Rex L. Steffens
November 5, 2002
Rex L. Steffens, 88, died on Friday, November 1, 2002, at the Churchill Hospital near
Fallon, Nevada.
Funeral services were held on Monday, November 4, at the Epworth United Methodist
Church, with burial in the Churchill Cemetery.
Rex Larwell,
was born on October 3, 1914 in Rowan, the son of Clifford and Lanora Steffens.
He was a veteran of WW II and a bridge supervisor for the Iowa DOT. He was a
member of the Rowan VFW and Legion. He and his wife, Loretta, had been
residents of Fallon since 1981.
Preceding
him in death was his sister, Lois Hall.
Survivors
include his wife of 66 years; daughters, Phyllis (John) Serpa of Fallon and
Connie (Bob) Berns of Belmond; five grandchildren; and six
great-grandchildren.

Jane Prawit
November 5, 2002
Jane Prawit, 96, of Belmond, formerly of the Omaha area, died on Saturday, November
2, 2002, at the Belmond Health Care Center.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday,
November 6, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond, with the Rev. Rod Hopp
officiating.
Jane
Roberts, was born on September 17, 1906 at Omaha, the daughter of Hal and Janet
(Marriott) Roberts. She was united in marriage to C. Donald Prawit on
December 20, 1925 at Bloomfield, New Jersey. They lived in Bloomfield, East
Orange, New Jersey and Randolph, Nebraska before making their home in Omaha
for many years.
She was a
homemaker and had been employed in the advertising department at the Omaha World
Herald, the personnel department of the Nebraska Methodist Hospital, and was a
real estate agent for various firms in the Omaha area.
Jane moved
to Belmond in 1997 and lived at the retirement center until becoming a
resident of the Belmond Health Care Center in December of 1998. At the care
center she participated in the Trinity Lutheran Church services.
Preceding
her in death were her parents; her husband; and two daughters, Ruth Popischil and Janet Chapman.
Survivors
are her daughter, Patricia (Nick) Schmit of Belmond; 17 grandchildren; and
28 great-grandchildren.

Mabel Sybilrud
November 5, 2002
Mabel Luella Sybilrud, 98, of Belmond, died on Sunday, November 3, 2002, at the
Belmond Health Care Center.
Funeral
services will be held on Thursday, November 7, at 1:30 p.m., at the Trinity Lutheran
Church in Belmond, with the Rev. Rod Hopp officiating. Burial will be in the
St. Olaf Church Cemetery, near Belmond.
Mabel
Larson, was born on May 2, 1904, on her parents farm in Hancock County near
Kanawha. She was baptized at the St. Olaf Lutheran Church and confirmed at the
Lutheran church in Kanawha. Mabel attended Kanawha Schools. She moved with
her family to Minnesota at age 15.
Mabel
married Edgar Sybilrud, on May 2, 1925 on her parents farm. They farmed
there for a short time before moving to New Richland, Minnesota. They moving
to Waseca, Minnesota in 1942. In 1953 they moved to California and lived
there until Edgar died in 1970.
Mabel moved
back to Minnesota and married Reuben Sybilrud at the New Richland Lutheran
Church Parsonage in 1973. They made their home at St. Olaf Lake east of New
Richland. Reuben died in 1978 and Mabel then moved to the New Richland
retirement center. She moved to Belmond in the early 1980's and lived at the
retirement center for many years before becoming a resident of the Belmond
Health Care Center in 1999.
Mabel will
be remembered by her family for being a loving and devoted wife, mother,
grandmother, and sibling. She loved to bake and was an excellent cook. She
was known for her bars, cookies, and homemade biscuits. She loved to host
family gatherings and Sunday dinners. She always was very active in church,
participating in choirs and ladies groups at Trinity Lutheran in New
Richland, Grace Lutheran in Waseca, Our Savior's Lutheran in California,
LeSeuer River Lutheran near New Richland, and Trinity Lutheran in Belmond.
She was
preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Edgar and Reuben Sybilrud;
brothers, Ralph and Dr. A.M. Larson; sisters, Lillian Engel and Dorothy
Higgins; and twin granddaughters.
Survivors
are her son, Eldred "Buzz" (Elaine) Sybilrud of Locust Grove, Virginia;
daughter, Audrey Jensen of New Richland; sister, Pearl Larson of Belmond;
grandchildren, David Sybilrud of Bellflower, California and Linda (Ed) Boren
and Jeff Sybilrud of Locust Grove; and great-grandchildren Wendy, Sarah, and
Haley.

Shirley Beenen
November 12, 2002
Shirley Anne Beenen, 68, of Belmond, died on Monday, November 4, 2002, at
the
Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.
Funeral services were held on
Friday, November 8, at the United Methodist Church in Belmond, with Rev.
Mike Druhl officiating. Interment was in the Evergreen Cemetery near Clarion.
The Dugger-Ewing Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Music was
provided by Janet Pals, accompanist and Marilyn Janssen and Bernie Urich,
vocalists. Taped selections were by Dan Beenen and Josh Grobin. Honorary
bearers were Jonathan Suntken, Desiree Suntken, Matthew Suntken, Dustin
Beenen, Danielle Beenen, Daren Beenen, Bonny Baker and Shanon Leigh
Bachman. Casket bearers were Jeff Ainger, Kenny Jon Mason, Les Ainger, Rich
Stadtlander, Tom Severe, and Tom Stadtlander. Ushers were Roger Modderman
and Charles Mikesh.
Shirley
Anne Mason, was born on November 3, 1934 at Clarion, daughter of Thomas Eugene
and Clara Matilda (Wenos) Mason. She attended school in Clarion, graduating
in the top 10 of her class of 1953. Following graduation, Shirley worked at
the Wright County State Bank in Clarion and later at First State Bank in
Belmond.
It was at
the Surf in Clear Lake where Shirley met William E. Beenen. On September 28,
1956, Shirley and Bill were united in marriage at the Alexander United
Methodist Church. The couple made their home in Clarion for two years before
moving to Belmond in 1958. Since 1961, Shirley and Bill have lived in the
same home in Belmond, the home they were both so very proud of, and the home
where they raised their three children.
For over 20
years, Shirley was employed at the Belmond Health Care Center in Belmond.
She truly loved her job taking care of the residents. She also bowled,
square danced with Bill, enjoyed flower gardening, and she collected angels
and porcelain dolls. Family and friends were of great importance to Shirley.
She cherished the time spent with her children and grandchildren playing
board games and dominoes, and she always made time for friends. Shirley was
a member of the Belmond United Methodist Church.
She was
preceded in death by her parents; four sisters, Edna Legge, LaVonne
Stadtlander, Isabel Gunderson and Erma Claude; and two brothers, Kenneth
Mason and Walt Mason.
Survivors
are her husband, Bill of Belmond; daughter, Diana (Jim) Suntken of Belmond;
two sons, David (Deb) Beenen of Ankeny and Dan Beenen of Belmond; five
grandchildren, Jonathan Suntken and his friend, Shanon Leigh Bachman,
Matthew Suntken, Dustin Beenen and his fiancée, Bonny Baker, Danielle Beenen
and Daren Beenen; one great-granddaughter, Desiree Suntken; three sisters,
Leona (Tom, Sr.) Severe of Webster City, Donna (Francis) Ainger of Belmond
and
Lila (Richard) Amonson of Clarion; two sisters-in-law, Anna Mae Mason of
Amboy, Minnesota and Evelyn Wooten of Des Moines; two brothers-in-law,
George Legge of Belmond and Albert Claude of Clarion; and numerous nieces and
nephews.

David Horn
November 7, 2002
David Frederick Horn, 78, of Cedar Falls, died on Thursday, November 7,
2002, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday,
November 9, at 2:00 p.m., at the Reese Funeral Home in Newton, with Pastor Lynne
Spencer-Smith officiating. Visitation with the family will be at 1:00 p.m., in
the funeral home. Burial will be in the Newton Union Cemetery.
David was
born on July 12, 1924 in Newton, the son of W. Lacey and Fern (Stephenson)
Horn. He was a 1942 graduate of the Newton High School. David served in the army
in Alaska and India during World War II and attained the rank of corporal.
Following his military service, David enrolled in the tool and die
apprentice program at Maytag. He worked for Maytag in Newton, H & H Machine
Tool and Doerfer Corporation in Cedar Falls, and John Deere in Waterloo. He
retired in 1987.
David
married E. Virginia Rutherford on May 4, 1957. The couple had two daughters,
Lee Ann and Lori Jo. The family lived in Newton until moving to Cedar Falls
in 1967.
David was
preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Virginia; and an infant
daughter, Brenda.
He is
survived by his daughter, Lee, son-in-law, Dirk and grandchildren, Kathryn
and Grant van der Linden, all of Belmond; daughter, Lori of Round Lake
Beach, Illinois; sister, Lois Walker of Newton; brothers, J. Joseph Horn of
Newton and W. Herbert Horn of Marshalltown.

Charles Thomas Campbell

Charles Thomas Campbell, 77, of Alexander, died on Friday, November 8, 2002, at
the Good
Shepherd Care Center.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, November 10, at the Clear Lake
United Methodist Church. Burial was in the Alexander Cemetery with military
honors.
Charles was
born on August 9, 1925 in Mifflin County, Pennsylvania, a son of Samuel J. and
Ethel May (Treweek) Campbell. He served during World War II on a PT boat in
the Philippines.
Charles married Helen Mae Perkins on March 29, 1946 in
Seattle, Washington. They lived in Alexander from 1961 until 1995. Charles
worked as a custodian for the Alexander School District for many years, and
in 1974 he began work for the Iowa Department of Transportation.
He was
preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one brother; and two sisters.
Charles is
survived by five children and their spouses, Gary and Bev Campbell of
Cresco, Karen and Craig Bartholomew of Mason City, Jeanne Yerman of Las
Vegas, Nevada, Jerry and Jean Campbell of Clear Lake and Don and Rona
Campbell of Latimer; 14 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Harry S. Wenig
November 19, 2002
Harry S. Wenig, 100, died on Tuesday, November 12, 2002.
Funeral services were
held at the United Church of Christ in Belmond, on Friday, November 15, with Rev.
Lynne Spencer Smith officiating. Interment was in the Belmond Cemetery.
Music was
provided by Carol Severson, organist and Marilyn Janssen, soloist. Ushers were
Louie Mennenga and George Hinman. Casket bearers were Rob Hill, Austin
Hanson, Jeff Lamfers, Ashley Hanson, Michael Lamfers and Gene Lamfers.
Harry S. Wenig, was born
on February 28, 1902, on his parents farm in rural Hancock,
County near Klemme, the son of John J. and Emma (Schoper) Wenig. He attended
country school in rural Klemme. He later began his life long career as a
farmer. He loved the farm and received great satisfaction from working the
land. He had farmed on the family farm until 1972 when he moved to Belmond.
Harry was
united in marriage to Phyllis Lamfers on February 11, 1972, at the
Evangelical Free Church in Belmond. The couple made their home in Belmond.
Harry continued to farm in Klemme while living in Belmond until 1978 when he
retired.
He enjoyed playing cards, especially 500. He was an avid reader.
Harry and Phyllis enjoyed traveling, and he loved to visit friends and
family. Everyone who knew him well, remember him as a very patient, deep
thinking, quiet man. One of Harry's favorite sayings was, "There's only one
path, uphill, not downhill." He had been a resident of the Belmond Health
Care Center since September 2001.

him in death were his parents; son, Gareth "Gary" Lamfers; four sisters,
Jessie Wenig, Hattie Wenig, Ada Wenig and Gladys Wenig; a brother, Oscar Wenig;
and an infant brother, John Wenig.
Survivors
are his wife, Phyllis Wenig of Belmond; sons, Wayne (Petra) Lamfers of
Belmond, Steven (Patty) Lamfers of Loveland, Colorado, David (Marie) Lamfers
of New Orleans, Louisiana, Vern (Connie) Lamfers of Garner and James Lamfers
and a special friend, Marlys Nuehring of Rowan; a daughter, Helen
(David) Waters of Norwalk, California; daughter-in-law, Chris Lamfers of
Wyoming, Minnesota; 16 grandchildren, Rondi, Rob, Ashley, Austin, Mike,
Jeff, Jason, Jamie, Cory, Elizabeth, Melinda, Gene, Heather, Amanda,
Richard and David, Jr.; 16 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Alma J. Mennenga

Alma J. Mennenga, 92, of Belmond, died on Thursday, November 14, 2002, at
the Belmond Health Care Center.
Funeral services were held on Monday, November
18, at the Immanuel Reformed Church near Belmond, with Rev. Rob Ford officiating.
Burial was in the church cemetery.
Music was
provided by Shirley Kuhlers, organist and a quartet of Crystal Braner, Vaughn Pals,
Jerry Boelman and Gary Steenblock. Honorary casket bearers were the Belmond
Health Care Center staff and special friends. Active casket bearers were
Harold Buseman, Craig Mennenga, Jerry Boelman, Curtis Mennenga, Don Cance
and Marlin Daniels. Ushers were Don Braner and George Wenzel
Alma Dorenkamp was born on September 29, 1910 in Wright County near Meservey, the
daughter of Bene and Emma (Stadtlander) Dorenkamp. She attended Meservey
schools. Alma was confirmed at the Immanuel Reformed Church. In earlier
years of her life she had done housekeeping and cooking for various families
in the area.
She was
united in marriage to George Mennenga at the Immanuel Reformed Parsonage,
rural Belmond, on February 11, 1931. They lived and farmed northeast of
Belmond until 1970 when they retired and moved into Belmond. They moved into
the Belmond Community Apartments in 1989.
Alma was a
member of R.C.W., she taught Sunday School and Catechism for many years and she
enjoyed reading, sewing and playing cards. She was an excellent seamstress
and did alterations until her health forced her to discontinue. Alma and
George traveled to visit their children, they took Sunday afternoon drives
to visit friends, and they hosted dinners for their family and friends. She
was an excellent cook and will be remembered by her grandchildren for making
cookies and caramel corn. Her other specialties were apple and lemon pie.
Alma was a very hard-working person who always put the needs of others
before her own.
Preceding
her in death were her parents; husband, George in 1998; infant son; and
brother, Emil Dorenkamp.
Survivors
are her son, Curtis (Kaye) Mennenga of Ankeny, daughter, Marilyn (Don) Cance
of Vero Beach, Florida, and son Craig (Carol) Mennenga of Osage; one sister,
Esther Bohning of Belmond; sisters-in-law, Alida Dorenkamp of Belmond,
Minnie Mennenga of Belmond and Janet (Jelto) Boelman of Belmond; three
grandchildren, Tracy Mennenga of Mason City, Jennifer Mennenga and special
friend, Eric Douglas of Mason City and Brian Mennenga of Spokane,
Washington; one great-grandson, Dylan Mennenga of Mason City; and many nieces
and nephews.

Barbara L. Morris, 87, of Meservey, died on Thursday, November 14, 2002, at
the Muse Norris
Hospice, Mason City.
Funeral services were held on Monday, November 18, at the Salem United
Methodist Church in Meservey, with interment in the Meservey Cemetery.
Barbara
Lucille Braga, was born on January 31, 1915 in rural Meservey, the daughter of
Walter W. and Anna (Wenzel) Braga. She graduated from the Meservey High School
in 1932.
She married
Mervin Ray Morris on February 10, 1934, and they worked on a farm near Meservey.
Eventually they were able to buy their own farm. In 1958 they moved into
town.
Barbara was
preceded in death by her parents; husband; and two brothers and their wives,
Gerald (Dorothy) and Arthur (Lois).
Barbara is
survived by three children, Carroll (Vicki) Morris of Phoenix, Judy (Harlan) Buseman of Meservey and Sharon (Vernon) Schmale of Meservey; 11
grandchildren, LuAnn (Daryl) Brown, Kay (Jim) Zahn, Rusty (Judy) Morris,
Michael Morris, Michelle (Jeremy) Rojas, Mickey Buseman, Kelly (Kenny)
Hanson, Shelly (Dale) Schultz, Marty (Kristen) Buseman, Monty (Lori) Schmale
and Stacey (Larry) Ubben; and three step-grandchildren, Rick (Angie) Kinseth,
Lori Steenblock and Kim (Brian) Kuester.

Marilyn Beth Erickson

Marilyn Beth Erickson, 70, of Mediapolis, died on Thursday,
November 14, 2002, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington. A
private graveside service will be held later in the Kossuth Cemetery.
Marilyn was born on August 17, 1932 in
Belmond, the daughter of Robert Coleman and Edna Arlie Allaben McNutt. She
married the Rev. Harry H. Feistner in Goodell in 1955. He died in 1970. In
1979 she married Alfred C. Erickson in Mediapolis. Marilyn was a teacher for
many years in southeast Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her
parents; one brother; and one sister.
Survivors include two daughters, Debra Feistner of San Diego, California and Cynthia Kumar of Grand Island,
Nebraska; one son, Barry Feistner of Mediapolis; and one brother, Gene
McNutt of Longmont, Colorado.

Evelyn S. Trego, of Coralville, died on Friday, November 15, at the Mercy Hospital in Iowa
City.

Tenold-Andrews Funeral Home in Belmond, with Rev. Mike Druhl officiating.
There will be no visitation. Interment will be in the Belmond Cemetery.
Evelyn was
born on November 26, 1918 in Higgins, Texas, the daughter of Thomas and Grace
Stone. She married Bern Trego in 1971 in Denver, Colorado where she worked
as an accountant.
Preceding
her in death were her husband; and two brothers, Berlyn and Robert Stone.
Survivors
include her daughter, Shelby Conner of Iowa City; and grandchildren, Jeri
(Steve) Been of Belmond, Lynn and Sidney Biever of Brainerd, Minnesota and
Sean Conner of Clarion.

Larry E. Schimp

Larry E. Schimp, 63, of Belmond, died on Friday, November 15, 2002, at the
Belmond Medical Center under the care of Wright County Hospice.
Funeral
services were held on Monday, November 18, at the St. John Lutheran Church in
Belmond, with Pastor Lowell Halvorson officiating. Burial was in the Belmond
Cemetery.
Larry
Edward Schimp, the son of Edward and Mollie (Erdman) Schimp, was born on March
19, 1939, in Belmond. He was baptized and confirmed at the St. John Lutheran
Church in Belmond. Larry attended schools in Belmond and graduated from the
Belmond High School in 1957.
Larry was
united in marriage with Nancy Smith on September 20, 1958, at the Trinity Lutheran
Church in Belmond. The couple made their home in Belmond. Larry worked for
the Iowa Highway Commission, Laurel Feeds, Kinseth Plumbing and Heating, and
also worked in the meat department at the P&G Grocery store. He had a feed store
in Belmond and sold feed in the area for 27 years.
Larry was
an avid sportsman. He was a fastball softball pitcher. He played for various
teams in north Iowa, including Kinseth Plumbing and Heating, and for
Buttertop. Larry enjoyed officiating football and softball. He liked hunting
and fishing, camping, golfing and horseback riding. He is most remembered
for his love for his family. He very much enjoyed following his children and
grandchildren, encouraging them in their activities.
He is
preceded in death by his parents; step-father, Ernest Kalkwarf;
father-in-law, Bill Smith; and three brothers-in law.
Larry is survived by his
wife, Nancy; two sons, Mike (Tammy) Schimp of Hampton and Marty (Kim) Schimp of
Williams; five grandchildren, Ryan, Eric, Bryce, Kevin and Molly;
mother-in-law, Ina Smith of Belmond; sister-in-law, Sharon (Larry) McMurray
of Ackley; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Alice J. Schroeder, 81, of Klemme, died on Friday, November 22, 2002, at the Muse
Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
Funeral services
were held on Tuesday, November 26, at the United Methodist Church in Klemme. Interment
was in the Concord Township Cemetery near Garner.
Alice
Josephine Schroeder, the daughter of Ben and Carrie (Anderson) Hall, was
born on November 22, 1921, on a farm near Miller. She attended school at Miller
and Garner.
On February
20, 1948, she married Clarence Schroeder at the Ellingston Prairie Lutheran
Church. The couple farmed in Miller, Clear Lake and Hutchins until 1956,
when they moved to California. In 1996, they returned to Iowa and made their
home in Klemme.
Alice is
survived by her husband, Clarence of Klemme; three children, Darlene
Schroeder of Klemme, Charlene Miller of Denver, Colorado and Hans (Sandy) Schroeder of Des Moines; six grandchildren; two sisters, Ruth (Curtis)
Greimann of Garner and Anna Mae (Curtis) Upmeyer of Garner; and a brother,
Orville "Bud" (Josephine "Jo") Hall of Garner.

Bette Ann Nelson, 71, of Waterford, Michigan, died on Tuesday, November 19, in Pontiac,
Michigan.
Funeral services were held on Friday, November 22, at the Simpson-Modetz Funeral Home,

Bette, daughter of Elvin and Ann
Shepherd, was born on January 22, 1931, in Belmond.
She was preceded in death by her father;
brother, Raymond Shepherd; and sister, Karen Shepherd.
Survivors include her husband, Charles
Nelson of Waterford; her mother, Ann Shepherd of Pontiac; son, Craig Nelson;
daughter, Janis White; and two aunts, Betty Lepper of Belmond and Esther
Cooper of Hampton.

Dorothy Martin
November 26, 2002
Dorothy (Sweeney) Martin, 93, of Belmond, died on Saturday, November 23,
2002, at the Belmond Community Hospital.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on
Tuesday, November 26, at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church of Belmond, with
Father David Beckman officiating. Burial was in the St. Francis Catholic
Cemetery. There was a parish vigil service led by Deacon Nick Schmit on Monday
and the rosary service was led by Marion Martin and Regina Lamoureux.
Dorothy
Louise Sweeney, was born to Mildred (Smith) and Earl W. Sweeney on July 24,
1909 at Altoona, the eldest of eight children. She grew up on a farm,
graduated from the East High School in Des Moines and received her B.S. Degree
in 1931 from Iowa State University in Ames. She taught home economics at
State Center High School for three years.
Dorothy was
united in marriage to Albert E. Martin, the son of Earl and Marion Martin of
Belmond, on February 10, 1934. They lived in Marshalltown, Des Moines and
Ames, Iowa, moving to Indianapolis, Indiana and Savannah, Georgia. During
Albert's time of service during WW II, Dorothy returned with her three
children to live on the Martin family farm west of Belmond. During the time
of the war, Dorothy was committed to the local civil efforts in support of
her husband and others abroad.
Upon
Albert's return from the service, the family moved to Ames where their
fourth child was born. They made their home in Ames for more than 40 years,
during which time Dorothy was very involved in both the community and on the
campus at Iowa State University. She was house manager of her sorority,
Alpha Delta Gamma, she was involved in the Easter Seals of Iowa
organization, education of the handicapped, nutritional evaluation in
conjunction with the University's home economics department and with her
children's interests. She enjoyed tailoring and creating many garments and
costumes for her children and others. She enjoyed gardening, interior
design, and entertaining.
Upon
Albert's retirement, they enjoyed extensive travel throughout the world.
More recently her health problems greatly curtailed her activity.
She was
preceded in death by her parents; son, James Earl Martin; one sister; and
two brothers.
Survivors
include her husband of 68 years, Albert of Belmond; daughter-in-law, Sharon
Martin of Mazeppa, Minnesota; three daughters, Marion Martin of Belmond,

Myra L. Paulsen

Myra L. Paulsen, 56, of Garner, died on Sunday, November 24, 2002, at the St.
Marys
Hospital in Rochester.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, November 27, at the Zion Evangelical
and Reformed Church in Garner. Burial will be at a later date in the Evergreen
Cemetery near Clarion.
Myra Lea
Paulsen, the daughter of Myron and Wava (Cooper) State, was born on October 9,
1946 at Clarion. She graduated from the Clarion High School in 1964. She
continued her education at the Iowa Methodist School of Nursing and later
received her BSN through the University of Iowa.
On March
1980, she married Roger Paulsen at her parents home in Clarion. They lived
in Garner. She was director of nursing at the Belmond Medical Center until
1988, in 1990 she began working at the Mercy Medical Center in Mason City and
later became director of surgery. She retired in September 2001.
Myra is
survived by her husband, Roger of Garner; her mother, Wava State of Clarion;
two daughters, Tina (Steve) Antle and their two children, Newton Peterson
and Dana (Chris) Peterson and their three children, of Owatonna, Minnesota;
two brothers, Gary (Terrie) State of Imperial, Nebraska, and Scott (Shirlee)
State of Sulphur Springs, Texas.

Maxine (Smith) Riggs

Maxine (Smith) Riggs,
77, of Phoenix, Arizona, died on Sunday, November 24, 2002.
Funeral services were held
at Phoenix and memorial services will be in Belmond in July, 2003.
Maxine was born near Galt on January 13,
1925, graduated from the Belmond High School and married Gene Riggs of Belmond.
Maxine has a sister, Velma Frohling of
Belmond, and a sister, Leola Sheller of California.
Two children survive.

Gertrude Marie Johnson

Gertrude Marie Johnson, 89, of Belmond,
died on Monday, November 25, 2002, at the Belmond Medical Center.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on
Friday, November 29, 2002, at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Belmond,
officiated by Father David Beckman and Deacon Nick Schmit. Lector was Donna Kopriva
and Eucharistic Ministers, were Mona McLaughlin and Theresa Trager. Altar servers
were Elyse Beenken and Michael Just. Music was provided by Janyce
Kluss, organist and Cyndy McNulty, cantor and Dominique Bockman, soloist.
Casket bearers were Frank Quigley, Tom Quigley, Jr., Pat Quigley, Stephen
Quigley, Eugene Quigley, Nancy Beenken, Theresa Trager, Rose Ellen McGrann,
Susan Followwill and Carol Fletcher. Honorary casket bearers were
Gertrude's grandchildren, Greg Oberhauser, Gretchen Stegman, Todd McConville,
Susan McConville, Jeff McConville, Michelle McConville, Doug McConville,
Spencer Eells, Craig Eells, Dominique Bockman, Ned Johnson, Erin Johnson
and Alex Johnson. Ushers were Hugh Kopriva and Mike McLaughlin. Interment was
in the St. Francis Cemetery
near Belmond.
Gertrude Marie Quigley, daughter of
Francis and Ellen (Nellie) Gaffney Quigley, and granddaughter of Francis and
Mary Sherry Quigley and Thomas and Anne Brady Gaffney, was born on October 8,
1913, in Goodell. She was baptized and confirmed at the St. Mary's Catholic
Church in Goodell, the same church her father and mother were instrumental
in building. She attended country school in Hancock County and graduated
from the Goodell High School in 1931. Gertrude graduated from the Hamilton Business
School in Mason City and later was employed at the Wright County Courthouse
for a time.
Gertrude was united in marriage with
Henry O. Johnson on December 8, 1937, in Belmond. Hank entered the service
in 1944 and received three bronze stars during the following campaigns,
Central European, Rhineland and Ardennes in the European Theater of
Operations. While Hank was serving his country, Gertrude remained in Belmond
caring for the couple's children. Hank was discharged in 1945 and returned
to Belmond.
Gertrude was honored as a Gold Star
Sister following the loss of her younger brother, Raymond who gave his life
when the USS Houston was sunk during WW II. Gertrude was first and foremost
a wife and mother, but was employed from time to time outside the home and
later in the records department at the Belmond Hospital.
Gertrude cherished her husband,
children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and her many friends. She was
a devout member of the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Belmond, the Rosary
Society, one of the founders and a 50-year member of the St. Elizabeth Study
Club, and ACCW-Deanery President. She took great pride in caring for the
altar linens. Gert also was a long-time election commissioner and belonged
to several bridge clubs for over 50 years.
Gertrude was preceded in death by her
parents; seven brothers; and one sister.
She is survived by her husband, Henry;
three daughters, Maryellen Oberhauser of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Jeanne
(Michael) McConville of Des Moines and Bette (Lew) Eells of Cedar Rapids;
three sons, Sam Johnson of Fort Dodge, Ray Johnson and his fiancée, Teresa
and her daughter, Katie of Belmond and Len (Jan) Johnson of Kansas City,
Missouri; 13 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren, Greg and Kim Oberhauser and their son, Garrett, Gretchen and Allen Stegman, Todd, Susan,
Michelle, Jeff and Doug McConville, Spencer and Kris Eells and their
children, Carson, Jenna, and Jackson, Craig and Kelly Eells and their son,
Parker, Dominique and Mike Bockman and their children, Nicholas and Patrick,
Ned and Erin Johnson and Alex Johnson.

George Oliver Legge

George O. Legge, 90, of Belmond, formerly of the Garner and
Clarion areas, died on Monday, November 25, 2002, at his home in Belmond.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, November 30,
2002, at the Belmond United Methodist Church, with Rev. Mike Druhl
officiating. Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery, Clarion.
Music was provided by organist, Dona
Cleveland and vocalists, Dianna Suntken and Dan Beenen. Honorary bearers
were Terry, Rob, Mike, and Lisa Legge, and Annette and Randy Oswald.
Casket bearers were Bob, Tom, Rich, Jerry, Judy, Karen, and Phyllis Stadtlander and Richard Loux.
George Oliver Legge, was born on May 5, 1912,
on his parents farm southwest of Clarion, the son of William Abner and Mary
Margaret (Spencer) Legge. He attended rural schools in the Clarion area.
George married Edna Mae Mason on
December 23, 1933, at the Clarion Methodist Episcopal Church.
George was a farmer and his love of
farming and working the land continued throughout his life. He farmed full
time until his retirement in 1972, and continued in his retirement years as
he assisted his grandson, Mike Legge. He and his wife lived on their farm in
Liberty Township near Garner from 1941-1991 and then moved to Belmond.
George had served as Chairman of the
District #5 Liberty Township School. He served as Chairman and played an
integral role in the development of the Klemme Senior Citizens. He was a
member of Farm Bureau and the Belmond United Methodist Church.
He had
enjoyed ice skating. George loved playing pool and many knew him for his
skill. He was an avid card player and in recent years looked forward to
daily cribbage games with his grandson. He and Edna traveled extensively.
They enjoyed company and looked forward to Sunday afternoons visiting with
family and friends. In later years, George liked to share stories and family
history. A favorite past time was handcrafting wooden keepsake boxes,
jewelry boxes, and gun cabinets.
George will be remembered by many for
being a gentleman who had a big heart and cared about others.
He was preceded in death by his parents;
wife, Edna in 1994; son, James; great-grandson, Matthew Legge; and seven
brothers and sisters.
Survivors include his daughter, Pat
(Andy) Oswald of Fertile; grandchildren, Annette Oswald and her friend, Rollie
O'Donnell and her son, Mason, all of Joice; Randy (Patti) Oswald and
children, Josi and Cody Askvig of Hanlontown; Terry (Sue) Legge and
children, David, Katie, Cris and Charlie of Grimes; Mike (Monica) Legge and
children, Marc, Tom and Jimmy of Garner; Robert (Ruth) Legge and children,
Jennifer, Andrew and Sarah of Garner; and Lisa Legge and husband, Craig
Lassig of Minneapolis, Minnesota; sisters-in-law, Leona (Tom) Severe of
Webster City, Donna (Francis) Ainger of Belmond, Lila and (Richard) Amundson
of Clarion, Evelyn Wooten of Des Moines and Anna Mae Mason of Amboy, Minnesota;
brothers-in-law, Albert Claude of Clarion and Bill Beenen of Belmond.

Michael Houser

Attorney Mike Houser, 42, of Belmond, died on Wednesday, November 27, 2002, while on vacation with
his family in Mexico. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 5, at 10:30
a.m., at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, with visitation on Wednesday from 3-8:00 p.m., at
the Dugger Funeral Home in Belmond. In lieu of flowers, the family
asks that memorials be sent to the Belmond Public Library, Belmond-Klemme
Scholarship Fund #2, Belmond Fire Department, or Holt Children's Services.
A full
obituary will be available later.
Classes at the
Belmond-Klemme Community School have been cancelled for Thursday in honor of
Houser, who was a member of the school board. Teachers will have a work day
before and after Houser's funeral.

Michael Edward
Houser, 42, of Belmond, died on Wednesday, November 27, 2002, in Cozumel, Mexico.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, December 5, at
the St.
Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Belmond, with Father David Beckman and Deacon
Nick Schmit officiating. Burial was in the St. Francis Cemetery. Graveside Law
Enforcement Rites were by the Iowa State Patrol Honor Guard. Alan Mattison
played Taps.
Lectors were Robert Simon and Sheri
Baum. Eucharistic ministers were Jodi Pentico, Jeff Pentico, Julie Jonas,
and Stephen McLaughlin. Gifts were Molly Ann Kuebler, Jennifer Houser, Susan
Houser and Deborah Krienert. Altar servers were Kelsey Mallen and Mackenzie
Mallen.
Music was provided by Janyce Kluss and
Eldoris Bunnell, organists and Cyndy McNulty and Maxine Whitty, cantors and
Gerald Kintzi, soloist.
Ushers were John Fogarty, Kevin
Fogarty, Shawn McLaughlin, Brian Fogarty, Jim Kieffer, Steve Dougherty,
Michael Fogarty, Bill Maske and Randy Dougherty. Signature book was in
charge of Donna
Saylor.

Carroll, John Jonas, Bryan Funke, Thomas Houser, Scott Simon, Tom
Stadtlander and Bart Saylor.
Michael, son of James E. and Betty Clare
(Henderson) Houser, was born on June 11, 1960, in Des Moines. The family moved to
Belmond in 1961. He was a high school exchange student to Chile and an Eagle
Scout. He graduated from the Belmond High School in 1978. Michael attended the
University of Iowa where he was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity and the
University of Iowa Old Gold Singers. In 1983 he graduated with honors from
Marquette University, Milwaukee, with a BA in Interpersonal Communications.
He graduated with a Juris Doctorate Degree from the Drake University Law School
in 1986.
Michael married Holly Simon on October
24, 1987 in Belmond. He practiced law with his father and Gary Berkland at
the same location where Michael's grandfather, Roy A. Henderson, also
practiced law. Michael was finishing his first term as Wright County
Attorney and had been elected to a second term in November 2002.
Michael was serving his third term on
the Belmond-Klemme School Board and was twice President. He was an officer
in the Belmond Jaycees and a recipient of the Outstanding Jaycee Award and
the Distinguished Service Award. He was a retired member of the Belmond Fire
Department and Toastmasters. Michael was a long-time emcee for the July 4th
grandstand show and fireworks display and Bosses' Night Awards Banquet. He
was a member of the selection committee for the North Iowa Area Community
College Performing Arts and Leadership Series and a NIACC Adjunct Professor.
Michael was a member of the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, where he was
a lector, catechist, cantor and member of the parish council.
Michael was a member of the Iowa State
Bar Association, National District Attorneys Association, Iowa County
Attorneys Association, and Wright County Bar Association (Past President).
He was Past President of Young Lawyers Division, ISBA, and Past Chairman of YLD Bridge the Gap Committee. Michael served as a coordinator for the ISBA
Traveling Seminar. He mentored the Belmond-Klemme mock trial team.
Michael was preceded in death by his
grandparents, Roy and Gladys Henderson, and Paul and Dorothy Houser.
Survivors include his wife, Holly; two
children, Brendan, 10 and Megan, 8; and his parents, all of Belmond; two
brothers, John (Jennifer) Houser and daughter, Emma, of Cedar Rapids and Thomas
(Susan) Houser and children, Charlie and Clare of Des Moines; a sister,
Molly Ann (Bruce) Kuebler and children, Barry, Michael, and Clare Marie, of
St. Louis, Missouri; mother and father-in-law, Robert and Verda Simon, of
Des Moines; brother-in-law, Scott Simon of Des Moines; and sister-in-law,
Deborah (Roger) Krienert and children, Grant, Dan, and Ben of LeMars.
