Donald Rosen, 78

June 5, 2007

Donald Eli Curtis Rosen, 78, of Lake Havasu City, Arizona, formerly of the Crystal Lake, Iowa area, passed away on Saturday, May 5, 2007, in Lake Havasu City, Arizona.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, May 15, at the Olinger Mortuary in Wheat Ridge, Colorado, with Rev, James Cuneo officiating. Interment followed in the Crown Hill Cemetery in Wheat Ridge, Colorado.

Donald Eli Curtis Rosen, the son of William and Bernice Tesdahl Curtis and adopted son of Ole and Bertha Vorland Rosen, was born on February 23, 1929 in Buffalo Center, Iowa. He attended the Crystal Lake school before entering the Army. Donald was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army in the Korean War.

Donald was united in marriage to Evelyn Nedved at the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan, Iowa. Following their marriage they moved to Des Moines and later to Arvada, Colorado. He worked as a clerk for the Department of Interior in Denver for 32 years. Six years ago they moved to Lake Havasu City, Arizona.

Donald is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Evelyn Curtis of Lake Havasu City, Arizona; three sons, David (Karen) Curtis of Broomfield, Colorado, Anthony (Debra) Curtis of Arvada, Colorado and Kevin (Sandy) Curtis of Lake Havasu City, Arizona; one daughter, Yvonne (Lee) Demers of Ashtabula, Ohio; 13 grandchildren, Cory (Nikki) Curtis, Mickey (Heather) Curtis, Andrew Curtis, Brenda (Nick) Miller, John Phelps Jr., Melissa (Anthony) Ortega, Brian (Darcy) Curtis, Laura Curtis, Krista and Dalton Curtis, Breanna, Ashley and Christina Demers; two step-grandchildren, John and Robert Fletcher; five great-grandchildren, Harley Phelps, Nathan Harder, Dylan Curtis, Reegan Curtis and Arianna Ortega; and step-brother, Orlyn (Sharon) Rosen of Scarville, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Marty Jendro; and one brother, Richard Rosen.

Mae Lackore, 100

May 29, 2007

Mae Lackore, age 100, of Forest City, died on Monday, May 7, 2007, at the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, June 2, 2007, at 1:00 p.m., at the Shelter House at the Pilot Knob State Park, east of Forest City. Pastor Barb Spaulding of the Immanuel Lutheran Church, will be officiating. A private family inurnment will take place at a later date at Rose Hill Cemetery in Thompson.

The family requests that memorials be directed to the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City.

"Mae" (Taylor, Abbott) Lackore, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Monday, May 7, 2007, at the age of 100. Mae was born on January 25, 1907 in Toledo, Iowa. In 1916, Mae moved to the Forest City area, currently Pilot Knob State Park. She attended Forest City Country Schools and baby sat for many families in the area. As a young adult, Mae lived in an apartment and worked at the Forest City Canning Factory.

On March 6, 1932, Mae married Lorn H. Abbott. To this union was born Marian in 1934 and Marvin in 1940. Mae and Lorn farmed in the Forest City area until 1958 when Lorn suddenly passed away. In 1963, Mae married Clarence Lackore. They lived in Hayfield, Iowa until 1970 when they moved to Forest City. Clarence passed away in 1986.

Mae lived at the Town Square apartments in Forest City from 1985 to 1999 when she moved briefly to the Lake Mills Care Center. Mae then moved to the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City in October, 2000, living there until her death.

Mae is survived by her daughter, Marian (Jim) Narveson; grandsons, Eric (Jane) Narveson and Kurt (Karen) Narveson; great-grandchildren, Andrew, Thomas and Kiersten Narveson all of the Santa Clara, California area.

Mae is also survived by her son, Marvin (Patty) Abbott; grandchildren, Anna (James) Thorson, Sara Ewing, Howard (Jodi) Abbott, Christopher Wonsmos, Peter Wonsmos and Mathew Abbott (Jenny Maddox); great-grandchildren, Samantha and Bart Dugan, Seth, Todd and Tyler Thorson, Ashley Ewing, Jacob, Joshua and Madison Abbott, Allyssa, Taylor, Bethany, Megan, Andrew and Jack Wonsmos. Mae is also survived by many nieces, nephews and friends.

Mae was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Lorn H. Abbott and Clarence Lackore; and grandson, Merle Abbott.

Alvin S. Klipping, 92

May 17, 2007

Alvin S. Klipping, age 92, formerly of Forest City, residing in Fort Myers, Florida, died on Monday, May 7, 2007, at the Hope Hospice in Fort Myers.

A visitation was held on Friday, May 11, at the funeral home. A Graveside service was held on Friday, at the Madison Township Cemetery in Forest City, with Pastor Wayne Hagen officiating.

Following burial the family invited friends to the United Methodist Church for a luncheon and time of fellowship. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be directed to the Hospice of North Iowa. The Petersen Lund Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Alvin Klipping, was born on December 9, 1914 in Forest City, the son of Elmer and Ida Klipping. Alvin met his wife, Elvera and they were married on September 1, 1936. He farmed in Iowa until he retired in 1978.

The couple moved to Ft. Myers, Florida, in January of 1990, where they resided until his death. Alvin enjoyed gardening, fishing and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his children, Ron of Seattle, Washington, Ruth (John) Kubinski of Ft. Myers, Florida, Francis (Robyn) of Mandeville, Louisiana, Fern (Art) Symens of Madison Lake, Minnesota, Linda Eland of Ft. Myers, Florida and Donna (Jeff) Tollefson of Austin, Minnesota; 17 grandchildren; and 33 great-grandchildren.

Alvin was preceded in death by his wife, Elvera; his parents; and a sister. He also lost his best friend, a dog named Chad.

Merlyn R. Elman, 78

May 17, 2007

Merlyn Raymond Elman, born September 18, 1928, on a farm near Lakota, passed away on Friday, May 11, 2007.

A Funeral Ceremony was held on Tuesday, May 15, 2007, at the North Iowa Community School Auditorium in Buffalo Center, Iowa. Interment was in the Graceland Cemetery, Buffalo Center, Iowa. The Winter Funeral Home and Cremation Service was in charge of the arrangements.

Merlyn was the eldest son of Raymond and Della (Harms) Elman. His brother, Richard, was born in 1930. Merlyn graduated from the Buffalo Center High School in 1946. He began his newspaper career in 1951 at the Buffalo Center Tribune. He was a linotype operator and commercial printer for 13 years and then moved up to shop foreman. In 1964, he became a partner at the Tribune. He then became editor and publisher in 1970 until his death.

He married Betty Lou Bussa on June 14, 1953 in Armstrong, Iowa. Their first child, Terry Raymond (1954) married Joyce Culbertson in 1977. They live near Buffalo Center. Their second child, Susan Lynn (1957) married Steve Risius in 1976. They live in Burnsville, Minnesota.

Terry and Joyce have four children, Derrick (married to Amy) of Iowa Falls, Jason of Algona, Kalli Jo of Buffalo Center and Kristina of Buffalo Center. Susan and Steve have two children, Sarah (fiancée, Ryan Dybevik) of St. Louis Park, Minnesota and Shannon of St. Cloud, Minnesota.

Merlyn was a loving and caring husband, father, and grandfather. The family has many happy memories of their times together.

Over the years, Merlyn received many awards for his contributions to the newspaper and to the community. One of Merlyn's greatest pleasures was reporting on high school athletics and other school related activities. He also enjoyed playing golf with friends and family. He was very active in the community and the First Congregational Church.

In January 2007, Merlyn received the diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. Following surgery, he spent several months at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota and the North Iowa Mercy Hospital in Mason City. He came to the Buffalo Center Timely Mission Nursing Home on April 23. He passed away on Friday, May 11, with his wife, children, grandchildren, and brother all present.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister-in-law, Alice Elman; and nephew, Michael Elman.

Della T. Vaage, 98

May 22, 2007

Della T. Vaage, age 98, of Forest City, died on Wednesday, May 16, 2007, at the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, May 22, at the Fertile Lutheran Church in Fertile, with Lay Pastor David Halverson and Pastor Robert Vaage officiating. Burial was in the Brush Point Cemetery in rural Fertile. Visitation was held on Monday, May 21, at the funeral home and continued an hour prior to the service at the church. The Petersen Lund Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Della T. Vaage, was born on a farm in Hardin County, Iowa, north of McCallsburg, the daughter of Thomas and Dorthea (Tveit) Chentland. She received her education in a rural school near her home. She was confirmed in the Lutheran faith on November 4, 1923 at the Zion Lutheran Church near Garden City, Iowa.

On December 21, 1929, Della was united in marriage to Carl Vaage in Randall, Iowa. The couple farmed in the Forest City and Fertile areas.

Della was a busy mother and farmer's wife. She managed a large chicken business, using egg money to buy school supplies for the kids. She raised a big garden and canned produce and meat. The coffee pot was always on at Della's and she loved to cook and care for family and friends. Her children remember that she made the best bread in north Iowa.

Carl and Della moved to Forest City in 1967. She enjoyed working at the Good Samaritan Center. She refinished furniture and enjoyed doing light carpentry work. She was a member of the Fertile Lutheran Church and was active in Ladies Aid there for many years.

Della entered the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City in June of 1999. Della went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, May 16, 2007, at the age of 98 years.

Della is survived by her children, LaVern Vaage (Karen) of Mason City, Donna Nelson (Larry) of Hanlontown and Larry Vaage (Shirley) of Forest City, grandchildren, Diana (Robb) Horn, Susan Feight, Mark (Jan) Vaage, Sandra (Gary) Sharp, Douglas Vaage, Robert C. (DeeAnn) Vaage, Jeff (Beth) Vaage, Laura Shropshire, Marie (Hugh) Webb, Christine (Ned Fagg) Nelson, Cheryl (David) Kapka, Lonny (Myrtle) Nelson and Allison (Chris) Feldhacker, 27 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Betty Vaage of Mason City; and sister-in-law, Dena Rollefson of Forest City.

Della was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Carl in 1987;son, Duane in 1979; five sisters; and three brothers.

John G. Rovang, 91

May 22, 2007

John G. Rovang, 91, of Joice, died on Saturday, May 19, 2007, at his home in rural Joice.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Thursday, May 24, at the Fertile Lutheran Church in Fertile, with Lay Pastor David Halverson and Pastor Dan Burton officiating. Burial will be in the Beaver Creek Cemetery in rural Kensett. Visitation will be from 4-7:00 p.m., on Wednesday, May 23, at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home, Forest City, and one hour prior to the service at the church. The family requests in lieu of flowers, memorials be directed to the Fertile Lutheran Church, Beaver Creek Cemetery Society or the Hospice of North Iowa.

John Glen Rovang, was born on November 21, 1915 in rural Fertile Township, the son of Renus G. and Betsy (Rusley) Rovang. He was baptized and confirmed at the Beaver Creek Lutheran Church, rural Joice. He received his elementary education in a rural school in Fertile Township and graduated from the Lake Mills High School in 1934. He attended Luther College and Iowa State University.

He began his teaching career at New Providence, Iowa, where he was High School Vocational Agricultural Instructor. He later taught Vocational Agriculture and the Veterans Agriculture Program in the Forest City School System and the North Iowa Area Community College, and was also engaged in farming.

On July 6, 1942, he was married to Ruth Ward of Swaledale, Iowa. They celebrated 64 years of marriage in 2006.

John served on several state and local committees. He served as president of the Worth County Farm Bureau, and president of the Worth County Historical Society. He served several years as Worth County Soil Conservation Commissioner and was on the County FmHA Board. In 1988, he was appointed by Governor Branstad to a 6-year term on the Iowa State Judicial Selection Commission and also served as an Older Iowa Legislative Representative to the Iowa Legislature.

He served as director on the Iowa State Poultry Board and was named Iowa Master Egg Producer in 1961. John was a member of the Winnebago Area Retired Teachers, where he served as vice president and legislative chair. John was a member of the Beaver Creek Lutheran Church where he served as congregation president, Sunday School Teacher, member of the Cemetery Board and held several other Church offices. After Beaver Creek's closing, he became a member of the Fertile Lutheran Church.

John and Ruth enjoyed traveling and made several trips to Europe to visit the areas of their ancestors. John was especially interested in genealogy and researched his family tree back to the 1600's.

John was an avid reader and had a special interest in the history of his community and Beaver Creek Lutheran Church. He researched the history of Beaver Creek after its closing and wrote a history of his life and family. His hobby included antiques and he restored several antique and collector cars. He served as secretary of the North Iowa Vintage Auto Society. John was blessed with a special gift of memory and was often contacted by others regarding information on past historical events.

John was a devout Christian man and loved his family. He is survived by his wife Ruth; sons, Douglas (Rosaline) of Rochester, Minnesota and Richard of Eagan, Minnesota; daughter, Donna (Brent Orton) of Mason City; and six grandchildren, Michelle (Bryan) Burke, Ann (Matt) Wolff, Mark John, Matthew, Chrismar and Kiersten Orton; and two great-grandchildren, Nicholas Burke and Abigail Wolff.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Mark John; brother, Marvin; and sister, Jeanette.

Mary L. Thompson, 66

May 22, 2007

Mary Louise Thompson, 66, of Lake Mills, died on Saturday, May 19, 2007, at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Following a private family memorial service, condolences with the family was held on Monday, May 21, at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home in Lake Mills.

Mary Louise Eenhuis, was born on December 23, 1940 in rural Forest City, Hancock County, Iowa, to Louis and Elva (Shelton) Eenhuis. She attended country school and graduated from the Forest City High School in 1958. She attended nursing school and became a registered nurse.

On October 3, 1961, she was married to Marshall Thompson at her parents' home near Forest City. They lived in Missouri and then moved back to Iowa in 1963. Marshall and Mary lived in Mason City, Miller and Hayfield before they finally moved to Lake Mills in 1966. Mary worked as an RN at the Lake Mills Care Center until 1985.

She enjoyed reading, baking, gardening, and spending time with her three grandchildren.

She is survived by her loving husband of 45 years, Marshall of Lake Mills; daughter, Sherylee, and her husband, Terry Gasper of Lake Mills; son, Travis Thompson of Lake Mills; three grandchildren, Tyler and Marissa Gasper and Corey Knutson, all of Lake Mills; three sisters, Esther Kirschbaum of Leland, Jeanette Dodd of Lake Mills and Joretta Riggle of Glenville, Minnesota; a brother, Mike Eenhuis of Wakefield, Kansas; sister-in-law, Sharon and her husband, Mike Walsh of Mason City; brother-in-law, Richard Thompson and his wife, Wilma of Forest City; along with many nieces and nephews.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Elva Eenhuis; two sisters, Margaret Nielsen and Lila Nielsen; two brothers, Robert Eenhuis and Lyle Eenhuis; brother-in-law, Steven Thompson; and an infant son, Joseph.

McKayla Joy Aukes, 9

May 29, 2007

McKayla Joy Aukes, age 9, of Forest City, died on Monday, May 21, 2007, of complications due to a heart defect.

Funeral services were held on Friday, May 25, at the United Methodist Church in Forest City, with Pastor Lois Abel officiating. Burial was in the Klemme Cemetery in Klemme. Visitation was held on Thursday, at the funeral home and an hour prior to the services at the church. The Petersen Lund Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

McKayla Joy Aukes, was born in Minneapolis, on October 8, 1997, the daughter of Mark and Ranae (Lange) Aukes. She was baptized in the Methodist faith and was attending the third grade at the Forest City Elementary School.

McKayla was a kind-hearted young girl who loved her family and lived her brief time here to the fullest. There were so many things she enjoyed doing, spending time with Grandma Betty in Klemme and playing with her cats and pet rabbit, Blackie, sleep-overs with her friends, taking the whole family out to the movies, spending time with her cousins and riding horses.

She liked hearing stories about when she was "little" and always wanted to hear stories from when mom and dad were "little". She loved all the trips for Summer School and was active in Junior Theater in the summertime. In 2006, she was chosen "Little Miss Puckerbrush" and got to ride in the parade.

A family trip to Hawaii in January 2006 was a dream come true for McKayla. She got to see the ocean and go snorkeling, took a helicopter ride around the islands, enjoyed a deep-sea submarine trip, did some horseback riding and splashed in the surf at Waikiki Beach. She attended a Hawaiian Lua and was delighted with all the flowers and dancing.

McKayla is survived by her parents, Mark and Ranae Aukes of Forest City; her sister, Kelley Aukes; nephew, Aiden of Waverly; grandmother, Betty Lange of Garner; "grandma and grandpa", Marvin and Genivieve Dearing of Buffalo Center; uncles, Bert (Barb) Lange, Harlen (Sarah) Aukes, Dennis (Sandy) Aukes and Larry (Debbie) Aukes; aunts, LeAnn Lange and Jeannie (Brad) Grotewold; and many cousins and friends.

McKayla was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Larry Lange; paternal grandparents, Merle Aukes and Inez "Joy" Aukes; and a great-uncle, Roy Aukes.

Helen Dean, 93

June 5, 2007

Helen Mae Dean, 93, passed away on Thursday, May 24, 2007, at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt. 

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, May 29, at 11:00 a.m., at the United Methodist Church in Corwith, with Rev. Allen Poore-Christensen officiating. Burial was in the Corwith Cemetery in Corwith.

Helen Mae Dean, was born on January 15, 1914 at Corwith, to Alvin and Addie Stokesbury Graham. She received her education at the Corwith School. After her schooling, Helen worked as a “choregirl” for a family south of Britt. 

Helen was married to Donald James Dean on February 28, 1933 at Klemme. The couple lived and farmed for a time on a farm on the south edge of Corwith. In 1941, they moved to a farm 5 1/2 miles south of Corwith, where they farmed until their retirement in 1974. Helen and Donald then moved into Corwith.

Helen was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Corwith, where she was a former Sunday School Teacher, was a member of the U.M.W. and had held various district offices, was a former director of the Junior Choir and was active in the various Women's Circles. In her younger years on the farm, Helen was active in 4-H and was a leader of the Boone-Magor 4-H Club for many years. She was a member of the Iowa Federation of Women's Clubs, where she held county and district offices, was a Charter Member of the Iowana Women's Club in Corwith and later joined the Corwith Women's Club, where she was active until her death.

She enjoyed reading and craftwork. For twelve years, Helen and Donald spent their winters in Arizona until 1991.

Helen is survived by her daughter, Judith Johnson and husband, Neil of Gold Canyon, Arizona; three grandchildren, Lance Johnson and wife, Lynn of Lakewood, Colorado, Kent Johnson of Gold Canyon, Arizona and Audra Johnson of Los Angeles, California; and 4 great-grandchildren, Greg, Kyle and Brett Johnson and Aidan Johnson Flynn. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Donald on November 28, 1995; her son, Donald Lee; three brothers, Vernell, Wayne and Harold Graham; and an infant sister.

Robert "Bob" Berhow, 74

May 29, 2007

Bob Berhow, 74, of Garner, died on Sunday, May 27, 2007, under the care of Hospice at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Wednesday, May 30, at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Buffalo Center, with Pastor Perry Aalgaard officiating. Burial will be in the Olena Mound Cemetery in Buffalo Center. Visitation was held from 5-7:00 p.m., on Tuesday, at the Winter Funeral Home in Buffalo Center.

Robert Dean Berhow, was born on February 24, 1933 in Winnebago County, to Roy and Annie (Lamping) Berhow. Bob was baptized in the Lutheran Faith. He graduated from the Buffalo Center High School. Bob farmed near Buffalo Center, worked in construction, and was later employed for 26 years at Winnebago Industries as a supervisor in the Weld Shop. He retired in 1995.

He married Viola Hagenson on March 25, 1953. This marriage was blessed with four children, Gescha, Madonna, Douglas and Tim. He was later divorced. Bob found the love of his life, Linda Burch, and they were married on December 17, 1983.

Bob enjoyed fishing, playing cards and cribbage, and watching and cheering for the Green Bay Packers. He also enjoyed spending time at his lake home in Spirit Lake. Bob particularly enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Bob is survived by his wife, Linda Mae Berhow of Garner; his children, Gescha Schroader of Lake Mills, Madonna Merriam of Forest City, Douglas Robert Berhow and his wife, Janet of Forest City and Timothy Lee Berhow of Bayard; his grandchildren, Cory Alan Gregor and his wife, Emilie, Dallas Lynn Gregor, Andy Lee Gregor, Shane Allen Hill, Angela Kay Merriam, Nicole Marie Merriam, James Thomas Merriam and Sarah Nicole Berhow; his great-grandchildren, Gaven Alan Gregor, Graysen Dean Gregor, Jacob Ryan Merriam, Dylan Thomas Merriam, Madison Kay Merriam and Bryce Allen Merriam; his brothers, Donald Wayne Berhow of Buffalo Center, Jimmie Lee Berhow of Ames and Randy Roy Berhow and his wife, Mary of Watertown; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Tom and Cleo; his sister, Shirley; and his granddaughter, Dawn Lunning.

Arden Lium, 81

June 5, 2007

Arden Lium, age 81, of Bricelyn, Minnesota, died on Monday, May 28, 2007, at the Lake Mills Health Care Center in Lake Mills, from complications of an aggressive cancer.

Funeral service were held on Thursday, May 31, 2007, at the Bethany Lutheran Church in rural Frost, Minnesota. Visitation was held on Wednesday, at the Bruss-Heitner Funeral Home in Bricelyn and one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday. Pastor Patricia Hinkie and Pastor Ed Nieman officiated.

Burial was in the Bethany Lutheran Church Cemetery in rural Frost, with Military Honors by the Nels Lee Post # 165 of Bricelyn.

Arden Lium, was born on November 12, 1925 in Seely Township, Faribault County, Minnesota, the son of Melvin and Violet (Brigger) Lium. He attended grade school at the Homedahl Country School until the 8th grade, and then attended the Rake High School. He farmed with his parents until 1951, when he enlisted in the US Army. He spent 18 months in Italy and was honorably discharged in 1954.

On December 26, 1959, Arden was united in marriage to Jean Erickson Anderson at the First Baptist Church in Swea City, Iowa. Arden was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church, the Bricelyn American Legion Post #165 and the Bricelyn Sportsman's Club. Arden enjoyed hunting, fishing, and finishing word puzzles. He had an extensive collection of Polka music and also enjoyed gospel music.

He is survived by his wife, Jean of Bricelyn, Minnesota; one daughter, Susan and her husband, Dale Helgeland of Scarville; one son, Gary Lium of Bricelyn; 5 grandchildren, Amy and husband, Brian Fread of Clear Lake, Kelly Helgeland of Covington, Washington, Adam Helgeland (fiancée, Kendra Pruin) of Forest City and Nicole and Derek Lium of Bricelyn; 2 great-granddaughters, Rowan and Ashlyn Fread of Clear Lake; 2 brothers, Marlin and wife, Betty Lium and Don Lium, all of Bricelyn; along with several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents; and one sister, Arlet Christensen.

Funeral arrangements were made by the Bruss-Heitner Funeral Home in Wells-Minnesota Lake-Bricelyn.
