Orville Shahan

July 30, 2002

Orville Smith Shahan, 74, died on Sunday, June 2, 2002, at his home in Federal Heights, Arizona.

Funeral services were held on Friday, June 7, at the Baucke Funeral Chapel in Yuma, Arizona.

He was born on August 25, 1927, to Leander and Mary Carter Shahan.

Orville enlisted in the Merchant Marines, then went to work for Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. for 32 years as a field service engineer, retiring in 1990.

Orville was preceded in death by his parents, Mary and Lee Shahan; four brothers, Stanley, Howard, Edwin and Carole Shahan; two sisters, Lola Puls and Ada Hughes; and daughter, Judith Ann Winard.

Surviving is his wife, Pearl (Chandler) Shahan.

Engle Fekkers

June 4, 2002

Engle Fekkers, 90, of Belmond, died on Sunday, June 2, 2002, at the Mercy Medical Center in Mason City.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday morning, June 5, at the Bethany Reformed Church in Belmond, with Pastor Herm Gruis officiating. Burial was in the Immanuel Reformed Church Cemetery, near Belmond.

Engle, the son of Henry and Gertrude (Gerdes) Fekkers, was born on September 9, 1911, in Franklin County. He attended country schools. Engle began working as a farmhand at the age of 16.

On January 11, 1936, he was united in marriage to Reka Pals at the Meservey Parsonage, with Rev. Kampman officiating. They made their home on a farm near Meservey until 1963 when they moved to Belmond.

Engle kept busy helping his son, Roger farm. He also had a lawn mowing service. He enjoyed fishing.

Engle was a member of the Bethany Reformed Church in Belmond.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Reka; two daughters, Gladys and Gloria; triplet great-grandchildren, Alex, Beau, and Courtney Smith; seven sisters; and two brothers.

Engle is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Janice Fekkers of Belmond; six grandchildren, Jody Knight and her husband, Jess of California, Jenee Sprau and her husband, Scott of Meservey, Brett Lage and his wife, Sue of Meservey, Kim Stromer and her husband, Dave of Garner, Tiffany Smith and her husband, Gary of Urbandale and Todd Fekkers and his wife, Jeri of Meservey; 15 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Marie Timm of Sheffield.

Francis L. Morris

Francis L. (Skeeter) Morris, 87, of Belmond, died on Wednesday, June 5, 2002, at the Belmond Medical Center Hospice Unit.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, June 8, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond, with Pastor Rod Hopp officiating. Music was provided by Marilyn Janssen, vocalist and Eldoris Bunnell, organist. Ushers were Al Olson and Glenn Meints and honorary usher was Loren Bamford.

Casket bearers were Robert Morris, Cory Morris, Mark Galloway, Mike Kelly, Ryan Pross, Dan Meints, Jon Alexandres and Dan Nisley. Honorary bearers were Don Morris, Derl Morris, Lloyd Cunningham, Wallace "Soupy" Cramer and Larry Ziller. Interment was in the Belmond Cemetery.

Francis Luick Morris, was born in Wright County on August 2, 1914, to David and Mabel (Keeling) Morris. He was baptized and confirmed at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond. He attended country school near Belmond and graduated from the Belmond High School with the class of 1932.

He was united in marriage to Viola Soma on September 14, 1938 at her parent's home near Kanawha. Skeeter started farming south of Belmond on the family farm at an early age and later bought the farm. He worked for many years at the Belmond Sales Pavilion and also worked in the 60's and 70's at Mac's Feeder Supply. They continued to farm until retirement in 1984 when he and Viola moved to Belmond. In 1999 they moved into the retirement center in Belmond.

He was an usher at Trinity for many years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, raising greyhounds and Shetland ponies, pitching horse shoes, and working jigsaw puzzles.

Preceding him in death were his wife in June 2000; his parents; uncle, Rob Morris; brothers, Glenn and Dwaine; and grandsons, Chad and Jon Morris.

Survivors are his three children and their spouses, Richard and Sherry Morris of Belmond, Eileen and Craig Pross of Mason City and Dwight and DeLores Morris of Belmond; sister-in-law, LaVonne Morris of Albert Lea; nephews, Derl Morris of Belmond, David Morris of Edmond, Oklahoma and Don Morris of Albert Lea; niece, Karen Hunt of Albert Lea; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Maxine Dorr

Maxine Elizabeth Dorr, 78, a resident of the Good Samaritan Care Center in Albert Lea, Minnesota, formerly of Belmond and Missouri, died on Saturday, June 8, 2002, at the Good Samaritan Care Center.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 13, at 10:30 a.m., at the St. Olaf Lutheran Church west of Belmond, with the Rev. Lowell Halvorson officiating. Burial will be in the St. Olaf Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 12, from 5-8:00 p.m., at the Tenold Andrews Funeral Home in Belmond and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Maxine was born on February 6, 1924, on her parent's farm at rural Mason City, the daughter of Conrad R. and Zada Ellen Sears Link. She attended Mason City Schools and graduated in 1942.

Maxine was united in marriage to Lloyd K. Heggestad in Mason City on August 22, 1942. To this union four children were born, Gary, Marvie, Linda and Dennis. She later married Russell J. Dorr in Belmond. The couple farmed in the Belmond, Kanawha, and Goodell areas. Russell also owned a trucking business which Maxine helped him operate, and she drove livestock trucks for the business.

She also worked for various health care institutions such as Mercy Hospital in Mason City, the hospital in Windom, Minnesota, the Belmond Medical Center, and the Belmond Health Care Center. She was a long time care giver for Vernita and Chloe Thomas in their home in Belmond.

In 1976 Russell and Maxine moved to a farm near Martinsville, Missouri. They lived there until Russell's death in 1986. Then Maxine lived for a time in Rowan before moving to New Hampton, Missouri where her son, Gary Heggestad and his family cared for her.

In 1992, Maxine, along with Gary and family, moved to Glenville, Minnesota. She lived there until 1994 when she became a resident of Good Samaritan Care Center.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husbands, Lloyd Heggestad and Russell Dorr; sons, Dennis and Marvie; and brothers, Clement, Seward and Almon Link.

Survivors include Gary and Darlene Heggestad of Glenville, Minnesota; daughter, Linda Criff of New London; step-daughter, Marlene Wessels of Goodell; sister, Mildred "Mickie" Madson of Mason City; sister-in-law, Mary Belle Link of Casper, Wyoming; brother-in-law, Leland (Adean) Dorr; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, including granddaughter, Donna (David) Basener of Meservey, granddaughter, Linda (Steve) Schrage of Clarion and grandson, John (Tammy) Wessels of Kanawha.

Ruth C. Lynner

June 12, 2002   

Ruth C. Lynner, 86, formerly of Belmond, died on Sunday, June 9, 2002, at her Des Moines home.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, June 12, at the Dunn's Funeral Home with burial at the Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines.

Ruth was born in Remsen. She grew up in Belmond and graduated from Cornell College and Drake University.

She was a member of the St. John's Lutheran Church, P.E.O., League of Women Voters, Wakonda Club, Des Moines National Poetry Festival, and the Friends of the Library in Tarpon Springs, Florida.

She enjoyed reading and golf and spent her winters in Palm Harbor, Florida.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Darwin Lynner; and grandson, Matthew Nevai.

Survivors are her daughters, Lucia Nevai of Maiden Bridge, New York and Nancy Lynner of Providence, Rhode Island; sons, Brian Lynner and Tom Lynner, both of Des Moines; sisters, Nina Courson of Porto Ercole, Italy and Dorothy McNeal of Cedar Falls; and nine grandchildren.

Marie A. Nielsen

June 18, 2002

Marie A. Nielsen, 81, died on Saturday, June 15, 2002.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, June 18, at the First Presbyterian Church in Dows, with Pastor Tony Hershey officiating. Interment was in the Fairview Cemetery near Dows.

Music was provided by Marge Larson, accompanist and Glen Evans, vocalist. Ushers were Bob Larson and Willis Muhlenbruck. Casket bearers were Walt Moore, Bob Draves, Roger Dawson, Borge Anderson, Gerald Boor and Gary Kessel.

Marie was born on January 19, 1921 in Alden, the daughter of Herman and Ella Hartkopp Kienol. She attended country school near Popejoy.

Marie married Andrew Nielsen on November 4, 1945 in Dows. They made their home there where they farmed.

She belonged to the Dows American Legion Auxiliary and helped the Presbyterian Women.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband; and two sisters.

Survivors are her eight children and their spouses, Richard and Lois Nielsen of Thornton, Rodger Nielsen of Madison, Wisconsin, Kenneth Nielsen of Dows, Keith Nielsen of Dows, Gary and Kathy Nielsen of Rowan, Mary and Clint Anderson of Dows, Marlene and Dennis Stearns of Woodburn and Larry Nielsen of San Antonio, Texas; eight grandchildren, Corey, Sarah, Karla, Anna, Laura, Erin, Heather and Kim; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Carl and Norma Kienol of Iowa Falls and Glen and Eileen Kienol of Shelbina, Missouri.

Lew N. Waage

June 18, 2002

Lew N. Waage, 64, of Hampton, died on Monday, June 17, 2002, at his home.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 20, at 10:30 a.m., at the Hampton United Methodist Church, with Rev. Jerry Miller officiating. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 19, from 4-8:00 p.m., at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton. Burial will be in the Amsterdam Cemetery near Goodell.

Lew was born on December 15, 1937 at Goodell, son of Nico and Meriam Zieman Waage. He attended the Goodell High School and then worked at North Central Farm Service, retiring in the fall of 2001.

He attended the Hampton United Methodist Church. His pastimes were fishing, golfing, cribbage and he enjoyed playing softball when he was young.

Preceding him in death were his parents; and brothers, Gene and Fritz.

Survivors are his son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Karen Waage of Latimer; son, Todd Waage of Hampton; daughter and son-in-law, Jill and Kenneth Steele of Carson City, Nevada; sister and brother-in-law, Marlene and Don Suntken of Belmond; sister, LuAnn Hadacek of Mason City; and three grandchildren.

Sharon Bloxham Truelson

June 25, 2002

Sharon K. Truelson, 42, of Laurens, died on Wednesday, June 19, 2002, near Sioux Rapids as the result of an auto accident.

Funeral services were held on Monday, June 24, at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Laurens, with Pastor D. Duane Olson and Pastor James Little officiating.

Casket bearers were Clint Christians, Hale Hawley, Kevin Johnson, Mark Hawley, Cole Lawman and Joe Lawman. Special music was provided by Teresa Watters and Shirley McKienan, organist. Interment was in the Laurens Cemetery near Laurens.

Sharon Kay Bloxham, was born on July 29, 1959 at Clarion, the daughter of Robert and Luci (Anderson) Bloxham. Sharon was baptized and confirmed at the First Lutheran Church in Clarion. She attended the Clarion High School and in 2002 graduated from the Iowa Lakes Community College with a degree of Medical Secretary Specialist.

On September 25, 1981, Sharon married Harold Truelson at Warsaw, Missouri. The couple made their home in Laurens, until the mid 1990's when they moved to Sioux Rapids.

Sharon was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church and she enjoyed gardening.

Sharon was preceded in death by her father; son, Daren; and father-in-law, Henry Truelson.

Survivors include her husband, Harold Truelson of Sioux Rapids; daughter, Megan Truelson of Ames; mother, Lucille Bloxham of Clarion; sister, Betty (Raymond) Stockseth of Belmond; and mother-in-law, Pauline Truelson of Pocahontas.

Edna Eccles

June 18, 2002

Edna Eccles died November 15, 2001 in Portland, Oregon at the Welcome-Home Family Care Center, where she was residing. The care center is operated by her grandchildren, Diane Eccles and Daniel Schmitz. A family service was held  on November 19, 2001, before cremation.

Memorial services will be held at the St. John Lutheran Church in Belmond, on Saturday, June 22, at 1:30 p.m., with Pastor Lowell Halverson officiating. Burial will be in the Belmond Cemetery.

Edna Alma Draves, was born on September 5, 1912 on a farm near Dows, to Emma Louise (Jorges) and Edward Ferdinand Draves. She received her education in the Hanlontown and Rowan school districts.

Edna married Glen A. Eccles on August 22, 1931. The family moved to Belmond in 1940.

She was an active member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, St. John Ladies Aid Society, the Senior Citizens Club, she served as a den mother for many years, and actively supported Scouting. She liked to paint pictures, build furniture, create needlework and she enjoyed her flower garden, music, and dancing.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Glen A. Eccles; one son, Kenneth L. Eccles; a grandson, Jason Eccles; a great-grandchild, Elizabeth Eccles; and five brothers, Arthur, Carl, Clarence, Harry and Anton Draves.

Survivors are two daughters, Margaret Eccles of Portland, Oregon and Betty Rath of North Liberty, Iowa; four sons, Edward of Spokane, Washington, Stanley of Roseburg, Oregon, Cecil of Tucson, Arizona and Dennis of Portland, Oregon; 36 grandchildren; 59 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Karl H. Rietz

Karl H. Rietz, 89, on Rowan, died on Saturday, June 22, 2002, at the Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 27, at 10:30 a.m., at the United Church of Rowan, with Pastor Janet Wearda officiating. Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery near Rowan.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, June 26, from 5-8:00 p.m., at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home in Belmond and one hour prior to services at the church.

Irene Schmidt

June 25, 2002

Irene Schleusner Schmidt, 83, died on Saturday, June 22, 2002, at the home of her daughter, Dianna Erdman in Belmond.

Funeral services were held on Monday, June 24, at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Belmond, with Fr. David Beckman and Deacon Nick Schmit officiating.
Cantors were Rose Speth and Cyndy McNulty. Lector was Donna Kopriva. Organist was Maxine Whitty. Eucharistic Ministers were Regina Lamoureux, Mary Ann Spitler, Pat Schmit and Linda Kehrt. Ushers were Gerald McNulty and Terry Anderson.

Casket bearers were Kim Ingwersen, Jenny King, Scott Tenold, Lisa Conner, Lisa Schleusner, Jeff Erdman, Karla Fischer, Trisha Schleusner, Steve Tenold, Julie Schleusner, Kristi Funk and Todd Schleusner. Burial was in the St. Boniface Cemetery near Garner.

Irene Margaret Spangler, the daughter of John and Lena (Miller) Spangler was born on October 17, 1918, on a farm near Garner in Hancock County. She attended the Garner High School and the Hamilton Business College in Mason City.

She was united in marriage to Paul A. Schleusner on April 2, 1940, at the St. James Catholic Church in Forest City. She worked at several retail businesses in Forest City, as well as Winnebago Industries.

After Paul's death in 1973, she continued to live in Forest City and was united in marriage to Joe Schmidt on October 13, 1979. They lived in Forest City and Port Charlotte, Florida. Joe died on July 15, 1983 and shortly thereafter Irene moved to Belmond.

She enjoyed her many bus trips, bingo on Thursday and was a very faithful member of the St. Francis Xavier Church in Belmond.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husbands, Paul Scheusner and Joe Schmidt; great-grandson, Wesley Ingwersen; sister, Bernadine; and a brother, Kenneth.

Survivors are her daughter and son-in-law, DeEtta and Gary Tenold of Belmond, and their children, Kim Ingwersen and her husband, Mark of Spirit Lake; Dr. Scott Tenold and his wife, Dr. Lisa of Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, Kristi Funk and her husband, Joe of Newton, Dr. Steven Tenold and his wife, Jennifer of Belmond; daughter, Dianna Erdman of Belmond, and her children, Lisa Conner and her husband, Patrick of Cumming, Jeff Erdman and his wife, Teresa Nutt of St. Paul, Minnesota, Karla Fischer and her husband, David of Cedar Rapids; son and daughter--in-law, Dr. Larry and Pat Schleusner of Las Vegas, Nevada, and their children, Dr. Todd Schleusner and his wife, Jen of Las Vegas, Nevada, Dr. Julie Schleusner and her fiancée, Ben Knutson of Las Vegas, Nevada, Jenny King and her husband, Joe of Las Vegas, Nevada, Dr. Lisa Schleusner and her fiancée, Dr. Eric Sakowski of Las Vegas, Nevada.

Marvin Clopton

July 2, 2002

Marvin Durwood Clopton, 84, of Clarion, died on Saturday, June 22, 2002, at the Wright Medical Center in Clarion.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, June 26, at the Clarion Church of Christ, with burial in the Evergreen Cemetery, Clarion.

Marvin was born on February 8, 1918, to parents Sarah Mantz Andrews and Wilford Andrews in rural Churdan. Wilford passed away six weeks later. Sarah married Roscoe Clopton in September of 1921 and the family moved to Clarion where Marvin attended school.

After graduating from the Clarion High School in 1936, Marvin operated the trucking business, which Roscoe had started. In 1939, Marvin hired out as a brakeman on the Chicago Great Western Railroad. In 1941, Marvin was inducted into the United States Army.

On June 26, 1941, Marvin married Phyllis Doctor of Belmond. To this union, three children were born, Mitchell Dean (Mickey), Beverly K. and Debra Ann. Over the next four years the Cloptons moved from coast to coast.

After being discharged from the Army, Marvin returned to Clarion and resumed working for the railroad as a brakeman/conductor. He retired in 1979.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Mitchell Dean; sister, Zatha; and son-in-law, Tim Downs.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis of Clarion; daughters, Beverly Downs of Denison and Debra Brunette and her husband, Brian of Buna, Texas; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Minnie Boelman Pals

July 2, 2002

Minnie Irene Pals, died on Wednesday, June 26, 2002, in Belmond.

Funeral services were held on Monday, July 1, at the Bethany Reformed Church in Belmond, with Rev. Herm Gruis and Rev. Melvin Voss officiating.

Music was provided by Shirley Kuhlers, organist and Jerry Boelman, vocalist. Ushers were Ron Steenblock and Lyle Pals. Interment was in the Belmond Cemetery. Casket bearers were Douglas Pals, Philip Pals, Harold McFadden, Don Munson, Dan Kraft, Heath Jones, Dennis Pals, Ole Olson, James Mabry and Jeremy Bradfield.

Minnie Irene Boelman, was born on June 25, 1916 in rural Belmond, the daughter of Nysco and Fannie (Pals) Boelman. She attended rural school in District 4 of Pleasant Township.

Minnie and Raymond E. Pals, were united in marriage on March 11, 1937, at the Reformed Church Parsonage at Palsville. The couple farmed in the local area for many years, moving to Belmond in the early 1980's. They later became residents of the Belmond Community Apartments.

Minnie was a charter member of the Bethany Reformed Church in Belmond and a life time member of the Bethany Reformed RCW Ladies of the church. She was a very family oriented person, who enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and their families. Minnie also enjoyed being in the company of friends and visiting. Reading was also a favorite pastime. She had been a resident of the Belmond Health Care Center for the past three and one-half years.

Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Norman and Charlotte Pals, Wayne and Marilyn Pals, Gary and Darlene Pals, all of Belmond; daughter and son-in-law, Faye and Clyde Pursell of Kelso, Washington; a brother and sister-in-law, Jelto "Jake" and Janet Boelman of Belmond; sister and brother-in-law, June and Cecil Mosiman of Belmond; a brother and sister-in-law, Roger and Lucille Boelman of Belmond; sisters-in-law, Berniece Pals and Marcele Kottman of Thornton and Mary Pals of Clear Lake; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Hugh Porterfield

June 25, 2002

Hugh Jefferson Porterfield, 96, of Alexander, died on April 22, 2002 in Payson, Arizona. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, June 29, at the St. John Lutheran Church in Belmond, with Rev. Lowell H. Halvorson officiating.

Friends may call at the church, one hour prior to the services on Saturday. Interment will be in the Alexander Cemetery in Alexander.

Hugh Porterfield, was born on November 1, 1905 on a farm near Holton, Kansas, the son of Robert and Edith (Gatewood) Porterfield. He attended rural school and graduated from the Holton High school in 1925.

He later attended citizens military training for two summer sessions. Being the eldest son, he had been the family farm hand for a number of years. The family moved from Holton, Kansas, to southwest Iowa in 1934, and then to Alexander in 1938.

On December 29, 1946, he married Myrtle Reppe at Lily, South Dakota. The couple farmed for 55 years northwest of Alexander.

They were members of the St. John Lutheran Church in Belmond. They had spent the winters in Arizona for many years.

Preceding him in death were his parents; four brothers, Gray, Marion, Dick and Gordon; and a grandson, Joshua.

Survivors are his wife, Myrtle Porterfield; a daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn Ruth and Charles Israel of Des Moines; a son, James Warren Porterfield of Park Ridge, Illinois; seven grandchildren, Joel and Krista Porterfield of Park Ridge, Illinois, Elizabeth, Kathryn, Bethany, Rebecca, and Rachel Israel of Des Moines; a sister, Leota (Mrs. Leland) Biggart of Circleville, Kansas; a brother, Jay G. Porterfield of Talaquah, California.
