RONALD "RON" KNUDTSON
October 7, 1950 - July 30, 2013

Funeral services for Ronald “Ron” Paul Knutson, of rural Emmons, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at First Lutheran Church in Albert Lea. The Rev. Joel Erickson and the Rev. David Hernes will officiate. Interment will be in the State Line Cemetery in rural Northwood. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Bonnerup Funeral Service in Albert Lea and one hour before the service at the church.

Ron died peacefully at his home on Tuesday, July 30, 2013. He was 62.

He was born on Oct. 7, 1950, in Albert Lea, the son of Harold and Elaine (Egland) Knutson.

Ron graduated from Glenville High School.

He was united in marriage to Denise Monnahan in Gordonsville on July 9, 1971.

Ron farmed for many years and then was a commodity broker for Roach Ag Marketing until his retirement.

He was a member of First Lutheran Church.

In his younger years he enjoyed racing and going to the speedway.

Ron enjoyed truck and tractor pulls, and was especially proud of his yard, where he enjoyed planting trees. He had a great passion for “getting the best deal” and was a tough negotiator.

He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Denise; his parents, Harold and Elaine Knutson of Glenville; two children, Jeremy “Jake” (Ann Marie) Knutson of Glenville and Jaclyn “Jaci” (Jake) Koeppen of rural Northwood; grandchildren, Carsen and Kendra Knutson of Glenville and Alex and Abby Beaty of rural Northwood; brothers, Robert “Bob” Knutson (Nancy) of Glenville and Larry (Sherri) Knutson of Glenville; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Michaela Clark of Forest City, Iowa, Rosy and Howard “Bud” Nelson of Braham, Nancy and Roy Beighley of Gordonsville, Sharon and Ole Rosen of Scarville, Iowa, Linda and Gordon Peterson of rural Glenville and Randi and Steve Chicos of Austin; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Oscar and Clara Egland and Ernie and Tilda Knutson; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Lewis and Ellen Monnahan; sister-in-law, Geri and her husband Leon Kingsbury; and brother-in-law, Richard Clark.


VIRGINIA LEE THOMAS

Virginia Lee Thomas, 82, died on Monday, June 17, 2013, at her sister's home in Pinole, California. No public services will be held, burial will be at Kensett Cemetery alongside the grave of her parents and in the plot of her grandparents, Isaac and Chritina (Holmen) Thon.

Ginny was the first born of Beulah (Thon), 1901-2000, and Carl Leeland Thomas, . 1901- 1981. The family, Virginia, Shirley, Leeland and Gary were raised in Iowa and Albert Lea, Minn., until 1951, when they moved to Richmond, Calif. Virginia graduated from Richmond High School in 1953 and attended Contra Costa College for two years. She ran a Snack Stand at the Richmond Greyhound bus depot for many years. After 1991 she lived in Pinole. And in 1994 she and mom (Beulah) moved in with sister Shirley and husband Emery Phillips.

Ginny loved people, to gamble, to go to horse races and to Reno. Taking photos and traveling to Maine, Texas, Greece and the Midwest to see relatives were fun.

She especially cared about her aunts and uncles and cousins, writing most of them frequently even though the miles separated them.

The Thons - Aunt Anna and Uncle Blair McCready, Uncle Edgar Thon, Aunt Eunice Thon, Aunt Esther and Uncle Sam Cooper, Aunt Della 'and ' Uncle Dale Taylor, Aunt Isabel and Uncle Stanley Lester.

The Thomas side of the family: Uncle Wils and Aunt Alice Thomas, Uncle Harold and Aunt Hava Thomas, Aunt Lena and Uncle Kenny Badker, Uncle Seth and Aunt Leera Thomas, Uncle Leroy and Aunt Lillian Thomas, Aunt lone and Uncle Cyrl Finch.

Ginny was a giving person and she learned to be patient due to her cerebral palsy. We all thought she did well in spite of the "hand she was dealt" and all she had to miss out on, that most of us' take for granted.

Virginia, we will miss you and think of you often. We loved you when you lived, when you died, and we love you now.

Virginia is survived by her sister, Shirley (Emery) Phillips of Pinole, Calif.; their five sons, Andrew of Sacramento, Calif., Emer (Jaylene) and two sons Brent and Drew of Clovis, Calif., Douglas of Pinole, Calif., Donald of Richmond, Calif., and his son Jeffrey at Tinker Air Force Base, Okla. and Tom of Manhattan Beach, Calif.; her brother, Gary (Barbara) Thomas of Turlock, Calif.; Their four sons, Aaron and two sons, Brandon and Cameron of Fairfield, Calif., Shannon of Stockton, Calif., Ethan (Audrey} their children, Calvin, Eloise and Vivian of Ireland, Dylan (Heather) and their daughter, Madelyn of Los Banos, Calif.

She was preceded in death by Carl Leeland Thomas second, 1936-1998, and wife Joan 1936-2010, of Ft. Fairfield, Maine, and two sons, Carl Leeland Thomas third, his son Christopher of Ft. Fairfield, Maine and Scott of Fr. Fairfield, Maine.

JUSTINA MARIE SMITH
March 10, 1983 - August 5, 2013

Justina Marie Smith, 30, of Northwood, died Monday, August 5, 2013, in Northwood.

A memorial service for Tina will be held at 3:00 P.M. Saturday, August 10, 2013, at First Lutheran Church, 309 North 9th Street, Northwood, with Pastor Judy Converse officiating. Visitation will be held from 4:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. on Friday, at the Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Ave. South, Northwood. Following the visitation, cremation will take place with inurnment at a later date.

Tina’s family has established a memorial fund, in memory of Justina Marie “Tina” Smith at the NSB Bank, P.O. Box 288, 900 Central Ave, Northwood, Iowa 50459.

Justina Marie “Tina” Smith was born on March 10, 1983, in Mason City, the daughter of Jerry and Jeanette (Colby) Smith. Tina received her education in the Northwood-Kensett Community Schools.

Tina was a wonderful, loving, and full of life, mother, daughter, granddaughter, sister, aunt, and friend. Tina was always on the go and her heart was as big as the world. Tina loved nature, long walks, flowers, and animals, but most of all her family.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Spencer and Maci Smith that were her life; her parents, Jerry L. Smith, Jr, of Mason City and fiancé Mary Jo Porter of Northwood; Jeanette M. (Scott) Hanson of Northwood; brother, Jeremy (Carrie) Smith of Joice, sister, Jolene M. (Josh) Hennigar of Northwood, brother, Joshua Jaspers of Northwood, step-brother, Mitchell (Jess) Hanson of Northwood; grandparents, Jerry L. (Erma) Smith Sr, of Mason City, and Barbara Gordon of Mason City; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins and many friends.

Tina was preceded in death by her grandparents, David C. and Darlene Colby; an uncle, Jerry Colby, and a cousin, Dustin Colby.


ROSE MARY ELLINGSON
April 18, 1930 - August 7, 2013

Rose Mary Ellingson, 83, of Northwood, died on August 7, 2013, at the Lutheran ' Retirement Home, Northwood. .Memorial service will be on Wednesday, August 14, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, Northwood, with Rev. Judy Converse officiating. A private family burial will be held, at the St. Ansgar Cemetery, St. Ansgar, Visitation will be on Wednesday, starting at 10 a.m. at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, Northwood.

Rose Mary was born on April 18, 1930 ,to John and Marye (Tolsky) Orth. She attended school in Mitchell. On February 4, 1950, she married Merle Ellingson. She volunteered at numerous area organizations.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Merle Ellingson; parents, John and Marye Orth; one brother, John Orth; and one sister, Beffie Schulz.

Rose Mary is survived by two sons, Mike (Diana) Ellingson, Ken Ellingson; three daughters, . Colette, Ann (David) Tyler and Barbara Garcia; seveh grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.


WILMA BERNICE HELGELAND
March 9, 1921 - December 29, 2012

Wilma Bernice Helgeland, 91, Northwood, died Saturday, December 29, 2012, at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood.

A celebration of life service for Wilma will be held at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, July 6, 2013, at the Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Ave. South, Northwood, with Pastor Barbara Wills officiating. Inurnment will be held in the Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service time on Saturday at the church.

According to her wishes, cremation has taken place.

Wilma Bernice (Koerner) Helgeland was born on March 9, 1921, in Le Mars, Iowa, the daughter of Fred and Deane (Wiersma) Koerner. Her baptism took place on June 12, 1921. Her early education took place in Alton and George, Iowa. Following completion of high school, she attended Iowa State Teacher?s College in Cedar Falls for two years and graduated from Drake University.

Wilma was united in marriage to Kermit Helgeland on December 25, 1942, in George, Iowa. They were the parents of two sons Charles and Douglas. They farmed the Helgeland farm until 1959 when they moved into Northwood. Wilma taught school in Manly and Northwood for 40 years until her retirement in 1983.

Wilma was a faithful member of First Lutheran Church in Northwood, served on the Northwood Public Library Board for several years and was an avid reader. She also was a member of Chapter E.S. PEO and the Twenties Club.

Kermit and Wilma spent several winters in Arizona finally moving there in 1989, and returned to Northwood in 2004.

Those thankful for sharing her life are her sons; Charles (Anne) Helgeland of Franklin, TN, and Douglas (Clara) Helgeland of Northwood; four grandchildren; Scott (Stephanie) Helgeland of Jaspers, NY, Sarah Stratton of Monticello, AR, Cinda (Tim) Clay of Naperville, Il, and Vance Helgeland of Northwood; five great-grandchildren; her sister, Dorothy Brandt and her husband Melvin Kerr of Des Moines; her sister-in-law, Dorothy Koerner, of Groveland, CA; as well as many nieces, nephews, and other extended family members and friends.

Wilma was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 64 years, Kermit; her brother, Vance Koerner; and her brother-in-law, Donald Brandt. The family would like to suggest that those wishing to give a memorial in her memory may wish to consider a memorial contribution be made to the Northwood Public Library.
