Minnesota for saving the life of a ten year old boy. In 1981 they moved
to Brookings where he he worked for the Coast to Coast Warehouse. He
retired in June 2002.
Survivors include his
wife of Brookings; children, Chad (Jennifer) Stark of Fargo, North
Dakota, Christopher (Bridgett) Stark of Carlyle, Illinois, Susan (Scott) Gehring of Brookings and Michael Stark of Eugene, Oregon.

Mourine Pals

Mourine R. Pals, 94, of
Belmond, died on Wednesday, July 14, 2004, at the Belmond Health Care Center.
Funeral services
were held on Saturday, July 17, at the Belmond United Methodist Church, with burial in
the Belmond Cemetery.
Pastor Mike Druhl conducted the funeral.
Organist was Dona Cleveland and
soloist was Marilyn Janssen. Casket bearers were Tom Lerdal, Joel Pals,
Terry Evans, Lynn Ostendorf, Terrill Baker and Robert Pals. Honorary
bearers were Jean Ostendorf, Alice Bryant, Rosemary Hamilton, Shirley
Fulton, Marvel Stadtlander and Judy Poolman.
Mourine Ruth, was born on
July 30, 1909, on the Lieuwen family farm in Avery Township, Hancock
County. She was the seventh of eleven children born to Teeke Tjaard and
Helen (Frey) Lieuwen. She received her education in a rural school.
Mourine married Joe
Pals of Alexander on November 9, 1929, at the Parsonage of the First
Reformed Church in Meservey. During the years when Joe worked for Wright
County, the couple made their home in Belmond. In 1947 they moved to the
Lieuwen farm where they lived until retiring to Belmond in 1974. Joe
died in 1989.
A homemaker all her
life, Mourine's home was always the focal point for many family
gatherings. She especially enjoyed New Year's Day when her family would
gather for the traditional Speck en Dicken. Her grandchildren have many
fond memories of times spent with her on the farm and later when she
moved to town.
Mourine was an excellent cook. She enjoyed trying out new
recipes and then giving them her own special touch. She enjoyed
knitting, crocheting, gardening, canning, and reading, especially
cookbooks. Over the years, Mourine served countless cups of tea to her
family and friends, along with tasty treats fresh from the oven.
She was preceded in
death by her parents; husband; brothers, George, Bert and Donald
Lieuwen; and sisters, Nellie (Hauko) Barkema, Grace (Hauko) Barkema,
Rose (Ralph) Baker and Helen (Gene) Kelley.
Survivors include her
children, Joan (James) Carroll of Osage, David (Marlys) Pals of Cedar
Falls, Carol (Roland) Lerdal of Berne, Indiana and James of Britt;
grandchildren, Susan Neuwohner, Leanne Ermer, Susan Gersema, Debra
Cunningham, Teresa Pietsch, Laura Grimm, Lisa Smith, Tom Lerdal, Nicole
Stoller and Joel Pals; fourteen great-grandchildren; four
great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Mabel (Clif) Evans of Clarion, Mary
(Andy) Jasperson of Glendale, California and Margaret (Kenneth) Parker
of Yucaipa, California: niece, Jean (Arnett) Ostendorf of Klemme;
sister-in-law, Jennie (George) Lieuwen of Belmond; and brother-in-law,
Peter (Gladys) Pals of Belmond.

Ellen Johnston

Ellen R. Johnston, 76, of
Belmond, died on Saturday, July 17, 2004, at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton.
Funeral services were held on Monday, July 19, at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home in Belmond, with
burial in the Alexander Cemetery.
Pastor Marvin Lorenz conducted the service. Casket-bearers were Michael Walrod, John Walrod, Don Suntken, Doug Suntken, Larry Suntken and Collin
Steenhard.
Ellen Ruth, the
daughter of Enno and Allie Schmidt Suntken, was born on April 26, 1928 in
Franklin County. She grew up near Dows where she attended school.
Ellen married Wallace
F. Johnston in 1951. The couple lived in the Belmond, Alexander and
Meservey areas. Ellen enjoyed crocheting afghans, cooking and baking.
Her family fondly remembers when Ellen would bake pies.
She was preceded in
death by her parents; son, Harold in 2003; brothers, Clarence and
Marvin; and sister, Inez.
Ellen is survived by
her husband, Wally of Belmond; daughter, LaNae (Michael) Walrod of
Latimer; son, Clarence of Holmes; daughter-in-law, Lelani Johnston of
Goodell; grandchildren, Alex, Matthew, John, and Tammy; five
great-grandchildren; and brother, Don (Marlene) Suntken of Belmond.

Harold Mack

Harold Terence Mack,
87, of Clarion, died on Thursday, July 22, 2004, at the Wright Medical Center.
Funeral services
were held on Saturday, July 24, 2004, at the Clarion Church of Christ, with burial
in the
Graceland Cemetery in Webster City.
Harold was born on August 20, 1916, to John and Nancy (Bamford) Mack in
Belmond. He graduated from the Belmond High School. He served in the
Army Air Corps during WW II. He married Lida Bickford on March 3, 1948,
and they farmed in Wright County for 35 years.
He was preceded in
death by his brothers, Albert and George; and sisters, Ruth and Marian.
Harold is survived by
his wife; sons, Stanley (Jane) of Kingston, Washington and Tracy (Beth)
of Lakeville, Minnesota; seven grandchildren; and sister, Ruby Alderson
of California.

Mark Staley
July 27, 2004
Mark Allen Staley, 43, of
Meservey, died on Friday, July 23, 2004, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit
in Mason City, after a short battle with cancer.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, July
27, at the Salem United Methodist Church, Meservey, with Pastor Rose
Calderon-Khan officiating. Words of remembrance were shared by Red Haugland. Interment was in
the Pleasant View Cemetery, Thornton.
Mark was born on January 19, 1961 in Madison, Wisconsin, the son of John
William and Jean LaRae (Retallick) Staley. He attended school in Oregon,
Wisconsin and graduated from the Freedom House High in Madison, Wisconsin in
1979.
Mark moved to Clear
Lake in 1985 and worked for Plastic Molders, County Market and Target.
He moved to Thornton in 1987 and worked for several contractors, Hennings, GSI, Lerdal Construction and Roger's Roofing. He worked for KR
Construction in Belmond from 2002 until this past April, when he was
unable to continue.
Mark was a volunteer
for the Klemme Boy Scout Troop 456. He enjoyed bowhunting, fishing,
camping, traveling, attending his children's activities, Harley
Davidsons, the Packers, and being with family and friends. He attended
the
Salem United Methodist Church.
Mark was preceded in
death by his father in 1991; brother, Bob in 2003 and brother, Michael
at birth.
He is survived by his
wife, Kay; daughters, Toni Staley of Barneveld, Wisconsin and Stacy Nachazel and son, Tyler Staley both at home; grandson, Braden Hosler of
Barneveld; mother, Jean (Mike) Diggan of Madison; grandmother, Ruth
Vultaggio of Columbus, Wisconsin; brothers, John (Karen) Staley of
Garner and James Staley of Stoughton, Wisconsin; sisters, Cheryll
(Dennis) McCormick and Michelle Staley all of Madison; nieces, Alicia,
Shauna, Laiken, Stacey, Erin, Karin and Ashley; nephews, Andy, Kyle,
Collin, Devon, Brett, Brian, Brent and Brandon; great-nieces, MacKenzie

Jerry Wilhite
July 27, 2004
Jerry Duane Wilhite,
65, died on Sunday, July 25, 2004, at the Belmond Medical Center, after a battle with
kidney cancer.
Memorial services were held on Wednesday, July 28, at the St.
Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Belmond, with Father David Beckman and
Deacon Nick Schmit officiating. Donna Kopriva was lector. Janyce Kluss
was
organist and Maxine Whitty was cantor.
Honorary casket bearers were David Dunfee, David Riggs, Robert Wade,
Stillman Wickert, Gilman Soma, Tom Christianson and Vic Fleener. Ushers
were Hubert Kopriva and Harry Nelson. Interment was in the St. Francis
Catholic Cemetery near Belmond. Military rites were conducted by the Belmond Honor
Guard.
Jerry Wilhite was born on
December 8, 1938 in Corwith, to Evan and Geraldine Dunlap Wilhite.
Jerry married Marjorie Zeimet on June 4, 1960 at
the St. John's Catholic Church in Bancroft. Jerry was drafted and
served with the United States Army at Fort Carson, Colorado.
After military service
he took over management of his father's business, Evan's Lounge in
Corwith. Jerry and Marj raised their son and two daughters in Corwith.
They moved to Belmond
in 1982 where Jerry managed the Belmond Country Club for 12 years. Then
for several years he was the owner of Jerry's 2nd Chance in Belmond. He
sold his business and began semi-retirement. He worked part time in the
meat department at P&G in Belmond.
Jerry was a true people
person and had made many friends. He was a good cook, loved to play
cribbage and poker, enjoyed gardening (especially his strawberry patch)
and he loved to fish with Marj. Jerry collected elephants, iron wood,
and oak crafts.
He was preceded in
death by his father, Evan; and his step-father, Ray Stout.
Jerry is survived by
his wife of Belmond; son, Todd (Shelley) Wilhite of Altoona; daughters,
Brenda (Brent) DeBerg of Bristow and Connie (Todd) Stewart of Royal;
mother, Geraldine Stout of Belmond; brothers, Ted (Trish) Wilhite of
Largo, Florida and Bill Wilhite of Tampa, Florida; grandsons, Joshua
Wilhite, Nick, Steven and Michael DeBerg, Chance and Casey Stewart; and
five sisters-in-law.

Gerhard Gabrielson

Gerhard Arnold
Gabrielson, 91, of Belmond, died on Monday, July 26, 2004, at the Belmond Health Care
Center.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 31, at the St. Olaf Lutheran Church in
rural Belmond, with Pastor Lowell Halvorson officiating. Interment was in
the Belmond Cemetery.
Organist was Carol Severson, soloist was Marilyn Janssen and the men's
chorus also sang. Casket bearers were Duan Mennenga, Daren Mennenga, John
Gabrielson, Daniel Gabrielson, Kraig Oeltjenbruns, Brent King and Roger
Reid. Ushers were Cliff Toft and Alfred Johnson.
Gerhard, the son of
Gabriel and Anna Sunde-Peterson Gabrielson, was born on March 24, 1913 near
Belmond. He was baptized and confirmed at the St. Olaf Church. He attended
rural schools in Wright County.
Gerhard married Marion Odegard of Waterville, Iowa on January l5, l938 at
the St. John's Lutheran
Parsonage in Waukon. They farmed in the Belmond and Waterville areas for
more than thirty years. In 1972 they moved to Waukon where Gerhard did
painting, drove a school bus, and was foreman for the Allamakee County
Road Department. In l978 they moved to Belmond. He enjoyed farm life,
family, fishing, gardening and flowers.
Gerhard was a member of
the Switzerland of Iowa Barber Shoppers at Waukon for thirteen years. He
was an active member of the Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church of
rural Waterville and had served as President. He was a faithful member
of the St. Olaf Lutheran Church and sang with the men's chorus for many
years.
He was preceded in
death by his parents; son, James; grandson, Benjamin; brothers, Tolford,
Elmer and Norman; and sisters, Elizabeth Waddington, Burley Gabrielson
and Ruth Boller.
He is survived by his
wife; son, Dale and wife, Kathleen of Arlington, Tennessee; daughters,
Marjorie (Cletus) Liska of Clear Lake and Margaret (Larry) Mennenga of
Belmond; grandchildren, Duan Mennenga of Chicago, Daren (Diena) Mennenga
of Belmond, Carolyn (Kraig) Oeltjenbruns of Eagan, Minnesota, Christine
(Brent) King of Urbandale, John (Jennifer) Gabrielson of Arlington,
Tennessee, Daniel (Andrea) Gabrielson of Arlington and Caroline (Roger)
Reid of Oakland, Tennessee; great-grandchildren, Jessica, Anna, Brinley,
Carly, Jamie, Nathan, Tristan, Ty and Wyatt; brother, Lester of Belmond;

Geneva Lesher

Geneva (Genevieve)
Fern Boswell Lesher, 79, of Clarion, died on Monday, July 26, 2004, at her home.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, July 29, at the Ewing Dugger Funeral Home, with Elder
Jerry Smith officiating. Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery, Clarion.
Geneva was born on June 24, 1925 in Lehigh, to Clarence and Pearl (Kent)
Boswell. The family moved to Webster City, where Geneva attended school.
Geneva and Dannie Lesher were married
on May 23, 1941 at Bethany, Missouri. They resided in
Rowan for many years and owned the Rowan Tap.
Geneva worked for
Webster City Products from 1963 until retirement. After retirement she
enjoyed her family, fishing, gardening, traveling, school events for her
family, and church fellowship.
Geneva was preceded in
death by her parents; husband; sisters, Elnor Glawe, Alice Boylan and
Dorothy Berleen; and two great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her
daughters, Gloria Weimann and Karen (Bill) Wason; grandchildren, Starla
(Jerry) Chapman and their children, Mike and Jenni, Susie (Dave) Chapman
and their children, Shaun and Jessica, and Scott Wason and his children,
Zachary, Katie and Jacob; sister, Verla (Leonard) Carlson of Webster
City; brother, Everett (Gene) Boswell of Norfolk, Virginia; and
sister-in-law, Virginia (Louis) Knosby.

Evelyn Mae Watne

Evelyn Mae Watne, 85, of
Belmond, died on Friday, July 30, 2004, at the Belmond Health Care Center.
Funeral services
were held on Tuesday, August 3, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond, with Pastor
Rod Hopp officiating. Interment was in the Belmond Cemetery.
Organist was Eldoris Bunnell and soloist was Marilyn Janssen.
Casket bearers were, Mike Kolbeck, Jeff Watne, Rodney Halfpop, Mark Soma,
Troy Watne, Jason McNertney and Jeremy Watne. Ushers were Al Charlson
and Loren Bamford.
Evelyn Mae Case, the
daughter of Floyd and Gladys Sumners Case, was born on August 24, 1918, in
Clarion. She graduated from the Clarion High School in 1936 and then
worked as a telephone operator for Northwestern Bell in Clarion.
On September 22, 1938,
she married John Watne of Eagle Grove at Macon, Missouri. The couple
owned a small restaurant in Bayard, Iowa until 1943. They later moved to
the Clarion/Belmond area, where they farmed until retiring and moving to
Clarion 1981. John died in 1981, and in 1988 Evelyn moved to Belmond.
Evelyn was a member of
the Trinity Lutheran Church. She enjoyed embroidery, sewing and reading.
She was preceded in
death by her parents; husband; great-granddaughter, Kenlee Uhlenhopp;
sister, Genevieve; and brother, Bernard.
She is survived by her
seven children, Marcia (Earl) Kolbeck of Ashton, Jon (Betty) Watne of
Clarion, Susan (Leland) Halfpop of Goodell, Phebe (Charles) Soma of
Belmond, Ted (Barbara) Watne of Belmond, Norma (Jerry) McNertney of Ames
and Craig (Connie) Watne of Belmond; twenty-seven grandchildren; forty
nine great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Anne Case of Clarion.

Jean M. Hattel, 81, died on Saturday, July 31, at the Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, August 4, at the
Cedar Heights Presbyterian Church in Cedar Falls, with interment in the
Oakland Cemetery in Manchester, Iowa. Mrs. Hattel was a former Belmond
resident.
