CARROLL ROSS "Mickey" LOW
March 24, 1920 - September 2, 2013
Carroll Ross Carroll R. “Mickey” Low, age 93, of Lake Mills, died Monday, September 02, 2013, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday, September 6, 2013, at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills, Iowa, with Pastor David E. Jordon officiating. Burial will take place in Sunset Rest Cemetery, Northwood, Iowa.

Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.

Carroll Ross “Mickey” Low was born on March 24, 1920, in Gordonsville, Minnesota, to parents Manley and Blanche (Wells) Low. He grew up in the Northwood area and attended country school. Carroll was baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Northwood, Iowa.

On January 15, 1938, he was united in marriage with Frances V. Turvold at the First Lutheran Church parsonage. The couple was blessed with four children, and they lived in rural Northwood, where Carroll farmed. In 1964, the family moved to Lake Mills, and Mickey began working at Deluxe Products. Carroll retired in 1983 from the Lake Mills Police Department where he had been employed for 15 years.

He enjoyed going to auctions, camping, playing cards and dining out with family and friends. Carroll and Frances were members of Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills.

Survivors include his children, Darrell (Sharlene) Low of Yale, OK, David Sr. “Sonny” (Loraine) Low of Waseca, MN, and Janell “Sis” (Eldren) Holstad of Spencer, IA; daughter-in-law Carolyn Low of Franklin, KY; 12 grandchildren, Tommy (Cynthia) Low of Stillwater, OK, Terry (Connie) Low of Yale, OK, Tracy Geer of Yale, OK, Tammy (Michael) Prince of Yale, OK, Lynne Holstad of Spencer, IA, Deanna Hewitt of St. Peter, MN, David Low, Jr. of St. Ansgar, IA, Juli (Dean) Redig of Wells, MN, Kimberly (Gary) Sliger of Franklin, KY, Monica Arthur of Franklin, KY, Valerie (Jesse) Curtis of Franklin, KY, and Darrin Low of Franklin, KY; one step-grandchild, Larissa (Kevin) Madewell of Franklin, KY; 37 great-grandchildren, and 9 great-great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by a sister Bernice “Sis” Estes of Northwood, IA; a brother Richard (Marge) Low of Northwood, IA; and two sisters-in-law, DeLoris Low and Pat Low, both of Northwood, IA; as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Carroll was preceded in death by his parents; wife Frances; son Burnell Low; and siblings and their spouses: sisters, Lucile “Cile” (George) Mathews, Pearl (Leif) Weston, and Arlene “Snookey” (Carl) Grosland; and brothers, Vale (Bernice) Low, Clarence “Babe” (Luella) Low, Harold “Honey” (Eleanor) Low, Russell (Dorothy) Low, Allen “Sonny” Low, and Lyle “Bub” Low.


MARGARET L WEINGART
December 25, 1925 - September 6, 2013

Margaret L. Weingart, 87, a lifelong resident of Manly passed away Friday, September 6, 2013 at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood surrounded by her loving family.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30am, Wednesday, September 11, 2013 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 410 N. Broadway Street in Manly. Burial will follow in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Manly.

A visitation with a public viewing will be held from 5 to 7pm, Tuesday, September 10, 2013 at the Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 East Spring Street, Manly where the Rosary will be recited at 5pm.

Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Sacred Heart Catholic Church for the Lift Fund or the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood.

Margaret Louise (Butler) Weingart, daughter of Palmer and Georgina (Knudson) Butler was born in 1925 on Christmas Day in Northwood, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at the Shell Rock Lutheran Church in Northwood and attended country school and graduated with the Northwood class of 1943.

After school, she worked for a short time in Northwood and then at Interstate Power Company in Albert Lea, MN. Margaret was united in marriage to John R. Weingart on November 1, 1952 at the Sacred Heart Rectory in Manly and to this union they would be blessed with three children, Cynthia, Daryl, and Brad. Margaret joined the Catholic Church and she and John were both devoted to the Catholic faith. When her children were young, Margaret was a homemaker and later worked at the Manly State Bank for many years.

She enjoyed bowling, fishing trips up north to Minnesota with the family and friends, playing cards and occasionally the slot machines, which Margaret was quite lucky. Most recently, she has spent much of her time putting many puzzles together. Throughout the years, she has been an avid follower of the Minnesota Twins.

Margaret was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. She was a past member of the Little Flower Guild and the Pride of Del Plane Lodge.

Those left to cherish Margaret’s memory is her daughter, Cyndi (Jack) Morton, Clive, IA; two sons, Daryl (Donna) and Brad (Vicki) Weingart, Alliance, NE; six grandchildren, Andy (Ashley) Weingart, Jessica (Patrick) Mulhern, and Mary Weingart, Alliance, NE, Matt (Jamie) Weingart, Scottsbluff, NE, Kylen and Connor Weingart, Chadron, NE; five great-grandchildren, Ava, Anden, and Ashton Weingart, Alliance, NE and Reese and Lawson Weingart, Scottsbluff, NE; one sister, Shirley Olson, Northwood, IA; four sister-in-laws, Kathryn Horeth, Mason City, Janelle (Mike) Relic, Oceanside, CA, Geraldine Weingart, Junction, TX and Joanne Weingart, Southgate, CA along with several nieces, nephews, and extended family members and friends.

Loved ones who preceded Margaret in death are her husband, John; parents; sisters, Genevieve Methus and Annette Miller; brothers, Melbourne and Earl Butler; sister-in-laws, Carmen Butler, Crystal Schultz, Helen Grefe, Mary Schwartz, Barbara Kelly, Rose Payne; brother-in-laws, Conrad Johnson, Jay Methus, Don Miller, Norman Olson, Joseph, Edward and Melvin Weingart.

GLEN WAGNER
July 29, 1926 - August 16, 2013

Glen LuVerne Wagner, 87, passed away on Friday, August 16, 2013, in Woodinville, Washington.

Glen LuVerne Wagner was born the second of three sons to the late Ida Ellingson and Glen Wagner on July 29, 1926, in Swaledale, Iowa. He was raised in Thornton, Iowa, along with his older brother, Merrill, and a younger brother, Richard (both deceased). The family moved to Aloha, Oregon, in the 1940s. Verne served in the United States Army at the end of WWII. After his father's passing, the family moved to Beaverton, Oregon where Verne spent the majority of his adult life. He worked in the Naval Shipyards of Portland and subsequently for a nursery near his Beaverton home. He also attended Portland State University.

Verne's hobbies included gardening, family genealogy, history, reading and researching his Norwegian roots. He enjoyed visiting his brother Merrill's family in the Seattle area, and communicated frequently with his cousins: Ivan Wagner (Iowa), Rose Ehmke (Minnesota) and Joan Croston (Missouri).

Verne cared for his mother after she broke her hip and also helped take care of his brother Merrill, when Merrill was diagnosed with terminal cancer.

After his brother and sister-in-law's passing in the early 90s, Verne' spent most holidays - and made numerous trips to the Seattle area to be with his brother's family. Verne was very close to his nieces and nephews, along with all of their children.

In 2010 Verne moved to Bothell, Washington to be with his family.

Verne is survived by two nephews, James and Richard Wagner, and three nieces, Kathryn Guzman, Marjorie Wilson and Suzanne Wagner.

A memorial service was held at 5 p.m. on Monday, September 9, 2013, at St. Louise Church in Bellevue, Washington. Glen LuVerne Wagner was buried at Skyline Memorial Gardens m Portland, Oregon.

GRACE ELLEN HUNGERFORD
November 23, 1944 - September 10, 2013

Grace Ellen Hungerford, 68, of rural Manly, Iowa died at home.

Memorial service will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday Sept. 21, 2013 at the Bethel United Methodist Church, Manly, Iowa with Rev. Don Preston officiating. Visitation will be one hour before the service. Inurnment will be in Manly Cemetery, Manly, Iowa. Family suggests memorials to Bethel United Methodist Church Kitchen Fund.

Grace was born Nov. 23, 1944 in Mason City, Iowa the daughter of Mac Willard and Ethel Elizabeth (Hill) Hungerford.

She grew up in the Manly area graduating from North Central High School in 1962. She then attended Westmar College, LeMars, Iowa and graduated from Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa with a bachelor’s degree in Applied Art. She restored several spinning wheels to working order for area museums.
Grace was the assistant librarian at the Manly Library for many years and also worked as a cook at the Manly Care Center and at the Lutheran Retirement Home, Northwood.

She was an expert quilt maker and belonged to several quilting groups. She continued her family tradition of being active at the Bethel United Methodist Church, where her great-grandfather was one of the founders. She was in charge of billboards and helped with many church bazaars. She sang in the church choir for many years and was also a member of the Worth County Women’s Chorus.

Grace is survived by her sister Flora (Norm) Walker, Boise, Idaho; two nieces Beth Green (Jon Orndorff), Long Beach, California and Marjorie Green, San Francisco, California and several cousins and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents Mac and Ethel Hungerford and a brother Charles Hungerford.

HARRY L BARND
September 30, 1919  - September 7, 2013

Harry L. Barnd, 93 of Northwood, formerly of Mason City, died Saturday, September 7, 2013 at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa. Memorial services will be held 2:00 PM Monday, September 16, 2013 at Wesley United Methodist Church, 1405 S. Pennsylvania Avenue with Rev. Steve Hansen officiating. Inurnment will take place in Elmwood St. Joseph Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 2:00 to 4:00 PM Sunday, September 15 at Major Erickson Funeral Home & Crematory, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue. Memorials may be directed to the Harry L. Barnd Memorial Fund.

Harry was born September 30, 1919 in Garner, Iowa the son of Carl and Muriel (Lowe) Barnd. He graduated from Forest City High School in 1936 and Waldorf College in 1938. For several years, he farmed around the Forest City and Garner area. Harry married Irene Severson July 20, 1938. She died in 1970. He then married Ruvella B. Hickman July 28, 1972 at Deer Creek Valley Lutheran Church, rural Northwood. Harry worked for the Milwaukee Railroad for 37, retiring in 1980 as a conductor. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Moose Lodge, Elks Lodge, and the U.T.U.

Harry is survived by his wife, Ruvella of Northwood; daughter, Frances Gaffney of Corrales, New Mexico; son-in-law, Roger Eagen of Wisconsin; 5 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; 4 step sons and spouses, Robert (Becky) Hickman, Russell (Judy) Hickman, Harold (Sally) Hickman, and Marv (Nancy) Hickman; 15 step grandchildren; numerous step great grandchildren; brother-in-law, Orlan Brunsvold.

Harry was preceded in death by his parents, 1st wife, Irene; daughter, Harriet Eagen; grandson, Kevin Eagen; son-n-law, Robert Gaffney; Step-daughter, Carol Ryerson.

VIOLA ALICE THOMPSON
May 20, 1919 - September 8, 2013

Viola Alice Thompson, 94, Northwood, died Sunday, September 8, 2013, at her home in Austin, Minnesota.

A private family graveside service for Viola will be held at the Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood, with Pastor Tom Martin of Bethany Lutheran Church in Kensett officiating.

Those wishing to give a memorial in her memory may wish to direct them to the family in care of Dulcie Thompson, 56731-220th Street, Austin, Minnesota 55912.

Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Ave. South, Northwood, is in charge of the arrangements.

Viola Alice Thompson was born on May 20, 1919, the daughter of Arthur Eugene and Carrie T. (Ennega) Thompson. She received her education the Northwood Community School. She was united in marriage to Russell Telford Thompson on December 15, 1935 in Geneva, Minnesota, and to this marriage three daughters were born; Myrna, Betty, and Dulcie. He preceded her in death on September 14, 1998. After their marriage they helped on Russell’s fathers farm moving to Chatfield, Minnesota, for 19 years, before moving to Fountain, Minnesota in 1962, where she began working for the Woolworth Department Store in Rochester, Minnesota, working at Woolworth for 23 years. Viola also worked at the Apache Mall in Rochester until retiring in 1985, moving to Kensett in 1991. Viola moved to the St. Marks Apartments in Austin, Minnesota in May 2011.

Viola enjoyed going to the Senior Citizens Center in Kensett, flower gardening, sewing, crafts, and quilting, but her great love and enjoyment was her family and grandchildren.

Viola was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Kensett, Kensett Twosome Club, Martha Circle, and the Red Hat Women’s Society member.

Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Myrna A. (Kenneth) Merfeld of Weslaco, Texas, and Dulcie K. (Lynn) Thompson of Austin, Minnesota; eight grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren; as well as many extended family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Carrie Thompson; her husband, Russell Thompson; her daughter, Betty Miller; three brothers, and two sisters, and a son-in-law.

RONALD KEITH SIESTEMA
June 24, 1933 - September 9, 2013

Ronald Kieth Sietsema, 80, of Northwood, died Monday, Sept. 9, 2013, at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood.

A funeral service for Ron will be held Friday, September 13, at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church, 1000 First Ave N., in Northwood, with The Reverend Shirley Will officiating. A flag presentation afforded by the members of VFW Memorial Post 6779 of Northwood will follow the service. Burial will be at Pleasant Hill Cemetery near Ackley, Iowa.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.

Ronald Kieth Sietsema was born June 24, 1933, in Eldora, Iowa, to Harvey and Grace Sietsema. He was baptized and later confirmed at the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Ackley. He graduated from Ackley High School with the Class of 1951. Following graduation he served in the U.S. Navy on board an aircraft carrier, the USS Boxer, during the Korean War. Honorably discharged in 1954, he returned home and began working as a salesman for the Schoeneman Implement and Car Dealership.
On January 31, 1957, he was united in marriage to Sharon Freese of Ackley at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. To this union three children were born: Jeffrey Mark, Chad Reagan and Piper Sheri. After their marriage, Ron and Sharon lived in Ackley until 1961, and then moved to Northwood where they owned and operated Ron’s Drive-In for nine years. Ron worked for Worth Mutual Insurance, and for 35 years he was a Realtor for Van Sabben Realty, and later for Top of Iowa Realty. Ron also worked for Streater’s of Albert Lea as an over-the-road long distance driver for 24 years.

He valued spending time with his family and five grandsons, whom he always called his “Dream Team.” A member of the United Methodist Church in Northwood, he served on several committees. He was a volunteer fireman for the Northwood Fire Department for many years, served on the city council, was a lifetime member of VFW Post 6779, and was a member of the Elks’ Lodge.

Ron enjoyed snow skiing in Colorado until the age of 73, which he was forced to abandon due to his deteriorating eyesight. He enjoyed golfing, and in 1987 he shot a hole-in-one at the Northwood Golf Course.

Ron had a passion for Harley-Davidson motorcycles, and he travelled extensively in the western United States on his H-D Electra Glide. In 2001 Ron and Sharon toured five European countries on motorcycle.
An avid hunter, he hunted pheasants locally, and made many trips to western states to hunt various game. On one such trip he returned home with a black bear which he considered to be his trophy. He also enjoyed horseback riding. All of these activities were treasured all the more when experienced with family and friends.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Sharon “Shari” Sietsema of Northwood; a son, Chad (Christine) Sietsema of Rochester, Minn.; a daughter, Piper (Tony) Manatt of De Witt, Iowa; five grandchildren: Benjamin Sietsema of Minneapolis, Phillip Sietsema of Rochester, Hans (Katy) Sleichter of Boston, Mass., Beau Manatt and Hunter Manatt, both of De Witt. Also surviving are his two brothers, Gordon (Merna) Sietsema of Hampton, Iowa, and Orville (Liz) Sietsema of Eden Prairie, Minn.; as well as other extended family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a son, Jeffrey Mark Sietsema.

JOY HENDRIKSON, JR
June 7, 1928 -  September 2, 2013 

Joy Carleton Hendrikson Jr., 85, of rural Northwood passed away peacefully on Monday, Sept. 2, 2013, at the Stacyville Community Nursing Home, Stacyville, Iowa.

Funeral services for Joy will be on Tuesday, September 10, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. at Our Saviors Lutheran Church, Lyle, Minnesota, with the Rev. Barbara Finley-Shea officiating. Burial will take place in the London-Deer Creek Cemetery in rural Northwood, Iowa. Military honors will be provided by the American Legion of Lyle, Minnesota.

Visitation is scheduled for Monday, September 9, 2013, from 5 until 7 p.m. at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, Highway 65 South, Northwood, Iowa. The family will also greet friends and family one hour prior to the service at the church.

Joy was born June 7, 1928, the only child to Joy and Kittie (Kjersti Sola) Hendrikson Sr., in Austin, Minnesota. Joy was baptized on June 24, 1928, at the Deer Creek Valley Lutheran Church and confirmed there also on September 13, 1942. He spent his life living in Deer Creek Township attending eight years of school in Otranto, Iowa. He graduated from high school in Lyle, Minnesota, in 1946.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1954 through 1955 where he attended Army Lab School and served in Tokyo, Japan, with the United Nations blood bank. After returning from Japan, he started farming and was assigned to the U.S. Army Reserve Medical Unit in Mankato, Minnesota. He received his Honorable Discharge from the U.S. Army Reserve after eight years of service.

On July 3, 1956, Joy married Leila Cottrell at the First Lutheran Church, Glenville, Minnesota. Joy farmed his entire life and especially enjoyed feeding cattle. He was employed at Fieldstone in Northwood for a few years where he truly enjoyed his co-workers. He also was the Worth County Weed Commissioner and did some crop insurance adjusting.

He was a board member of the London State Bank, London, Minnesota, for 21 years. He was also on the Oakland Farmer’s Elevator board for many years. He has been a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Lyle, Minnesota, for over 45 years, serving in many capacities including president for six years. He was a charter member of the Iowa Cattleman’s Association. His greatest joy was spending time with all six grandchildren and attending their many sports and music activities.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Leila; daughter, Margaret (Paul) Pederson of Carpenter, Iowa, and son, James (Shelley) Hendrikson, Lyle, Minnesota. His grandchildren are Nathan (Leann) Pederson, Polk City, Iowa; Kjersti (Adam) Mayer, St. Ansgar, Iowa; and Sam Pederson, Carpenter, Iowa; Martha Hendrikson, Grafton, Iowa; Dallas Hendrikson, Somerset, New Jersey; and Maaike Hendrikson, Somerset, New Jersey. He is also survived by one great-grandson, Kellan Mayer; one sister-in-law, Inez Cottrell; and three nephews: Jack, Mike and Pat Cottrell. He is also survived by numerous Hendrikson and Sola cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, mother-in-law and father-in-law, and brother-in-law, Earl Cottrell.
