LEONARD A TEWS
May 26, 1919 - March 30, 2013

Leonard Arthur Albert Tews was born on May 26, 1919 on the family farm near Myrtle, the son of William and Bertha (Weber) Tews. He attended country school through the eighth grade and then started farming with his father and then in partnership with his brother Leon.  After Leon’s death, Leonard married Yvonne Davis at Deer Creek Valley Lutheran Church on Easter Sunday, April 1, 1956. They were foster parents for a few years and then had a son, Henry, in 1961, Curt in 1967, and adopted a daughter, Holly, in 1969.

Leonard was a lifelong member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and farmed for 70 years.  He and Yvonne farmed together, milking Guernsey cows and raising Chester White pigs, along with a variety of other farm animals.  Leonard was well known for his love of and work with horses. He had a team of work horses he used daily for chores and he enjoyed driving them in local parades as well. Leonard loved farming with his John Deere tractors and especially enjoyed seeding oats in the Spring. He was active on the church council, was a 4H leader for many years, and on various creamery boards.  Leonard and Yvonne were caretakers of Pilgrim’s Rest Cemetery and custodians of the church for several years. He enjoyed showing horses and cattle at county fairs, going to auctions, and to the sale barn. He loved visiting with neighbors and friends, going out to eat, and especially spending time with family.

Survivors include his children Henry (Becky) Tews of rural Myrtle, and Holly (Chuck) Clarke of Glenville; grandchildren Heather (Zach) Wynia, Tyler (Kelsi) Tews, Brittany (Jeff) Heiken, Spencer and Nicholas Krier; great-grandchildren Kail, Karlee, Kasson, and Kray Wynia, and Dylan and Baker Tews; step-grandchildren Mandy (Travis) Schultz, Nancy (Steven) Franck, Chuck Jr. (Lori) Clarke, AJ (Holly) Clarke; step-great-grandchildren Olivia Schultz, Ethan and Kaylee Franck, and Maura, Patrick, Kevin, Darren, and Daria Clarke; brother-in-law Laurell (Clarice) Davis, sister-in-law Margie Davis, and many nephews, nieces, and special cousins.

Leonard was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Yvonne, grandparents, son Curt, sister Esther (Jens) Kirk, brothers Leon, Martin and Lawrence, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Curtis Davis, Emery (Clarice) Davis and Alton (Arliss) Davis.
The family would like to thank the staff of Good Samaritan for the loving care given to Leonard over the years. Memorials are suggested to Bethlehem Lutheran Church and the Pilgrim’s Rest Cemetery.


RONALD W SHOVAN
June 30, 1933 - April 2, 2013

Ronald W. Shovan, a retired Senior Engineering Fellow at Honeywell, passed away Tuesday, April 2, 2013 surrounded by his family. He was 79. Born in Jacksonville, Florida, he was raised in Orange, Massachusetts, where his family owned and ran the White Drum restaurant. He attended St. Olaf College, then joined the US Army and was stationed at Ft. Bliss, Texas and White Sands Proving Grounds.

Post-Army, he completed his studies at St. Olaf. After graduation, he was an engineer for General Electric in Syracuse, New York and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. EG&G in Boston, Massachusetts; and 28 years at Honeywell in Largo, Florida, where he was named a Senior Engineering Fellow.

For several years, he was Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 402, where he guided many Scouts to attain their Eagle rank. He also served as an usher at his church. He enjoyed fishing and classical music, as well as following the US Space Program.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Wanda, his son Mark and wife Tina, and two granddaughters, Jennifer and Jillian, all of Dunedin, Florida, as well as his sister Elizabeth Bissell and husband Doug, of Bennington, Vermont, and a niece Rebecca Bissell, of New York City.

Viewing will be at Sylvan Abbey Funeral Home from 5 PM to 8 PM on Friday April 12, 2013. Funeral service will be at 1 PM at Grace Lutheran Church 1812 North Highland Avenue in Clearwater, Florida on Saturday April 13, 2013.

Interment will be at Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood, Iowa.

LEE TURVOLD

Leallyn (Lee) Keith Turvold went to be with his Heavenly Father on Tuesday April 2, 2013.

Beloved father of Nina Matuszewski and Nicole Liebig. Loving father-in-law of Ted Liebig. Loving grandfather of Aurianna Salem, Miranda Matuszewski, Grant and Forrest Liebig. Loving brother of Gary Turvold, Dianne Cooper, Terry Turvold, and Jeanne Christiansen. Loving uncle, cousin and friend.

He was preceded in death by his parents Jim and Viola Turvold, his infant son Chad, and brother-in-law Mike Cooper.

Lee attended country school in Northwood, IA and graduated in 1963 from Northwood Community High school. He was awarded Most Valuable Player (football) by his team mates 2 years in a row and his number 31# was retired. He attended Luther College on a football scholarship. He married Marcia Levorson in 1966, and graduated from Luther with a BA in Physical Education in 1967. He received his Masters degree in 1969 from Central Missouri State in Safety Education. He spent several years teaching, worked as an insurance agent and broker, was an over the road truck driver, and a home appraiser. He enjoyed working outside especially gardening, cooking, baking, talking politics, listening to Fox radio, traveling, spending time with his grandkids, strong coffee, cigarettes, and was always willing to lend a helping hand to a family member or friend with a home project. He will be missed very much.

Visitation is at the SCHRADER Funeral Home and Crematory, 14960 Manchester Road at Holloway, Ballwin, Friday, 3-7pm. A Memorial Service will be held at 7pm in the Schrader chapel. If desired, contributions may be made to Action for Autism, ARC, or Living Water International. MARLIN B HAGEN

March 9, 1928 - April 16, 2013

Marlin Burton Hagen, 85, Northwood, formerly of Hanlontown, died Tuesday, April 16, 2013, at the Lutheran Retirement Home, surrounded by his family.

A funeral service for Marlin will be held at 2:30 P.M. Saturday, April 20, 2013, at the Grace Lutheran Church in Hanlontown, with Pastor Linda Johnson-Prestholt officiating. Burial will be in the Brush Point Cemetery, rural Hanlontown. Visitation will be held from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. on Friday at the Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Ave. South, Northwood. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to service time on Saturday at the church.

Marlin Burton Hagen was born on March 9, 1928, in Hanlontown, the son of Martin and Ida (Smeby) Hagen. Marlin was baptized and reaffirmed the faith of his baptism through confirmation at the Sion Lutheran Church, rural Lake Mills. He attended Hanlontown community school, graduating from Hanlontown High School in 1946.

Marlin was inducted into the Army on January 19, 1951, in Northwood, and served his country honorably and faithfully in the Korean Conflict with the Fifth Army Infantry until his honorable discharge on October 20, 1952.

He was united in marriage to Donna Paulson on May 13, 1951, at the Lime Creek Lutheran Church, rural Emmons, MN, and to this marriage three children were born Michael, Debra, and Lisa. In 1953, he began his career in farming and farmed for 45 years, 38 years in the Hanlontown area, and after his retirement from farming, they moved to Northwood in 1998. While he was farming, Marlin worked for Deluxe Manufacturing in Mason City and Lake Mills for 17 years, and after his retirement, he worked for the Worth County Conservation Commission for 6 years. Marlin loved farming, the outdoors, John Deere Tractors, and loved to volunteer at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood, and the Northwood Lions Club.

He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and served on the church council, Northwood Lions Club, and Our Buddies VFW Memorial Post #6779 of Northwood.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Donna Hagen of Northwood; his son, Michael (Bonnie) Hagen of Hanlontown; and their children, Ryan (Sarah) Hagen, Lindsey Hagen and Kyle Harrison, Christopher (Ami) Hagen, and Taylor Hagen; daughter, Debra (Jon) Morse of Anchorage, AK, and their children; Holly (Aaron) Johanknecht, Cory Morse, and Matthew (Cheyenne) Morse; and daughter, Lisa Hagen of Northwood; his great-grandchildren, Ella and Avery Johanknecht, Cole and Hailey Hagen, and Adli Hagen; his brother, Raymond (Lavonne) Hagen of Forest City; his sisters-in-law, Avis, Gloria, and Clarice Hagen; as well as many nieces, nephews, many other extended family members and friends.
