Edna May Juel
Klaassen, 105
June 26, 2007
Edna May Juel Klaassen, 105, of Clear Lake, died on Saturday
June 23, at the Oakwood Care Facility, where she has resided
for the previous two years.
Funeral service was held
on Tuesday, June 26, at the Ward-Van-Slyke Funeral Home in
Clear Lake, with Lay Leader Jan Tjaden officiating.
Interment was in the Oakland Cemetery, Forest City.
Visitation was held one hour prior to the services.
Edna May Juel Klaassen,
was born on May 13, 1902 in Thompson, the daughter of James
Peter and Clara Johnson Juel of Forest City. She was raised
on the home farm in Forest City with her three sisters and
two brothers where the Forest City Memorial Hospital was
located. She attended Forest City country schools and later
the teachers college in Cedar Falls, to start the first love
of her life “teaching”. She taught in various different
rural schools in central Iowa. There are many who will
always be blessed in having her for a teacher and this
continued throughout her lifetime.
On July 12, 1927, she and
the other “love of her life” George J. Klaassen were united
in marriage at the Little Brown Church in Nashua and they
resided together on their farm in Thompson.
The couple soon moved to
follow Edna's teaching career to Clear Lake and became part
of Clear Lake's development history. She and George owned
and operated Klaassen's Cabana Resort on South Shore Drive
for 12 years.
During her amazing 105
years she and her husband took every opportunity to give to
others. Thirty-five years ago they were founders of the
Clear Lake Beautification Program involving flower beds and
tree planting which continues on today. They continued on
with this through the Kinney-Lindstrom Foundation. Edna
finally turned over the responsibilities at the age of 98.
In 1969, they began
supporting the Rosebud Sioux Indian Mission in South Dakota
and each year journeyed there with food and hospital
supplies. Their support helped to provide scholarships and
educational opportunities for the native Americans. Edna
made her last trip at 100 years of age with the help of many
and the companionship of Barb Dwyer.
For 43 years she was a
part of the American Cancer Society and every fund raiser
that was held. She had a notorious knack for salesmanship as
all will vividly recall. In 1989 she was installed into the
Iowa Volunteer Hall of Fame by Gov. Branstad.
Edna received her masters
in teaching degree in the early 1990s by the University of
Northern Iowa.
She was a long time member
of the Clear Lake Lioness Club and she and George both were
deeply involved with the International Lions Club which took
them to many, many places on the globe. She always brought
something cultural back to “teach” all who would listen
about her great travels and adventures. They received the
International President's Award in 1979-80.
For some 25 years she
served with her husband as a Commodore for the Clear Lake
Area Chamber of Commerce, welcoming new business and
congratulating others on business achievements. In 1984, the
Klaassens were selected by the Chamber to serve as Grand
Marshall's for the Fourth of July parade.
The Klaassens were also
past recipients of the Harmony of Living Award presented by
the River City Barber Shop Chorus annually to Iowans serving
others. They dedicated their lives to the betterment of
others and will always be remembered for their gracious
volunteering and “salesmanship” of tickets and baked goods.
She was a long time member
of the Clear Lake Congregational Church and had a great
faith in God.
She is survived by
numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death
by her parents; her husband, George; three sisters, Alice
Edminster of Tucson Arizona, Mabel Francis of Clear Lake and
Ruth Kramer of Garner; and two brothers, Lawrence Juel and
Ernest Juel of Maryland.
Edna was the last of her
siblings to pass away. Excluding one brother, they lived
into their late 80's and early 90's with two sisters making
it to 100 years of age.
