Beulah LaVerne Smith

Beulah LaVerne Smith, known as "B", daughter of Elmer Lee
and Alice Anderson Picht, was born on July 11, 1915, at
Lohrville and departed this life on Friday, November 11,
2011.
Memorial services will be
held at the Living Word United Methodist Church, 17315
Manchester Rd., Wildwood, Missouri, at 2:00 p.m., on
Saturday, November 26. Memorial visitation will be Saturday,
from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the Memorial services. A
service of the SCHRADER Funeral Home and Crematory.
Beulah lived with her
parents, brothers and sister at Lohrville, baptized at an
early age and at the age of 14 became a member of the
Methodist Church in Lohrville. She attended grade and high
school there. On August 28, 1935, she was united in marriage
to Bob Craigmile Frotscher which terminated in his death, as
a flight instructor in a student training airplane accident
at the Fort Doge airport on November 19, 1944. Beulah then
attended business college studying business administration,
then worked as an executive secretary at the Fort Dodge
Laboratories, Inc., Fort Dodge, for seven years. During this
time she continued a flight training course began earlier in
the marriage; earning a private pilots license from Fred
Heidelbauer at Sac City, where she had continued her flight
training. She actively promoted aviation through the
Ninety-Nines, Inc., The International Organization of
Licensed Women Pilots. On June 21, 1953, Beulah was united
in marriage to Robert Charles Smith. To this union a
daughter, Machelle Ann was born at Forest City, where Mr.
Smith was affiliated with the Bowen Food Stores. The family
moved to Britt in 1956, where Mr. Smith owned and operated
the Bowen Food Center until his death on May 25, 1967.
"B" began secretarial
employment at the Britt Tech Corporation at Britt after
closing the store. Then she and Machelle moved back to
Forest City taking employment at Winnebago Industries; then
to the United Methodist Church as the first full-time church
and financial secretary for ten years. She retired from this
employment on August 22, 1980. Being an active person, she
pursued retirement activity in church, golf, bridge,
refinishing furniture, genealogy, crafts, relatives and
friends.
She has been a member of
the United Methodist Church of Forest City, Happy Hour
Fellowship, Women's Club-Twentieth Century Club, Kum-Along
Club, The Imogene Chapter of the Rebekah Lodge at Sac City.
Beulah ("B") was a past president of the Iowa Chapter of the
National Secretaries Association; a past president of the
Upper Iowa Chapter of the Ninety-Nines, Inc.
In July 1997, Beulah moved
to Ellisville, Missouri, to be near her daughter, Machelle
and family. Here her activities included bridge, genealogy,
knitting, crocheting, baking, scrap booking, picture
booking, indoor gardening, embroidery, sewing and spending
as much time as would allow with her family, watching and
nurturing her much loved grandsons grow.
Left to mourn or glorify
her passing are her daughter, Machelle Ann and son-in-law,
Dan Kimball; grandchildren, Daniel Jonathon and John Matthew
Kimball of Kirkwood, Missouri; one brother, Darrel of
Dallas, Texas; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Frotscher and Robert C. Smith; four brothers, Earl Lee Picht,
Bertis Dean Picht, Paul H. Pricht and Glen Picht; and her
sister, June Picht Miller. |
RetaMae Lewis
November 23, 2011
RetaMae Lewis, 90, of Forest City, died on Sunday, November
13, 2011, at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.
Funeral service was held
at 10:30 a.m., on Thursday, November 17, at the United
Methodist Church in Forest City, with Pastor Jerald Swanberg
officiating. Burial was in the Oakland Cemetery in Forest
City. Visitation was held from 4-7:00 p.m., on Wednesday, at
the Petersen Lund Funeral Home in Forest City and continued
an hour prior to the services at the church.
RetaMae
Lewis, the daughter of Elmer and Bonnie (Dow) Brooker, was
born on July 28, 1921, at the home of her parents eight
miles west of Forest City. When two years old, she moved
with her parents and brother, Wayne, southeast of Forest
City where she lived until her marriage. She attended a
rural school nearby and graduated from the Forest City High
School with a normal training certificate. RetaMae later
taught at a rural school. On July 26, 1942, she married
Lloyd Lewis. They moved to Austin, Minnesota, where he was
employed at Hormel until called into service. She followed
later to California when he was stationed in Fresno,
California and Santa Maria, California. While there she was
employed in Civil Service at the base offices. They were
moved to Orlando, Florida and to Montgomery, Alabama, where
he was discharged.
Returning home from the
service, they lived and were employed in Britt. They then
joined in a family partnership and started the original
"Hi-Way-Market" in Forest City. They later moved to
Northwood, where Lloyd was employed in Nelson Hardware.
RetaMae attended Mason City Junior College and taught school
again until the arrival of their son, Lonny Lee in December
1953. In 1954, the family moved to Belmond where they
started the "Belmond Hardware". While there, they were
joined by a second son, Spencer Ray in December 1959.
Because of health reasons the store was sold and they moved
to Mason City where Lloyd was employed at Curries Hardware.
RetaMae was employed at the Penny's Store and Madison School
as a Para-Professional. Moving back to Forest City in 1970,
RetaMae was in the Elementary School as a substitute teacher
and Teacher Associate until she retired in 1990, after
nineteen years.
RetaMae always enjoyed her
home, family, five grandchildren, church work, Senior
Citizens, gardening and camping. She was active in church
and circles, Rebekah Lodge filling all stations, and the
Retired Teachers.
RetaMae
is survived by her husband of sixty-nine years, Lloyd Lewis
of Forest City; two sons, Lon (Nancy) Lewis and their
daughter, Mary and Spencer (Janet) Lewis and their four
daughters, Amanda, Kaitlyn, Bonnie and Rhiannon; and several
nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death
by her parents; and her brother, Wayne and his wife, Helen.

Dorothy Ann (Harlson)
Stampfel
November 23, 2011
Dorothy Ann (Harlson) Stampfel, 80, of Red Lodge,
Montana, passed away on Sunday, November 13, 2011, at
home on Willow Creek where she had lived for 53 years.
Vigil services were
held at 7:00 p.m., on Friday, November 18 and a Funeral
Mass was celebrated at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, November
19, both at the St. Agnes Catholic Church. Interment was
in the Red Lodge Cemetery. The Smith-Olcott Funeral
Chapel of Red Lodge, Montana, was in charge of the
arrangements.
Dorothy was born on
May 21, 1931 in Forest City, the daughter of Carl and
Emily (Schutz) Harlson. She was raised on a farm, which
is still in the family and attended a one room country
school, where her father was on the school board and her
mother the caretaker. She graduated from the Forest City
High School and from a 3 year RN program at St. Mary's
School of Nursing in Rochester, Minnesota. Dorothy
worked as a head nurse under Dr. Charlie Mayo at the St.
Mary's Hospital and then on the nursing staff at
Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She was
always drawn to the west, so in 1957, she and a friend
moved to Billings, Montana, where she worked as a nurse
in the St. Vincent's Hospital.
On February 8, 1958,
Dorothy married B. John Stampfel whom she met at a dance
at the Patrician Club in Billings. She moved with him to
the ranch north of Red Lodge where they lived and worked
and raised their family. They were blessed with five
children and 16 grandchildren.
Dorothy's family was
her priority, her passion and her pride and joy. She
loved being a mother and grandmother and would do
anything for one of her own. She was very giving and had
a playful sense of humor. She loved baking and sharing
her goodies with friends, family and neighbors. She also
enjoyed reading and watching movies, especially a good
western. The other most important thing to Dorothy was
her faith. She was diligent about passing that faith to
her kids. She was an active member of the St. Agnes
Catholic Church, serving on the Parish Council and the
Altar Society.
Dorothy was a founder
of the Willow Creek Neighbors Club in 1960 and a long
time member of the Laureate Pi Chapter of Beta Sigma
Phi. She was also a member of the Cowbelles
Cattlewomen's Association.
Dorothy was preceded
in death by her husband, John; her parents; and her
sister, Winifred.
She is survived by her
son, John (Katherine) Stampfel and their children,
Annika, John Reagan, Jacob, Grace and Henry of Red
Lodge; son, Jim (Andrea) and their children, Colton,
Ryland and Treylan of Absarokee; daughter, Loretta
(Kyle) Berg and their children, Kaitlyn and Wyatt of
Cheyenne, Wyoming; daughter, Kate (Scott) Steele and
their children, Taylor, Christian and Brock of Phoenix,
Arizona; and daughter, Emily (Mark) Deichl and their
children, Nicole, David and John of Billings.
Memorials may be made
to the St. Agnes Catholic Church or to the Beartooth
Homecare and Hospice.

Wanda Tweeten
November 30, 2011
Wanda Tweeten, age 87, of Forest City, died on Tuesday,
November 22, 2011, at the Concord Care Center in Garner.
Funeral services were held
at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, November 26, at the Immanuel
Lutheran Church in Forest City, with Rev. Rod Hopp
officiating. Burial was in the Oakland Cemetery. Visitation
was held from 4-7:00 p.m., on Friday, November 25, at the
Petersen Lund Funeral Home in Forest City and continued an
hour prior to the services at the church.
Wanda Jean Tweeten, was
born in Mason City, on September 24, 1924, the daughter of
Carl and Golda (Evans) Whorley. She received her education
in Mason City and graduated from the Mason City High School
in 1942. After graduation she worked at the Northwestern
Cement Plant and for the Bell Telephone Company. She met
Orville Tweeten at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake when he
was in the US Navy. They were united in marriage on March 4,
1946 in Mason City. To this union three children were born.
The couple made their home in Forest City where Wanda worked
at Great Western and the Forest City Summit.
She was a member of the
Immanuel Lutheran Church and loved being in the kitchen
helping to serve for funerals and other events. She enjoyed
picnics at the lake, eating at her favorite restaurants and
playing cards with her friends. Wanda treasured time spent
with her family and especially her dear childhood friend,
Pat Haensch.
Wanda is survived by her
three children, Ann (Gary) Gerdes of Forest City, Linda
Tweeten and Sue Stone of Garner and Janet (Lynn) Richards of
Des Moines; three grandchildren, Jodie Steen, Ryan Richards
and Cassie Davenport; four great-grandchildren, Nicole
Steen, Danny Davenport, Cobe Eischen and Emily Davenport;
sisters-in-law, Arlene Grimm, Kay Larson and Darlene Tweeten
and a brother-in-law, Lehman (Delores) Tweeten.
Wanda was preceded in
death by her parents; step-mother, Beulah Whorley; husband,
Orville in 1999; brother, William (Bill) Whorley; sister,
Marion Hornberger; brothers-in-law, Walden Tweeten, Melvin
Larsen and Bob Grimm; and sister-in-law, Alice Worley.

Thomas E. Nelson
December 7, 2011
Thomas E. Nelson, 62, of Mason City, formerly of Forest
City, passed away on Tuesday, November 22, 2011, at the
Mercy Medical Center in Mason City.
A memorial service was
held on Saturday, November 26, at the Immanuel Lutheran
Church in Forest City.
Thomas Edwin Nelson,
was born on October 28, 1949, to Edwin and Beulah Frakes
Nelson in Luverne, Minnesota. He graduated from the
Jasper High School in 1967 and from the Canby Vocational
School. He proudly served in the US Army during the
Vietnam Conflict. He was united in marriage to Janice
Carlson on March 25, 1972 in Jasper, Minnesota. Tom
served in the Forest City Police Reserve for 15 years
and was a mechanic for the City of Forest City for 20
years.
Tom was an avid
fisherman and with his wife owned Tom's Tackle for many
years. Tom's many hobbies included hunting, playing
cribbage, collecting John Deere tractors and spending
time with his family and friends. Tom enjoyed many
summers fishing on Clearwater Lake in Minnesota and will
be missed by his Annandale Family.
He is survived by his
loving wife of 39 years, Jan; four daughters, Jenny
(Andrew) McIntyre of Center Point, Carrie Nelson and Ben
Eberly of Sheffield, Amy (Jeffery) Thompson of Mason
City and Rachel (Michael) Frey of St. Peter, Minnesota;
eight grandchildren, Jessica, Austin, Hailey, Dillon,
Liam, Reid, Noah and Payton; one brother, James Nelson
of Jasper, Minnesota; and Hailey's father, Tony Lock.
Tom was preceded in
death by his parents; one grandson, Cody Thompson; and
one nephew, Jesse Nelson.

Lois G. Tanner, 83, of Mason City, died on Monday, November
28, 2011, at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Hospice Chaplain officiating. Interment was in the Memorial

Lois G. Foss, was born on
June 5, 1928 in Forest City, the daughter of Clairence and
Alice (Thompson) Foss. She was raised and attended school in
Forest City. She was united in marriage to Walter Tanner Sr.
on April 5, 1950 in the Bethel Lutheran Church in Joice and
to this union two children were born. Lois enjoyed
collecting dolls and anything else she found interesting.
She loved all types pets and they were a very special part
of her life. Lois was a people person and loved engaging in
a conversation with almost anyone. Lois's family was very
important to her and she loved the times she spent with
them, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her
husband, Walter Tanner Sr. of Mason City; children, Walter
Tanner Jr. and wife, Sue of Mason City and Alice Stille and
husband, Bruce of Mason City; 6 grandchildren, Kim Traurig
and husband, Brian, Tammy Johnson and husband, Jason,
Heather Gansen and husband, Jeff, Alex Stille and wife,
Jennifer, Troy Stille and Jessica Stille; 8
great-grandchildren; 3 sisters, Clarice Fank, Mary Starn and
June Gibbs; and several nieces and nephews.

Margaret Larson

Margaret Larson, 89, of Britt, passed away on Monday,
November 28, 2011, at the Westview Center in Britt.
Funeral services were held
on Friday, December 2, at 10:30 a.m., at the Evangelical
Free Church in Britt, with Pastor Mark Stevens officiating.
Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery in Britt.
Margaret Janette (Indvik)
Larson, was born on January 23, 1922, on the family farm
west of Forest City, the daughter of Oscar and Myrtle (Groath)
Indvik. Margaret's father died when she was seven years old.
She began her early education in Colorado Springs, Colorado
and continued in the rural schools of Linden Township,
attended the Forest City High School and graduated from the
Thompson High School in 1940. After graduation, she was
employed at the Palace of Sweets in Forest City. During
World War II she went to Burbank, California, where she was
employed with Vega Aircraft making parts for the B-17
airplane. Following the war, she was an operator for the
Central Iowa Telephone Company in Forest City.
On February 14, 1948,
Margaret was united in marriage to Leo A. Larson at the
family farm northwest of Britt. She was a homemaker and
partner in the farming operation. She enjoyed spending time
with her family and friends. Margaret will be remembered for
her cooking and baking abilities, including her famous
macaroni and cheese and Norwegian kringla.
She was a member of the
Evangelical Free Church, Women's Missionary Society, Britt
Women's Club and often hosted the neighborhood Bible study.
Margaret is survived by
her two daughters, Janell Salcedo of Owatonna, Minnesota and
Janice Turner of West Des Moines; four grandchildren,
Natalee Thompson of Greenville, South Carolina, Brandon
Salcedo of Plymouth, Minnesota, Jennifer (Tony) Utley of New
Hampton and Kevin (Jillian) Turner of Huntsville, Alabama;
seven great-grandchildren; sister, Anna Mae Orvick of Britt;
sisters-in-law, Betty Indvik of Forest City and Grace Larson
of Kanawha; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death
by her husband, Leo on December 31, 2000; her parents; two
brothers, Loren Indvik and Oscar Indvik, Jr.

Donald P. Harman

South Kansas City, Missouri-Donald Paul Harman, passed away
on Tuesday, November 29, 2011.
A public memorial service
celebrating Don's life will be held at a later time.
Donald Harman, lived in
South Kansas City, Missouri and was born in Marietta, Ohio
on May 8, 1970. Don was the youngest of three children born
to Gordon Stanley Harman and the late Harriett Jo Harman.
Don graduated from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Don had
always wanted to become a meteorologist. In fact, as a young
boy he asked for items such as rain gauges and barometers as
gifts. After graduation from college, Don worked as a
meteorologist at WTAP in West Virginia, KIMT in Mason City
and WOWK in Huntington, West Virginia, before moving to
Kansas City. In 1999, Don became the FOX4 morning show
meteorologist at WDAF-TV4 and had a large following over the
last eleven years.
Don leaves behind the two
loves of his life, wife Monica and young daughter, Avery Jo;
his father, Gordon Stanley Harman of Marietta, Ohio; sister,
Hattie Harman (John) Sayre of Greenwood, Indiana; brother,
Gordon (Susan) Harman of Bay Village, Ohio; and nieces,
nephews, extended family and a multitude of friends.
