JUDY NERLIEN
July 30, 1922 ~ November 5, 2013

Judith “Judy” LaVerne (Tweten) Nerlien was born on July 30, 1922, the daughter of Melvin and Sarah (Hagen) Tweten in Hamburg, North Dakota. Judy was baptized on August 7, 1922, and reaffirmed the faith of her baptism through confirmation on October 10, 1937, at the Hamburg Lutheran Church.

Judy graduated from high school at Maddock, North Dakota. She was united in marriage to Lyle Nerlien on July 2, 1946, at Moorhead, Minnesota, and to this union three sons were born, Lanny, Michael, and Gary.

Judy worked at the Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg, Iowa for twenty years as a Certified Nurses Assistance.

Judy served on the Town Council for several years at Curlew, Iowa, and also served on the Election Board.

Judy enjoyed cooking, and baking, but her greatest love and enjoyment was being a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.
Judy was a devoted member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Mallard, Iowa, teaching Sunday school for several years, and was an active member of the Rebecca Circle at the church.

Judith “Judy” LaVerne (Tweten) Nerlien, 91, of Curlew, died Tuesday, November 5, 2013, at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Those left to cherish her memory are her two sons, Michael (Kathy) Nerlien of Rochester, Minnesota, and Gary (June) Nerlien of Northwood, Iowa; eight grandchildren, Kari (Jim) May of Champaign, Illinois, Daniel Nerlien of Rochester, Minnesota, and Christopher (Christina) Nerlien of St. Paul, Minnesota, Jennifer (Rusty) Wahl of Northwood, Iowa, Adam (Brooke) Nerlien of Clarion, Iowa, Justin Nerlien of Northwood, Iowa, Kevin (Jessica) Truax of St. Paul, Minnesota and Sarah Truax of Rochester, Minnesota; ten great grandchildren, Nicole, Abigail, and Cody Wahl, Shelby, Andrew, and Jamie May, Ana Mahan, Harper and Elliet Nerlien, and Eleanor Truax; daughter-in-law, Sue Hess of Champaign, Illinois; as well as other extended family members and friends. Judy was preceded in death by her parents; husband Lyle Nerlien who died on January 23, 1999, and her brother Ernest Tweten who was killed in World War 2; her son, Lanny Nerlien who died July 5, 2011, and her grandson Matthew Nerlien who died on August 11, 2011. She will be missed but her memory will remain forever.

PEDER ANDERSON

Peder E Anderson, 86, passed away on October 29, 2013 at Renown Hospital, Reno, Nevada, after a lingering illness. Peder was the son of Peder and Nora Anderson, Northwood, both deceased.

He is survived by three sisters, Marie, Tuscon, Arizona, and montie Lou, Wasilla, Alaska; two brothers, Gerald (Jerry), LaVerkin, Utah, and Duane, Amarillo, Texas, as well as nieces and nephews.

Peder served in the US Army in World War II; also, in the Korean War, with Honorable Discharge from bothe services. He was a longtime resident of ther reno area, working in construction and various other jobs.

Peder was buried at the Northern Nevada National Cemetery, Fernley, Nevada, with full military honors presented by the Nothern Nevada Veterans Coalition Honor Guard.

The service was conducted by the Chaplin of the Honor Guard.

Peder will be fondly remembered by many long time residents of the Northwood area.

DWAIN LEROY WEST
November 5, 1927 - November 13, 2013

Memorial services for Dwain Leroy West of Albert Lea, MN, will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, November 16, 2013 at the Bonnerup Funeral Service Chapel. Pastor Richard Spande will officiate. Friends may greet the family one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Hillcrest Cemetery; Albert Lea. Military honors will be accorded by the Albert Lea Area Veterans Groups.

Dwain died Wednesday, November 13, 2013 at Mayo Health Systems Albert Lea. He was 87 years of age. Dwain was born November 5, 1927 in Galena, IL, the son of Walter and Elizabeth (Fox) West. He attended public school in Albert Lea, MN. On August 9, 1957 he was united in marriage to Evelyn Olson at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa.

Dwain had been employed at Olson Manufacturing, Queen Stoves and retired after many years at Bridon Cortège. He served his country in the US Army as a paratrooper while stationed in Japan.

In his free time he enjoyed horses, fishing, hunting, trapshooting, reading and watching sports on TV.

Dwain is survived by his children Carolyn (Larry) Will of Omaha, NB, and Jennifer Lorentzen of Albert Lea, MN. Grandchildren include Jan Frechette, Deborah (James Frederickson) Will, Jodi Johannsen, Matthew (Tammie) Will and Julie Goodmanson. There are 8 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren. One sister survives Isabelle Renter of Lena, IL.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Evelyn, grandson Jay Leroy Lorentzen and great grandson Leighton Will Frederickson.

KAREN BOETTCHER
November 7, 1940 - November 12, 2013

Karen Boettcher, 73, of Northwood died Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2013, at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15, 2013, at Schroeder and Sites Funeral Home, Northwood. Burial will be in Sunset Rest Cemetery, Northwood. 

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at Schroeder and Sites Funeral Home.

Karen was born on Nov. 7, 1940, in Kensett, Iowa, to Milton and Olga (Buckland) Aarback. She was baptized at Elk Creek Lutheran Church, Kensett. Karen graduated from Kensett High School.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Milton and Olga Aarbach; special aunt, Inez Neale; and her husband, Lee Boettcher.

Karen is survived by two sons, Daniel and Clayton Boettcher, both of Northwood; one brother, Richard (Jeanette) Aarback of Kensett; niece, Debra Oakland of Albert Lea, Minn., and one nephew, Matt (Becky) Aarback of Northwood, and many cousins.

SYLVIA EVANS
April 23, 1920 - November 22, 2013

Sylvia A. Evans, 93, Northwood, died Friday, November 22, 2013, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo.

A funeral service for Sylvia will be held 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, November 26, 2013, at the First Lutheran Church, 309 North 9th Street, Northwood, with Pastor Judy Converse officiating. Burial will be in the Concordia Lutheran Cemetery, rural Joice. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service time on Tuesday at the church.

The family would like to suggest that those wishing to give a memorial in her memory may wish to consider memorials to First Lutheran Church or to the Concordia Lutheran Cemetery.

Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Ave. South, Northwood, is in charge of the arrangements.

Sylvia Adene (Brunsvold) Evans, was born on April 23, 1920, in Hanlontown, Iowa, the daughter of Clarence and Mandeline (Hoel) Brunsvold. Sylvia was baptized and reaffirmed the faith of her baptism through confirmation at the Concordia Lutheran Church, rural Joice. She received her education in the Kensett Community School, graduating from Kensett High School. Sylvia also graduated with a bachelor’s degree in education from St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN. After completing her schooling, she taught for 29 and one-half years before her retirement in English and Music, Nemaha, Parkersburg, Waterloo, Northwood, and Forest City, and was the principle in Fertile.

She was united in marriage to James Emerson Evans on September 19, 1948, at the Concordia Lutheran Church rural Joice. He preceded her in death on January 25, 2008.

Sylvia enjoyed reading, crocheting, embroidering, sewing, gardening, playing the piano, and enjoyed attending concerts at N.I.A.C.C. in Mason City.

Sylvia was an active member of First Lutheran Church in Northwood, Sunday school teacher, Alter Guild, a church circle, Mercy Hospital auxiliary and worked at the West Campus at the admitting desk.

Those left to cherish her memory are her nephews and nieces, Brian (Valerie) Ott of Cedar Falls, Steven Ott of Waterloo, Jeff (Holly) Ott of Peoria, Ill, Greg (Susan) Ott of Sun River, OR, David Ott of London, England, Russell (Jane) Evans of Louisville, CO, Mark (Michele) Evans of Faribault, MN, and Douglas (Betty) Evans of Zimmerman, MN; many great nieces and nephews; sister-in-law, Ione Evans of Faribault, MN; brother-in-law, Dale Ott of Waterloo; as well as other extended family members and friends.

Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents; husband James Emerson Evans; and a sister, Inez Ott.

VIRGINIA MARY ELLEN MILLARD
October 30, 1925 - November 17, 2013

Virginia Mary Ellen (Scholl) Millard, 88, Clear Lake, formerly of Manly, died Sunday, November 17, 2013, at the Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake.

A funeral mass for Virginia will be held at 10:30 A.M. Thursday, November 21, 2013, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Rockwell, with Reverend Rodney Allers officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Rockwell. Visitation will be held from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. with a Scriptural Wake Service at 6:00 P.M. on Wednesday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 North 4th Street, Clear Lake. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to service time on Thursday at the church.

Virginia Mary Ellen (Scholl) Millard was born on October 30, 1925, in Rockwell, the daughter of Henry and Elizabeth (Kipper) Scholl. Virginia received her education in the Rockwell schools, graduating from Rockwell High School. She was united in marriage to Raymond Millard on September 7, 1946, at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Mason City, and to this marriage three children were born; LaVern, Barbara Jean, and Beverly. Raymond preceded her in death on April 2, 2008.
After their marriage they began farming in 1946, in the Rockwell area, and continued to farm in the Kensett area until they retired.

Virginia enjoyed traveling, wintering in Weslaco, TX, fishing, cooking, gardening, and gambling; but her greatest love and enjoyment was spending time with her family.

She was a former member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Rockwell, and a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manly.

Those left to cherish her memory are her children, LaVern (Rosemary) Millard of Independence, and Beverly (Darreld “Buzz” Jr,), of Clear Lake; five grandchildren, Jeffrey (Kim) Millard, Raymond (Angela) Millard, Nicholas (Amy) Millard, Darren (Renee) Petersen, and Darreld (Shila) Petersen III. 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild; as well as many nieces, nephews; and many other extended family members and friends.

Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Raymond; daughter, Barbara Jean Millard; five sisters, and one brother.

RAYMOND WAGNER
November 17, 1930 - November 24, 2013

It was the African Message Drums that announced the birth of Ray Wagner on November 17, 1930 in Old Mutare, Zimbabwe at the mission where Africa University is located. Ray's heart no longer has an earthly beat; his soul was united with God on November 24, 2013 in Fargo, ND. Ray was born the first child of Rush and Dorothy (Mason). Ray Wagner's life was a beautiful journey of living as a citizen of the world as the son of a Methodist Missionary. Ray grew up in Africa, Bolivia, Iowa, and after his father's death when he was 16, in Australia. He returned to the U.S. when he was drafted for the Korean War, where he served in the Army stationed at Trieste. His love of classical music soon led him to his greatest love, as he married the girl with the beautiful voice, Mavis Dralla, on June 17, 1956.

Ray attended Iowa State University where he earned his Master’s degree in Sociology. Ray spent 30 years working for the Iowa State and NDSU Extension Services as a 4-H Youth Specialist, 2 for the UMC General Board of Global Ministries in NYC, and 5 as Council Director for the ND UMC Conference. He received many professional honors and national awards. Ray was actively involved with the Fargo Optimist club, performed in 18 Fargo/Moorhead Opera Company productions and gave gallons of blood through United Blood Services.

He was a loving Husband, Father and Papa to his wife, children and grandchildren. Ray's passion was serving God as a volunteer through various ministries of the United Methodist Church. Ray served as a Dakotas Conference UMC Lay Leader, Vice-Chair of the UMC General Board of Higher Education and Ministry, team leader for a Sugar Beet Study trip to Kazakhstan, and Emissary to the Sister Conference in Zimbabwe. Ray also enjoyed spending time with his wife and family at the lake cabin on Buffalo Lake where he particularly enjoyed gardening, tending to the plants, and landscaping.

Ray is survived by his wife, Mavis Wagner; daughters, Miriam (Everett) Vogel, Reece (Alan) Klobe, Theta (Wade) Miller; grandchildren, Leah and Mandy Vogel, Kendra Klobe, Clare and Quinn Miller; brother, David in Australia and sister, Dorothy in Vancouver; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Rush and Dorothy Wagner and his brother, George Wagner.

Memorials can be made to the UMC Dakotas Conference and will be divided between Wesley Acres Camp and Africa University.
