Main Street, Lake Mills, IA, 50450, and to the First United Methodist Church, 119-4th Avenue, Coon Rapids, IA, 50058. Roye was born Sept. 23, 1924 in Harrisonville, MO, to the Reverend O.A. and Thelma (Roye) Blaylock. He graduated from Knob Knoster, MO High School in 1942 and had enrolled at Central Missouri State College when he was drafted into the Army of WWII. Among other distinguished awards, Roye, as a part of the 78th Division anti-tank company, was awarded the Bronze Star for actions in the Hurtgen Forest, the Battle of the Bulge, Ardennes Forest; and he was one of the first soldiers to drive a vehicle across the Rhine River pontoon bridge at Remagen, Germany. Upon discharge at the end of the war Roye enrolled in and received a BS Degree in Agricultural Instruction from the University of Missouri in Columbia, MO. On June 2, 1948, Roye was united in marriage to Ruth McDaniel in Knob Knobster, MO. He began teaching Ag classes to veterans in MO before taking a full-time High School Ag Instructor job in Lake Mills, IA and continued to teach veterans in night classes there for several years. He also taught High School Ag in Orange City, IA and Coon Rapids, IA until retirement. He worked for Garst Seed Co. in later years. One of his “signature activities” while teaching was to drive several of his high school FFA students out west to visit large cattle operations and the trip always included a swing by Yellowstone National Park each and every June. Roye is survived by his wife Ruth of 65 years; daughters Diane (David) Hooker of WI, and Debra Morton of MN; son Dean of IA; three granddaughters, Wendi (Brandon) Dandeneau of MN with great- granddaughters Abigail and Mckenzie, Gina (Chris) Riley of WI with great-granddaughter Ella, and Shaundra Morton of MN; and two grandsons, Brandon (Emily) Morton and Brett (Sandy)Morton of MN. Roye was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Lynnel Lane, a brother Dale Blaylock, a special aunt Ruth (Bootsie) Wolfe, a daughter Donna Lamb and grandsons Brian and Joseph Hooker. Roye and Ruth became world travelers having visited all fifty states and all Canadian provinces. They returned to Europe twice to retrace the 78th “Lightening” Division’s progress through England, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. He even allowed Ruth to kiss the Blarney Stone in Ireland. They would rarely miss the semi-annual 78th Division Army Reunions. His favorite places to visit were Yellowstone National Park and Banff, Alberta Canada. Roye was a long time member of several organizations including the American Legion, National Education Association, Iowa State Education Association, FFA and Heritage Travel Club. Roye was very active in local church activities wherever he lived and taught high school and adult Sunday School classes. Roye’s interest in agriculture was especially poignant in his love of animals. He raised beef cattle most of his life and raised sheep for a number of years, but most satisfying to him were his horses. Riding Fancy and Foxy for pleasure, horse shows, parades and saddle club were a part of his avocation for many years. The love of animals was so great that he thoroughly enjoyed passing it on to his children and grandchildren. Thanks to the Bluffview Memory Care staff for their care and concern during the final stages of Alzheimer’s disease.
