Roland was born on May
24, 1945 in rural Klemme, the son of Fred and Ethel Netland Sobek.
He attended Klemme Schools and worked as a farm hand in his youth.
He married Patricia Houdek and they had four children. They were
later divorced.
For most of his
working life, Roland was a mechanic. He was employed at a number of
places in north Iowa and had received numerous awards for his
mechanical skills from Ford Motor Company. His career was impaired
by his disease, mytonic dystrophy and in recent years he did
mechanic work and tinkering on his own.
Roland married his
long time friend and companion, Kay Peterson on August 5, 2000. They
enjoyed fishing excursions to Twin Lakes near Kanawha and trips to
area casinos. He liked gardening and bowling. As his health declined
he found pleasure in the simple things of life.
He was preceded in
death by his parents; daughter, Dawn; and brothers, Roger, Glenn and
Douglas.
Survivors include
his wife; sons, Gregory of Clear Lake, Gary (Jamie) of Britt and
Robert of West Union; step-son, Vaughn Peterson (Rian Rave) of
Marshall, Minnesota; step-daughter, Vanessa (Derek) Bell of Sioux
City; brother, Rodney (Cindy) Sobek of Knoxville; sisters, Bev
(John) Clark of Gladbrook and Sheryll (John) Klesel of Garner;
