Lawrence W. Haight

Lawrence (Larry) W. Haight,
passed away on Saturday, September 2, 2006, at the Daisy Hill
Estates in Los Osos, California.
Larry lived many years growing up in Northwood and graduated
from high school here. Afterwards he went to electrical school.
He worked at the Northwood Post Office and repaired radios, etc.
in his off-hours. Larry’s father was George W. Haight who owned
and ran the local movie theater. His mother was Lillian Nockels
Haight. They are both buried in the Northwood
Cemetery.
Interment was held at The Chapel of the Light in
Fresno, California. He requested no funeral be conducted. He did ask
that all who knew him to toast him with a cup of coffee or
whatever your choice might be. He was always a tower of strength
to those who knew and loved him and will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his wife, Della A. Haight of Los Osos, California; his
daughter, Lorrie Haight Smith; son-in-law, Harrison (Smitty)
Smith of Long Beach, Washington; his step-son, Dale Kaisen of Caynsos,
California.
His son, David and wife, Majorie passed on many years ago.

Larry Loken

Larry G. Loken, age 58, of 4788 Juniper Ave., died on Thursday,
September 7, 2006, at the Muse–Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit of North
Iowa in Mason City.
Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m., on Saturday, September 9, 2006, at
the
First Lutheran Church in Northwood, with Reverend Thomas Martin
officiating. Burial was in the North Round Prairie Cemetery at
Glenville, Minnesota. Visitation was from 5-7:00 p.m., at the Conner
Colonial Chapel, Northwood.
Larry G. Loken, was born on February 5, 1948, to Melvin and Alma
(Stiehl) Loken in Albert Lea, Minnesota. He attended Northwood
Schools
and graduated from the Northwood-Kensett High School in 1966. He
then attended NIACC and graduated from Mankato State University
with a BA Degree in 1970. Larry farmed in the Northwood area
all of his life.
He was united in marriage to Becky Amundson on August 28, 1999,
in Northwood. Larry enjoyed hunting, fishing, and their trips
to Mexico. Larry loved cars, farm equipment and his hunting
dogs.
Larry was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Northwood and the
Farm Bureau.
Surviving Larry are his wife, Becky of Northwood; three sons,
Jonah (Tena) Tasker and children, Tyler and Ethian of Albert
Lea, Minnesota, Scott (Valerie) Engstler and children, Harmony and
Bobby of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and Russ (Sarah) Engstler and children,
Emma and Marcus of Durant, Iowa.
Also surviving are his brother, Ronald (Linda) Loken of
Northwood; sister, Marlene (Dub Graversen) Peterson of Mason
City; mother-in-law, Mrs. James (Pearl) Amundson of Albert Lea,
Minnesota; and by several nieces and nephews, Lori
Peterson, Brenda (Joe) Neville, Rod (Sue) Loken, Ann (Craig
Tallberg) Peterson, Robin (Jay) Hopperstad and Tracy (Wayne) Kettwick; seven great nieces and nephews; and life long best
friend, Michael Ingersoll.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin and Alma Loken;
step-mother, Shirley Booen; and his father-in-law, James Amundson.

Robert C. Bride
September 20, 2006
Robert C. Bride, 87, passed away on Wednesday, September
13, 2006, at the Manly Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., on Monday, September 18, at the
Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Manly, with Reverend Linda Johnson Prestholt officiating. Burial was in the Manly Cemetery with
military honors conducted by members of the Edward Tosel
American Legion Post. Visitation was on Sunday, September 17, at
the Bride Colonial Chapel, Manly.
Robert was born on October 20, 1918, in Prairie Due Chien,
Wisconsin, the son of John C. and Gertrude E. (Parker) Bride. The family moved to Anamosa, Iowa, where Robert attended school
and graduated from the Anamosa High School in 1936. He also
attended the University of Wisconsin for two years before
transferring to the College of Mortuary Science in St. Louis,
Missouri. He received his license in 1940, and joined his parents in
the operation of the Bride Funeral Home, which was established
in Manly in 1939.
Robert enlisted in the Army Air Corps on March 20, 1942, and
received his commission as a 2nd Lt. along with his wings on
February 3, 1943. He served in the China Burma Theater where he
flew over 1,000 hours; two hundred of those hours were in a
thirty-day period in a combat zone. In total he flew 99 combat
missions. He received the Air Medal with Star, the
Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star, and the Presidential
Unit Citation. He was honorably discharged from the service at
the rank of 1st Lt. in May of 1945.
Robert was united in marriage to Bernice A. Roslien on February
4, 1943 in Mesa, Arizona, the day after his commissioning. After
his discharge in 1945, they returned to Manly to operate the
Bride Funeral home that he purchased from his parents in 1948.
Robert was a true entrepreneur and was involved in various
businesses throughout his professional career having been a
partner in the Colonial Funeral Home in Mason City and the Manly
Insurance Agency. In the late 50's, he became involved with the
Manly State Bank and joined the bank as vice president and
director. He served as Worth County corner for many years being
first elected in 1947. Robert was also very involved in the
community and held numerous positions on local boards including
the Mason City Good Shepherd Nursing Home and was a member of
the Bethlehem Lutheran Church and was co-chair of the builders
committee. He particularly enjoyed serving on the board of the
Manly Retirement Apartments, which he helped organize in 1969. In 1971, Robert retired from business and began a period of
travel, golfing, and wintering in Arizona. He was a founding
member of the Pioneer Town and Country Club in Manly, where he
could be found on most days of summer working on his favorite
past time.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Bernice Bride of Manly;
his son, Robert Bride, Jr. and his wife, Marcia of Apple Valley,
California; his granddaughters, Nicole Lipton and her husband, Shawn of
Ballard, Washington and Jessica Bride of San Francisco, California; two
cousins, John C. Parker and his wife, Terry of Mission Viejo, California
and Ann Goodsir and her husband, Fred of Janesville, Wisconsin; as well
as many friends.
His parents; and an infant daughter, Mary Ann Bride preceded him
in death.

Ralph Brunsvold

Ralph Brunsvold, 75, of
Joice, died on Friday, September 15, 2006, at his home.
Funeral
services were held at 1:30 p.m., on Tuesday, September 19, at
the Trinity
Lutheran Church, with Rev. Jim Magelssen officiating. Interment
was in the Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation was from 5-8:00 p.m.,
on Monday, September 18, at the Major Erickson Funeral Home. Memorials
may be given to KCMR Christian Radio, Mason City.
Ralph was born in Albert Lea, Minnesota, the son of Theodore and
Christine (Nelson) Brunsvold, on September 22, 1930. He was
baptized and confirmed at yhe Concordia Lutheran Church, rural Joice. He attended country school through the 8th grade and graduated
from the Hanlontown High School in 1948.
Ralph married Dolores Payne, his high school sweetheart, on
February 27, 1949, and they lived and farmed in the Joice area
his entire life. In their early years of farming they had dairy
cattle, chickens and beef, and for a time he worked at the
American Crystal Sugar Beet plant during the winter months, but
he was especially known for his high quality farrow-to-finish
hog operation that he maintained for over 40 years. Although he
"retired" from farming in 1997, he continued to assist his
son-in-law, Paul with fieldwork each year and he remained an
active caretaker of their home place until his death. He was
also one of the first farmers in Worth County to install
terraces to control soil erosion, for which he was given a soil
conservation award. He truly was a steward of the land.
Ralph and Dolores enjoyed traveling, and made numerous trips to
Texas, Maryland, California, Montana and Missouri for family
visits and in recent years they spent the winters in Mission,
Texas. He enjoyed playing 500 with family and friends, putting
together jigsaw puzzles and listening to Gospel Music,
especially the Gaithers and the Cathedrals.
But above everything else, Ralph just enjoyed being with his
family and grandchildren.
Left to cherish his memory is his
wife, Dolores of Joice; a son, David and his wife, Sara of
Northwood and a daughter, Diane Anderson and her husband, Paul
also of Joice. His grandchildren are Trisha and Matt Shields
of Belton, Missouri, Amy Brunsvold of Bozeman, Montana, Nathan and
Marisa Anderson of Clarksville and Matt and Gina Brunsvold of
Phoenix, Arizona. Great-grandchildren are Madison Shields and
Devin Anderson. He is also survived by his sister, Beverly
Witter, of Leesburg, Florida.
Ralph was preceded in death by his parents; and an infant
grandchild, Emily Brunsvold.

Steven Merle Aase

Steven Merle Aase, 57, of Northwood, passed
away unexpectedly on Thursday, September 21, 2006, at his
home in Northwood.
Funeral services were held on Monday, September 25, 2006, at
l:30 p.m. at the First Lutheran Church in Northwood, with
Rev. Tom Martin officiating. Visitation was held on Sunday,
September 24, 2006, from 4-7:00 p.m., at the Schroeder &
Sites Funeral Home, Northwood and continued one hour prior
to the service on Monday at the church. Burial will take
place at the South Shell Rock Cemetery, Northwood.
Steven M. Aase, was born on March 9, l949, to Merle and Sally
Aase in Albert Lea, Minnesota. He attended the
Northwood-Kensett schools and graduated in l967. Steve
lived in Northwood all of his life on the Aase family farm. He loved raising animals and won many awards. Steve was an
honorary member of the FFA. Steve worked at Alliant Energy
for 31 years. In addition, he had his longhorn cattle and
sawdust business. Steve also loved sports and was an avid
Iowa Hawkeye fan.
Steve was united in marriage to Sharon Amundson on August
13, l977 in Northwood. Family was very important to Steve.
Surviving Steve is his wife, Sharon of Northwood; daughter,
Debra McDole of Marshalltown; grandchildren, Nathaniel and
Natasha of Marshalltown; his parents, Merle and Sally Aase
of Northwood; brother, Larry and his wife, Jackie and their
two children, Lauren and Joe of Port Townsend, Washington;
aunts and uncles, Don and Gloria Hagen of Northwood, Alvin
and Janet Anderson of Sun City, Arizona, Shirley Ryan of
Albert Lea, Minnesota, Chet and Sandy Eisenmen of Britt; and
many cousins and friends.
Steve was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents,
Fred and Inga Aase; maternal grandparents, Norval and Grayce
Ryan; aunt and uncles, Mic and Dick Mandt and Virgil Ryan.
Steve was a loving husband, father, son, grandparent,
brother and friend. He will be greatly missed.

Alicia Genevieve Bergo, 93, of
Northwood, died on Thursday, September 21, 2006, at
the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood.
A funeral service was held at 10:30 a.m., on Monday,
September 25, 2006, at the Silver Lake Lutheran Church,
rural Northwood, with Reverend Randy Baldwin officiating. Burial was in the South Shell Rock Cemetery, rural
Northwood. Visitation was held from 4-7:00 p.m., on Sunday,
September 24, at the Conner Colonial Chapel, Northwood. Visitation was also held on Monday at the church.
Alicia Genevieve Bergo, was born on February 7, 1913 in
Bottineau, North Dakota, the daughter of Nilen and Inga
(Sanderson) Johnson. She was baptized in February 1913, in
the Lutheran Church in Bottineau, North Dakota, and
reaffirmed the faith of her baptism through confirmation on
August 28, 1927, by Reverend Hans Fosnes at the Silver Lake
Lutheran Church, rural Northwood. Alicia received her
education in the Northwood Community School, and graduated
from the Northwood High School in 1932. She was united in
marriage to Bennie M. Hagen on June 2, 1935, in the Silver
Lake Lutheran Church, rural Northwood. Alicia worked for
Deluxe Products (now Fleetguard) in Lake Mills for 19 years
until her retirement. She was united in marriage to Orvin
Julian Bergo on November 11, 1979. He preceded her in death
on October 24, 1991. Besides working in Lake Mills, Alicia
also helped her husbands on the family farm in rural
Northwood.
She enjoyed working outside on the family farm, baking and
was known for her brownies, gardening, flowers, making
quilts in church, and wintering in Alamo, Texas, but her
great love and enjoyment was her family, extended family,
and grandchildren.
She was a member of Silver Lake Lutheran Church, and a
church circle.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Sandy Nowlin of
Northwood, Marcia (Ronald) Hulshizer of St. Ansgar;
step-children, Barb (Sonny) Paulson of Emmons, Minnesota,
Dennis (Renee) Bergo of Lake Mills, Judy (Alan) Rohne of
Glenville, Minnesota and Bruce Bergo of Cabool, Missouri;

James Norland
Medlang, 83, of rural Kensett, died on Saturday, September
23, 2006, at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. today,
Wednesday, September 27, 2006, at the Elk Creek Lutheran
Church, Kensett, with Reverend Tom Martin officiating. Burial will be in the Elk Creek Lutheran Church Cemetery. Visitation was held from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Tuesday,
September 26, 2006, at the Conner Colonial Chapel,
Northwood. Visitation will be held one hour prior to
service time on Wednesday at the church.
James Norland Medlang, was born on July 17, 1923, in rural
Kensett, the son of Melvin and Mabel (Stadheim) Medlang. He
was baptized at his parent's home in rural Kensett, and
reaffirmed the faith of his baptism through confirmation at
the Elk Creek Lutheran Church. He attended Brookfield
Township School #7, and graduated from the Kensett High
School in 1941. He was united in marriage to Lucille
Knutson on August 7, 1949, at the Northwood Lutheran Church.
James farmed all his life in the Kensett area raising Brown
Swiss dairy cattle, hogs, sheep, chicken, and horses. James
enjoyed collecting different breeds of chickens, and raised
several other breeds of animals on his farm. He enjoyed
flowers, trees, old farm machinery, draft horses, which
included going to horse shows, traveling both nationally and
internationally, and family history and genealogy, but his
great love and enjoyment was his family and grandchildren.
He was a member of the Elk Creek Lutheran Church, and was a
former vice president of the church board, was on the Elk
Creek Lutheran Church Cemetery Board for many years, and a
national member of the Brown Swiss Cattle Association.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Lucille Medlang of
Kensett; his children, Charles (Linda) Medlang of Kensett,
Inez (David) Metzger of Burlington, Lois (David) McNutt of
Kensett, Morris (Jenelle) Medlang of Kensett, Joanna (Joe)
Schmidt of Kensett, Marie (Jack) Ruiter of Northwood, Grace
(Bruce) Pixley of Grafton and James (Linda) Medlang of
Northwood; 29 grandchildren, Steven and Michelle Medlang,
Shawna (Adrian) Dickey, Brian and Bjorn Metzger, Kim McNutt,
Kevin (Susan) McNutt, Jennifer, Jonathan, Christopher,

Dr. John Welsh

Dr. John Patrick Welsh, born on November 13,
1954, in Mason City, Iowa, died on Sunday, September 24,
2006.
A memorial service was held on Saturday September 30,
at the Windemere Hotel at 5:00 p.m., in Sierra Vista to
accommodate all of the friends and loved ones who want to
remember his full and adventurous life.
He was raised in Northwood, Iowa, and graduated in 1973 from
the Northwood-Kensett High School, where he was involved in
track, wrestling, and cross country. He was a state champion
pole vaulter and wrestler.
He was married to Carol Ann Stevenson, on March 19, 1976, in
Osage, Iowa. Shortly after they were married they moved to
Los Angeles where he attended Cleveland Chiropractic
College. After graduation, he opened his first practice in
Clarion, Iowa, where he worked until he relocated to Sierra
Vista, Arizona, in 1995 and opened Welsh Chiropractic.
Dr. Welsh’s sense of humor was one of his most endearing
qualities and trademarks; he had a true gift in making
others laugh. He loved to fly and ride horses with his wife
and daughters.
He is survived by his wife, Carol; daughters, Nicole and
Roslyn of Sierra Vista; his mother and brother, Lois Welsh
and Dr. James Welsh of Northwood, Iowa; sisters, Cris Wells
of Peoria, Arizona and Dr. Gayle King of Green Valley,
Arizona; brother-in-law, Dr. Laurence Wells and Dr. Robert
King; nieces, Maurissa Mattson, Lauren Wells, Caitlin King,
Kelli Welsh and Layla Mattson; and nephews, Robert King,
Ryan King and Liam Mattson.
He was preceded in death by his father, Dr. Maurice Welsh;
and his aunt, Maxine Phillipps.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be
sent to the charity of their choice.

Harley Youmans

A memorial service was
held in Libby, Montana, for Harley Youmans, 85, of Libby,
who died on Monday, September 25, 2006, in Libby. Committal
will be at a later date.
Harley was born on August 9, 1921, in Glenville, Minnesota,
to Minnie (Beighley) and Ed Youmans. He attended the Kensett
School and was united in marriage to Rose Seater on October
30, 1945.
He farmed in northern Iowa and north central Minnesota in
the early 60’s and than the family moved to the west coast.
He retired from construction in 1974 after working on the
Libby dam. He was an avid hunter and sportsman.
Preceding him in death were his parents; wife, Rose;
brother, Glen; sister, Betty; and nephew, Rickey Furnish.
Survivors included Larry and his wife, Diane, Lynn and his
wife, Larie; sister, Mayme Furnish; nephew, Randy Furnish;
grandchildren, Sauder, Christifer and Steven;
great-grandchildren, Subrena and Danial Lucrs, and Joshua
Youmans.

Dr. August Grosland

Dr. August
Grosland, passed away on September 26, 2006, at the Gunnison
Health Care Center, Gunnison, Colorado.
Funeral services were held on Monday, October 2, 2006, at 10:00
a.m., at the Community Church, with Steve Moorhouse officiating.
Burial took place in the Gunnison Cemetery, Gunnison, Colorado.
Dr. Grosland, son of Ole and Clara (Holter) Grosland, was born
in his parental rural home, Northwood, Iowa, on August 8, 1919.
He was baptized in infancy at the Silver Lake Lutheran Church,
reaffirmed the faith of his baptism through confirmation at the
Bristol Lutheran Church, Joice, Iowa.
August received his elementary education in Worth County rural
school, Brookfield #3, and graduated from the Northwood High
School in 1937, he graduated from Waldorf College, Forest City,
Iowa, in 1939 and began his teaching career at the rural Tenold
School, Worth County Brookfield #4.
August served in World War II, with the Radar Signal Air Warning
unit attached to the 9th Air Force. After his Honorable
discharge from the service, he returned to college and received
his Masters of Fine Arts from the University of Iowa, Iowa City,
in 1949.
He received a position in the Art Department of the Western
State College, Gunnison, Colorado, and moved to Gunnison in the
fall of 1949. August continued his education with the University
of Missouri, and received his Doctorate in Education. He became
Chairman of the Art Department of Western State and judged art
shows throughout the state. He was an active member of the art
faculties in Colorado higher education. Under his direction the
Homecoming Art Auction was created to create scholarships for
art department students.
August married Loret de Koevend on December 26, 1969. He retired
from Western State College in 1979. He and his wife remained
loyal supporters of Western State College and created several
scholarship programs. Their home was always open to students who
needed special assistance in learning the American culture and
language.
August is survived by his wife Loret; sisters, Martha Dahl of
Austin, Minnesota and Evelyn Garnas of Clear Lake;
sister-in-law, Della Grosland of Mason City; brother and
sister-in-law, John and Georgie Kincaid of Gunnison, Colorado;
along with numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ole and Clara Grosland;
and brothers, Oscar, Carl, Louis, Elmer, Adolph and George.
Also, two brother-in-laws, Henry Dahl and Robert Garnas.

Marguerite D. Will

Marguerite D. Will, age 86, of Albert Lea, Minnesota, died on Thursday, September 28, 2006, at the Thorne
Crest Retirement Center.
Memorial services for Marguerite
were held at 11:00 a.m., on Tuesday, October 3, 2006, at the Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home. Rev. John Bromeland officiated.
Interment was in the Hillcrest Cemetery.
Marguerite D. Will, was born on January 17, 1920, to Oliver J.
and Idella P. (Linter) Turbett in rural Glenville. She
graduated from the Northwood High School and attended Iowa State
Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Marguerite taught school
for 12 years in Shellrock Township, Minnesota and 7 years in
Worth County, Iowa.
On June 5, 1941, she was united in marriage to Leighton E. Will
in Gordonsville. Marguerite had lived in Freeborn County for
over 70 years and had attended the Methodist Church her entire
life. She had worked at Red Owl for 17 years and was a member
of the Eagles and Moose Auxiliaries.
Survivors include her husband, Leighton of Albert Lea; son,
Larry and wife, Carolyn Will of Omaha, Nebraska; daughter,
Deanne and husband, Harold Kuchera of Hayward; grandchildren,
Allan and wife, Sara Kuchera of Farmington, Alisa and husband,
Nathan Niesen of Lakeville, Deborah Will and husband, James
Fredrickson and Matt Will, all of Omaha, Nebraska;
great-grandchildren, Samuel Kuchera, Benjamin Kuchera, Matthew
Kuchera and Emma Niesen; nieces, Rosemary Halstead of Albert Lea
and Kathy Schlede of Austin; and great-nieces and nephews and
cousins.
Marguerite was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Doris
Buchanan; and a great-grandson.

Haerther, 92, of Northwood, Iowa, died on Sunday, September
30, 2006, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason
City, Iowa.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, October
3, at 1:30 p.m., at the Silver Lake Lutheran Church,
Northwood, with Rev. Randy Baldwin officiating. Burial was
in the Silver Lake Cemetery. Visitation was held on Monday,
October 2, at the Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, Northwood.
Gaythel was born on December 23, 1913, in Thornburg,
Arkansas, to Elza and Elizabeth (Boyett) Howard. She was
orphaned when she was 3 years old and spent many years in
foster homes until she came to Iowa to live with her sister,
Lydia and her family at age 15.
On April 18, 1938, she married Bennie Loberg at the Silver
Lake Lutheran Church in rural Northwood, Iowa. From this
union four children were born. She was active in the Silver
Lake Lutheran Church and loved to cook, garden and visit
with people.
She is survived by her children, Julie (Karl) Himan of
Branson West, Missouri, John (Karen) Loberg of Los Angeles,
California, Linda (Chris) Henry of Farmington, Minnesota,
William (Jeanne) Loberg of Northwood, Iowa; eight
grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two
great-great-grandsons.
Three years after the death of Bennie, Gaythel married
Herman Haerther on September 1, 1974, and moved to Atkins,
Iowa. Her five step-children are Dale (Jane) of McAllen,
Texas, Glenn of Atkins, Iowa, Leroy (Susan) of Boca Raton,
Florida, Geraldine (Kay) of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Norma
(Grant) of Pacific, California. They had nine grandchildren
and 18 great-grandchildren. She was an active member of the
St. Stevens Lutheran Church. She was preceded in death by
Herman and Glenn's wife, Mary.
Gaythel was preceded in death by her parents; husband,
Bennie; two brothers; two sisters; and one grandson, Ben.
Gaythel recently moved to the Maple Court Apartments in
Northwood and rejoined the Silver Lake Lutheran Church. She
passed away quietly after suffering a stroke on September
20. The family extends heartfelt thanks for the kind and
caring staff at Mercy Hospital on the sixth and fourth
floors and the Hospice of North Iowa during this time.
