WILMA HELGELAND
March 9, 1921 - December 29, 2012

Wilma Bernice Helgeland, 91, Northwood, died Saturday, December 29, 2012, at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood.

A celebration of life service for Wilma will be held at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, July 6, 2013, at the Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Ave. South, Northwood, with Pastor Barbara Wills officiating. Inurnment will be held in the Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service time on Saturday at the church.

According to her wishes, cremation has taken place.

Wilma Bernice (Koerner) Helgeland was born on March 9, 1921, in Le Mars, Iowa, the daughter of Fred and Deane (Wiersma) Koerner. Her baptism took place on June 12, 1921. Her early education took place in Alton and George, Iowa. Following completion of high school, she attended Iowa State Teacher?s College in Cedar Falls for two years and graduated from Drake University.

Wilma was united in marriage to Kermit Helgeland on December 25, 1942, in George, Iowa. They were the parents of two sons Charles and Douglas. They farmed the Helgeland farm until 1959 when they moved into Northwood. Wilma taught school in Manly and Northwood for 40 years until her retirement in 1983.

Wilma was a faithful member of First Lutheran Church in Northwood, served on the Northwood Public Library Board for several years and was an avid reader. She also was a member of Chapter E.S. PEO and the Twenties Club.

Kermit and Wilma spent several winters in Arizona finally moving there in 1989, and returned to Northwood in 2004.

Those thankful for sharing her life are her sons; Charles (Anne) Helgeland of Franklin, TN, and Douglas (Clara) Helgeland of Northwood; four grandchildren; Scott (Stephanie) Helgeland of Jaspers, NY, Sarah Stratton of Monticello, AR, Cinda (Tim) Clay of Naperville, Il, and Vance Helgeland of Northwood; five great-grandchildren; her sister, Dorothy Brandt and her husband Melvin Kerr of Des Moines; her sister-in-law, Dorothy Koerner, of Groveland, CA; as well as many nieces, nephews, and other extended family members and friends.

Wilma was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 64 years, Kermit; her brother, Vance Koerner; and her brother-in-law, Donald Brandt. The family would like to suggest that those wishing to give a memorial in her memory may wish to consider a memorial contribution be made to the Northwood Public Library. GENE NACK
August 4, 1936 - July 3, 2013
 
Gene Nack, age 76, of Grafton, died Wednesday, July 3, 2013, at Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 8, 2013, at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton with Pastor Solveig A.H. Zamzow officiating. Burial will be in the Grafton Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Sunday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage and will continue one hour before services at the church on Monday.

Gene was born August 4, 1936, in Osage, Iowa, the son of Carl and Esther (Tesch) Nack. He attended country school and graduated from Grafton High School. Gene married Frances Urbatsch on May 18, 1957, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton. To this union, three children were born. Gene and Frances farmed together in the Grafton area. Frances passed away on November 19, 1992. On August 20, 1998, he married Rose Marie Lewis at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Rock Township. Gene served on the North Iowa Co-op Board and was an active lifelong member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church. Gene enjoyed farming and watching things grow. He also enjoyed fishing, playing cards, trips to Montana, and spending time with family and friends.

Gene is survived by his wife, Rose Marie Nack of Grafton; his children, Brian (Gina) Nack of Grafton, Blair (Michelle) Nack of Square Butte, Montana, and Beth (Larry) Davidson of Des Moines; four grandchildren, Makae, Coya, Cassie and Kylynn Nack; three step-children; five step-grandchildren; sister, Marjorie Schroeder of Osage; brother-in-law, Darrold Walling of Lucan, Minnesota; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Frances Nack; sisters and brothers-in-law, Ruth (Lloyd) Beneke, Gertie (Herb) Kroneman, Alpha Walling; and brother-in-law, Robert Schroeder.

DAVID ALAN AAMODT
January 19, 1953 - June 29, 2013

David Alan Aamodt, age 60 of Mediapolis, died Saturday June 29, 2013 at Great River Medical Center.  The son of Carroll and Maynis (Larson) Aamodt, he was born January 19, 1953 at Albert Lea, Minnesota.  On July 30, 1988 he married Peggy Lindeen in Burlington.  He was a graduate of Northwood, Iowa High School and the University of Northern Iowa.  He was a teacher, teaching in the MediapolisSchool  for over 35 years.  He was a coach and took over management of the Mediapolis swimming pool this year. He was an active member of the MediapolisFirstUnitedMethodistChurch.  He led bible study and was worship leader.  He loved to sing and provided music for many occasions.
 
Survivors include;  his wife Peggy of Mediapolis; three sons, Ryan, Nate and Tyler all of Mediapolis; his Mother of Northwood, Iowa; two brothers, Craig of Steward, Illinois and Robert of Lake Mills, Iowa; one sister, Lora Aamodt of Austin, Minnesota;
 
He was preceded in death by his Father, an infant sister and a sister in law Linda.
 
The funeral service will be Wednesday July 3, 2013 at the MediapolisElementary School Gym at 10:30 a.m., with Rev. Jeff Kodis, Rev. John Gaulke, and Wally Reynolds officiating.  Interment will be in the KossuthCemetery.
Friends may call at the school gym on Tuesday from 4-7:00 p.m. where the family will be present .
Memorials have been established for the Mediapolis Community Theatre, Special Needs Foundation, and Mediapolis Youth Group.

ALBERT WILLIAM ADAMS
July 25, 1943 - July 12, 2013

Albert “Al” William Adams, 69, Northwood, died Friday, July 12, 2013, at his home.

A funeral service for Al will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, July 19, 2013, at the Elk Creek Lutheran Church, 4108 Killdeer Ave, Kensett, with Pastor Tom Martin officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. on Thursday, at the Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Ave. South, Northwood. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to service time on Friday at the church. Following the funeral service, cremation will be accorded with private interment services will be Saturday, August 3rd, in the London Deer Creek Cemetery, rural Northwood, near the graves of his beloved Mother and Father..

Al Adams, age 69, died peacefully on July 12, 2013 at his home in Northwood, just days shy of his 70th birthday. Albert William Adams was born on July 25, 1943, in Northwood, Iowa at the Anderson Rest Home, the 6th child of Frank Sr. and Henrietta (Abrahams) Adams. He was baptized and confirmed at Deer Creek Valley Lutheran Church in rural Northwood. He was a member of Elk Creek Lutheran Church in rural Kensett. Al attended school in Northwood, Iowa, graduating in 1961 from Northwood-Kensett High School, where he was active in sports and FFA. Al was the recipient of the Lee Reyerson Award in 1961. Al received his Associate of Arts degree from Mason City Junior College in 1963, and his Bachelor of Science degree from Iowa State University in Ames in 1966. He received a degree in pre-veterinary medicine from ISU in 1968.

Al taught school in DeWitt, Iowa, and Arlington Heights, Illinois near Chicago. In 1974, he returned to Northwood to teach at Northwood-Kensett Community Schools as the Vocational Agriculture instructor in the high school. In 1975, the Northwood Jaycees named him as the ‘Outstanding Young Educator.' As the Vo-Ag instructor, Al was the faculty adviser for the Future Farmers of America (FFA) chapter at the high school. Under his leadership, the N-K FFA Chapter received the Premiere Exhibit Award at the Minnesota State Spring Barrow Show four years in a row (school years 1976/1977; 1977/1978; 1978/1979 and 1979/1980), an accomplishment that had never happened before, and which record is still unbroken, in the history of this prestigious show.

After his time at N-K, Albert taught in the Agriculture Department at North Iowa Area Community College (formerly Mason City Community College) in Mason City for a number of years. From 1992 to 2012, Al owned and operated the A-Team Transporters, a transportation company specializing in the delivery of Kiefer built trailers, campers and livestock trailers to sites in the United States and overseas. Al delivered in every state in the continental U.S. except Vermont, and oversaw shipments overseas as far as Austria and Argentina. Through his A-Team Transporters he sponsored several N-K golf tournaments. He also served on the N-K School Board.

Al was an avid softball player, bowler and golfer, but his main interest was agriculture and farming. He loved his small acreage in rural Northwood and recently placed part of the acreage in the Wetland Protection Program through the Soil Conservation Service. Al was a dreamer and a thinker, always looking for a new adventure and venture. Ill health in recent years sharply curtailed his activities, but he always kept up with current events and activities in the community and in his family's lives. Al was an organ donor and his ocular tissue and cornea will help some individual obtain improved eyesight.

Al is survived by his three sons: Paul (Mona) of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia; James (Theresia) of Urbandale, Iowa; and Jason of Dexter, Iowa, and two grandchildren: Alexander and Gabriel of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Also surviving are his brother Frank (Judie) Adams of Northwood, his sisters Frances Guertin and Delores Marsh of Mason City, Gloria (Jim) Helgeson of Kensett and Marilyn (George) Lagios of Clear Lake, as well as many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends throughout the United States and in the North Iowa and Southern Minnesota area.

Preceding him in death are his parents, Frank Sr. and Henrietta (Abrahams) Adams, his paternal and maternal grandparents, his sisters Harriet Anderson and Arlene Adams and his brothers-in-law Merl 'Andy' Anderson, Richard 'Obie' Guertin and Gordon 'Gordie' Marsh; his niece Ila Anderson Cousins and his nephew Tyrus Anderson.

LARRY GENE JORGENSEN
March 23, 1936 - July 13, 2013

Larry Gene Jorgensen, 77, Northwood, died Saturday, July 13, 2013, at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood.

A funeral service for Larry will be held at 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, July 16, 2013, at the Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Ave. South, Northwood, with Pastor Judy Converse of First Lutheran Church in Northwood officiating. Burial will be in the Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood, with military honors conducted by members of Our Buddies VFW Memorial Post #6779 of Northwood. Visitation will be held from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. on Monday and one hour prior to service time on Tuesday at the chapel.

Larry Gene Jorgensen was born on March 23, 1936, in Norfolk, NE, the son of David and Esther (Greene) Jorgensen. Larry was a life long resident of Northwood, and graduated from Northwood High School.

Larry entered the Navy at Fort Des Moines, on September 21, 1955, and served his country honorably and faithfully until his honorable discharge on September 22, 1959.

He was united in marriage to Judy Dimmel on February 14, 1960, in Austin, MN, and had been together for 53 years, and to this marriage four children were born; David, Richard, Jennifer, and Robert.

Larry was a carpenter for 50 years in and around Northwood. His passion was hunting, fishing and camping.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Judy Jorgensen of Northwood; four children, David (Lisa) Jorgensen of Webster City, Richard Jorgensen of Northwood, Jennifer (James) Collins of Mason City, and Robert (Chris) Jorgensen of Rochester, MN; seven grandchildren, Kim, Kasey, and Christopher Jorgensen, Evan and Noah Collins, and Dylan and Mason Jorgensen; three sisters, Marilyn (Walter) Probst of Ingram Texas, Beth (Gene) Bolsen of Nora Springs, and Elaine (Ray) Zobel of Custer, South Dakota; as well as many other nieces, nephews, and other extended family members and friends.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents.

REVA MAE BURGESS
July 25, 1917 - July 12, 2013

Reva Mae Morlan Burgess of Marion, formerly of Northwood, Iowa, died July 12, 2013, in Cape Coral, Florida, of brain cancer. She was 13 days short of 96 years old. There will be a celebration of life on Saturday August 10, 2013, at 2:00 P. M. at Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Marion.

Survivors include four children; Barbara (Robert) Vavra of Marion, Janet (Lon) Chappell of Fort Myers, Florida, Kent ( Carol Hebert) Burgess of Victor, Colorado, and Donald (Mary) Burgess of Scottsdale, Arizonia; nine grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; four great- great grandchildren; two sisters; Mrs. Joe Moore and Mrs. Alvin Spring of Centerville, Iowa; many nieces and nephews.

Reva was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers; three sisters; a grandchild; one great-grandchild; and her husband, Donald.

Reva was born in Southern Iowa on July 25, 1917, to George and Ella Mae Ogden Morlan. Reva was united in marriage to Donald Burgess on November 26, 1937, in the Church of the Brethren in Unionville, Iowa. In 1958, they purchased the Coast to Coast Store in Northwood, Iowa where she worked until she retired.

Reva loved to cook and cooked entirely for the Burgess Reunion of 25 people for two days, the last two years.

Memorials should be directed to The Living Water United Methodist Church Food Bank in Marion, Iowa in Reva’s memory.


MARLENE L SCHROEDER
February 19, 1950 - July 18, 2013

Marlene L. Schroeder, 63, of Northwood, IA, died Thursday, July 18, 2013, at her daughter’s home in Mason City after a courageous battle with cancer. Memorial services will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Monday, July 22, 2013, at the First Presbyterian Church, 100 S. Pierce Street – Mason City, with Rev. Paul Collier officiating. A gathering of family and friends will be from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM, on Sunday (July 21, 2013) at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue – Mason City. Memorials may be directed to the Marlene Schroeder memorial fund in care of the family.

Marlene was born February 19, 1950, in Albert Lea, MN, the daughter of Theodore and Cora (Swenning) Olson. Marlene had studied organ since the age of 13. Her instructors have included Maurice Andersen, Prof. Eugene Janssen and Paul L. Anderson, FFAGO. She attended high school in Albert Lea, MN. Marlene was united in marriage to Vernon Schroeder, and to this union two daughters were born: Barb and Terri. She later continued her education at Metropolitan State College in Denver, Colorado where she majored in organ performance under the direction of Dr. Joyce Kull. While in Denver, she performed with the Colorado Orchestra on several occasions and also became the Institutional Sales Manager and Rodgers Instruments Representative at Wells Music. .

After returning to Iowa, Marlene Schroeder joined the staff of Dewey Kruger Music (Northwood) in January of 1995 as the Rodgers Organ Consultant and was factory trained and an authorized representative of Rodgers Instruments in Hillsboro Oregon. Marlene was responsible for the development of the Rodgers Organ installations and training of the musicians.

Marlene has played the organ for numerous churches over the years, and most recently played for the First Presbyterian Church in Mason City, where she was a member. She was also a member of the American Guild of Organists (AGO). She truly enjoyed playing the piano & organ. Marlene also enjoyed raising Appaloosa horses and had a great love for all animals.

Marlene is survived by 2 daughters: Barbara Hodge and husband Llew of Mason City, and Terri Smith and husband Dan of Cresco, IA; 4 grandchildren: Krystine Hodge and her significant other: Matt Hutchens of Mankato, MN, Robert Hodge and fiancée: Katy Pfeifer of Austin, MN, Ashley Olson and husband Nick of Cresco, and Derek Praska of Cresco; 4 great grandchildren: Skylar, Quinzey, Jazzmine and Zoie; and her sister: Carolyn Noland of Albert Lea. She is also survived by several cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; 3 brothers: Laverne, Manville and William Olson; and her common law husband: JJ Hunera. She will be deeply missed.
