Doris Musselman

Doris E. Musselman,
86, of Belmond, died on Thursday, August 5, 2004, at
the Mercy Medical
Center in Mason City.
Funeral services were held on Monday, August 9,
2004, at the Belmond United Methodist Church, with Rev.
Mike Druhl officiating.
Accompanists were Dona Cleveland and JoAn Skyrme. Vocalists were Cyndy
McNulty and Amy Pollitt. A poem was read by Sheila
Ruka.
Casket bearers were Frank Quigley, Todd Walrod, George Dickerson, Stan
Brandmeyer, Mark McNulty and Terry Anderson. Ushers
were Gary Erlsand and Roger Modderman.
Doris, the daughter of John A. and Augusta Jacobs Berghefer, was born
on June 26, 1918 in Rockwell. She
attended school in Garner and Belmond and graduated
from the Belmond High School in 1935. She finished
post-grad high school in 1938 and then taught school
in Dows for a year.
Doris
married Glen A. Musselman of Fort Dodge at the Belmond
Methodist Church on May 5, 1940. They made their home
in Belmond where she was employed as an aide in the
Belmond Community Hospital for 17 years.
Following Glen's death in 1965, Doris attended NIACC
and received her associate degree in nursing in 1970.
Following graduation she was employed at the Mercy Medical
Center until 1972, at which time she joined the Story
County Public Health Nurses.
Doris
served as a board member of the Easter Seal Society in
Des Moines for four years and was on the board of the
Edith Hale Child Care Center in Nevada for two years.
She moved to Arkansas in 1981 but returned to Belmond
in 1982 to be one of the first residents at the
Redder/McLaughlin Apartments, where she was residing
at the time of her death.
Doris
was a member of the Belmond United Methodist Women and
church circles. She enjoyed spending time with her
family, reading, making quilts, traveling, working
crossword puzzles, and giving presentations. Doris was
active in Congregate Meals, Senior Citizens, Progress
Club, Charter Member of the VFW Auxiliary, WaTanYe,
Friends of the Library, Senior Cabinet of Elderbridge,
Hospital Auxiliary, RSVP, and SALT.
She
was preceded in death by her parents; husband;
daughter, Vicki and grandson, David both in 1998; a
sister; and a brother.
Doris
is survived by her son, Randyll (Barbara) Musselman of
Brownsbrug, Indiana; daughters, Barbara (James)
Dickerson of Altoona, Sheila (Gary) Ruka of Belmond
and Cyndy McNulty of Belmond; sixteen grandchildren;
twenty one great-grandchildren; ten
great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Edna Kroeger of
Belmond, Ina Stille of Garner and Garnett Beenen of
Newton.

Taus Harms, Jr.

Taus John Harms, 65,
of
Belmond, died on Thursday, August 5, 2004, at the Belmond Medical
Center, following a battle with cancer.
Funeral services were
held on Monday, August 9, 2004, at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home
in Belmond, with Pastor Lowell Halvorson officiating.
Burial was in the Belmond Cemetery.
Organist was Dona Cleveland and vocalist was Marilyn Janssen. Casket bearers were Carl Heginger, Bob Steenblock,
Jeremy Harms, Gary Harms, Jr., Dave Prescott and Rusty
Steenblock. Honorary casket bearers were fellow
employees at Sukup Manufacturing.
Taus
John Harms Jr., the son of Taus and Cecelia (Heginger)
Harms, was born on January 15, 1939 in rural Garner. He
attended school in Chapin, Belmond and Thornton. He
hauled milk for the Hampton and Goldfield creameries
shortly after leaving school. In 1973 he went to work
for Sukup Manufacturing Company in Sheffield.
He lived
in Sheffield for many years before moving to his small
acreage near Belmond. He retired on June 24, 2004, after
thirty-one years with the company. He enjoyed working
for Sukup's and was a good and faithful employee.
Taus
enjoyed playing cards and dice games, tending to his
livestock, working with his International Tractor, and
going to casinos whenever he could. He was baptized
and received his first communion on July 31, 2004.
He
was preceded in death by his father in 2003; and mother
in l982.
Survivors include his brothers, Bennie (Jean) of
Mason City, Larry (Maxine) of Sanborn, Harry (Barbara)
of Hampton, Donald (Georgia) of Hampton, Ronald
(Nancy) of Belmond, Jerry (Marlene) of Rockledge,
Florida and Gary of Rockledge; sisters, Darlene
(Dexter) Ewers of Mason City and Arlene Weimann of
Nora Springs; and uncle, Herman (Zelma) Harms of
Forest City.

Viola Laaveg

Viola M. Laaveg, 85,
of
Mason City, formerly of Belmond, died suddenly on
Friday, August
6, 2004 at home.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, August 10, at the
Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond, with Rev. Rod Hopp
officiating. Interment was in the Belmond Cemetery.
Viola was born on December 13, 1918, to Olaf and Lena Larson on the family
Happy Home Farm near Park River, North Dakota. She was
baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran near Hoople,
North Dakota. She was raised on the North Dakota
prairie and graduated from the Walsh County Agriculture
and Training High School in 1935. She attended
business school and worked as a secretary. She also
attended the Moody Evangelical Bible School in
Chicago.
Viola
married Oscar Laaveg on September 11, 1943. After his
ordination, she was a Lutheran Pastor's wife and
homemaker until retiring to Belmond in 1982. They
served parishes in Kindred, North Dakota; Canton and
Rapid City, South Dakota; Helmar, Illinois; Camrose,
Canada; Belmond, Cylinder and Fertile in Iowa. She
lived in Mason City the last five years.
Viola loved
growing flowers, music, poetry, reading, cooking,
sewing, and being a mother, grandmother and
great-grandmother. She was active in her church,
Christian prayer groups, and loved family interaction.
She
was preceded in death by her husband; parents;
brothers, Ernest, Norman and Harry; and sister, Myrtle
Berg.
Survivors include her sons, Dr. Sterling Laaveg and
wife, Rita (Dorr) of Mason City, Paul Laaveg and wife,
Nancy (Coffman) of Purcellville, Virginia, Joel Laaveg
and wife, Gina (Sundry) of Clear Lake and Pastor Lee Laaveg and wife, Denise (Helland) of Forest City;
grandchildren, Aaron, Nicole (John) Lozier, Lisa
(Jeff) Berg, Jacob, Philip, Dan, Jessica, Andrea
(Seth) Miner, Heather and Luke; great-grandson, Robert
Berg; and sister, Pearl (Eugene) Loftsgard of Park
River.

Ernest Lee Miller, 57, of Hayfield, died
on Monday, August
9, 2004, in rural Crystal Lake.
Funeral services will be
held on Friday, August 13, at 10:30 a.m., at the Garner United
Methodist Church. Interment will follow in the Belmond
Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted by the VFW
of Garner. Visitation will be from 4-8:00 p.m., on
Thursday at the Cataldo Funeral Home in Garner.

Emma Mary Wessels
August 17, 2004
Emma Mary Wessels, 92,
died on Monday, August 16, 2004.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, August 18, at the
Bethany Reformed Church in Belmond. Rev. William Kroon
officiated.
Organist was Maxine Whitty and soloist was Marilyn Janssen. Ushers were
Bud Boelman and Leon Robertson. Casket bearers were
Marlin Stadtlander, Bob Vierkant, Robert Modderman and
Wayne Pals. Interment was in the Belmond Cemetery.
Emma Boelman, was born
on September 19, 1911, at home in Avery
Township, Hancock County, the daughter of Ben and Ella
(Eekhoff) Boelman. She was one of 11 children and
attended rural schools.
She
married George Wessels on January 29, 1943, at the
Reformed Church in Meservey. They made their home in
Belmond for many years. She was an active member of
the
Bethany Reformed Church and was involved in the Guild
and study groups.
Emma
was a homemaker and had done housekeeping for many
people. In earlier years she enjoyed camping and trout
fishing trips with her husband. Family reunions were
very special to her. Favorite pastimes were marbles,
cards with her grandchildren, Bingo, "500" card clubs
and going on bus trips.
Preceding her in death were her husband in 1996;
siblings, Rena, Alice, Hannah, Harry, Ben, Clarence,
Andrew and Henry.
Survivors include her sons, Jerald Wessels and his
fiancée, Debbie Buehler of Belmond and Ardell Boelman,
most recently a resident of the Belmond Health Care
Center; grandsons, Jason (Jackie) Wessels and their
children, Madison Kaye Ann and Tristan David of
Belmond and Josh (Mandy) Wessels of Dows; brother,
Donald Boelman of Tucson, Arizona; and sister, Grace
Johnson of Belmond.

Betty Gallagher

Betty Gallagher, 84,
wife of former Independent editor and co-owner, J. R.
"Pat" Gallagher, died on Tuesday, August 24, 2004 in Iowa City. A
private family service will be held at a later date.
The Gallaghers lived in Belmond from 1949 to 1968, at which time they
moved to West Branch. Betty retired as an archivist at
the Herbert Hoover Memorial Library in 1985, the same
year she graduated from the University of Iowa with a
BA in history.
Survivors include her children, Nancy (Jon)
Mendenhall of Fort Collins, Colorado, Dennis (Lynda)
of Bella Vista, Arkansas, Kevin (Rose) of Emigrant,
Montana and Steve (Carol) of North Liberty; five
grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Jean Marie Hattel

Jean Marie Hattel, 81, died
on Tuesday, August 24, 2004,
at Cedar Falls.
Thomas E. and Jean Hattel, lived in Belmond from 1958 to 1966 where the
family worked together at the Super Value grocery
store. They moved to Waverly from Belmond and then to
Cedar Falls in 1968.
Survivors are a daughter, Marcia Fitzgerald; and a
son, Alan (Susan) Hattel.

Marvis Tideback

Marvis Tideback, 85,
of
Aitkin, Minnesota, died on Thursday, August 26, 2004. A private
funeral
service will be held at a later date.
She was born on September 8, 1918 in Palo Alto County, to Roy and Bessie
(Crane) Lowman. She graduated from the Clear Lake High
School.
She
married Russell Tideback in 1948. She worked for over
50 years for R. W. Courson Insurance in Belmond,
retiring as office manager. She was a member of the
Belmond United Methodist Church.
She
was preceded in death by her husband; and brothers,
Irvin, Ben and Hyle Lowman.
Survivors include her son, Larry of Aitkin; brother,
Victor Lowman of Phoenix, Arizona; and grandchildren,
Lynn Robbins of Klemme and Jodie Foster of Lakewood,
Minnesota.

Irvin Soma

Irvin T. Soma, 82, of Marshalltown, formerly
of Belmond, died on Friday, August 27, at the Veteran's Home in
Marshalltown.
He was the father of 19 children, and has numerous grandchildren and
great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two
sisters, Inez Pasquariello of Belmond and Jean Sheller
of Port Orchard, Washington.
