Colonel M. Piersol, 88 of Lake Mills, Iowa, died on Wednesday, July 2, 2003, at the Lake Mills Care Center in Lake Mills, Iowa.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 5, 2003 at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Thompson, with Rev. Mark Decker officiating. Burial will take place in the Ft. Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, Minnesota, with the Winter Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Colonel is survived by his wife of 59 years, Jennie; their son, Bruce (Ann) of Red Lake Falls, Minnesota; daughter, Linda of Minnetonka, Minnesota; grandson, Brett (Mindy) Piersol of Red Lake Falls, Minnesota; granddaughter, Heather (Patrick) Thibert of East Grand Forks, Minnesota; great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Courtney Piersol of Red Lake Falls, Minnesota; sisters-in-law, Esther (Patrick) Grames of St. Paul, Minnesota, Helen Hovda of Mesa, Arizona and Doris Hovda of Forest City; brother-in-law, Andrew Larsen of Sun City, Arizona; along with many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

July 9, 2003

Funeral service for Gladys Heitland, 88, of Buffalo Center, was held on Monday, at the First Congregational Church in Buffalo Center, with Pastor Dave Langer officiating. Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery, Buffalo Center, with the Winter Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Left to cherish her memory are her five children, Leona and her husband, Carroll Van Hove of Buffalo Center, Gerald "Jerry" and his wife, Laura Heitland of Clear Lake, Donna and her husband, Dale Bredeson of Estherville, Judy Hanson of Trenton, Missouri and Dale and his wife, Carol Heitland of Forest City; 12 grandchildren, Bonnie Wilson, Pam Pitkin, Lisa Arians, Jason Heitland, Daniel Bredeson, Douglas Bredeson, Pat Hanson, Sheri Stufflebean, Dulcie Price, Tim Hanson, Kendra Amundson and Kayla Meredith; twenty great-grandchildren; one sister, Clara and her husband, Herb Klasse; one brother, Walter and his wife, Great Aukes; and one sister-in-law, Margaret Heitland.

Evelyn Kingland, age 95 of Forest City, died on Thursday, July 3, 2003, at the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City.

Funeral services were held on Monday, July 7, at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home in Forest City, with Tim Vaughan and Bruce Van Stelton officiating. Burial will be in the Elim Cemetery in rural Fertile, Iowa.

She is survived by her three children, Wayne Kingland of Forest City, Norma (Paul) Vlieger of Norwalk and Don Kingland of Manly; three sisters, Bernice Tweed of Decorah, Gladys Almelien of Joice and Mildred Slattum of Albert Lea; nine grandchildren; and thirteen great-grandchildren.

Lois Imogene Endris, 75, of Wells, Minnesota, formerly of Scarville, died on Saturday, July 5, 2003, at the Friendship Home in Wells.

Donna K. Bredeson, 63, of Estherville, died on Tuesday, July 8, 2003, at the Avera Holy Family Hospital in Estherville.

Funeral services were held on Friday, July 11, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Estherville. The Reverends Paul Wiegman and Steve Wilson officiated. Burial was in the Estherville Lutheran Cemetery, Estherville.

Ruth McMullin, 96

July 16, 2003

Ruth Marie Elizabeth McMullin, 96, of Grinnell, formerly of Hanlontown, died on Tuesday, July 8, 2003, at the St. Francis Manor in Grinnell.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 12, at the Grace Lutheran Church in Hanlontown. The Rev. Kris Snyder officiated. Burial was in the Brush Point Cemetery, rural Hanlontown.

Left to cherish her memory are her two sons, Richard McMullin and his wife, Priscilla of Overland Park, Kansas and Roger McMullin and his wife, Mary of Grinnell; four grandchildren, Christopher McMullin and his wife, Verna of Olathe, Kansas, Shelley McMullin of Overland Park, Kansas, Sarah McMullin Swinford and her husband, James of Dallas, Texas and Rachel McMullin and her husband, Glen Ammons of Madison, Wisconsin; two great-grandchildren, Lanie and Richard Christopher (R.C.) McMullin of Olathe, Kansas; as well as other relatives and friends.

Elmer George Lundberg, 89

July 23, 2003

Elmer George Lundberg, 89, son of Albert and Lillie (Lorentzen) Lundberg, died on Sunday, July 13, 2003, at his home in Omaha, Nebraska.

He was born on a farm near Forest City. Lundberg graduated from the Forest City High School with the class of 1933 and graduated from Iowa State College in Ames with a Degree in Horticulture. He married Frances Loper. Lundberg owned and operated Lundbergs Greenhouse in Osage for many years. The couple retired to Arkansas, then moved to Omaha due to his health.

He will be buried in Madison Cemetery south of Forest City.

Survivors are his wife, Frances; one son, James A. Lundberg and wife, Cathy of Omaha; one daughter, Jeanene and husband, Steve Reddick of Glen Ellyn, Illinois; two sisters, Leora and husband, Henry Smith of Denver, Colorado and Myrth Smith of Clear Lake; three grandsons; two granddaughters; nieces and nephews; a sister-in-law, Darlene Lundberg of Forest City; along with cousins and many friends.

Michel Dalton, 38

July 23, 2003

Michael Dalton, 38, of Forest City, died on Monday, July 14, 2003, at the Muse Norris Hospice in Mason City.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, July 17, at the United Methodist Church in Forest City. The Rev. Gary Marzolf officiated. Burial was in the Oakland Cemetery in Forest City, with the Petersen Lund Funeral Home in Forest City in charge of the arrangements.

Michael is survived by his wife, Danette; his daughters, Kaci, Kali and Sarah; his parents, Larry and Shirley Dalton; and a host of friends and relatives.

Dorothy Ann Rapp, 83, died on Thursday, July 17, 2003, at the Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake.

Funeral services were held on Monday, July 21, at the Saratoga Presbyterian Church in Saratoga. The Rev. Tim Sir officiated. Burial was in the Saratoga Cemetery.

Survivors include her three children, Tim (Lynn Sonneman) of Seattle, Ted (Sarah) of Ankeny and Polly (Frank) Miller of Forest City; a brother, John Robinson of Lime Springs; a sister, Betty (Harold) Munkel of Lime Springs; her step-children, Paul Rapp of Richmond, Missouri and Janine (Cliff) Bedwell of North Hollywood; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; and nine step-great-grandchildren.

Mary Jane (Sankot) Holland, 89, of Leland, died on Thursday, July 17, 2003, at her home, while in the loving care of her family.

A memorial service was held at the Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Leland, with the Rev. Jacqueline Swanson officiating.

Survivors include her husband, Herbert; two sisters, Jean Hinkle and Sandi Thistlewaite; seven children, David (Beverly) Holland of Plainwell, Michigan, Jan (Lois) Holland of Centre Hall, Pennsylvania, Marianne (Greg) Michel of Des Moines, Rebecca Doren of Pinon Hills, California, Martha (Robert) Olson of Jewell, Diane (Steve) Rickerl of Aurora, South Dakota and Daniel (Marcia) Holland of Gulf Breeze, Florida; 17 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Robert John Thorson, 73, of Leland, died on Friday, July 18, 2003, at the Albert Lea Medical Center in Albert Lea, Minnesota.

Cora Kvale of Forest City, died on Friday, July 18, 2003.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Friday, July 25, at the First Lutheran Church in Albert Lea, Minnesota. Visitation is from 5-8:00 p.m., on Thursday, at the Bonnerup Funeral Service in Albert Lea and a hour before the services at the church.

She is survived by brother, Orvin Stadheim of Ellendale, Minnesota; sister, Helen (LB) Boyd of Alexandria, Virginia; three sons and their families, Ronald and Donna Kvale of Forest City and their children, Shellie and Kevin McDermott, Anthony, Katelyn and Erin of Britt, Bryon Kvale of Forest City, Heidi and Capt. Daniel VanEvery of Fort Lee, Virginia and Melissa and Matthew Kerr of Carrboro, North Carolina; Dale and Sonja Kvale of Bella Vista, Arkansas and their children, Janna and Kevin Ballard, Zachary, Emma, Jennessa and Noah of Pelican Rapids, Minnesota, Dick and Heather Kvale, Benjamin and Samuel of Litchfield, Minnesota; and Thomas and Barbara Kvale of Toledo, Ohio and their children, John Kvale of Aspen, Colorado and David and Peter of Toledo, Ohio.

Stanley L. Zirbel, 85

July 30, 2003

Stanley L. Zirbel, 85, of Clear Lake, died on Sunday, July 20, 2003, at the Good Shepherd Care Center in Mason City.

Memorial services were held on Wednesday, July 23, at the Christian Church in Clear Lake. The Rev. Mark Young officiated. A private graveside service was held in the Clear Lake Cemetery, with military honors by the Clear Lake VFW. The Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel in Clear Lake was in charge of the arrangements.

He is survived by his wife of Clear Lake; five daughters and their husbands, Jan and Fred Hare of Fertile, Jim and Karen Weld of Clarion, Amy and Keith Van Note of Minneapolis, Jill and John David Murray of Burnsville, Minnesota and Eileen Zirbel of Rochester, Minnesota; a sister, Merridy Hill of Mason City; four grandsons; four granddaughters; five great-granddaughters; a great-great-granddaughter; and a wonderful extended family.

Robert Lewis Starkey, 75

Robert Lewis Starkey, 75, of Clear Lake, died on Monday, July 21, 2003, following a valiant and courageous battle with cancer in which he showed love, dignity, faith and a sense of humor throughout.

Funeral services to celebrate the life of Robert were held on Saturday, July 26, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake. The Reverends Dean Hess and Edward Starkey officiated. Military honors were provided by the Clear Lake VFW. Burial was in the Clear Lake Cemetery, with the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel in Clear Lake in charge of the arrangements.

He is survived by his loving wife, Bonnie; son, Dr. Randall Starkey and his wife, Mary Jo of San Francisco, California; daughter, Dawne Starkey Sipe and her husband, Dr. James Sipe of Golden Valley, Minnesota; grandchildren, Joe and Jenna Starkey and Rachel and Christopher Sipe; brother, Richard Starkey and his wife, Judy of Ft. Francis, Alberta, Canada; mother-in-law, Irene Cook of Clear Lake; and several aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Carlyle John Gerzema, 69, of Buffalo Center, died on Tuesday, July 22, 2003, at his home.

He is survived by his wife, Molly; sons, Michael and Merry Gerzema of Urbandale and David and Abbie Gerzema of La Crosse, Wisconsin; three grandchildren, Tim, Camille and Audrey; and brothers, Larry of Valparaiso, Indiana and Kent of Shoreview, Minnesota.

Elna L. Harms, 83

July 30, 2003

Elna L. Harms, 83, of Forest City, died on Friday, July 25, 2003, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Saturday, August 2, at the Forest City United Methodist Church. The Rev. Gary Marzolf will officiate. Inurnment will be in the Madison Township Cemetery in Forest City, with the Petersen Lund Funeral Home in Forest City in charge of the arrangements. There will be no visitation.

She was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by her daughter and husband, Judy and Royal Cerney and her son and his wife, Michael and Mary Harms. She was very proud of all her grandchildren who are left with many happy memories of time spent with her and Harvey. Left to cherish these memories are Christine (Cerney) and her husband, Mike Kortsheck, Jason Cerney, Matt and his wife, Kristin Harms, Mason and his wife, Kelli Harms, Melissa (Harms) and Tim Eastvold and Melanie Harms and her special friend, Dr. John Parks. Her latest pride and joys were her great-granddaughters, Julia Claire Eastvold, Laura Rae Harms and Alexzandra Mehmen.

She is also survived by one brother, Merle Bilyeu; and eight sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law; and many cousins and friends.

The family is inviting relatives and friends who wish to share special memories of Elna to send them before Thursday to P.O. Box 61, Forest City. These memories will be placed in a Memory Book to be shared at the Celebration of Life on Saturday, August 2. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials to be directed to the Muse Norris Hospice In-Patient Unit.
