Community Deals with Tragic Loss

May 18, 2011

Last Tuesday morning a young girl lost her life following a tragic traffic accident. On the morning of Tuesday, May 10, seven year old Kadyn Halverson was struck and killed in a hit and run accident while she was walking across Raven Avenue to board her school bus. The bus, which was heading northbound on Raven, north of 430th Street, had stopped, with its lights flashing and stop signal extended.

Halverson was struck by a pickup traveling southbound, which failed to stop for the school bus. The driver fled the scene, according to the Iowa State Patrol, but was later apprehended. The driver of the pickup has been identified as Aaron Gunderson, 31, of Northwood. Gunderson was taken to the Worth County Sheriff’s Department for questioning and was later released. Evidence collected in relation to the incident has reportedly been sent to the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation to be processed. It was estimated that results of the evidence collected will not be available for at least a month, after which charges will be filed against Gunderson.

The accident naturally left the community shocked and reeling. Many first learned of the accident through a district-wide automated call from Northwood-Kensett Superintendent Tom Nugent. The message was intended to deliver the tragic news to parents whose children would be coping with the loss.

A benefit for the Kadyn Halverson family will be held this Saturday, May 21, from 9 a.m. to noon, at the Northwood Baptist Church. It will include baked goods, a silent auction and a free will donation. An account has also been opened at NSB Bank. Donations may be sent to the Kadyn Halverson account, at NSB Bank, PO Box 108, Northwood, Iowa 50459; or may be dropped off at NSB Bank locations in Northwood or Mason City.
