Beulah E. Ahlstrom

Beulah E. Ahlstrom, 85, of Belmond, died on Monday, August 5, 2002, at
her home in Belmond.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 8, at the
United Methodist Church in Goodell, at 10:30 a.m. The Rev. Paddy Druhl
will be officiating. Visitation will be on Wednesday, August 7, from 5-8:00 p.m., at the Tenold-Andrews Funeral Home in Belmond and will
continue one hour prior to the services at the church on Thursday.
Burial will be in the Belmond Cemetery.
Beulah Estelle Trott, the daughter of Allen B. and
Bessie (King) Trott was born on October 9, 1916 in Dunkirk, Maryland. She
attended the Smithville School.
She was united in marriage to Stanley Ahlstrom on
July 21, 1943 in Baltimore, Maryland. To this union two daughters were
born. In 1945, they returned to the Goodell area and farmed for many
years until their retirement. In 1986, they moved to their home in
Belmond.
Beulah's joy was having the entire family together.
She enjoyed her years of bowling and gardening, playing bingo and cards,
crocheting numerous keepsakes for her family and visiting with the
customers at Sonja's Beauty Shop.
She was a member of the Goodell United Methodist
Church and the Belmond VFW Auxiliary.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband,
Stanley on October 13, 1992; six brothers, Roy, Wilson, Marion, Pete,
Dick and Hamilton; and five sisters, Bertha in infancy, Ellen, Lillian, Hettie and Peggy.
Beulah will be greatly missed by her daughters and
sons-in-law, Barbara and Ted Watne and Sonja and Brett Lobdell, all of
Belmond; her five grandchildren, Troy Watne and his wife, Heidi of
Meservey, Lance Watne and his wife, Melysa of Belmond, Kristina Cook and
her husband, Jamie of Belmond and Ryan and Reece Lobdell of Belmond;
six great-grandchildren, Paige and Kyle Watne, Cody and Brandon Watne
and Jordan and Keyra Cook; also Betty Lou Flora and sister-in-law, Peggy
Trott of Maryland; brothers-in-law, Roy Ahlstrom and his wife, Mildred
of Cedar Rapids and Kurt Ahlstrom and his wife, Betty of Belmond; and many
nieces and nephews.

the Belmond Medical Center.
Funeral arrangements are pending at the Dugger
Ewing Funeral Home in Belmond.

Howard Anderson
August 13, 2002
Howard Dean "Andy" Anderson, 61, died on Tuesday, August 6, 2002.
Funeral
services were held on Friday, August 9, at the United Methodist Church in
Klemme, with Pastor Paddy Druhl officiating.
Organist was Madelyn Priebe and soloist was Lance Arnold.
Honorary bearers were his Winnebago Industries co-workers. Active bearers
were Harold Anderson, Seth Priebe, Ken Weiland, Harlan Block, Bob
Sheriff and Danny Sobeck. Ushers were Arlyn Waddingham and Raymond
Schoenwetter. Private family interment was in the Amsterdam Cemetery near
Goodell.
Howard Dean Anderson, was born on April 19, 1941, on
his parents' farm in rural Hancock County, the son of Elmer and Esther (Harberts)
Anderson. He graduated from the Klemme High School in 1958. Howard had been
a farmer for most of his life, farming on the family farm north of
Goodell. For the past six years, he had been employed in the sawmill
division at Winnebago Industries in Forest City. Howard had also done some
carpentry work over the years.
Howard was united in marriage to Sherri Krueger on
January 14, 1984, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Since their
marriage, the couple had lived and raised their daughters on the farm at
Goodell. During his life, Howard had been a devoted husband and father.
His daughters were his pride and joy. He followed them and supported
them in any activity or function in which they were involved. He never
said "no" to anything that they needed his assistance in doing. He
always placed the needs of others in front of his own.
Howard enjoyed
caring for the animals the family raised on the farm and caring for the many trees he and his wife had planted on the land. A
favorite pastime was going cruising in his 1969 Plymouth convertible. He
was a life long member of the United Methodist Church in Klemme.
Preceding him in death were his parents; infant
sister, Shirley; one sister-in-law, Ann (Mrs. Harry) Anderson; one
brother-in-law, Maynard Smith; and two nephews, Brian Anderson and Paul
Smith.
Those left to cherish the memory of his life
include his wife, Sherri Anderson; three daughters, Brooke,
Hannah and Kaitlin, all of rural Goodell; three brothers, Harlan and his
wife, Loretta Anderson of Alexander, Harry Anderson of Klemme and
Harley Anderson of Arvada, Colorado; three sisters, Ruby Smith of Mason
City, Ila Mae Donnelly and her husband, Dave of Arvada, Colorado and
Leila Wilhelm and her husband Keith of Phoenix, Arizona; and many nieces
and nephews.

Lola Frohling Henn
August 13, 2002
Lola V. Henn, 76, died on Wednesday, August 7, 2002, and funeral services were held
on
Friday, August 9, at the Bethany Reformed Church in Belmond. Interment was
in the Belmond Cemetery.
Lola Virginia Frohling, was born on January 21, 1926,
on the family farm in Franklin County, the daughter of Herman and Anna (Koenen)
Frohling. She attended the Center School near Belmond.
On March 7, 1946, Lola married Lyman Robb at
Meservey. Lola moved to Belmond after her husband died and she worked at
the Belmond Health Care Center.
Lola was wed to Harley Henn on November 27, 1981.
Harley died in 1994.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her
husbands; two sisters, Loretta Frohling and Gladys Day; and one brother,
Donald Frohling.
Survivors are her sons, Roger Robb and his wife,
Yvonne of Goodell and Keith Robb of Fort Dodge; three brothers and
sisters-in-law, Dale and Myra Frohling of Meservey, Merle and Deloras
Frohling of Meservey and Byron and Charlotte Frohling of Waterloo.

Ruth Meinders Menke
August 20, 2002
Ruth Menke, 100, of Mason City, died on Wednesday, August 14, 2002, at the Good Shepherd
Health Center.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, August 17, with interment in the
Memorial Park Cemetery.
Ruth was born on October 12, 1901 in Belmond, the daughter
of Adolf and Abbie (Harberts) Meinders. She attended school in Belmond and
married Lambert Menke in 1924.
Ruth is survived by three daughters, Adeline Perry of
Arizona, Avis Miller of Wisconsin and Phyllis Wright (Roderick) of Mason City;
and a son, Junior "Bud" Menke (Marcia) of Mason City.

Margery Prilipp
August 20, 2002
Margery Lillian Prilipp, 85, of Hampton, died on Saturday, August 17, at the Sheffield
Care Center.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, August 20, with burial in the Wayside Cemetery,
Chapin.
Margaret was born on April 28, 1917 in Anoka, Minnesota.
She was raised in the Thornton area. She married Virgil Prilipp in 1936.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband;
son-in-law; grandson; four brothers; and two sisters.
Survivors include her daughters, Nancy (Robert) Moore of
Alexander and Eva (Larry) Miller of Plainfield; sons, Roger (Jo) Prilipp of
Arizona and Lloyd (Elaine) Prilipp of Bettendorf; foster son, Kenneth Kothe
of Alexander; sister, Rhoda Collison of Arizona; and sister-in-law, Leona Goulty of Belmond; 12 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Lynn Mechem

Lynn Mechem, 89, died on Tuesday, August 20, 2002, at his rural Clarion home.
Funeral services were held on Friday, August 23, with burial in the Evergreen Cemetery, Clarion.
Lynn E. Mechem, was born on November 22, 1912, to Arthur and
Grace Yocum Mechem in Lincoln Township, Wright County. He attended the Clarion
High School and married Inez Hagen on November 24, 1944 in Dows.
Survivors are his wife, Inez; son, Michael (Sue) Mechem
of
Clarion; daughter, Holle (Dennis) Smith of Estherville; and four
grandchildren.

Bernie Wessels

A memorial service was held on Monday, August 26, 2002, for Bernard "Bernie" Wessels,
65, of Sunset, Washington. He died on Saturday, August 17, 2002, at the Sacred Heart Hospital
in Spokane following a heart attack.
Bernie was preceded in death by his father, Luke; and
two brothers, LuVerne and Kenny.
Surviving are his wife of 40 years, Donna Wessels of
Sunset, Washington; two sons and daughters-in-law, Frank and Maryann Roths
of Dallas, Texas and Mike and Shari Roths of Sunset, Washington; two
daughters and sons-in-law, Lea and Gaylon Hergert and Lisa and Tim Blumenshein, both of St. John, Washington.

Joe Burgess

Joseph "Joe" W. Burgess, age 92, a life long resident of the Goodell
area, died on Wednesday, August 28, 2002, at the Oakwood Care Center, Clear
Lake.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, August 31, at the United
Methodist Church, Goodell. The Rev. Paddy Druhl officiated. Interment was in
the Amsterdam Cemetery, Goodell.
Music was provided by Shirley Kuhlers, organist and
Susan Toftey, vocalist. Perry Green was usher.
Honorary bearers were LeRoy Carolus, Jerry Green,
Bernard Halfpop, Jon Green, Dick Barkema, Kermit Smith, Larry Langlitz,
Larry Boller and Paul Shaefer. Casket bearers were Dick Barkema, Mark Barkema, Clay
Kilgore, Keith Barkema, Randall Barkema and Paul Schaefer.
Joseph Burgess, was born on January 25, 1910 in Goodell,
the son of Thomas Robinson and Mabel (Smith) Burgess. He attended and
graduated from the Goodell High School. Joe was a life long farmer on the Burgess
homestead north of Goodell, now a Century Farm.
He married Aline Kilgore on March 9, 1934 at the
Goodell United Methodist church. Following their marriage the couple farmed
and raised their children on the farm. He was a man who loved to work the
land and spend time in the outdoors. His dedication to the outdoors had
shown through during his many years serving on the Hancock County
Conservation Board. In addition to serving on the conservation board, he had
served for a time as Treasurer of the Goodell Fire Department and was a
member of the United Methodist Church.
He very much enjoyed fishing, spending time with his
wife and family, and visiting with friends and strangers. A favorite past
time was building scale model farm wagons.
After retiring from farming, Joe and Aline made their
home in Goodell. They later moved to the Prairie View Housing Community in
Garner where they lived for four years before moving to the Oakwood Care
Center in May of 2002.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Dean
Burgess; sisters, Helma Proper, Betty Barkema and Ina Mae Halfpop; and
brother, Richard Burgess.
Survivors include his wife of over 68 years, Aline
Burgess, of the Oakwood Assisted Living Complex, Clear Lake; son, Thomas Burgess
and daughter, JoAnn Burgess, both of Clear Lake; daughter-in-law, Peggy
(wife of the late Dean Burgess) of Hampton; granddaughter, Kimberly
(Burgess) Loggins and her husband, Jeff of Georgia; and granddaughter, Lynn
Marie (Burgess) Krupp and her husband, Johannes of Sweden; also many nieces
and nephews.

Anita Thompson Whipple

Anita M. Whipple, 80, of Belmond, died on Wednesday, August 28, 2002, at
the Belmond Medical Center in Belmond.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, August 31, at the
United Methodist Church in Belmond, with Pastor Mike Druhl officiating.
Burial was in the Belmond Cemetery.
Anita M. Thompson, was born on December 1, 1921 in Belmond,
to Richard and Matilda (Sjoberg) Thompson. Anita attended school in Belmond
and graduated from the Belmond High School in 1939. She then attended the Hamilton
Business College in Mason City.
On September 29, 1947, Anita was united in marriage to
Gerald Duane (Red) Whipple in Trenton, Missouri. The couple made their home
in Belmond. Anita worked a few years at the P & G Grocery and later at Iowa
Electric Light and Power Company where she worked for 18 years, retiring in
1982.
Anita and Red loved to travel and after retirement they
spent many winters in Las Vegas. She liked to travel to bowling tournaments
with Red.
Anita was a wonderful cook and especially enjoyed baking cookies
for her family and was well known for her chocolate cake. Anita also loved
reading and embroidering dishtowels, doing counted cross-stitch, and
quilting. She was a baseball fan and enjoyed watching the Cubs. She was also
an Iowa Hawkeye fan. Anita wrote poetry, which she kept in a notebook. Anita
was very proud of her grandchildren and they meant the world to her.
Anita was a member of the United Methodist Church in
Belmond.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband,
Gerald in 2001; two brothers; and one brother in infancy.
Anita is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Kathy
and Joe Moore of Plymouth; two sons and daughters-in-law, Bob and Lois
Whipple of Belmond and Dennis and Linda Whipple of West Jordan, Utah; six
grandchildren, Rod, Roxanne, Rick, Jason, Tyler and Jodi; ten
great-grandchildren; mother, Helen Nelson of Belmond; three brothers and
sisters-in-law, Bill and Dory Thompson of Mason City, Duan and Linda
Thompson of Belmond and Jack and Marlys Thompson of Mesa, Arizona; two
brothers-in-law, Leslie (Whimp) Whipple and his wife, Shirley of Belmond
and Jim Wood of Greensboro, North Carolina; three sisters-in-law, Betty
Thompson of Belmond, Ruth Thompson of Florida and Iola Whipple of Mason
City.
