Ernest Mehl

Ernest Mehl, 80, of the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, died on Monday,
July 1, 2002, at the Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m.,
on Friday, July
12, at the Iowa Veterans Home Chapel with his nephew, Rev. Raymond Mehl
officiating.
Born on August 16, 1921, in Kanawha, the son of James
and Dena (Tabenera) Mehl, he received his education at Kanawha.
Among the survivors are his nieces from Belmond, Eunice
Banning, Lois Patterson and Arlene Greenwood.

Velma Hauge
July 9, 2002
Velma Hilda Hauge, died on Thursday, July 4, 2002, at the Belmond Medical Center
Hospice.
Funeral services were held on Monday, July 8, at the Trinity Lutheran
Church in Belmond, with Pastor Rod Hopp officiating.
Organist was Eldoris Bunnell and soloist was Marilyn
Janssen. Ushers were Moo Meints and Loren Bamford. Interment was in the Belmond
Cemetery near Belmond.
Casket bearers were Roland Kinseth, Dwight Tyrrell,
George Eekhoff, Scott Braner, Bill Myers, Bob Cullinan, Jr. and Cecil Mosiman.
Velma Hilda Braner, was born on February 10, 1918, on her
parents' farm east of Belmond, the daughter of Wessel and Magdalene (Mennenga)
Braner. She attended the Belmond High School and graduated in 1935. Velma then
attended and graduated from business college in Chilocothe, Missouri.
Velma married Dale Hauge on her parents' farm on June
28, 1941. The couple farmed and raised their children in rural Belmond.
Velma was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church and past
member of the Immanuel Reformed Church. She worked at the Henderson Law Office, Tomson Insurance, and Bunnell Insurance Agency.
She was a life long homemaker
who enjoyed any activity that included her family. She was a devoted wife,
mother, and grandmother. She especially enjoyed getting together with
everyone on family vacations. Velma and Dale also looked forward to annual
fishing trips to Lake Winnebegosh in northern Minnesota and wintering in Las
Vegas.
Some of her favorite pastimes included reading, playing golf and
bridge. She loved to bake for her family and as her grandchildren always
said, "My grandma makes the best sugar cookies, fudge, and homemade ice
cream."
She was preceded in death by her son, Paul Hauge.
Those who loved her and will always remember her
include her husband of 61 years, Dale Hauge; son, Dennis Hauge of Las Vegas,
Nevada; daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Monte Shaw and their daughters,
Emily and Laura of Chappaqua, New York; daughter and son-in-law, Jean and
Michael McMillin and their son, Corey of Seattle, Washington; granddaughter,
Kim Hauge of Moretown, VI; grandson, Trent Hauge of Indianola, Iowa; one
brother and sister-in-law, Alvin and Crystal Braner; and one sister and
brother-in-law, Phyllis and Bob Cullinan of Belmond.

Luella E. Greenfield

Luella E. Greenfield, 81, of Sheffield, died on Monday, July 8, 2002, at the
Hampton Health Care Center.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, July 11, at the Grace Baptist Church in
Sheffield, with burial at the Alexander Cemetery.
Luella was born on March 2, 1921 near Rockwell, the daughter of Carl and
Helena (Hotts) Schroeder. She attended country schools in the Sheffield
area.
On November 10, 1940, Luella married Frederick W. Greenfield at Lohrville, Iowa. They made their home on a farm in the Alexander area. In
1991 Luella and Fred moved to Sheffield.
Luella was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Ida, Anna and Lena;
and brothers, Carl, George and Hans.
Luella is survived by her husband of Sheffield; son, Steven (Barbara)
Greenfield of Altoona; daughter, Linda (Ron) Herdliska of Ely; brothers,
Walt Schroeder of Thornton, Leo (Nelsine) Schroeder of Sheffield and Gerald
Schroeder of Redlands, California; and sister, Gretchen Amsbaugh of
Cambridge.

Velma Pearl Howieson, 92, died on Tuesday, July 9, 2002, at her home in rural Clarion.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 13, at the United Presbyterian Church in
Clarion, with burial in the Evergreen Cemetery, Clarion.

James W. Mariga

James W. Mariga, died on Monday, July 15, 2002.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, July 18, at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home
in Belmond, with Father David Beckman officiating. Music was provided by Janyce Kluss, organist and Jon Barrett, soloist.
Casket bearers were Larry Dorr, Mel Walden, Bernard Ermels, Rich Kling and Dale Bemrich.
Interment was in the St. Francis Catholic Cemetery near Belmond.
James William Mariga, was
born on December 15, 1905 in Clarion, to John and Anna (VanLanschoot) Mariga.
At the age of six his mother died, followed a few years later by his father.
Jim, his brothers and four sisters were raised by two aunts in Webster City.
St. Thomas Catholic Church in Webster City was built in 1917, and Jim was
one of the altar boys at the first Mass. He graduated from the Webster City High
School in 1924.
After high school, Jim
moved to Clarion and worked for his uncle, John Fagan, as a carpenter. While
in Clarion, he met Josephine Mossman. They were married on September 25,
1928, at the St. John's Catholic Church in Clarion. To this union two children
were born, James E. and Barbara.
In 1938, Jim and his family
moved to Belmond where he became involved in the gasoline business with the
Sinclair Oil Company. He continued in that business until 1967 when he
retired.
Jim and Jo have been
members of the St. Francis Xavier Church in Belmond since 1938, where both have
been active over the years. Jim was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was
also a member of the Belmond Fire Department, and in the 1940's, he was
manager of the Belmond Baseball Tomahawk Team. Jim was also one of the first
Presidents of the Belmond Country Club.
James was preceded in death
by his parents; his brother, Thomas Mariga; and four sisters, Lucy Nilles,
Suzanne Ermels, Helen Horrigan and Catherine Miller.
Survivors include his wife,
Josephine of Belmond; a son, James E. Mariga of Belmond; a daughter and
son-in-law, Barbara (Mariga) and Fred Schiek of Des Moines; two
grandchildren, Mary Jo (Schiek) Youngberg and her husband, Scott of Cedar
Rapids and Patricia Schiek of Minneapolis, Minnesota; great grandchildren,
Heather, Justin and Amanda Youngberg; and many nieces and nephews.

Merlyn L. Townsend
July 23, 2002
Merlyn L. Townsend, 82, died on Sunday, July 21, 2002, at his home in
Belmond, after suffering from heart ailments.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, July 24, at
the
United Church of Christ Congregational in Belmond, with Rev. Lynne
Spencer-Smith officiating. Words of remembrance were given by Ryan Steenblock and Cheryl Wickwire.
Acolyte was Rusty Steenblock. Music was by Carol
Severson, organist and Susan Toftey, soloist. Casket bearers were Dave Barkema,
Jeff Pentico, Matt Bluhm, Steve Walrod, Virgil Draper and Jim Wickwire.
Ushers were George Hinman and Louis Mennenga. Interment was in the Evergreen
Cemetery near Rudd.
Merlyn L. Townsend, the son of Harold and Gladys (Noah)
Townsend, was born on March 29, 1920, in Charles City. He grew up and attended
school in the Floyd County area. Prior to entering the Army, Merlyn was
employed as a welder with the Oliver Tractor Company in Charles City and later
Walsh Manufacturing, also of Charles City.
Merlyn was inducted into the United States Army at Camp
Dodge on January 16, 1943. He served with the 563rd Engineers Boat
Maintenance Battalion as a diesel mechanic and also a rifle marksman, Tec.
4. Merlyn was discharged from the Army on December 29, 1945. Following his
discharge, Merlyn lived in California for a time before returning to Charles
City to farm with his father.
Merlyn was united in marriage with Viola Blunt Uker, on
September 17, 1949, in Yankton, South Dakota. To this union, one daughter
Carol was born. Following their marriage, the couple lived and farmed in the
Floyd County region. Merlyn and Viola moved to Belmond in the spring of
1961. Merlyn raised capons and was known as the largest capon grower in the
state of Iowa. He retired from the poultry business in March of 1982.
Merlyn enjoyed playing cards with Vi and with friends.
He loved to fish and hunt and would often take the camper and boat to
Okoboji or Lake Cornelia. He was a great kidder and really enjoyed his
grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was a member of the United Church of
Christ Congregational.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Gary
Townsend and Don Uker; sister, Naomi Brooks; and brother, Marvin Townsend.
Merlyn is survived by his wife of 52 years, Vi of
Belmond; a daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Bob Steenblock of Belmond, and
their children, Ryan Steenblock and his wife, Arianne of Panora, Iowa, and
Rusty Steenblock and friend, Crystle Asmus of Alexander; a daughter, Janet
Smith of Omaha, Nebraska, and her children, Debbie Zarybnicky and her
husband, Dale of Austin, Texas, Jerry Smith and his wife, Susan of Weeping
Waters, Nebraska, Cheryl Wickwire and her husband, Jim of Charles City and
Kevin Uker and his wife, Linda of Tucson, Arizona; several
great-grandchildren; two brothers, Nolan Townsend of Charles City and Barton
Townsend of Charles City; sister-in-law, Doris Townsend of Rawlins, Wyoming;
and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Fern Matson

Fern Cecelia Matson, died on Friday, July 26, 2002, at the Belmond Care Center.
Funeral services were held on Monday, July 29, at the Tenold-Andrews Funeral
Home in Belmond, with Rev. Michael Druhl of the Belmond United Methodist
Church officiating. Burial was in the Riverside Cemetery in Charles City.
Organist was Maxine Jenison and soloist was Marilyn
Janssen. Honorary
bearers were the Belmond Health Care Center staff and residents. Active
bearers were Rick Kinseth, Larry Kinseth, Rob Courson, Jason Steenblock,
Joey Davies and Dan Goeman, Sr.
Fern Ceclia Bennett, was born on September 3, 1908 in
Charles City, the daughter of Edward R. W. and Nettie (Fitkin) Bennett. She
graduated from the Charles City High School.
Fern was united in marriage to
Louis George Matson on August 7, 1929, at Mason City. Following their
marriage the couple moved to Long Beach, California. After a few years the
couple moved back to Iowa and settled in Charles City. Fern and Louis had
two children, Sharon and Ron.
The couple had enjoyed traveling, playing cards and
spending time with their family. Fern was very active in Rainbow and
Sunshine Girls. She also enjoyed making afghans for family and friends.
Following her husband's death, Fern moved to Mason City, Iowa where she
resided for for many years. There she worked for Dr. Johnson's Orthodontics.
She very much enjoyed activities that included others. She was a long time
volunteer at Mercy Hospital in Mason City, and a member of the YWCA, and the
United Methodist Church.
A favorite past time of Fern's was playing cards
with her friends. She was an avid bridge player. She loved to spend time
with her grandchildren and enjoyed having them stay with her from time to
time.
In 1992, Fern moved to the Belmond Retirement Center where she made
her home for seven years before becoming a resident of the Belmond Health
Care Center at age 90. She loved being out and about with all the other
residents. In her own little way she was funny and always had people
laughing.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Louis
in 1965; and seven brothers and sisters.
Those left to cherish the memory of her life, include
her daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Larry Kinseth of Belmond; a son and
daughter-in-law, Ron and Dixie Matson of Windsor Heights, Des Moines;
grandchildren, Tamera Dorr of Baltimore, Maryland, Dawn and her husband Rob Breza and their children, Parker and Cassandra, all of Chanhassen,
Minnesota, Teresa Matson of Minneapolis, Minnesota and Lori Cekoric and her
husband, Brian and their son, Nathan, all of Portland, Oregon; three
step-grandchildren, Rick Kinseth, Laurie Steenblock, Kim Kuester, all of
Belmond; and eight step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Ira Langlitz

Ira William Langlitz, 90, died on Friday, July 26, 2002.
Funeral services were
held on Tuesday, July 30, at the United Methodist Church in Goodell, with Pastor
Paddy Druhl officiating. Organist was Shirley Kuhlers and soloist was Nancy
Barkema. Interment was in the Amsterdam Cemetery near Goodell.
Honorary bearers were Leroy and Josephine Carolus, Joe
and Aline Burgess, John and Mavis Peterson and Larry and Evelyn Boller.
Active bearers were Leonard Gobeli, Donald Gobeli, Daryl Gobeli, John Lacey,
Dolvin Miland, Leon Langlitz, Tom Langlitz and Russell VerHelst.
Ira William Langlitz, was born on January 21, 1912 at
Goodell, the son of Frederick William and Anna (Rust) Langlitz. He attended
the Goodell School and graduated in 1930.
He married Wava Wilson in 1933.
Ira owned and operated a filling station in Goodell for several years and he
also served as the town mayor during this time. He and his family later
moved to a farm northwest of Goodell, where he farmed until his retirement
in 1976 when he and his wife moved into the town of Goodell. For 25 years
the couple enjoyed wintering in the south.
He enjoyed playing cards,
woodworking and working crossword puzzles. In earlier years he had been
active with the Cub Scouts program and served as a Sunday School Teacher at
the Goodell Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Wava
in October 2001; a daughter, Eileen in 1999; a son, Bill in 2000; a brother,
Elmer and a brother, Forrest in May 2002; a son-in-law; and an infant
grandson.
Survivors are a son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Gail Langlitz
and a son, Kenneth Langlitz, all of Goodell; a daughter-in-law, Sherry
Langlitz of Garner; grandchildren and their spouses, Leon and Denise
Langlitz of Lenexa, Kansas, Kimberly and Clayton Palmquist of West Chester,
Iowa, Rebecca and Jan Tvedt of Britt, Stacey Trager of Britt, Tom Langlitz
of Lenexa, Kansas and Nancy Langlitz of Garner; five great-grandchildren,
Michael Trager, Alex Palmquist, Ashley Langlitz, and Taylor and Tannyn Tvedt.

Lena VanDusseldorp

Lena VanDusseldorp, 85, died on Tuesday, July 30, 2002.
Funeral services were
held on Friday, August 2, 2002, at the United Methodist Church, Thornton, with
Gerald "Red" Haugland officiating. Burial was in the Pleasant View Cemetery,
Thornton.
Music was provided by JoAnn Skyrme, pianist and Terry
Long, vocalist.
Casket bearers were Dan Bowers, Roy Arends, Kenny Pogge,
Adam VanDusseldorp, Lee Aldrich, Troy Bowers, Dale Arends and Lyle Ziegler.
Lena was born 2-1/2 miles west of Alexander on August
12, 1916, the daughter of John Casper "J.C." and Anna (Bode) Arends. She was
baptized in Kanawha by her grandfather, Rev. C. J. Bode. Lena graduated from
the
Alexander High School and went on to attend Iowa State Teachers College in
Cedar Falls.
On July 14, 1938, Lena married Leonard VanDusseldorp at
Bethany, Missouri. To this union four children were born, Lola, Lana, Lew
and Leslie.
The family made their home south of Thornton for 20
years. During this time, Leonard farmed and Lena taught at various
neighboring schools. Lena was also active in the United Methodist Church in
Thornton. She enjoyed a life long passion of writing poetry. One of her
greatest joys was her weekly column in the Southern County Newspaper.
In 1963, Lena, Leonard and Lew moved to Las Vegas,
Nevada, where Lena taught kindergarten for 20 years. During this time, she
earned her masters degree at the University of Nevada.
In 1983, Lena retired from the Nevada school system.
She and Leonard returned to Iowa, where Leonard passed away in 1986. Lena
then taught adult writing classes in Thornton, Belmond and Hampton. She
thoroughly enjoyed her students and will be remembered for her love of
poetry, flair for bright colors-especially red, and cheerful disposition.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband,
Leonard in 1986; infant son, Leslie; daughter, Lola in 1980; grandson, Troy
in 1989; sisters, Edna Tucker and Hazel Benson; brothers, Orville Arends,
Henry Arends, Richard Arends and infant brother, Johnny; sister-in-law,
Marion "Marney" Arends, wife of Henry; and granddaughter-in-law, Candy Roth
in 2001, wife of Earl Roth.
Survivors include her daughter, Lana (Laura) James of
Thornton, Iowa; son, Lew VanDusseldorp and his wife, Peggy of Iola, Texas;
eight grandchildren, Corwin Phipps, Donna Bowers, Earl Roth, Gina Roth,
Adam, Amanda, Alex and Austin VanDusseldorp; six great-grandchildren, Julian
"Mike" Mora, Troy Bowers, Cody Phipps, Clinton Phipps, Jennifer Luther and
Chelsea Roth; two sisters-in-law, Pauline Arends of Alexander and Jennie Arends of Kanawha; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Ivan H. Kreitlow

Ivan H. Kreitlow, 85, formerly of Clarion, died on Tuesday, July 30, 2002, at the
Fonda Nursing Center.
Funeral services were held on August 6 in Fonda, with burial in the
Vernon Township Cemetery near Dows.
Survivors include his wife, Emily; children, Joyce
Hughes of Fonda, Betty Adair and Karen Cristo, both of Texas, Melinda Kreitlow of Colorado, Wendy Barner of Latimer, James Kreitlow of Lake View,
Bert Kreitlow of South Dakota and Charles Kreitlow of Kansas.
