Keith
Neuroth, 62, died on Sunday, October 2, 2005, at home
surrounded by his family.
A funeral mass was held on
Wednesday, October 5, at the St. Joseph Catholic Church,
Wesley, with Father Randy Schon officiating. Lector was Ed
Otis. Organist, Ann Studer accompanied the St. Joseph
funeral choir. Casket bearers were Dennis Cink, Tom Cink,
Tony Cink, John Yougwirth, John Reed, Dan Garman and Dave
Garman.
Interment was in the St.
Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Wesley, with the
Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home in charge of the
arrangements.
Keith Duane, was born on
June 9, 1943 at Wesley, to Urban and Rosella Hildman
Neuroth. Keith received his education at the St. Joseph
Catholic School in Wesley. He was united in marriage with
Janice Elsbecker at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in
Wesley, where he was a member all his life. The couple lived
in Wesley, where they raised their family and where Keith
owned and operated the Neuroth Sawmill for the last 10
years.
Keith enjoyed woodworking,
hunting and fishing, but his greatest joy in life was
spending time with all of his grandchildren and
great-grandchildren and he was very proud of them all.
Keith is survived by his
loving wife, Janice of Wesley; his daughters, Sheila Troxel
of Forest City, Lori Patterson of Nebraska City, Nebraska
and Amy Schutjer and husband, Greg of Titonka; his
grandchildren, Victoria, Tabetha, Tenijha, Tanisha, Hunter,
McKaila, Gwendolyn and Alandra; two great-grandchildren,
Jerome and Pashia; sisters, Marlene Rowe and husband, Norman
of Harrison, Arkansas and Elaine Hoffman and husband,
Kenneth of Marshalltown; and brothers, Michael Neuroth and
wife, Connie of Seven Points, Texas and David Neuroth and
wife, Lou Ann of Wesley.

Leslie Maynard Pederson, 93, of Albert Lea, Minnesota, formerly
of Kiester, Minnesota, died on Wednesday, October 5, 2005, at the Albert Lea Medical
Center.
Funeral services were held
on Saturday, October 8, at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Vinje, with Rev. Chris Fiske officiating. Burial was

Joseph
C. Keough, 80, of Forest City, died on Monday, October 10, 2005, at the Mercy Medical
Center-North Iowa in Mason City.
Funeral services were held on Friday, October 14, at
the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City, with Rev. Lee Laaveg officiating. Burial
was in the Oakland Cemetery in Forest City, with the Petersen Lund Funeral Home in charge
of the arrangements.
Joseph Charles, was born in Britt, the son of Thomas and
Loretta Keough. He was raised by Carrie and Charles Hoeft of Garner and it was
there he received his education and graduated from the Garner High School. He
entered the U.S. Navy and served as a medic during W.W. II. Following his
honorable discharge he lived with his brother in Kansas City for a time while
working for the railroad. On September 19, 1948, he was united in marriage to
Aileen Enright at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City. The coupled farmed
near Garner for several years before moving to Forest City, where Joe worked for
the Forest City Produce Company. He later owned and operated the Wapsie Hatchery
in Forest City. After selling that, he began the Wapsie Poultry Service. Joe
never really retired but continued to enjoy his chickens and was still active in
another business, Keo Feathers, supplying high quality feathers for use in fly
fishing.
Joe loved to travel and he and Aileen would take these feathers all
over the country. He enjoyed camping and hunting and loved to fish. Joe
treasured time spent with his family and liked to share a quiet afternoon with
his chickens. He was a member of the American Legion and the Immanuel Lutheran
Church.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Aileen Keough of
Forest City; five children, Gregory Keough of Forest City, Ronald Keough and
wife, Jeanette of Forest City, Sandra Peterson and husband, Dennis of Lake Mills,
Rose Marie Wicker and husband, Brad of Forest City and Glenda Keough and husband,
Tim of Miller; 16 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren;
a brother, Thomas Keough of Amsterdam, Missouri; and a half-brother, Kenny
Chapman of California.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Bill, Jim
and Cliff Keough; half-brother, Carl Chapman; sisters, Mary Morrisey and Loretta
Long; a grandson, Nathan Wicker; and a granddaughter, Heidi.

Jane C. Ebaugh, 91

Jane
E. Ebaugh, 91, of Forest City, died on Monday, October 10, 2005, at the Good
Samaritan Center in Forest City.
Funeral services were held on Friday, October 14, at the
United Methodist Church in Forest City, with Pastor Charles Wallace officiating.
Burial was in the Oakland Cemetery in Forest City, with the Petersen Lund Funeral Home in
charge of the arrangements.
Jane Ellen, was born on April 29, 1914 in Brooklyn, the daughter
of Frank and Emma Lelia (Mansur) Talbott. She received her elementary education
in Brooklyn and graduated from the Brooklyn High School in 1931. Jane attended Iowa
State College in Ames, graduating in 1937. She began teaching in Fertile and it
was here that she met William Stanley "Stan" Ebaugh. The two were married in
Brooklyn at the home of Jane’s parents on June 20, 1940. The couple made their home
in Fertile and Jane quit teaching to raise a family. When WW II interrupted,
Stan went into the service and Jane began teaching in Fertile again. After the
war in 1946, the family moved to Forest City. After her three children were
older, Jane worked for Gulf Oil in Forest City and then worked in the Winnebago
County Treasurer’s office, retiring when she was 65.
She was a long-time
volunteer at the Good Samaritan Center and enjoyed caring for her elderly
neighbors and friends. She was an active member of the United Methodist Church
in Forest City, where she taught Sunday School and was involved with circle
activities. After her retirement, she traveled with her sister, Nina to Europe
and the two spent a month together every year in California in the winter and in
Clear Lake in the summer. Jane’s faith, family and friends were most important
to her and she treasured time spent with her grandchildren. She also loved
sports and was an avid fan of the Iowa State Cyclones.
Jane is survived by her children and their spouses, Mike and Marlys Ebaugh of Forest City and Mary and Doug Hatlevig of Iowa Falls; a
daughter-in-law, Janay Ebaugh of Forest City; a sister, Nina Talbott of Hermosa
Beach, California; seven grandchildren; four great-granddaughters; and several
nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Stanley
in 1973; her son, William "Bill" in 2005; a brother, Robert; a sister, Mary; and
two sisters who died in infancy.

Robert
G. Abbey, 79, of Scarville, died on Monday, October 10, 2005, at the Naeve Hospital in
Albert Lea, Minnesota.
A private family service was held. Burial was in the Ellington
Township Cemetery in rural Forest City, with the Peterson Lund Funeral Home in charge
of the arrangements.
Gene was born on August 30, 1926, to Bertus Claron and Minnie
Rose (Anderson) Abbey on the farm where he lived all his life. He was baptized
and confirmed at the Asbury Methodist Church in Lake Mills. He went to the Delano
Country School, Center Township, for eight years and graduated from the Lake Mills
Public School in 1943. Gene was married to Valeda Ohlmann of Thompson, on
December 18, 1955 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Thompson.
As a young man he liked
to hunt and trap and look for Indian arrowheads. He also picked potatoes for a
neighbor and snapped sweet corn by hand for the Cool Spring Canning Co. He learned
to fly a Piper Cub airplane and got his pilot’s license. Gene was a life-long
farmer and worked for the government for 40 years measuring corn bins and
government diverted farm acres. He served as a 4-H Leader for the Center Cougars
for a number of years. After he retired from farming he delivered Winnebago
motor homes.
Gene is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, Valeda Abbey; a daughter, Carol Abbey of Leominster, Minnesota;
granddaughters, Allison Klipping of Delaware, Ohio and Erica Klipping of
Lexington, Kentucky; grandsons, Scott and Drake Abbey of Lake Mills; and special
family Brad and Darla Evenson, Amelia and Hannah; sisters, Marjorie McKee of
Duluth, Minnesota and Wilma Lampman and husband, Duncan of Carterville, Illinois;
sister-in-law, Rosetta Stern and husband, Russel of Sun City, Arizona;
brothers-in-law, Gary Ohlmann and wife, Karen of Albert Lea, Minnesota and Roy Ohlmann and wife, Beverly of Shakopee, Minnesota.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and son, John Charles
in 1994.

Dr. Clifford L. Syverson, 85, of Lawrence, Kansas, formerly
of Lake Mills, died on Thursday, October 13, 2005, at his home in Lawrence.
Funeral services will be held
on Thursday, October 20, at the Asbury United Methodist Church
in Lake Mills, with Pastor Audrey Young officiating. Visitation will be held one
hour prior to the services at the church on Thursday. Burial and a Masonic Service
will be in the Sunnyside Cemetery in Lake Mills, with the Northern Light Masonic Lodge
No. 266 presiding. The Mittelstadt Funeral Home of Lake Mills is in charge of

Bernice
Pearl Holstad, 87, of Bricelyn, Minnesota, died on Sunday, October 16, 2005, at her
daughter’s home in Lake Mills.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, October 20, at
the Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Kiester, Minnesota, with Rev. Chris Fiske
officiating. Burial was in the Trinity Lutheran Church Cemetery, with the Mittelstadt
Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.
Pallbearers were Mark Peterson, Michael
Peterson, Matthew Peterson, Mary Jo Huntley, Van Neel, Eric Neel, Dawn Jenson
and Denise O’Neil. Honorary bearers were Donnie Amundson, Ronnie Amundson,
Gordon Sevley, Scott Sevley, Jeremy Sevley and Bruce Hovland.
Bernice Pearl, daughter of Peter and Evelyn (Sorbo) Sevley,
was born on January 17, 1918, at her parents’ farm in rural Kiester, Minnesota. She was
baptized at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Kiester and confirmed on July 26, 1931, by
Rev. J. A. Arneson, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, where she also taught Sunday
School in later years. Bernice attended school at Kiester. She worked at the Cool
Springs Canning Co. when she was 16 years old. During that time, she stayed with
her Grandpa, Henry Sevley whom she loved very much. She also worked at the
Bricelyn Canning Co. during sweet corn harvest. On July 22, 1939, Bernice was
united in marriage with Harry B. Holstad, by Rev. Arneson, at the Immanuel
Lutheran Church Parsonage. Following their marriage, the couple moved to their
farm in Eden Township, Winnebago County, where they remained for 66 years. In
1959, Bernice went to work at Deluxe Products (Fleetguard Industries) for 19
years. She then retired, but kept busy on the farm with Harry.
Bernice was a
loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a care giver
with a big, generous heart, even when her own heart didn’t work well. She loved
her home, her mowing and taking care of her yard and flowers. She was the Trinity
Lutheran Church’s Good Cheer Lady for 28 years, where she also kept active with WELCA, circle, Sunday
School teacher and Altar Guild. Bernice was also a member
of the Kiester Senior Citizens.
Bernice is survived by her four daughters, LeAnn (Roger)
Peterson of Lake Mills, Barbara Ziegler of Wells, Minnesota, Mary Lou (Harvey) Neel
of Scarville and Beverly (Gene) Jenson of Hayward, Minnesota; grandchildren, Mark (Sherene)
Peterson of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, Michael (Mary) Peterson of Ft. Walton Beach,
Florida, Mary Jo (Brian) Huntley of Victoria, Minnesota, Matthew (Kimberly) Peterson of
Johnston, Van (Kristin) Neel of Scottsdale, Arizona, Eric (Kris) Neel of Alden,
Minnesota, Dawn Jenson and special friend, Ryan Nolander of Albert Lea,
Minnesota and
Denise (Mike) O’Neil of Burnsville, Minnesota; nine great-grandchildren; a new great-grandchild; and a sister-in-law, Kathy Sevley of Kiester, Minnesota.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harry in
1996; three brothers, Harry Sevley and his wife, Elaine, Alvin Sevley and Earl

C. W. Oleson, 74, of Marshalltown, died
on Sunday, October 16,
5005, at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.
Funeral services were held
at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home, on Wednesday, October 19, with Rev. Darrell
Mitchell officiating. Burial was on Friday, October 21, at the Madison Township
Cemetery at Forest City, with Pastor Randy Tweeten officiating and military
honors. The Mitchell Family Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Born on May 29, 1931 in Forest City, he was the son of Sylvan
and Wilna (Smith) Oleson. He graduated from the Forest City High School in 1949.
He then attended Waldorf College in Forest City for two years before serving
four years in the United States Navy. He then finished one year of schooling in
Vermillion, South Dakota. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Business
Administration from the Mankato State University in Minnesota. On April 7th, 1958,
he was united in marriage to Agnes Abdo in Mankato, Minnesota. They moved to
Marshalltown in 1959. He was employed at Retail Credit Co. and then at
Marshalltown Manufacturing where he started standard costs. He was later
employed at Arbie Feeds as a credit manager where he retired in 1994.
After
retirement, he and many times Agnes delivered motor homes. In retirement he
enjoyed taking vacations, was also involved in the Marshalltown Football League
where he was a charter founding parent, and coached the YMCA/YWCA basketball
league. He was a member of the American Legion, Junior Achievement, Bobcat
Quarter-back Club, a fan of the Bobcats and many sports. He and his wife,
Agnes, enjoyed traveling.
Left to celebrate his life is his wife, Agnes Oleson; his four
children, Marcia (Charles Tweeten) Oleson of Forest City, Mrs. Laurie (Irwin)
John of Waukee, Todd (Robin) Oleson of Exeter, Pennsylvania and Michael Oleson of Ft.
Lauderdale, Florida; a grandson, Drew Oleson of Exeter, Pennsylvania; and his only
surviving sister, Beverly Steiff of Port Charlotte, Florida.
In death he has rejoined his parents; and brothers, Clinton
“Bud” and Darrell “Joe".

Robert E. McCormack, 85

Robert E. McCormack, 85, of Jefferson, died on
Monday, October 17, 2005,
at Burlington, North Carolina.
Funeral services were held
on Saturday, October 22, at the
Chapel of the Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home in Humboldt, with Rev. Ed Kail
officiating. Interment, with full military rites by the VFW Post No. 5240 of Dakota
City, was in the Indian Mound Cemetery in Humboldt. Organist was Marian Sayers
and
honorary casket bearer was Kenny Hoover. Casket bearers were Bill Williams, Bill
Lanning, Doug Coltvet, Mike Mayall, Jim Kellner and Jim Vought.
Robert Earl, the son of Robert Earl and Hennrietta (Dennhardt)
McCormack, was born on September 27, 1920 in Jefferson. Robert was raised in the
Jefferson area and attended Greene County Schools. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy
and served as a gunnersmate aboard the USS Louisville during World War II.
Attached to the Seventh Fleet, Robert’s ship participated in the campaigns of
Leyte Gulf, Okinawa, Coral Sea, Guam, the Aleutians, New Guinea and the
liberation of the Philippians. Following his discharge in November 1945, he
returned to Greene County.
He was united in marriage with Marcella Jane Noel on
March 19, 1945. The couple made their home in various communities where Robert
worked in the construction business. In September 1958, the family moved to
Rutland where he was employed with P&M Stone, Frit Industries and the Ford
Garage in Humboldt until his retirement. In November 2004, Robert relocated to
Graham, North Carolina to live with his daughter.
Robert is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Janet and
Chris Albertsen of Graham, North Carolina; grandchildren, Christian and Satchi Albertsen
and Leah Albertsen; great-grandchild, Christian Albertsen; sister and
brother-in-law, Barbara and Raymond Borkowski of Forest City; brother and
sister-in-law, Richard and Shirley McCormack of Montague, California.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife,
Marcella.

Creighton Fox, 88, of Forest City, died
on Tuesday, October 18,
2005, at the Concord Care Center in Garner.
Funeral services were held on Friday, October 21,
at the St. James Catholic Church in Forest City, with Rev. Jerry Blake officiating.
Burial was in the St. James Catholic Cemetery in Forest City, with the Petersen Lund
Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.
Creighton “Chic” Fox, was born on October 20, 1916 in Forest
City, to Clyde and Jennie (Smith) Fox. He was baptized in the Congregational
Church and graduated from the Forest City High School. His grandfather, father and
uncles built roads in the area with 150 mules and horses. He and his older
brothers spent time in the summer visiting the road gang. It was there he was
nicknamed “Chic” because he had a pet chicken. The name stayed with him all his
life. He farmed with his father and sold Phisters Seed Corn. On August 12, 1941,
he married Mary Byers of Garner at the St. Boniface Catholic Church. He joined the
Catholic Church at that time.
The couple farmed five years before moving to
Forest City in 1946. He worked at Ralph Bowen Food Store and drove a tank wagon
gas truck for Harry Corby’s Mobil Gas Station. In 1951, they purchased the Ruby Evanson Mobile Gas Station south of Forest City. They renamed it Fox Trading
Post. During this time they raised horses and ponies, owning a registered
quarter horse from the Tom Elken’s Ranch of Grants, New Mexico in the 1940s.
Chic rode in parades and trail rides and entered many horse shows. He served as
President of the Rainbow Trail Riders in 1952 when the club was incorporated. He
was also active in the Garner Saddle Club. He promoted rodeos, horse sales and
professional wrestling matches out of Minneapolis at the Civic Auditorium. He
worked at Kayot Forester and operated a USDA licensed kennel for 25 years. He
enjoyed spending time with his family and having coffee with friends.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Fox of Forest City; daughter,
Cindy Mary and husband, Robert of Forest City; son, Mike Fox of Denver, Colorado;
granddaughters, Monica (Scott) Young of Garner, Brenda (Tony) Huebsch of
Mitchell and Carla Mary of Bennington, New Hampshire; great-granddaughters, Amy and Katie Young
and Micheala and Courtney Huebsch; brothers, B. C. Fox of Wazata, Minnesota and Earl
“Toad” Fox and wife, Vivian of Forest City; sisters, Margie (Alton) Brandl of
Mason City, Jennie Mae Nelson of Clear Lake and Helen Jean (Al) Dutemple of
Urbandale; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Kay
Fox.

Kristeen
B. Drugg, 70, of Forest City, died on Wednesday, October 19, 2005, at the Muse Norris
Hospice in Mason City.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, October 22, at the Immanuel
Lutheran Church in Forest City, with Rev. Lee Laaveg officiating. Burial was in
the
Oakland Cemetery in Forest City, with the Petersen Lund Funeral Home in charge of
the arrangements.
Kristeen Beverlee, the daughter of Roy and Emylia (Thompson)
Rygmyr, was born in Forest City on February 11, 1935. She was baptized and
confirmed at the Immanuel Lutheran Church and received her education in the Forest
City School System. She was united in marriage with Roger Drugg on June 5, 1952,
at the Immanuel Lutheran Church. The couple made their home in Virginia for two
years while Roger was in the service. They have made Forest City their home
since then. Kris was a life-long member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church, where she
was on the Board of Trustees and served as Sunday School Superintendent. Kris
worked at the Summit Printing Company for 10 years, at G&H Motor Parts for 15
years and beginning in 1977, was employed at Waldorf College until her
retirement. She also served on the President’s Advisory Committee for Waldorf.
She was acting secretary for the Forest City Food Bank for many years.
Kris
enjoyed doing needlework and crocheting. She liked to go camping with her family
when the kids were young, was an avid bridge player and loved to have a meal out
with her daughters and friends at local tea houses. She was an accomplished
musician, playing the organ and piano.
Kris is survived by her husband of 53 years, Roger Drugg of
Forest City; her children and families, Robert and Terri Drugg of Lake Mills
and their sons, Ron (Eroica) Drugg of El Cajon, California and children, Nethaniel,
Mikalee Kristeen and Anelina Luella; Jason (Sarah) Drugg of Forest City, Terry
and Jane Drugg of Spring Hill, Kansas and their daughter, Jessica; Karen and Jim
Schmidt of West Des Moines and their children, Dustin and Holli; Linda and Bruce
Nelson of Forest City and daughters, Laura and Sarah; and an aunt, Grace Luella
Thompson of Albert Lea, Minnesota.
Kris was preceded in death by her parents.

Margaret E. Katuin, 89, of Garner, died
on Friday, October 21,
2005, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.
Funeral services were
held on Monday, at the St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner, with Fr. Jerry Blake
officiating. Lector was Donna Young. Music was provided by organist, Carolyn Kumsher who accompanied the church choir.
Ushers were Robert Kral and Lawrence
Engstler. Honorary bearers were Jackie Lunning, Lori Smith and Dawn Mitchell.
Casket bearers were Rick Henschen, Steve Lunning, Max Smith, Doug Mitchell, Gary
Smith and Jim Hrubes. Burial was in the St. John’s Catholic Cemetery, Duncan.
The
Cataldo Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Margaret Emma, the daughter of Albert Jr. and Anna (Wellik)
Hrubes, was born on July 31, 1916 on a farm near Duncan. She attended the rural
schools of Erin Township in Hancock County. On November 24, 1936, she was married
to Albert Katuin at the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan. They farmed
northeast of Klemme until 1969, when they retired from farming and moved into
Garner. In November of 2002, she became a resident of the Good Samaritan Center
in Forest City.
She enjoyed her family, sewing, baking, gardening and working
outside. She was a member of the St. Boniface Catholic Church, Rosary Society,
Catholic Daughters of the Americas and the Catholic Workman Branch No. 51.
Margaret is survived by her daughter, Margie (Carl) Henschen
of Forest City; granddaughter, Jackie (Steve) Lunning of Forest City and their
three sons, Chad, Adam and Matt; grandchildren, Rick Henschen and his two
children, Megan and Seth; Lori (Max) Smith and their two sons, Chase and Gary
(Kristi); Dawn (Doug) Mitchell and their three children, Brittany, Sierra and
Colton; great-great-grandchildren, Taylor and Evan; sisters-in-law, Rosella
Hrubes of LaPorte City and Anna Paulson of Clarion; a brother-in-law, John
(Ruth) Katuin of Fresno, California; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert in 1981; her
parents; and two brothers, Elmer and Leonard (Arlene) Hrubes.

Gene was born in Mitchellville, Iowa and graduated from the Burt High School in
1936. He lived in Zephyrhills, Florida from 1950 to 1968, Cedar Falls from 1968
to 1983, and St. Petersburg, Florida from 1983 to 2005. He was a proud Army-Air
Corps veteran from WW II, where he was an aircraft electrician on B-17s. His last
assignment was with the P-40 Flying Tigers in China. He started his career as a
carpenter and retired from Sears in 1981.
After retiring, he was an active
member of the Wally Byam Caravan Club (Airstream travel club) in St. Petersburg
and he also loved working in his garage restoring antique furniture.
He is survived by three sons, Gary Martinson of Garwin, Dean Martinson
of Oviedo,
Florida and Kim Martinson of Jacksonville, Florida; and one daughter, Linda Price of
St. Petersburg; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Joseph "Junior" Hellie, 68, of Lake Mills, formerly of
Scarville, died on Saturday, October 29, 2005, at the Lake Mills Care Center in
Lake Mills.
Funeral services were held
on Tuesday, November 1, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church
in Scarville, with Rev. Randy Baldwin officiating. Burial was in the church
cemetery, with the Mittelstadt Funeral Home of Lake Mills in charge of the arrangements.

Edward F. Malek, 91, of Garner, died
on Sunday, October 30,
2005, after a short illness, surrounded by his family at his son’s home in
Gretna, Nebraska.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, at the St. Boniface Catholic
Church in Garner, with Fr. Michael Schueller officiating. Lector was Donna Young.
Music was provided by organist, Mary Kopacek who accompanied the church choir.
Ushers were Robert Kral and Lawrence Engstler. Honorary bearers were Bill Malek,
Marv Lackore and Ernie Malek. Casket bearers were Dr. Joseph McGuire, Tim
McGuire, Bruce Kennedy, Michael Kennedy, Matthew Kennedy and Bob Malek. Burial
was in the St. John’s Catholic Cemetery, Duncan, with the Cataldo Funeral Home in charge
of the arrangements. Edward Frank, was born
on April 30, 1914, to
Adolph and Caroline (Hoydar) Malek on the home farm northwest of Garner. He
graduated from the Hayfield High School as Valedictorian of his class of 1932. He
then attended the Britt Junior College and graduated in 1934. He began teaching at
Garfield No. 5, where he taught for five years. He was united in marriage with
Eileen McCormick at the St. Boniface Catholic Church on August 23, 1938. The service
was performed by Fr. Matthias Manternach. Ed farmed until 1980, when the couple
moved into Garner. Eileen is currently residing with her son, Tom in Gretna,
Nebraska.
Ed was an accomplished musician and sang with the St. Wenceslaus
Choir for
42 years. Music was in his heart. Ed and his brother, Syl, formed Malek’s
Accordion Band in the 1930s. They played many wedding and anniversary dances
until the 1960s. Then Ed and Marv Lackore started the L & M Band with Nancy (Lackore)
Kaduce, Joe Buzicky and Tom Malek. They played until the 1980s. Ed was a member
of the Lions Club for several years and a highlight of his life was a trip for
the entire family to the International Lions Convention in New York City in
1965. He played organ in the Iowa Room at the Hotel Continental. He enjoyed
making tapes and sharing these with friends and relatives around the world.
Ed
was a former member of the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan and a present
member of the St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner. He also belonged to the
Catholic Workman Lodge for 76 years. Ed was elected Hancock County Democratic
Supervisor in 1960 and served in that position for 14 years.
Ed is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Eileen; three children, Carolyn
(Dr. Joseph) McGuire of State Center, Tom (Marilyn) Malek of Gretna, Nebraska and
Catherine (Bruce) Kennedy of Harbor, Illinois; nine grandchildren, Tim McGuire,
Molly McGuire and Moira Pyle, Tiffani Malek and Alissa Neu, Shannon (Jody) Siver,
Megan Kennedy, Matthew Kennedy and Michael Kennedy; seven great-grandchildren,
Maggie McGuire, Macey McGuire and Devon Pyle, Taylor Wagner and Noah May,
Natalie Siver and Jacklyn Siver; a sister-in-law, Helen Malek of Garner; and a
brother-in-law, Robert (Bev) McCormick of Garner.
He was
preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Syl Malek.
