Susan E. Foster

Susan E. Foster, age 61, of
Edwardsville, Illinois, formerly
of Iowa and Arizona, died on
Thursday, November 3, 2011, at
the Christian Hospital NE in St.
Louis, Missouri.
A memorial
visitation was held from 4-8:00
p.m., on Sunday, November 6, at
the Trinity Lutheran Church,
Edwardsville and from 9-11:00
a.m., on Monday, at the church.
Services will follow at 11:00
a.m., on Monday, November 7, at
the church, with Rev. John Shank
and Pastor Marty Springer
officiating. According to her
wishes she was cremated and her
ashes will be scattered in the
Pacific Ocean. Memorials may be
given to the Trinity Lutheran
Church or the Glen-Ed Food
Pantry. The Weber & Rodney
Funeral Home was in charge of
the arrangements. Condolences

Susan was born on
December 16, 1949 in Mason City,
Iowa, the daughter of the late
Dale Perry and Marie (Rabe)
Perry Reese. She was a program
analyst for Syllogistics in
Chesterfield, Missouri, where
she did contract work for the
United States Department of
Agriculture.
Susan was a
member of the Trinity Lutheran
Church in Edwardsville and the
American Legion Auxiliary in
Green Valley, Arizona.
She is survived
by a daughter, Nicole Hudson and
her husband, Scott of Dallas,
Texas; three grandchildren,
Abigail, Charlotte and Foster
Hudson; one brother, Stephen
Perry of Mason City; two
sisters, Vicki Brewster and
husband, Don of Cloquet,
Minnesota and Terri Colby and
her husband, Dave of
Edwardsville; two nieces, Hanna
Theide of Cloquet and Naomi
Bouts and husband, Ben of the
Twin Cities, Minnesota; two
nephews, Philip Colby of Granite
City and Dylan Colby of
Edwardsville; a special friend,
David Schoenleber of
Edwardsville; and several aunts,
uncles, cousins and friends.

Lila Funk
November 9, 2011
Lila Funk, 83, of Charles City,
died on Friday, November 4,
2011, at the 11th Street
Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles
City.
Funeral services
were held at 10:30 a.m., on
Tuesday, at the Hauser Funeral
Home in Charles City. Pastor
Jason Boyd of the Faith Bible
Chapel officiated. Burial was in
the Sunnyside Memory Gardens in
rural Charles City. Friends
called at the Hauser Funeral
Home from 5-7:00 p.m., on Monday
and an hour prior to the
services on Tuesday.
Lila Mae Land
Funk, was born on May 20, 1928
in Chickasaw County, the
daughter of Clayton and Laura
(Myli) Land. She received her
education from rural schools
near Northwood. On January 4,
1946, she married Gilman Sanden.
Gilman died in March of 1950.
Lila married Milfred Leidal on
February 29, 1952 and they later
divorced. On October 13, 1956,
she was united in marriage to
Fred Funk. Fred died on August
8, 1990. Lila worked as a Nurse
Aide at the 11th Street
Chautauqua Guest Home for over
20 years.
She was a member
of the Faith Bible Chapel, where
she taught Sunday School for
many years. Lila had also served
as a Cub Scout Leader for
several years.
Living family
members include five children,
Loretta Starkey of Charles City,
Russell Sanden of Gordonsville,
Minnesota, Tim (Vicki) Leidal of
Charles City, Tom Leidal of
Osage and Carol (John) Hermsdorf
of Jacksonville, Florida; 10
grandchildren, Kimberly Starkey,
Travis Sanden, Trena (Jeff)
Bulau, Tracie Sanden and fiancé
Rich Roberts, Tara Sanden and
special friend Tony Hagen, Adam
(Jen) Leidal, Lucas Leidal and
fiancée Hannah Parks, Michael
(Elisha) Schuchhardt and Lauren
(Frankie) LaMon; 10
great-grandchildren; a brother,
Harry (Mary) Land of Swisher;
three sisters, Luan Sallee and
Lily (Johnny) Anderson, both of
Albert Lea, Minnesota and
Caroline Kalvig of Northwood;
and a brother-in-law, Roger
Christiansen of Lake Mills.
She was preceded
in death by her parents;
husbands; a daughter, Cathy
Funk; a son-in-law, Larry
Starkey; a granddaughter, Sherry
Starkey; a brother, Andrew Land;
and a sister, Frances
Christiansen.
The Hauser
Funeral Home, in Charles City,
was in charge of the
arrangements.

Gayle Boutelle
November 16, 2011
Gayle Idella Boutelle, 92, of
Kensett and Northwood, died on
Saturday, November 5, 2011, at
the Manly Nursing &
Rehabilitation Center.
According to her
wishes, there will be no service
and her body was donated to the
University of Iowa Hospital
Anatomy Department to help in
the study for the cure of
diseases. Should friends desire,
memorial contributions should be
sent to Randy Bratrud, Kensett
in her memory. The Conner
Colonial Chapel, Northwood, is
in charge of the arrangements.
Gayle Idella
Boutelle, was born on August 7,
1919 in Thompson, Iowa, the
daughter of Emery and Flora
(Bailey) Ashpole. Gayle received
her education in the Thompson
Community School, graduating
from the Thompson High School.
Gayle was united in marriage to
Donald Boutelle on February 6,
1940. Donald preceded her in
death.
Survivors include
a son, Ron Boutelle of
Corvallis, Oregon; two
grandchildren, Tina and Steve
Boutelle; a special nephew,
Allan (Dorothy) Bratrud of
Kensett; a special niece,
Dorothy Torkelson of Buffalo
Center; as well as other special
nieces, nephews, grandnieces and
nephews, and other extended
family members and friends.
Gayle was
preceded in death by her
parents, Emery and Flora
Ashpole; her husband, Donald;
and a son, Craig who died on
March 1, 2011.

Doris A. Sawin
November 16, 2011
Doris A. (Vaughn) Sawin, 91, of
Bridgewater, New Jersey, died on
Saturday, November 5, 2011, at
the Arbor Glen Retirement
Community.
A service
celebrating Doris’s life will be
held in Northwood, during
Memorial Day weekend. In lieu of
flowers, gifts may be made to
the music programs of the
Northwood United Methodist
Church or to the Bridgewater
United Methodist Church, in
Bridgewater, New Jersey.
Doris was born in
Rolfe, Iowa, attended Iowa State
University and married Russel
Sawin on December 7, 1941. They
farmed near Northwood and then
Kensett for 35 years, before
moving into Northwood in 1976.
Doris moved to Bridgewater in
2004.
Doris enjoyed
music and sang in choruses and
church choirs from her youth
until a few months ago. She was
a member of Eastern Star for
over 60 years.
Her husband, her
sister, Marjory Hertz, and her
brother, Alvin Vaughn, died
earlier.
Doris is survived
by five children, Polly (Tom)
Tatton of Stockton, California,
Steven (Roni) Sawin of
Bridgewater, New Jersey, Fred
(Betty) Sawin of St. Joseph,
Missouri, Bob (Mary) Sawin of
Kensett, and Herb (Ronnie) Sawin
of Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts;
a sister, Louise Oleson; seven
grandchildren, Leslie Kepner,
Curtis Sawin, Tiffany Brennan,
Morgan Sawin, Jennifer Bloss,
Nicholas Sawin and Lena Sawin;
and seven great-grandchildren.

Harvey Hanson
November 16, 2011
Harvey M. Hanson, 68, of St.
Ansgar, died on Thursday,
November 10, 2011, in Waterloo,
Iowa, of a heart attack.
Funeral services
were held on Tuesday, November
15, at 11:00 a.m., at the First
Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar,
with Rev. Paul Weeg officiating.
Burial was in the Sunset Rest
Cemetery, Northwood. Visitation
was held on Monday, November 14,
from 5-8:00 p.m., at the
Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home,
St. Ansgar.
Harvey Mathias
Hanson, was born on April 7,
1943 in rural Worth County, to
Carl and Thelma (Rohne) Hanson.
He was the youngest of six
children. He attended rural
country schools, Otranto Public
School and Carpenter High
School, graduating in 1961.
Harvey graduated from Waldorf
College in Forest City, in 1963
and from Iowa State University
in Ames in 1967, with a Bachelor
of Science Degree in Animal
Science. For 19 years Harvey was
employed by the Hormel
Corporation as a Livestock Buyer
in Ringsted, Iowa and St.
Ansgar. He resigned in 1985 to
begin his own buying and
livestock-transportation
business, aptly named Double H
Livestock, Ltd. He operated the
business up until his death.
On September 17,
1966, Harvey married Gwenyth
Hillman at the First Lutheran
Church in Northwood. They made
their home in Austin, Minnesota,
Ringsted, rural Grafton and St.
Ansgar, Iowa. They had three
children, sons, Kevin and
Cameron and daughter, Kathryn.
Harvey was an active member of
the First Lutheran Church in St.
Ansgar, serving as a Deacon and
on the church council. He
especially enjoyed spending time
with his grandchildren and
driving semi. Harvey will also
be remembered for his baritone
voice, singing solos in church,
at weddings and at funerals.
Living family
members include his wife of 45
years, Gwenyth of St. Ansgar;
son, Kevin Hanson and Stacy of
Osage and their children, Jenna,
Jayden and Joryn; son, Cameron
Hanson and his wife, Stephanie
of Charles City and their two
sons, Carter and Brady; and
daughter, Kathryn Mills and her
husband, Chad of Northwood and
their two sons, Tyler and
Justin; his siblings, Wayne
(Mavis) Hanson of Mona, Craig
(Marilyn) Hanson of Northwood,
Luther (Ila) Hanson of Des
Moines, Sharon (Robert) Gordon
of Spirit Lake and Darlene
Meling of Northfield, Minnesota;
a brother-in-law and his wife,
Wayne and Wanda Hillman of
Northwood; and many nieces and
nephews, great-nieces,
great-nephews and cousins.
Harvey was
preceded in death by his
parents, Carl and Thelma Hanson,
and parents-in-law, Harry and
Evelyn (Sime) Hillman, all of
Northwood.
