Tena Boelman Dirks

March 5, 2002

Tena Dirks, 86, of Thornton, died on Friday, March 1, 2002, at the Sheffield Care Center.

Funeral services were held on Monday, March 4, at the First Reformed Church of Meservey, with Rev. Rodney Meester presiding. Burial was in the Meservey Cemetery.

Tena Boelman, was born on February 7, 1916 in Meservey, a daughter of Tony and Bernadine Dena (Koenen) Boelman. She was baptized on June 4, 1916 at the First Reformed Church in Meservey and attended Meservey schools.

On May 8, 1936, Tena was united in marriage with Louis Dirks at the Parsonage of the First Reformed Church at Meservey. They made their home in the Thornton and Meservey areas. Tena worked for several years as a cook at a local restaurant. She was a life long member of the First Reformed Church of Meservey, where she had been active in the church circles. She enjoyed sewing and had provided clothes for all her family members.

Tena was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Louis in 1980; three sons, Robert, Louis and Jerry; grandson, Scott Dirks; one sister; and four brothers.

Tena is survived by five of her eight children, Doris Dirks of Thornton, Ronald (Judy) Dirks of Forest City, Karen (Frank) Uhde of Thornton, Jim (Nancy) Dirks of Ankeny and John (Cindy) Dirks of Mason City; 23 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; two daughters-in-law, Elsa Dirks of Republic, Missouri and Ann Dirks of Thornton; one sister, Bertha Trager of Meservey; one sister-in-law, Sylvia Boelman of Mason City; and a brother-in-law, Bob Smith of Mason City.

Gladys Griffen Olthoff

March 19, 2002

Gladys Emma Olthoff, 81, a lifelong resident of the Klemme area, died on Monday, March 11, 2002, at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, March 14, 2002, at the Immanuel Reformed United Church of Christ, Klemme, with Rev. Donna Buckman officiating. Burial was in the Ell Township Cemetery. Music was provided by Diane Stadtlander, organist and Emily Civarelli, soloist. Ushers were Terry Woiwood and Kirk Pearson.

Honorary bearers were Debra Askildson, Teresa Wester, Jennifer Olthoff, Deanna Branstad, Kimberly Abele and Emily Civarelli. Casket bearers were Travis Olthoff, Mark Wester, Quint Askildson, Tad Hartwig, Jeremy Abele and Mike Branstad.

Gladys Griffen, was born on January 22, 1921, on her parent's farm in Hancock County, rural Klemme. She graduated from the Klemme area rural schools.

On February 18, 1944, Gladys married Fred Olthoff at the Immanuel Reformed United Church of Christ Parsonage in Klemme. Following their marriage and Mr. Olthoff's tenure in the service, the couple farmed in rural Klemme. In addition to farming with her husband, Gladys was a homemaker.

After Fred's death in 1965, Gladys moved into Klemme and was the custodian for the Klemme Grain Co-op for 20 years. She also did domestic cleaning for Klemme area residents.

Gladys was active in the Immanuel Reformed Church, teaching Sunday School, Bible School and in the ladies guild. She enjoyed crafting, crocheting, quilting and cooking.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred; sister, Mabel Griffen; and son-in-law, Donald Sellers.

Survivors include her daughters, Kathryn Sellers and Eileen and her husband, Benjie Netland of Klemme; one son, Verlyn and his wife, Kathy Olthoff of Klemme; a sister, Lida Eenhuis of Klemme; 12 grandchildren, Travis Olthoff, Jennifer Olthoff, Tad Hartwig, Mark Wester, Teresa Wester, Jeremy Abele, Kimberly Abele, Quint Askildson, Debra Askildson Mike Branstad, Deanna Branstad and Emily Civarelli; eight great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Elsie Berhow of Kanawha, Fannie Ziegler of Mason City and Betty and her husband, Bill Jones of Britt.

E. W. "Bud" Tiggemann

March 19, 2002

Edwin William "Bud" Tiggemann, age 80, long time resident of the Klemme area and most recently a resident of the Concord Care Center in Garner, died on Monday, March 11, 2002.

Funeral services were held on Friday, March 15, at the United Methodist Church, Klemme, with Pastor Paddy Druhl officiating. Burial was in the Ell Township Cemetery, Klemme. Music was provided by Muriel Schulz, organist. Ushers were Arlyn Waddingham and Raymond Schoenwetter.

Honorary Bearers were Ronald "Boots" Brinkman, Dave Waddingham, Richard Baack, Ardell Flaten, Leonard Kaduce and Henry Kaduce. Casket bearers were Harry Anderson, Ken Blank, Brandon Weiland, Kevin Brunes, Dick Korleski and Ken Weiland.

Edwin was born on January 13, 1922 in Goodell, Hancock County, the son of William and Martha (Heginger) Tiggemann. He attended Klemme area public schools. In his earlier life he worked for various farmers in the area as a farm hand. He also worked for the railroad for a time. He was employed as a carpenter with the Klemme Lumber Yard for 50 years. Edwin's company, "Tiggemann's Portables" built many A-Frame livestock houses and feed bunks for farmers in the North Iowa area. He was a member of the Klemme Lions Club.

He was a resident of the Concord Care Center since November of 1998.

Preceding him in death were his parents; 2 brothers, Robert and Richard; and a nephew, Richard Tiggemann, Jr.

Survivors include his sisters, Esther and her husband, Howard Tulp of Goodell and Velma Smith of Mission, Texas; two sisters-in-law, Fern Tiggemann of Mesa, Arizona and Betty Tiggemann of Lebanon, Missouri; and many nieces and nephews. Also a special friend Ken Weiland of Klemme.

Delbert L. Cornwell

March 19, 2002

Delbert L. Cornwell, 66, of Goodell, died on Friday, March 15, 2002, at the North Iowa Mercy Medical Center in Mason City.

Funeral services were held on Monday, March 18, 2002, at the United Church of Christ, Belmond, with Pastor Lynne Spencer-Smith officiating. Burial was in the Amsterdam Cemetery near Goodell. Music was provided by Marilyn Janssen, soloist and Carol Severson, accompanist.

Casket bearers were, Walter Gatton, Sam Hancock, Zach Hancock, Wayne Mason, Bob Moore, Denny VerHelst, Reuben Wenzel and Victoria Wenzel.

Delbert, the son of Harry and Gladys Buckingham Cornwell, was born on May 13, 1935, in Independence. Delbert grew up in Waterloo, where he attended school. He later worked for the Rath Meat Packing Company. He moved to the Belmond/Goodell area in 1977, where he was employed by Triggs Manufacturing and later Kor-Berts.

Delbert married Wilma Burnett on November 9, 1978, in Waterloo. The couple made their home in Belmond and Goodell.

Delbert was a member of the Belmond UCC Congregational Church. He enjoyed woodworking and TV westerns.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Gladys.

Survivors include his wife, Wilma of Goodell; his father, Harry Cornwell and Virgie of Waterloo; five daughters, Judy Churchill and husband, Douglas of Phoenix, Arizona, Christy Hancock of Nixa, Missouri, Laura Wenzel and husband, Loren of Belmond, Veronica Rains of Oelwein and Michaela Graves and husband, Dennis of Oelwein; two sons, Jeff Cornwell and wife, Donna of Dysart and Kelly Cornwell and wife, Shelly of Independence; 16 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Phyllis, Delores and Peg; and a brother, Larry and wife, Karen.

L. H. Cross

March 27, 2002

L. Harold Cross, 86, died on Wednesday, March 13, 2002, at his home in rural Dows.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 16, at the United Methodist Church in Dows, with Pastor Tony Hershey officiating. Burial was in the Fairview Cemetery in Dows.

Lewis Harold Cross, was born on April 12, 1915 in Goldfield, to John Adam and Clara (Jostes) Cross. He attended elementary school in Goldfield and Eagle Grove. Harold's family then moved to Virden, Illinois, where he graduated from the Virden High School.

On May 17, 1941, Harold married Marjorie Norris at the home of her parents in Rowan. The couple farmed and made their home in several communities including Blairsburg, Rowan and Clarion. In 1956, Harold and Marjorie moved to a farm in rural Dows.

Harold was a member of the Dows United Methodist Church. His hobbies included carpentry and mechanics. He also enjoyed playing cards, dancing and delivering the Sunday Newspaper.

Survivors include his wife, Marjorie of Dows: four sons, Michael and his wife, Evelyn Cross of Hampton, Galyn Cross of Dows, Neil and his wife, Cheryl Cross of Des Moines and Douglas and his wife, Rebecca Cross of Geneseo, Illinois; four sisters, Lucille and her husband, Eldon Schroeder of Beloit, Wisconsin, Ethel Schroeder of Rockford, Michigan, Viola and her husband, Al Piper of Kearney, Nebraska and Evelyn and her husband, Bud Kramer of Minnetonka, Minnesota; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Donald Rodgers

March 27, 2002

Donald Gene Rodgers, 70, died on Monday, March 18, 2002, at his home in Belmond.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, March 21, at the Dugger Funeral Home in Belmond, with Rev. Ginger Renken officiating. Burial was in the Belmond Cemetery, with military rites.

Donald, the son of Earl and Eva Ruggles Rodgers, was born on May 23, 1931 in Carlisle, and attended the Carlisle Schools. In 1949 he entered the military and served in the Korean Conflict. Following his discharge he returned to Iowa where he worked in construction and maintenance.

Donald married Irene Janes on June 14, 1966 in Omaha, Nebraska. Donald enjoyed collecting pop cans and key chains.

Preceding him in death are his parents; a son, Donald Gene, Jr.; two sisters; and one brother.

Survivors include his wife of Center Point; four daughters, Theresa Tolle of Council Bluffs, Brenda Karstens and Joe of Sioux Rapids, Sharon McKittrick of Renwick and Laurie Rodgers of Eagle Grove; two sons, Bill Kauffman and wife, Toby of York, Nebraska and Tim Rodgers of Houme, Louisiana; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; four sisters, Marjorie, Edna, Marie and Doris; and one brother, Wayne.

Mary Louise Thompson Benson

March 27, 2002

Mary Louise Benson, 66, of Burnside, died on Saturday, March 23, 2002, at the Southfield Wellness Community in Webster City. A memorial service was held  on Thursday, March 28, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Burnside, with burial in West Lawn Cemetery in Lehigh.

Mary Louise Benson, was born on September 5, 1935, on a farm in Troy Township in Wright County, the daughter of Frank Emory and Anna Marie Peterson Thompson. Mary attended local rural schools and graduated from the Belmond High School in 1954. She married Robert O. Benson on November 20, 1955 at the Congregational Church in Belmond. They lived in Stratford and Burnside.

Mary was a member of the Immanuel Church in Burnside, the Women of E.L.C.A. and the L.C.W., a member of the Golden Memories Club, Lehigh Area Development, Lehigh River Days, Women's Club and Rebekah Lodge.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert in 1991; and three brothers, Robert, Keith and Harold.

Survivors include three sons, Thomas Benson of Burnside, Robert O. Benson II, of Duncombe and Clark Benson of Stratford; three daughters, Doris Murray of Boone, Katherine Frazier of Burnside and Sharon Benson of Webster City; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Gerald and Millie Thompson of Belmond, Marvin and Margie Thompson of Guthrie Center and Ronald Thompson of Davenport; and many nieces and nephews.

Sadie Nelson Brady

April 2, 2002

Sadie Margaret Brady, 85, of Vista, California, formerly of Iowa Falls, died on Tuesday, March 26, 2002, in California.

Funeral services were held on Monday, April 1, at the St. Mark's Catholic Church in Iowa Falls, with Father Jim Dubert officiating. Burial was in the St. Mark's Cemetery.

Sadie Margaret Brady, was born on February 9, 1917 at Kanawha, to Martin and Caroline Heffle Nelson. She graduated from the Goodell High School in 1935.

On June 10, 1939, she married Joseph Brady at Belmond. They lived in Belmond for a time, were a long time resident of Iowa Falls and Sadie moved to California in 1999. She was the proprietor of Brady's Religious Goods in downtown Waterloo for 25 years.

Sadie was a member of the St. Mark's Church and the St. Mark's Guild.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Joseph; one granddaughter, Annie Oehlert; two sisters, Elma Olson and Margie Nelson; four brothers, Marson, Milo, Claire and Martin, Jr.

Surviving are three sons and daughters-in-law, James and Sandy Brady of Gray Eagle, California, Joseph and LaVerne Brady of New Berlin, Wisconsin and John and Deb Brady of Ocoee, Florida; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and James Furleigh of Fallbrook, California and Patricia and O. T. Belcher of Tolar, Texas; 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; three brothers and one sister, Bob Nelson and Harold Nelson of Belmond, Valva Draper of Las Vegas, Nevada and Roger Nelson of Santa Barbara, California.

Robert "Bob" Lee

April 2, 2002

Robert "Bob" E. Lee, 59, of Mason City, died on Wednesday, March 27, 2002, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 30, at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, with Rev. Dennis Cahill of the Holy Family Catholic Church officiating.

Robert was born on December 14, 1942 in Belmond, the son of Paul and Marian (Studebaker) Lee. He was a 1961 graduate of the Belmond High School. Following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army and become a rifle marksman.

Bob was united in marriage on September 11, 1965, to Patricia Ulrich in Belmond. They made their home in Mason City. Some of his hobbies included watching NASCAR, bowling, hunting, fishing, playing cards, and listening to country western music.

He is survived by his wife of Mason City; two sons, Michael Lee and Jill of Austin, Minnesota and their children, Tyler, Connor, Spencer, Parker and Krystle; and Paul Lee and Miranda of Mason City and their children, Dustin, Duncan, Dallas, Abby and Cooper; one daughter, Kathy Lee-Hudson and Jon of Nora Springs and their children, Holli, Christopher and Andrew; one great-grandchild; mother, Marian Kuper of Belmond; four sisters, Dixie Lamoreux and Larry of Mason City, Diane Reasoner of Decatur, Illinois, Ginger Stille and Mark of Goodell and Betty Lee of Cedar Rapids; one brother, Jim Lee and Sue of California; two aunts, Virginia Studebaker of Belmond and Irene Reiland of Clarion; father and mother-in-law, Richard and Pauline Ulrich of Klemme.

He was preceded in death by his father; stepfather, Harold Kuper; brother, Rick; brother-in-law, Larry Ulrich; and maternal and paternal grandparents.

Grace Stearns

April 9, 2002

Grace Stearns, 95, died on Thursday, March 28, 2002, at the Sogge Care Center in Windom, Minnesota.

The Stearns family moved to Belmond in 1947 when Mr. Stearns worked for Thompson Hybrid.

Survivors are a son, Charles Stearns and a daughter, Muriel Knapp, both of Bella Vista, Arkansas; Ardys Loyd of Long Beach, California; and Norma Bohman of Alexander.
