School.
He moved
to
Milwaukee,
Wisconsin
and
worked
as a
roofer.
There he
met
Vernelle
Roese
and they
were
married
on
January
4, 1941.
Merle
served
in the
US Army
during
WW II.
After
his
discharge
he
returned
to
Milwaukee
for a
time,
moving
to
Forest
City in
1949 to
start
his own
company,
Sorensen
Roofing
and
Siding.
He
retired
from the
business
in 1972.
For 11
years he
drove a
school
bus for
the
Forest
City
School
District.
Merle
was a
member
of the
Faith
Lutheran
Church
in
Miller,
a member
of the
American
Legion
and VFW
and was
active
in the
Kum
Along
Club at
the
Senior
Citizens
Center.
He liked
to go
hunting
and
fishing
and
enjoyed
playing
golf.
Merle is
survived
by his
sons and
their
spouses,

Violet

Forest
City;

granddaughters,

He was
inducted
into the
U.S.
Navy in
1946,
serving
overseas
during
World
War II
until
his
honorable
discharge
in 1948.
He was
united
in
marriage
to
Eunice
Schilling
on May
29,
1949, at
the
Bethlehem
Lutheran
Church
in
Myrtle,
Minnesota.
Art
worked
as a
mechanic
for
Chrysler
garages
in
Albert
Lea,
Minnesota
and
Northwood
for 25
years
and was
the
Worth
County
shop
mechanic
for 15
years,
until
his
retirement
in 1987.
He
enjoyed
fishing,
camping
and
attending
athletic
events,
especially
the
Waldorf
College
games.
Art was
very
active
and a
life
member
in the
Our
Buddies
VFW
Memorial
Post
6779 of
Northwood.
He also
held
positions
in the
third
district
VFW. He
was
veterans’
affairs
commissioner
of Worth
County
for many
years.
While
his sons
were
growing
up, he
was a
Boy
Scout
Leader
for a
number
of
years.
When the
grandchildren
from
Omaha
came to
visit,
he would
take
them
fishing
to area
lakes,
which
they
always
looked
forward
to. Art
was
afflicted
with
cancer
10 years
ago,
with
frequent
reoccurrences,
but
never
complained
having
treatments
many
times.
He was
one of
the
honorary
chairpersons
for the
Relay
for Life
in
Northwood
in 2001.
He was a
member
of First
Lutheran
Church
in
Northwood.

Athletic
Department,
a
position
she held
for the
past 25
years.
In 1993,
she
received
the
Holman
Community
Service
Award
which is
based on
distinguished
service
to
Waldorf
College,
the
community
of
Forest
City,
church,
civic
organizations
and
volunteer
efforts.
Throughout
her
life,
Patty
had a
passion
for her
family
and
friends.
She
enjoyed
attending
the
Forest
City
Indian
and
Waldorf
College
Warrior
games,
watching
her
daughter,
Tori as
a
cheerleader.
She also
enjoyed
watching
all the
Waldorf
College
athletic
events
and
watching
her
husband,
Barry as
men's
assistant
basketball
coach.
In her
spare
time she
enjoyed
exercising,
especially
running
and
walking
outside
around
her
family's
home.
She
loved
animals,
especially
dogs and
had two
at home,
Hercules
and
Pepsi
Joe.
Pepsi
Joe
never
left her
side as
they had
a
special
bond.
Patty
had
battled
ALS for
the past
months,
but
always
had a
positive
and
cheerful
outlook.
She
loved
knowing
that God
was at
her
side.
She was
a member
of
Winnebago
Lutheran
Church
in rural
Lake
Mills.
What
Patty
loved
more
than
anything
in this
world
was her
family
and
friends.
She had
an
incredible
gift of
connecting
with
people.
She has

he

Director

Board of
College
Education.

1962, to

1963, he

Morem.
He
received

near his

#1. He
married
Evelyn
Leach on
April
19,
1931.
The
couple
lived in
the
Forest
City
area for
many
years.
Ray
farmed
and was
a gifted
mechanic.
Although
his
eyesight
was poor
for much
of his
life, it
didn't
seem to
affect
his
skill at
diagnosing
a
mechanical
problem
with a
car or
motorcycle
and get
it
running
again.
In 1974,
the
couple
retired
from
farming
and
moved to
Forest
City.
Ray was
a member
of the
Pilot
Knob
Lutheran
Church
and he
enjoyed
fishing
and
music.
He was a
devoted
husband
who
regularly
visited
his wife
and
helped
care for
her
during
her stay
at the
Good
Samaritan
Center
in
Forest
City.
Evelyn
died in
1996.
Ray
entered
the Good
Samaritan
Center
in
December
of 1998
and died
there on
December
17, 2003
at the
age of
92
years.
Ray is
survived
by his
daughters
and
their
spouses,
Donna
Eden and
husband,
Harvey
of
Wesley,
Iowa and
Delores
Nyhus
and
husband,
Norman
of
Forest
City;
five
grandchildren;
and ten
great-grandchildren.
He was
preceded
in death
by his
mother;
his
wife,
Evelyn;

and his
aunt,

The
couple
lived in
several
Iowa
communities
before
moving
to
Forest
City in
1961.
Alice
taught
elementary
school
in the
Forest
City
School
District
for 39
years.
She
enjoyed
music,
reading,
going
for
walks
and
loved
sharing
coffee
with her
friends.
As an
active
member
of the
Immanuel
Lutheran
Church,
she
taught
Sunday
School,
sang in
the
church
choir
and was
a member
of
WELCA.
She
especially
enjoyed
time
spent
with her
grandchildren.
In 1993,
she
entered
the Good
Samaritan
Center
in
Forest
City.
She died
there on
December
17, 2003
at the
age of
91
years.

survived
by her

homemaker
who

great
joy in
making a
home for
her

grandchildren.
She was
a member

Grace
Luther
Church,

Circles
and was
involved
in many
other
church
activities.
She was
also a
member
of the
Birthday
Club and
the Twin
Lakes
Card
Club.
She
enjoyed
car
trips,
doll
collecting
and bird
watching.
Survivors

her

School.
He was
inducted
into the
U.S.
Marine
Corps on
July 1,
1953, in
Des
Moines
and was
honorably
discharged
on June
30,
1956, in
Miami,
Florida.
After
his
honorable
discharge,
Jack
came
back to
the
north
Iowa
area and
attended
and
graduated
from
NIACC in
Mason
City and
also
graduated
from the
University
of Iowa
with a
BA
Degree.
After
completing
his
schooling
he
worked
for
State
Farm
Insurance
in Mason
City and
also
worked
for
Allied
Group
Insurance
in Des
Moines
until
his
retirement.
He was
united
in
marriage
to Jean
Diesburg
on
January
7, 1968
in Sioux
Falls,
South
Dakota.
Jack was
very
active
in doing
volunteer
work for
Opportunity
Village
in Clear
Lake and
the
American
Legion
Boy's
State.
He
enjoyed
hunting
and
fishing
with his
family.
He was a
member
of the
St.
Patrick's
Catholic
Church
in Clear
Lake,
past
commander
for the
Veterans
of
Foreign
Wars in
Clear
Lake and
was very
active
in the
Republican
Party in
Iowa.

was
united
in
marriage
to Doris
Elaine
Holtz in
Neillsville.
They
farmed
in the
Globe
area and
Eugene
worked
for the
Wedges
Creek
Research
Farm.
Doris
died on
August
25,
1972.
Eugene
was
later
married
to
Joanne
M.
Chambers
on
August
11,
1973. At
the time
he was
still
working
at the
Wedges
Creek
Research
Farm. He
worked
there
until it
closed
and then
went to
work as
an area
manager
for the
Meridian
Group.
He
worked
there
until
his
retirement.
Eugene
enjoyed
woodworking
and made
many
things
for his
daughters,
grandchildren
and
friends.
He is
survived
by his

She then
attended
and
graduated
from the
School

Cosmetology
in
Minneapolis,
Minnesota.
Vonny
owned
and
operated
Vonny's
Beauty
Shop in
Emmons.
On
September
18,
1945,
she was
united
in
marriage
to
Adolph
S.
"Duffy"
Grunhovd
at the
Emmons
Lutheran
Church.
They
resided
in Ames,
Iowa
until
Duffy
graduated
from
ISU. In
1952,
they
moved to
Lake
Mills
and
opened
up the
first
drive-in
restaurant
in Lake
Mills
called
Duffy's
Drive-In
which
they
operated
for
twenty
years.
Vonny
was food
supervisor
at the
Lake
Mills
Community
School
for
nineteen
years.
After
retirement,
she was
a
volunteer
for
everything
she
could
be. She
was
active
in the
Salem
Lutheran
Church
and was
an
active
member
and Past
President
of the
American
Legion
Auxiliary,
where
she held
various
positions
on both
the
local
and
state
levels.
Vonny is
survived
by her
loving
children,

wife,
Kathleen

of Lake
Mills,
Paul D.
Grunhovd

Minnesota

She
helped
her
husband
as a
bookkeeper
while he
ran the
gas
station.
Joan was
involved
with the
Girl
Scouts
in
Fertile.
She
loved
singing
and
listening
to
music,
knitting,
crocheting,
traveling
and her
pets.
Following
her
husband's
death,
she
moved
back to
her
hometown
of
Foley.
After
returning
home,
she was
very
active
in the
Presbyterian
Church
in
Foley.
Joan was
a member
of the
Church
of
Christ
in
Fertile.
Joan is
survived
by five
sons,
Bruce

of Clear
Lake,

his
wife,

Minneapolis,
Minnesota,

Forest
City.
John
enjoyed
reading,
singing,
playing
musical
instruments,
helping
friends
and
neighbors,
but
mostly
John
enjoyed
talking
about
Jesus.
Many
times he
told his
children,
"For me
to live
is
Christ
but to
die is
gain."
John was
always
concerned
with the
needs of
others
and
continuously
put
others
before
himself.
He was a
loving
and
caring
husband
and
father.
John had
just
served
his 13th
year as
a
Hancock
County
Supervisor.
He is
survived
by his

his

Pearl
was
united
in
marriage
with
Clarence
Thorland
at
Crystal
Lake.
The
couple
made
their
home in
the
rural
Thompson
area
their
entire
lives,
during
which
Pearl
was a
homemaker
and
Clarence
farmed.
Her
hobbies
were
cooking,
embroidering,
putting
puzzles
together
and
raising
flowers.
She will
be
remembered
for
being a
loving
caretaker,
first to
her
parents,
followed
by her
husband
and then
her
extended
family.
Survivors
include
her two
brothers,
Merle
Braadland
and his
wife,
Marge of
Woden
and
Norman
Braadland
and his
wife,
Judy of
Scarville;
brother-in-law,
Edger
Thorland
of
Thompson;
sister-in-law,
Ruth
Nelson
of
Scarville;
an aunt,
Alice
Knutson
of Cedar
Rapids;
along
with
numerous
nieces,
nephews,
cousins
and
friends.
She was
preceded
in death
by her
parents;
husband,
Clarence
in 1992;
and one
brother,
Arnie
Braadland.
