Lila Lekwa

Lila Hopkey Lekwa, 79, of Clear Lake, died
on Saturday, April
3, 2004, at the Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake.
Funeral services
will be held on Wednesday, April 7, at 1:30 p.m., at the Zion
Lutheran Church in Clear Lake, with Rev. Derik Yarian
and Dick Scott (lay assistant) officiating. Interment
will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery.
Lila
was born on May 4, 1923 near Belmond, the daughter of Dan
and Sadie (Van Buskirk) Fjetland. She attended grade
school at Belmond and graduated from the Clarion High
School.
She married Harvey C. Hopkey on June 1, 1940.
They farmed southwest of Alexander until 1967 and then
moved to Clear Lake where she worked at Johnson's
Paint and Gift. She later worked at Orkin
Exterminating in Mason City for 20 years. Harvey died
in 1985. She married Glen Lekwa of Clear Lake on
August 18, 1990.
She
was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church and the women's
circle. Her greatest joy was spending time with her
grandchildren. She also enjoyed bowling, boating,
going to little league games and doing puzzles.
She
was preceded in death by her parents; first husband;
an infant daughter; an infant brother; and brother, Darold Fjetland.
Survivors include her husband of Clear Lake;
daughter, Sharon (Raymond) Barlow of Columbus,
Nebraska; son, David (Carol) Hopkey of Newton;
grandchildren, Bradley (Amy Sue) Hopkey of Des Moines,
Robyn (Jeff) Schmidt of Des Moines, Kimberly (Darin)
Berger of Park Rapids, Minnesota and Gregory (Faith)
Barlow of Lincoln, Nebraska; seven
great-grandchildren; brothers, Eldon Fjetland of
Riceville, Lorin (Marcella) Fjetland of Belmond, Larry
(Ruby) Fjetland of LeRoy, Minnesota, Donald (Ilalee)
Fjetland of Riceville and Danny (Ivadelle) Fjetland of
Riceville; and sisters, Donna (Merlin) Johnson of
Meservey, Vivian (Delbert) Pals of Meservey, Judy Peil
of Alexander and Betty Pollard of Osage.

Norma DuVall
April 13, 2004
Norma C. DuVall, 82, died on
Thursday, April 8, 2004, at
the Belmond Health Care Center.
Funeral services were held on Monday,
April 12, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond, with
Rev. Rod Hopp officiating. Interment was on Tuesday, April 13,
in
the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery near Kimballton, Iowa.
Organist was Eldoris Bunnell. Ushers were Loren
Bamford and Al Charlson.
Norma
Rasmussen, was born on May 10, 1921 in Kimballton, the
daughter of Einar and Ann (Nielsen) Rasmussen. She was
baptized at the Immanuel Lutheran Church and attended
the Kimballton School through the eighth grade.
On
September 20, 1940, she married Duane DuVall. They
farmed in the Harlan area for a few years before
moving back to Kimballton in 1957.
Norma
was employed at nursing homes in Harlan and Atlantic.
In 1964 the DuValls purchased the Elk Horn Cafe, which
they operated until Duane died in 1970. Norma moved to
Audubon following Duane's death. She owned and
operated a ceramic shop. In 1975 Norma moved to Des
Moines and worked for the Iowa Children and Family
Services until her retirement. In 1988 she moved to
Belmond and lived at the Belmond Community
Apartments. She was a resident of the Belmond Health
Care Center for one year.
Norma
enjoyed being around people, making afghans and
cross-stitch items for her family and friends. She
enjoyed displaying pictures of her grandchildren and
their families and spending summers camping at the
lake at Goodell. She had a wonderful ability to
connect with people and was like a second grandma to
many. She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband;
sisters, Celma Breining, Elna Brewer, Dagny Breining
and Neoma Rasmussen; brother, Harlvor Rasmussen;
granddaughter, Cherie DuVall; and great-grandson,
Nicholas DuVall.
She
is survived by her sons, Arnold (Marlene) DuVall of
Lacona, Roger "Dean" (Beverly) DuVall of Belmond and
Wayne (Tammy) DuVall of Goodell; grandchildren, Debbie
Teague, Michael DuVall, Lisa McLaren, Lana Wittrock,
Joel DuVall, Dawn Sander, Cheryl DuVall, Anna Marie
DuVall, Charlie Scarlett, Tanya Woolery, Randy Koenig
and Kristy Koenig; 22 great-grandchildren; two
great-great-grandchildren; and sister, Irma Desler.

Anne Schad

Anne Kathryn Schad, 93, of Belmond, died
on Saturday, April
10, 2004, at the Belmond Health Care Center.
A memorial
Mass was held on Monday, April 12, at the St. Francis Xavier
Catholic Church in Belmond, with Father David Beckman
and Deacon Nick Schmit officiating. Interment will
take place in the Resurrection Catholic Cemetery in
Mendota Heights, Minnesota.
Anne,
the daughter of Joseph and Mary Charipar Moldan, was
born on August 4, 1910, on a claim in Deadwood, South
Dakota. Shortly after Anne was born the family moved
to Olivia, Minnesota. Seven years later they moved to
a farm near Foreston, Minnesota. Anne graduated from
Milaca High in 1929 and attended St. Cloud Business
College. She was later employed as a secretary at
Powers Dry Goods and Benson Quinn Company.
Anne
married Edwin Schad on November 28, 1935 at the Incarnation
Parish in Minneapolis. The couple made their home in
Minneapolis and later moved to Owatonna. They owned
Fair Lanes Bowling Alley, where they worked side by
side until retiring in 1966.
Anne
enjoyed sewing, golfing, bowling and playing cards.
She also enjoyed gardening and fishing. Anne was a
member of the St. Joseph Church in Owatonna, Elks and
the Senior Center.
She
was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Edwin
in 2003; and brother, George Moldan.
Anne
is survived by her daughters, Mary Jean Kroiss of Little
Canada, Minnesota and Kathryn McClintock (Stephen) of
Belmond; grandchildren, Christine Kroiss and Brian
Larson; and sister, Esther Danelek of Brooklyn Center,
Minnesota.

Sam Osier
April 13, 2004
Samuel C. Osier, 40, formerly of Rowan, died
on Saturday,
April 10, 2004, as the result of an accident near his
home in Van Meter, Iowa. Osier
was killed when a drunk driver struck him as he and
several family members were walking along the side of
a road near their home.
A time of remembrance will be held
at 7:00 p.m., on Friday, April 16, at the Caldwell-Raddatz
Funeral Home, 8201 Hickman Road, Urbandale. Visitation
will be from 5-8:00 p.m., on Friday at the funeral home.
Sam
was born on May 18, 1963 in Cedar Falls. He met his wife,
Toni, in Waterloo in 1982 while attending Hawkeye
Tech. They were married on June 7, 1986 in Rowan. Sam and
Toni moved to Des Moines in 1989 and then to Van Meter
in 1997. Sam was a maintenance manager for Waste
Connections of Iowa. He was a devoted family man and
enjoyed hunting, hiking mountain trails and riding his
Harley.
Sam
is survived by his wife; children, Chanci, Marina and
Alex; father, Jerald Osier (Beverly Millang) of Story
City; mother, Marjorie Nelsen Osier of Rowan; brother,
David Osier (Shari) of Bondurant; sister, Karen Smith
(Michael) of Belmond; brother, Walt Osier of Salem;
cousins, Tom Osier (Shelley) of Nevada and Tony Osier
of Northfield, Minnesota.

Bernard Vierkant

Bernard A. Vierkant, 93, died on
Saturday, April 10, 2004.
Burial will be in the Meservey Cemetery.
Bernard was born on August 24, 1910, to Berend and
Gezena Vierkant in Franklin County. He farmed until
1961, worked for the Atomic Energy Commission, and in
later years worked for Wal-Mart.
Survivors are his wife, Marie Vierkant of
Jacksonville, Texas; son, Arlyn Vierkant of
Jacksonville; daughter, Mary Lee Thiessen of
Davenport; 9 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren.

Peter Steenblock

Peter Andrew Steenblock,
89, died on Tuesday, April 13, 2004, in Bishop, California where he had lived the
past 30 years.
A short service was held for his
interment on Saturday, April 24, 2004, at the Immanuel Reformed Church
Cemetery near Belmond.
Peter
was born on November 28, 1914 in Belmond, the son of Harm
and Ida Bohning Steenblock. He graduated from the Belmond
High School and served in the U.S. Navy from 1942-46.
He
married Kay Wendt of Los Angeles and they had three
sons. She died of cancer. Later he married Pauline
Beech.
He
was preceded in death by his parents; first wife;
sisters, Annie Meints, Lena Loats and Ida Buseman; and
brothers, Herbert and Peter (and Andrew in infancy).
Survivors include his wife, Pauline; sons, Alfred and
Peter J. of California and Jeremiah of Idaho; four
grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sister,
Esther Hill of Belmond; nephews, Harold Buseman of
Belmond and Eric Buseman of Clive.

Dorotha Ketchum

Dorotha "Dot" Ketchum, 95,
of Rowan, died on Friday, April 16,
2004, at the USA Healthcare Center in Clarion.
Funeral services
were held on Tuesday, April 20, at the United Church of Rowan, with
Pastor Janet Wearda officiating. Burial was in
the Graceland Cemetery, Rowan.
Dorotha Lukens was born in Wright County on March
25, 1909, the daughter of Joe E. and Flora (Crabtree)
Lukens. She attended the Grant #7 Country School and
graduated from the Clarion High School in 1927.
She married Philip E. Ketchum of Rowan on
February 21, 1929. They farmed for all of their
married years. She was active in her church by serving
on several church boards, teaching Sunday School for
many years, being a member of the Alpha Circle,
Women's Fellowship, a 4-H Leader serving on the County
4-H Committee, Square-Circle Club, Quilting Club,
Progress Club and neighborhood events. She also
enjoyed gardening, flowers and crocheting. In 1968 Dot
and Philip moved to town and enjoyed traveling,
gardening and card clubs.
Dot was preceded in death by her parents; sister,
Violet; an infant brother; husband, Philip in 1987;
grandson, James Crafton; and foster daughter, Dorothy Schraeder.
Dot is survived by
her sons, Robert J. (Inez) Ketchum
of Belmond, Sidney H. (Barbara) Ketchum of Hayden
Lake, Idaho and Phillip Ketchum of Bagley; daughter,
Patricia (Verle) Crafton of Rowan; 11 grandchildren;
three step-grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Dwight Bovenmyer

Dwight C. Bovenmyer, 73, of Garner, died
on Saturday, April 17,
2004, at his home.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, April 20, at the Zion
Evangelical and Reformed Church in Garner.
Dwight Courtney Bovenmyer, the son of Carl and
Dorothy (McCune) Bovenmyer, was born on May 11, 1930 at
Marshalltown. He graduated from the Green Mountain High
School in 1948, he then graduated from the Marshalltown
Business College.
On October 28, 1956, he married
Vivian Stromer in Garner. He was employed by the Iowa
Highway Commission and then farmed.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and
brothers, Dean, Keith and Max Bovenmyer
Dwight is survived by his wife; son, Kent
(Rebecca) Bovenmyer of Wilton; daughter, Joleen
(Steve) Rolland of Belmond; six grandchildren; and
sister, Beverly (John) Parrott of Spokane, Washington.

Gladys Marker

Gladys Marker, 84, died on Saturday, April 17, 2004, at
the Westview Care Center in Britt.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday,
April 21, at the First Lutheran Church in Britt, with Rev.
John Meyer and Janelle Siffring officiating. Burial was
in the Evergreen Cemetery, Britt.
Gladys Elnora Draves, was born
on November 6, 1919 at
Waltham, Minnesota, the daughter of Edward and Emma (Jorges)
Draves. She attended country school and graduated from
the
Dows High School. She married Carl Marker on February
19, 1939. They farmed in the Dows-Galt area until
moving to a farm near Britt in 1948.
Gladys was a farm wife and homemaker. She also
worked as a seamstress at Stitchcraft in Forest City
and as a cook at the Woden-Crystal Lake School. She
loved cooking, gardening, sewing, camping, traveling,
youth activities and was always a welcoming hostess
to neighbors, friends and family.
She was a member of
the St. John's Lutheran Church of
Woden and then First Lutheran Church of Britt. She was
a member of the women of the church, band mothers,
PTA and served on various committees. She and Carl
were members of the Silver Stars senior group. She was
an advocate for health and social concerns for
seniors. This led to her recognition as an Outstanding
Senior Citizen from Governor, Terry Branstad.
Gladys was preceded in death by her parents;
husband; son, Arnold; grandsons, Aaron and Eric Kipp;
brothers, Arthur, Carl, Clarence, Harry and Anton
Draves; and sister, Edna Eccles.
Gladys is survived by
her daughter, Janet (Greg) Kipp
of New Richmond, Wisconsin; son, Douglas of Rochester, Minnesota;
grandchildren, Timothy (Laura) Marker of Jackson, Minnesota,
Thomas (Colleen) Marker of Mason, Illinois, Andrea Jo (Jon)
Green of New Richmond and Kathryne Marker of
Rochester; great-grandchildren, Emily and John Marker
of Jackson and Danielle and Rebecca Marker of Mason;
brother, Emil Draves of Webster City; and sisters, Hilda
Jury of Ankeny and Estella State of Belmond.

Hattie Koenen

Hattie E. Koenen, 97, of Belmond, died
on Sunday, April 18,
2004, at the Belmond Medical Center.
Funeral services were held
at 10:30 a.m., on Wednesday, April 21, at the First Reformed
Church in Meservey, with Pastor Rodney Meester
officiating. Burial was in the Meservey Cemetery.
Hattie Ethel, the daughter of Peter and Margaret
(Frohling) Steenblock, was born on January 25, 1907, on a
farm near Goodell. She attended country schools and
then helped raise her brothers and sisters.
Hattie married Bernhard Koenen
on December 25, 1930
in George, Iowa by Pastor, Peter Koenen. They farmed
several places between Belmond and Meservey and raised
their family. They moved into Belmond in November of
1977. Bernhard died in December of 1986. Hattie moved
to the McBurney Apartments in 2000.
Hattie loved the outdoors, farming most of all.
She enjoyed flowers and gardening, reading and
crochet. Hattie's grandchildren and great-grandchildren meant the world to her. She was a member
of the First Reformed Church in Meservey, where she was
involved with the Reformed Church Women Missions.
She was preceded in death by her parents;
husband; four sisters; and seven brothers.
Hattie is survived by
her son, Byron (Vergene) Koenen
of Clear Lake; daughter, Marjorie (Ronald) Jurgens of
Belmond; grandchildren, Valerie (Wayne) Koehler, Jeff
(Jeanie) Jurgens, Renae (Joseph) Jones and Kimberly
(Darrin) Johnson; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and brother, Richard Steenblock of
Belmond.

Brad Fahrmann

Bradley Wayne Fahrmann,
20, of Latimer, died of cancer on Thursday, April 22, 2004, at
the Mary
Greeley Medical Center in Ames.
Funeral services were held on Saturday,
April 24, at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Latimer.
Brad
was born on February 17, 1984 in Hampton, the son of Dean
and Ida Williams Fahrmann. He graduated from the CAL High
School in 2002 and had attended Iowa State University.
He
was preceded in death his by grandparents, LaVerne and
Verna Fahrmann; and grandfather, Wayne Williams.
Survivors include his parents; brother, Paul of
Latimer; and grandmother, Virginia Williams of
Danville.

Luther Tate
May 4, 2004
Luther Lester Tate, Jr., died on Saturday, April 24, 2004, at the
Veterans Administration Medical Center in Iowa City.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, May 2, at the First Lutheran Church in
Clarion, with Rev. Gary Boen officiating. Interment was
in the Evergreen Cemetery, Clarion.
Luther was born on February 8, 1931, the son of Anna E.
Subject and Luther L. Tate, Sr. Raised in Clarion, he
often spent summers with his Uncle Virgil and Aunt
Ruby Tate on their farm near Renwick. Luther attended
the Clarion Pubic Schools and was a member of the
track team
On July 26, 1949, he entered the United States
Army and earned his high school diploma in the
military. Luther served with the 16th Infantry
Regiment and was honorably discharged as a Private First
Class on November 15, 1952.
In the mid 1950's he was married to Margaret
Erickson. They had two children, Diane and Robert. In
1962 he married Leona Anderson. They had one child,
Jeanette.
Luther had several occupations, including truck
driving, railroading, construction, and operating a
feed mill. He retired in September of 1992 as a
weather observer for Weather Data Services at the
Mason City Airport.
When Luther's health began to decline earlier
this spring, he left his home in Meservey for the USA
Health Care Center in Clarion. The staff and residents
became his second family in the six short weeks he
resided there.
He was preceded in death by
his wife, Leona; father,
Luther L. Tate, Sr.; mother, Anna Evans; and
step-father, Ivan Evans.
Survivors include his children; granddaughter,
Heather Nelson of Roland; great-grandson, Gabriel
Nelson of Roland; and sister, Shirley Covington of
Goodell.
