Fred H. Smith
Sr.

Fred
H. Smith Sr., 72, of Curtiss, Wisconsin, formerly of
Thompson, died on Friday, June 3, 2011, at his home
surrounded by his loving family and Hope Hospice.
Funeral services were
held on Tuesday, June 7, at the Hemer Funeral Home,
Medford, Wisconsin.
Fred was born on
January 12, 1939 in Hancock County, to Marlor J. Smith
and Lucy Caudell. He graduated from the Thompson High
School. He was married to Sharon Peterson and they later
divorced. He married Marie Peterson and they divorced.
He married Latonia J. Chenier on October 10, 1998 in
Blair, Nebraska. Fred owned and operated a crop farm for
18 years. He then sold life insurance and then managed
RV Parks in Iowa and Nebraska for a number of years. In
December of 2005, he and Toni moved to their current
residence where he worked at the Dorchester Coop for a
couple of years
Fred is survived by
his wife, Latonia "Toni" Smith of Curtiss; children,
Dawn (Dave) Gilbert of Swaledale, Fred Allan (Dea) Smith
Jr. of Knoxville and Misty Smith of Monett, Missouri;
stepchildren, Ashley McBride of Altoona, Steven McBride
of Knoxville and Michael McBride of Knoxville;
grandchildren, Angela Olsson of Owatonna, Minnesota,
Shelly (Jerry) Hansen of Owatonna, Minnesota, Troy
Gunderson of Owatonna, Minnesota, Taylor Luncford of
Monett, Missouri and Amy Gunderson of Mason City; six
great-grandchildren; sisters, Coleen (Bob) Devin of
Webber Falls, Oklahoma, Zudavee Holland of Forest City
and Madliene (Steven) Jensen of Robin, Iowa.
He was preceded in
death by his parents; four brothers; and two sisters in
infancy.

Roger Spear
June 15, 2011
Funeral services for Roger Spear, 59, of Woden, were
held at 10:30 a.m., on Tuesday, June 7, at the Immanuel
Lutheran Church in rural Titonka, with the Rev. Bob
Wolfert officiating. Burial was in the Immanuel Lutheran
Cemetery. Roger died on Saturday, June 4, 2011, at his
residence near Woden.
Roger William Spear,
was born on November 24, 1951 in Algona, the son of
Robert and Florence (Van Hove) Spear. He grew up in
rural Titonka and attended school in Titonka, graduating
from the Titonka High School in 1970. After his
schooling he attended Iowa State University, while also
farming. On June 23, 1973, Roger was united in marriage
to Judy Schmidt at the Immanuel Lutheran Church. After
their marriage they lived and farmed on Judy's family
farm near Woden. While continuing to farm, they also ran
The Barn at Gruis Recreation Area for three years.
One of the favorite
things Roger enjoyed doing was spoiling his
granddaughters, which he was very good at. He was also
known as quite the practical jokester and also enjoyed
playing golf, cards, woodworking and his guns. He was a
member of Ducks Unlimited and the Immanuel Lutheran
Church, where he served on the church council. In the
past he served as a school board member, on the Gruis
Recreation Board and the ambulance crew.
He is survived by his
wife, Judy of Woden; daughter, Amy and Scott Luedke of
Elgin, Illinois; granddaughters, Avery and Tatum;
mother, Florence Spear of Titonka; mother-in-law,
Marilyn Schmidt of Mason City; brother, Kenneth and Debi
of Wesley; sister, Sharon and Allen Divis of LuVerne;
nieces and nephews, Brennan and Eric Spear, Philip,
Matthew and Wendy Divis and Brandon Millard;
sister-in-law, Tammy and Brian Millard of Mason City.
He was preceded in
death by his father, Bob H. Spear; father-in-law, Ernie
Schmidt; and sister-in-law, Deborah Schmidt.
Arrangements were
handled by the Oakcrest Funeral Services of Titonka.

Loretta Anderson
June 29, 2011
Loretta Anderson, 93, formerly of Forest City, died on
Friday, June 17, 2011, at the Northern Mahaska Nursing and
Rehab Center in Oskaloosa.
A Forest City resident for
several years she cherished time spent with her many special
friends - going out to eat and playing cards or just
visiting. A member of the St. James Catholic Church, she
also valued her spiritual life and friends in the church
community.
Survivors include
her children, son, Gary Anderson (Sheri) of Des Moines and
daughters, Kathy Sirovy (Richard Kelling) of Forest City and
Karen Gerlach (Jurgen) of Radford, Virginia; grandchildren,
Jim Sirovy of Oskaloosa, Doug (Carol) Anderson of Waterloo,
Jeff Anderson of Des Moines, Lori Gerlach of Radford,
Virginia; great-grandsons, Nolan and Nick Anderson of
Waterloo; sister-in-law, Carribelle Witt; and several nieces
and nephews.
Preceding her in death
were her parents; husband; two sisters; and a brother.

Jannethe E. Solyst
June 29, 2011
Jannethe E. Solyst, 104, of Leland, died on Saturday, June
18, 2011, at the Good Samaritan Care Center in Forest City.
Funeral services were held
at 11:00 a.m., on Friday, June 24, at the Immanuel Lutheran
Church in Forest City, with the Rev. Rod Hopp officiating.
Burial was in the Oakland Cemetery in Forest City.
Jannethe
E. Solyst, was born on March 4, 1907 in McCallsburg, the
daughter of John E. and Minnie (Holm) Solyst. She was
baptized in the Bethel Lutheran Church in McCallsburg. As a
small child she moved with her family to Belmond, where she
attended kindergarten. The family later moved to Forest
City, where she attended grade school and high school,
graduating from the Forest City High School. She was
confirmed at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City.
She continued her
education at Waldorf College. Upon graduation, she attended
St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, graduating with a
B.A. Degree in English. She took additional business classes
at Waldorf College and a Library Science course at the
University of Minnesota. Jannethe taught in high schools in
Minnesota and Iowa as a drama coach and music director. She
coached plays, directed high school girl's chorus and
trained speech students. During World War II, she worked in
Washington D.C. and Minneapolis, Minnesota, where she held
business positions in several places. Following her teaching
career, she worked for a time at City Hall in Forest City.
She was a member of the
Immanuel Lutheran Church, where she was active in Circle and
WELCA and belonged to the Twentieth Century Club in Forest
City.
Jannethe
is survived by a sister, Wilma Belsheim of Leland; 2
brothers, Jalmer Solyst of Leland and Ephraim Solyst of
Kerkhoven, Minnesota; seven nieces and nephews and several
great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death
by her parents; a brother, Holm; and a sister, Harriet.

Cindy Nugent
June 29, 2011
Cindy Nugent, 48, of Forest City, died on Thursday, June 23,
2011, at the Muse Norris Hospice in Mason City.
As per her request, her
body has been cremated. It was her wish that her ashes be
scattered with the ashes of her mother and grandmother in
Jenny Wylie State Park near Prestonburg, Kentucky. A
memorial service will be held at a later date. |
Betty Elman
June 29, 2011
Betty Elman, 83, of Buffalo Center, died on Thursday, June
23, 2011, at the Titonka Care Center in Titonka.
Services were held on
Monday, June 27, at 2:00 p.m., at the First Congregational
Church in Buffalo Center. Burial was in the Graceland
Cemetery. Visitation was held on Sunday, June 26, at the
First Congregational Church in Buffalo Center. |
Sylvia B. Kuns
June 29, 2011
Sylvia
Bernice Kuns, of Clear Lake, died on Friday, June 24, 2011,
at the Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake.
Funeral services will be
held at 2:00 p.m., on Thursday June 30, at the Evangelical
Free Church, Clear Lake, with the Revs. Dan Long and Pastor
Kent Wagner officiating. Visitation will be from 4-7:00
p.m., on Wednesday, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel
and continue one hour before the services on Thursday.
Burial will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.
Family suggests memorials to the Evangelical Free Church
Building Project in memory of Sylvia and Paul Kuns.
Sylvia was born on July 8,
1915 in Williams, the daughter of Ben and Julia (Peterson)
Hall. She had five brothers and a sister. At the age of 16,
she graduated from the Forest City High School where she was
both class president and valedictorian. She received a one
year scholarship to Waldorf College. Sylvia met Paul Kuns at
a Baptist Youth gathering and they married on June 21, 1934.
After farming in Winnebago County for many years, they moved
to a dairy farm near Albert Lea, Minnesota, with their 5
children and several foster children.
After retirement they
eventually settled in Clear Lake. Here, they joined the
Evangelical Free Church where they sang in the choir and
taught Sunday School classes. Sylvia started a "Charm
School" for young girls from the Sunday School, teaching
social skills, including good manners and poise. Later, she
served as the church secretary for several years.
Sylvia is survived by
three children, Lois (Joseph) West Duffy of Afton,
Minnesota, Stuart Kuns (Judy Jefson) of Ventura and Elaine
Kuns of Waterloo; 16 grandchildren, Terry (Susan) Legge of
Des Moines, Michael (Monica) Legge of Garner, Robert (Ruth)
Legge of Garner, Lisa Legge (Craig Lassig) of Minneapolis,
Tracy (Sharla) West of Lennox, South Dakota, Brady West
(Mary Jo Kingston) of Edina, Minnesota, Ryan West (Nicole
Gieske) of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, Paul D. Kuns of Carrol,
Ohio, Michelle Kuns (Bill Brown) of Fredonia, New York, John
Kuns of Owatonna, Minnesota, Amy Kuns of Clear Lake and
Tammy Kuns (Brandon Ellingson) of Ottumwa; three grandsons
serving in the United States Air Force, Jay (Kelly) Kuns,
Zachary (Kelsey) Kuns, William (Amanda) Kuns and Benjamin
Kuns of Minneapolis; 28 great-grandchildren, David, Katie,
Chris, Charlie, Mark, Tom and Jim, Jennifer, Andrew and
Sarah Legge; Sean Lassig; Gordon (Angela), Jessie and
Traesha and Nicholas West; Michael and Kira Kuns, Emily and
Matthew Brown; Haley Kuns; Cooper, Kirsten, Madison,
Benjamin, Evan, Parker, Levi, and Mackenzie Kuns; sister,
Doris (LeRoy) Thompson of Forest City; and sisters-in-law,
Marj Hall of Forest City and Neda Hall of Denver, Colorado.
Sylvia was preceded in
death by her parents; husband, Paul in 1991; daughter, Sue
Legge in 1995; son, David Kuns in 1999; and brothers,
Melvin, Buford, Elmer, Gordon and Benjamin.

Jimmy Davis, 61, of Forest City, died on Saturday, June 25,
2011, at his home.
Memorial services will be
held at a later date in Oklahoma. There will be no

Richard D. Harmon
July 6, 2011
Richard D. Harmon, 76, of Harris, formerly of Forest City,
died on Monday, June 27, 2011, at his home in Harris.
Funeral services were held
on Saturday, July 2, at the Forest City Civic Auditorium in
Forest City. Interment was in the Oakland Cemetery in Forest
City.
Richard Dean Harmon, was
born on December 13, 1934, to Emmlet and Pauline (Aasland)
Harmon on a farm place near Joice. He attended school at a
country school near Joice, also attending school in Lake
Mills and graduating from the Ventura High School in
Ventura. Dick made his home with Ed and Ardith Furness
during his junior and senior years of high school after his
father's death; they took him in and treated him as their
own son. Dick appreciated them more than words can tell.
From that particular time in his life he has five
"brothers", Dennis, Marlin, Don, Ralph and Roger Furness.
Dick served in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1958. Dick married
LaVonne Johnson on January 26, 1963. They had three
children, Kelly (Todd) Bram, Kevin (Jody) Harmon and Todd
(Kellie) Harmon. Dick and LaVonne had a wonderful marriage
which ended due to LaVonne's death in 2000.
Dick spent most of his
working career at Winnebago Industries. From there he worked
at AACON Auto Transport where he dispatched Winnebago
Motorhomes for deliver to dealers and at 3M Company. He
finished his working career as a tour guide for Winnebago
Industries until he retired in 2002.
Dick met Judy Siemers in
2002 and they were married on January 4, 2003. They spent
eight wonderful years together.
Dick is survived by his
wife, Judy; daughter, Kelly (Todd) Bram and grandchildren,
Andrew (Janelle) Bram, Ben Bram and Ali Bram; son, Kevin
(Jody) Harmon and grandchildren, Ashley Harmon, Tyler
Harmon, Mitch Bartleson and Paige Bartleson; son, Todd
(Kellie) Harmon and grandchildren, Jessica Harmon, Joni
Nelson and Jessica Nelson; step-son, Lonny (Evadne) Siemers
and their children, Travis Siemers and Troy Siemers;
step-daughter, Laurie (Bruce) Wemette and their children,
Kayla and Lynsey; brothers, David (Rowena) Iverson, Duaine
(Ellen) Harmon, Darrell Harmon, Greg (Lu) Tarr; sister,
Dorene (Gerald) Helin; two sisters-in-law, Durene (Don)
Harmon and Trudy (Dean) Harmon; two great-grandchildren,
Riley Bram (Andrew and Janell) and Jaidyn Harmon (Ashley);
and a host of other relatives and wonderful friends.
Dick was preceded in death
by his parents; his first wife, LaVonne; two brothers, Don
Harmon and Dean Harmon; one sister, Pat; step-dad, Robert
Tarr; and surrogate parents, Ed and Ardith Furness and their
son, Marlin Furness.

Arlene S. Rueber

Arlene S. Rueber, 82, of Oelwein, died on Thursday, June 30,
2011, at the Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo.
Funeral services were held
on Thursday, July 7, at the St. Peter Lutheran Church,
Westgate, with the Rev. Herbert C. Mueller, III officiating.
Interment was in the St. Peter Lutheran Cemetery, rural
Westgate. A memorial fund has been established for the St.
Peter Lutheran Church and the American Diabetes Association.
Arlene Sophia Jesse, was
born on December 21, 1928 at rural Sumner, the daughter of
Henry and Bertha (Westendorf) Jesse. She received her
education from the Alpha School. Arlene was united in
marriage to Max Carl Rueber on August 25, 1949, at the St.
Peter Lutheran Church in Westgate. Max and Arlene worked and
raised their family on a farm between Maynard and Westgate.
Arlene moved to Oelwein in 1996.
She was a lifelong member
of the St. Peter Lutheran Church. Arlene enjoyed cooking,
baking, reading, crossword puzzles, playing cards,
crocheting and spending time with her family and friends.
Arlene is survived by her
12 children, Carlene Seghezzi of Santa Rosa, California,
Dale (Mary) Rueber of Westgate, Dianne (Rich) Murrow of
Downers Grove, Illinois, Mardell (Jim) Reisner of Oelwein,
Roger (Lou Ann) Rueber of Oelwein, Linda Rueber of Leland,
Bryan (Doris) Rueber of Oelwein, Rhonda (Jerry) Miller of
West Union, Carol (Dennis) Lau of Concord, California, Kent
Rueber of Westgate, Karen (Frank) Schultz of Dunkerton and
Brent Rueber of Westgate; 21 grandchildren; several
great-grandchildren; her brother, Arnold Jesse of Oelwein;
and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death
by her parents; her husband, Max on January 22, 2000; and
two sons, Ronald in infancy and Dennis in 1987. |
