February 5, 2003

Brandon Lynn Hugo, 20, of Scarville, died on Saturday, February 1, 2003, as a result of a motor vehicle accident near Scarville.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, February 4, at the Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills. The Rev. Randy Baldwin officiated. Burial was in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Scarville.

Survivors include his parents; one sister, Alyssa and her friend, Rob Nelson of Lake Mills; his love, Lanae Lenz of Conger; grandparents, Marty (Buckner) Reindal of Scarville and Melvin "Pete" and Nancy Hugo of Algona; aunts and uncles, Jeff and Lorie Hugo of Joice, Steve Hugo of Woden, John and Tammy (Hugo) Barker of Titonka, Mark and Jill Lichter of Algona, Dana and Julie Aschenbrenner of Chicago, Illinois, Donald and Sue (Reindal) Ostrander of Lake Mills and Jeff and Jayne (Reindal) Miller of Derby; along with many cousins.

Michael S. Langerud, 28

February 5, 2003

Michael S. Langerud, 28, of Scarville, died on Saturday, February 1, 2003, as the result of a motor vehicle accident. 

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., on Thursday, February 6, at the Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills. The Rev. Kevin Mackey will officiate. Burial will be in the Salem Memorial Cemetery in Lake Mills. Visitation is from 4-7:00 p.m., today Wednesday, February 5, at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home in Lake Mills and again one hour before the services at the church.

Accident claims two Scarville men

February 5, 2003

A single-vehicle accident claimed two lives on Saturday, February 1, one and a half miles west of Scarville on Winnebago County Road A-16.

Michael Langerud, 28, and Brandon Hugo, 20, both of Scarville were killed when the 1996 Dodge pick-up driven by Langerud lost control and went into the south ditch. It proceeded east bound in the ditch, hitting a farm drive and becoming airborne before coming to rest on its top.

Robert Nelson, 17, of Lake Mills was transported to Mercy Hospital in Mason City.

The accident remains under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol. Assisting on the scene were the Winnebago County Sheriff's Department, Lake Mills Police, Fire and Ambulance and the Scarville Fire Department.

Walter Jerome Johnson, 79

February 5, 2003

Walter Jerome Johnson, 79, of Lake Mills, died on Saturday, February 1, 2003, at his home.

Funeral services were held on Monday, February 3, at the Winnebago Lutheran Church in rural Lake Mills. The Rev. Bill Peters officiated, with the Mittelstadt Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements. Burial was in the Winnebago Lutheran Cemetery, rural Lake Mills.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Marilyn Johnson of Lake Mills; three children, John Johnson and his wife, Nancy of Lake Mills, James Johnson and his wife, Elaine Webster of Washington, D.C. and Susan and her husband, Jeff Swanson of Hayfield, Minnesota; 10 grandchildren, Michael, Eric and Megan Johnson, Kelsey, Katie and Jesse Zubke and Tina, Sheri, Lynn and Nick Swanson; two sisters, Anita and her husband, Gib Grunhuvd of Lake Mills and Shirley and her husband, Thomas Tveit of Kiester, Minnesota; one brother, Andrew Johnson and his wife, Ruth of Lake Mills; along with a number of nieces and nephews.

Dennis P. Lovick, 49, of Forest City, died on Saturday, February 1, 2003, at the Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames.

Memorial services were held on Saturday, February 8, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City. The Rev. Lee Laaveg officiated.

Left to mourn are his sister, Barb Lovick of Forest City; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, co-workers and special friend, Donna Schweighauser of Rolla, Missouri.

February 19, 2003

Rev. Milo E. Lee, 92, of Decorah, died on Sunday, February 2, 2003, at the Patty Elwood Center in Cresco. 

Funeral services were held on Saturday, February 8, at the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church. The Reverends Kim W. Smith and Ginny Olson officiated.

Survivors include his wife, Agnes of Decorah; five children, Marvin and wife, Ruth of Hinton Alberta and their children, Krista, Erik and Grete, Lorna of Clear Lake and her children, Laura and Jay, Dixie Hanson and husband, Paul of Moorpark, California and their children, Micah and Karin, Arland and wife, Kristine of Trimont, Minnesota and their children, Caleb, Gabriel and Jesse, David and wife, Joy of Rochester, Minnesota and their children, Cory and Daniel; four sisters, Ruth Johanson, Hazel Wangsness, Eloise Bakke and husband, Andrew and Elaine Syverson and husband, Ardell, all of Decorah; 13 nieces and five nephews on the Lee side; two sisters-in-law, Herborg (Roen) Vinge and husband, Alvin of Outlook, Saskatchewan and Dale and husband, Ingvald of Lacey, Washington; and nine nieces and two nephews on the Roen side.

Jerry Lee Alvey, 70, of Lake Mills, died on Tuesday, February 4, 2003, at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City. 

Memorial services were held on Friday, February 7, at the Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills. The Rev. Kevin Mackey officiated. Burial will take place at a later date in Wisconsin.

He is survived by his wife, Norma; sons, Michael and wife, Tracy of Barneveld, Wisconsin and Mark and wife, Lissa of Madison, Wisconsin; one grandson, Donovan; three step-grandchildren, Cody, Brittany and Garret; one sister, Karen and husband, Fred Suroff of Sedalia, Missouri and their sons, Aaron and Adam; three step-children, Jim, Tom and Linda and their families; along with numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Ruby M. Jante, 80, of Garner, died on Wednesday, February 5, 2003, at her home.

She is survived by her three children, Faye Abrahamson and her husband, James of Forest City, Linda Juhl and her husband, Jack Lehnert of Los Gatos, California and Glen Juhl and his wife, Barb of Garner; and 11 grandchildren, Ryan Abrahamson and his wife, Chureen and their son, Conor, Kirk Abrahamson, Justin Lehnert, Sara Lehnert, Kelly Juhl and his wife, Amanda, Kory Juhl, Kristy Juhl, Brady Juhl, Brian Formanek, Shawn Larkin and Jay Larkin.

Ruth E. Irvin, 92, of Forest City, died on Friday, February 7, 2003, at the Muse Norris Hospice in Mason City.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, February 11, at the First Baptist Church in Forest City. The Rev. Larry Kidwell officiated. Burial was in the Madison Township Cemetery in Forest City, with the Petersen Lund Funeral Home in Forest City in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include her children, Nick McCloud of Columbus, Missouri, Kassandra Williams of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Lucy Summers of Burbaun, Missouri, Robert S. Irvin of Louisville, Kentucky and William C.L. Irvin of Williams and their children and grandchildren; two brothers, Robert S. Kiefer of Clear Lake and Clifford E. Kiefer of Lime Springs; two sisters, Wanda Johnson and Frances Adams, both of Forest City; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Doris E. Solberg, 97

February 12, 2003

Doris E. Solberg, 97, of Clear Lake, died on Saturday, February 8, 2003, at the Concord Care Center in Garner, 18 days before her 98th birthday.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., on Friday, February 14, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake. The Reverends Dean Hess and Verlye Henriksen will officiate. Burial will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery. Visitation is one hour before the services on Friday at the church. The Ward Van-Slyke Colonial Chapel in Clear Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Several nieces and nephews survive Doris.

Lucille M. Pitkin, 90, of Forest City, died on Wednesday, February 12, 2003, at the Muse Norris Hospice in Mason City.

Survivors include her children, Milo J. Pitkin and his wife, Deloris of Belvidere, Illinois and Sheryl Johnson and her husband, Ralph of Forest City; son-in-law, Dean Krieger of Forest City; nine grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Milford Solomonson, 92, of Lake Mills, died on Wednesday, February 12, 2003, at the Amery Regional Medical Center in Amery, Wisconsin.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, February 18, at the North Prairie Lutheran Church in rural Lake Mills. The Rev. Randy Baldwin officiated. Burial was in the Sunnyside Cemetery in Lake Mills.

Surviving include his two daughters and their husbands, Marilyn (Norman) Osero of Amery, Wisconsin and Lois (Eugene) Osero of Wausau, Wisconsin; five grandsons, David, Steven (Erin) and James of Amery, Andrew (Theresa) of Glendale, Arizona and Ronald of Green Bay, Wisconsin; two great-granddaughters, Danielle and Ashley Osero of Glendale; two sisters, Cathryn Gullixson of Bloomington, Minnesota and Evelyn Matson of Amery; a sister-in-law, Opal Solomonson of Lake Mills; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Edward "Bud" Haaland, 76, of Long Prairie, Minnesota, formerly of Forest City, died on Thursday, February 13, 2003, at the Yuma Regional Medical Center in Yuma, Arizona.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, February 22, at the First Baptist Church in Long Prairie. The Reverends Nick Bell, J. David Livingston, John Swanson, Paul Twist, Arnold Rocholl and Irvin Larson will officiate. Casket bearers will be Harrison, Stephen, Mark and Bjorn Hanson, Robert and Anne Schultz, Stephanie Haaland and Rebecca Johnson. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery in Long Prairie. Visitation is from 4-8:00 p.m., on Friday, at the Stephan-Stein Funeral Home in Long Prairie.

Survivors include his wife, Lois of Long Prairie; three children, Charles (Debbie) Haaland of Southaven, Mississippi, Sally (Harley) Hanson of Long Prairie and Susie (Robert) Schultz of Excelsior, Minnesota; three sisters, Ione Knack of Eagle Grove, Florence Vorland of Yuma, Arizona and Ruth Salven of Greencastle, Indiana; and seven grandchildren.

Erthl Odella Bakken, 72, of Northwood, died on Saturday, February 15, 2003, at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., on Friday, February 21, at the First Lutheran Church in Northwood. The Rev. Paul Holmer officiated. Burial will be in the Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood. Visitation is from 5-7:00 p.m., on Thursday, at the Conner Colonial Chapel in Northwood and one hour prior to the service time on Friday at the church.

Survivors include a sister, Iola Bakken of Northwood; a nephew, Jan T. Gerber and wife, Candace of Omaha, Nebraska; and several cousins, a special companion dog, Twinkles and many friends.

Former Forest City architect, Norman E. Madson, 81, of Bloomington, Minnesota, died on Tuesday, February 18, 2003, in Arizona.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Monday, April 28, at the Christ the King Lutheran Church in Bloomington. Memorials may be made to Waldorf College, St. Olaf College, Christ the King Lutheran Church or Global Health Ministries. 

Survivors include his wife of 17 years, Phyllis; his daughters and their families, Judy and Mark Becker, Amy, Katy and Dan; Doris and Doug Yock, Lindsey and Adam; Camilla Madson and Steve Obaid, Nathan and Karin; his sons and their children, Eric and Meg Madson, Emily and John; Stephen Madson and Debra Yahle, Seth and an expected daughter. Also surviving are Phyllis's daughters and their families, Beth Molberg and Tom Brothen and Per; Andrea Molberg, Lexa and Tessa Basford.

Funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m., on Friday, February 28, at the Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills. The Rev. Roger Dykstra will officiate. Burial will be in the Salem Lutheran Cemetery in Lake Mills. Visitation is from 5-7:00 p.m., on Thursday, at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home in Lake Mills and again one hour prior to the services on Friday at the church.

Survivors include one daughter, Betty Aasgaard of Burnsville, Minnesota; two granddaughters, Carolyn Ladd and her husband, Jonathan Weber of Hamden, Connecticut and Roselyn Weber and her husband, Philip Weber and two great-grandchildren, Britta and Noah Weber, all of Austin, Texas; his sister-in-law, Helen Aasgaard and his nephew, Rick Aasgaard and his wife, Karen of Lake Mills; niece, Wendy Aasgaard Johnson of Apple Valley, Minnesota; and another nephew, Mike Jensen and his wife, Gloria of Osseo, Wisconsin.

Mildred E. Burgess, 92, of Bloomer, Wisconsin, died on Friday, February 21, 2003, at the Hetzel Care Center in Bloomer.

Charles "Norman" Nye, 85, of Fertile, died on Monday, February 24, 2003, at the Muse Norris Hospice in Mason City.

Funeral services were held on Friday, February 28, at the Pilot Knob Lutheran Church in rural Forest City. The Rev. Bob Snitzer officiated. Burial was in the Brush Point Cemetery in rural Fertile, with the Petersen Lund Funeral Home in Forest City in charge of the arrangements.

Norman is survived by his daughter, Mary Ann Stram and her husband, Sheldon Kingley of Burnsville, Minnesota; a granddaughter and her husband, Molly and Michael Boylan of Chanhassen, Minnesota; two great-grandchildren, Courtney and Connor; a brother, Max Nye and his wife, Florence of Fertile; three nephews, Roger Nye and wife, Johanna, Jerry Nye and Brian Nye and wife, Cynthia; four step-grandchildren and their spouses, Lenny and Diane, David and Becky, Brian and Lori and Shelly and Ben; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Ardis Anderson of Forest City and her children and families.

Nancy L. Rassman, 44, of Forest City, died on Tuesday, February 25, 2003, at the Muse Norris Hospice in Mason City.

She is survived by her husband, Dennis of Forest City; son, Shane of Cedar Falls; daughter, Sheena of Forest City; her mother, Kathleen Goodbrand of Riceville; two brothers, James Bohneman and wife, Dorothy of Rockford, Minnesota and Larry Goodbrand and wife, Vivian of Riceville; four sisters, Janice Floyd and husband, John of St. George, Utah, Mary Kay Clausen of Elk River, Minnesota, Connie Goodbrand of Riceville and Linda Haugland and husband, Frank of Clear Lake; parents-in-law, Marvin and Esther Shoger of Riceville; two brothers-in-law, James Rassman of North Mankato, Minnesota and Larry Shoger of Las Vegas, Nevada; two sisters-in-law, Betty Bruesewitz of Rosemount, Minnesota and Dorothy Parson and husband, Lee of Charles City; 13 nieces and nephews; and 13 great-nieces and great-nephews.

Ollie Graber, 88, of Woden, died on Wednesday, February 26, 2003, at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.

Funeral services were held on Monday, March 3, at the Cataldo Funeral Home in Woden. The Rev. Arlen Lloyd officiated. Music was provided by organist, Tammy Johnson. Casket bearers were Roger Graber, Robert Graber, Dale Helmers, Robert Freidhof, Daniel Benjegerdes and Michael Graber. Burial was in the Bingham Township Cemetery near Woden.

She is survived by her children, Corrine (Riggle) Melton of Columbus, Georgia, Charles Graber of Woden, Candace (Graber) Benjegerdes and husband, Denis of Manly and DuWayne Graber and wife, Julie of Albert Lea, Minnesota; grandchildren, Candice (Melton) Carlisle and husband, Tim, Elizabeth (Melton) Maunz and husband, Mark, Dr. Cheri (Benjegerdes) Aldrich and husband, Lance, Daniel Benjegerdes, Michael Graber and Laura Graber; four great-grandchildren, Heather, Joey, Zachary and Max; and two great-great-grandchildren, Brandi and Brenton.

Gladys Hocum, 80

March 12, 2003

Gladys Hocum, 80, died on Wednesday, February 26, 2003, in Hardy, Arkansas, following a long illness.

Her husband, Milford Hocum, was a chiropractor in Forest City for many years. She was laid to rest beside her husband in Arkansas.

Survivors include four sons, Douglas, Keven and Roland of Colorado and Brian of Arkansas; a brother, LeRoy Thompson of Forest City; a sister, June Tweed of Forest City; and a sister-in-law, Nadene Schlawin of Forest City.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Lawrence Thompson of Forest City and Arland Thompson of Arkansas; and a sister, May Dunn of Arkansas.

Kevin Scott Whipple, 42, of Clear Lake, died on Thursday, February 27, 2003, at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services were held on Monday, March 3, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel. The Rev. Kermit Roisen officiated. Burial was in the Olena Mound Cemetery in Buffalo Center.

Survivors include his mother, Gladys Sheldon of Clear Lake; two step-sisters, Betty Sheldon of Clear Lake and LaBeth Sasse and her husband, Joel of Thornton; and a very special nephew, Devlynn Sasse.

Henry R. Harringa, 77, of Garner, died on Thursday, February 27, 2003, at the Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, March 4, at the Cataldo Funeral Home in Garner. The Rev. Robert Bronson officiated. Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery in Britt.

He is survived by two sisters, Myrtle Oudekerk of Clear Lake and Hazel Scholl of Mason City; a sister-in-law, Anna Harringa of Forest City; and many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
