Joseph “Joe” Lauffer Orth, 87,
of Northwood, died on Friday,
March 11, 2011, at the Lutheran
Retirement Home in Northwood.
A celebration of
life and remembrance service for
Joe will be held at 10:30 a.m.
today (Wednesday), March 16,
2011, at the Northwood United
Methodist Church, Northwood,
with Pastor Wendi Gillan
officiating. A Masonic service
will be held today (Wednesday)
at the church by members of the
Northern Light Masonic Lodge of
Northwood. Military honors will
also be conducted by members of
the Our Buddies VFW Memorial
Post 6779 of Northwood. The
family of Joe would like to
suggest that those wishing to
give a memorial in his name may
wish to consider memorial
contributions be made to the
Lutheran Retirement Home in
Northwood, Hospice of North Iowa
and to the Northwood United
Methodist Church in his memory.
Joseph Lauffer
Orth, was born on January 8,
1924 in Hastings, Nebraska, the
son of Frank Jacob and Frieda
(Busboom) Orth. Joe grew up in
Des Moines and graduated from
the Roosevelt High School. Joe
was inducted into the U.S. Army
on February 21, 1943, at Ft. Des
Moines and served overseas as an
airplane armorer gunner in the
Southern France, Air Combat
Balkans, Northern France,
Rome-Arno, Po Valley, Central
Europe and Northern Apennines
campaigns, and was honorably
discharged for his faithful
service on August 15, 1945, at
the Jefferson Barracks,
Missouri.
Joe entered
college on the G.I. Bill and
attended Grinnell College
graduating with a BA Degree in
Economics in 1949. He was united
in marriage to Mary Ellen
Veenker on May 20, 1951, at the
Methodist church in Northwood
and to this union three children
were born, John, Frank and
Gretchen. After their marriage
Joe worked at a packing plant in
Des Moines for a short period.
In 1952, Joe and Mary Ellen
moved to Northwood, where Joe
began his career at a RCA
dealership selling and repairing
TVs and radios until 1962. Being
artistically inclined, Joe
painted a water color picture of
the Clear Lake amusement park.
Joe also attended the University
of Northern Iowa in the early
1960s teaching art classes in
Mason City, Waterloo and
Independence.
Joe was elected
to the Northwood City Council
from 1958 to 1961, was elected
Northwood mayor from 1968 to
1971, and again was elected
mayor from 1976 to 1983. As
mayor of Northwood, Joe was
instrumental in writing a
federal grant that started the
Northwood Public Library and
Northwood’s first aquatic
center. Joe had an interest in
developing high tech industries
for Northwood. His research and
development ventures included
the inception of Northern
Engineering, Mico Assemblies and
Accu-Mold. Joe was a member of
the United Methodist Church in
Northwood, Our Buddies VFW
Memorial Post #6779 of Northwood
and the Northern Light Masonic
Lodge of Northwood. Joe enjoyed
trout fishing, cribbage, bridge,
sailing, ping pong, chess, and
hunting, snow skiing and
swimming. Throughout his life,
Joe was actively involved and
interested in fine art.
Those left to
cherish his memory are his
children, John (Molly) Orth of
Minneapolis, Minnesota, Dr.
Frank (Sandra) Orth of Columbus,
Ohio and Gretchen (Russ) Gondek
of Sioux City; two
grandchildren, Hannah and Hunter
Orth; as well as other extended
family members and friends.
Joe was preceded
in death by his parents; and two
sisters, Emma Lou Orth and
Margaret Kaderli.

Delores Jean Johnson
March 16, 2011
Delores Jean Johnson, 81, of
Northwood, died on Friday, March
11, 2011, at the Mitchell County
Regional Health Center in Osage.
Funeral services
were held at 11:00 a.m., on
Tuesday, March 15, at the Conner
Colonial Chapel, Northwood, with
Pastor Barbara Wills
officiating. Burial was in the
South Shell Rock Cemetery, rural
Northwood. Visitation was held
one hour prior to the service
time on Tuesday at the chapel.
Delores Jean
(Hrubetz) Johnson, was born on
June 16, 1929 in rural Kensett,
the daughter of Edward and Nina
(Helgeson) Hrubetz. She was
baptized and reaffirmed the
faith of her baptism through
confirmation at the Bethany
Lutheran Church in Kensett.
Delores attended school in
Kensett and graduated from the
Kensett High School. During her
life, Delores was a home care
giver for the elderly. Delores
also enjoyed being a home maker
on the farm in rural Northwood.
Delores was united in marriage
to Omer Dean Johnson on October
21, 1950, at the Lutheran
Parsonage in Northwood. Omer
preceded her in death on January
5, 2008.
Delores enjoyed
canning, her vegetable garden
and bird watching, but her
greatest love and enjoyment was
her family and grandchildren.
Delores was a member of the
First Lutheran Church in
Northwood and the Sarah Circle
at the church.
Those left to
cherish her memory are her
children, Dennis (Janelle)
Johnson of Northwood, Janice
(Dennis) Finch of Carpenter and
Bret Johnson of Northwood; five
grandchildren, Aric Finch, Jay
(Jaime) Johnson, Jack Johnson
and his fiancé, Jamie Hindley,
Ben Johnson and Brock Johnson;
three great-grandchildren, Jacey
Finch and Sasha and Brynn
Johnson; many nieces, nephews
and many other extended family
members and friends; and the
family dog, Buddy.
Delores was
preceded in death by her
parents; husband, Omer; two
brothers, Dale and Lee Hrubetz;
and a sister, Luella Roggeman.

Vivian Decker Quam
March 23, 2011
Vivian Decker Quam, 78, of
Northwood, formerly of Floyd and
Nashua, died on Saturday, March
19, 2011, at the Heritage Care
Center in Mason City.
Funeral services
will be held at 10:30 a.m., on
Wednesday, at the First Lutheran
Church in Northwood. Pastor
Karen Grandall will officiate.
Burial will be in the Sunnyside
Memory Gardens, rural Charles
City. Memorials may be directed
to the First Lutheran Church
Quilters Club. The Hauser
Funeral Home in Charles City, is
in charge of the arrangements.
Vivian Nelda Ida
Kalke Decker Quam, was born on
January 19, 1933 in Floyd
County, the daughter of Milo and
Viola (Kamin) Kalke. She
graduated from the Floyd High
School. Vivian also attended
North Iowa Area Community
College and Iowa State
University for income tax
courses. On September 9, 1950,
she was united in marriage to
Lloyd Decker at Austin,
Minnesota. Lloyd died on October
1, 1994. Vivian married Gaylen
Quam on May 4, 1996 at
Northwood. For many years,
Vivian was a tax consultant in
Charles City and then at
Northwood. She thoroughly
enjoyed meeting people and
working with numbers and math.
Vivian was a
member of the First Lutheran
Church. Her interests included
reading, sewing and canning. She
sewed over 500 quilt tops for
Lutheran World Relief. Vivian
also enjoyed singing in the past
with the choir at Grace United
Methodist Church in Floyd and
was the soloist for many
weddings at the Little Brown
Church. She will always be
remembered for her love of
others and sharing life’s
experiences with them.
Living family
members include her husband,
Gaylen Quam of Northwood; a
daughter, Joy (Tom) Krieger of
Nashua; three sons, Michael
Decker of Sanborn, Russell
(Wendy) Decker of Osage and Gene
Quam of Northwood; seven
grandchildren, Jennifer Foote,
Jesse Krieger, Luke Decker,
Matthew Decker, Justin Kadner,
Josh Decker and Trevor Decker;
eight great-grandchildren; a
sister, Nona Smith of Dike; and
many beloved nieces and nephews.
She was preceded
in death by her parents; and
husband, Lloyd.

Doris Evelyn Janssen
March 30, 2011
Doris Evelyn Janssen, 84, died
on Monday, March 21, 2011, at
her home in Northwood, Iowa.
Funeral services
were held at 11:00 a.m., on
Saturday, March 26, at the First
Lutheran Church, Northwood, with
Rev. Ed Bard and Rev. Karen
Grandall officiating. Burial was
in the Sunset Rest Cemetery.
Visitation was held on Friday
evening from 5-7:00 p.m., at the
Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home,
Northwood.
Doris was born on
April 12, 1926 in Mason City,
Iowa, to John and Isabel
(Butcher) Deardeuff. She
attended school through the
eighth grade at Bath #4 in Mason
City and graduated from the
Rockwell Public School in 1943.
She furthered her education and
graduated from Hamilton Business
College. She married Benjamin
Janssen on December 4, 1949 in
Mason City, Iowa and to this
union two children were born.
They farmed on the family farm
east of Northwood until moving
into Northwood in 1977. She
worked as a secretary at the
Monroe Junior High and as
secretary and treasurer at First
Lutheran Church, Northwood.
Doris considered
it an honor to serve her church
family at First Lutheran as
parish secretary, treasurer and
board member for many years. She
treasured her time with family
and friends and loved to play
games of all kinds, including
crosswords and jumbles. Bud and
Doris were proud members of the
Grapevine Twist Square-Dance
Club of Albert Lea, Minnesota.
They traveled often with the
group dancing in parades, at
fairs, in community centers and
on one memorable occasion on the
Continental Divide. She was a
member of Julia Circle and the
Sorosis Club, as well as a
longtime volunteer with Meals on
Wheels. Doris was an excellent
cook, especially known for her
pies, butter horn rolls and
potato salad. Doris enjoyed lake
fishing with Bud, including an
annual trip with relatives and
friends to Lake Osakis each
Labor Day weekend. Bud and Doris
also traveled to California
several times during the 18
years their daughter lived and
worked in the San Francisco Bay
area.
She was preceded
in death by her husband,
Benjamin Dale Janssen on
November 6, 2009; her parents;
sister, Irma and her husband,
Orville Throne; brother, Donald
and his wife, Maxine Deardeuff;
nieces, Nancy and Jan Deardeuff;
nephew, Michael Janssen;
brother-in-law, Donald Jansse;
and sister-in-law, Marlys
Janssen.
Doris is survived
by her son, John Janssen of
Northwood; daughter, Mary
Janssen of Northwood; brother,
Les (Joan) Deardeuff of
Rockwell; sisters, Marge Evans
of Mason City and Arlene
VanSabben of Northwood; her
102-year-old aunt, Mary Summa of
McMinnville, Tennessee; and many
nieces, nephews and cousins.

Earl Von Akemann
March 30, 2011
Earl Von Akemann, age 69, of
McIntire, Iowa, died on
Thursday, March 24, 2011, at the
Good Samaritan Center.
Funeral services
were held at 2:00 p.m., on
Monday, March 28, at the
Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Chapel.
Rev. Kent Otterman officiated.
Interment will be at a later
date. Visitation was from 3-6:00
p.m., on Sunday, March 27, at
Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home
and one hour prior to the
services.
Earl Von Akemann,
was born on August 28, 1941, to
Marvin F. and Alice Lea
(Anderson) Akemann in Albert
Lea. He attended school in
Freeborn. Earl and Nola Baldwin
were married in 1966 and from
this union two children were
born. They were later divorced.
After school, he moved west and
began driving a logging truck.
Earl worked as a pilot, owned an
excavation business and was a
truck owner/operator for 42
years. He received many million
mile awards for safe driving.
Earl had his pilot’s license for
over 50 years.
Earl was an
active member of the Jaycees. He
enjoyed tinkering on equipment
and fixing a variety of things.
He took great pride in the
restoration of his John Deere
620 tractor. He will be dearly
missed by his family.
Survivors include
children, Tim (Kelly) Akemann of
Northwood and Jim “JB” (Deb)
Akemann of Albert Lea;
grandchildren, Alyssa (Josh)
Iverson and Trent Akemann of
Northwood and Jeremy Wenzel,
Tucker Akemann and Triniti
Akemann, all of Albert Lea;
great-grandchildren, Dylan Tews
and Payton Wenzel; sisters,
Dorothy (Stephen) Kutzler of
Dodge Center, Phyllis (Melvin)
Schumaker of Kiester and Darlyne
(Steven) Augustin of Byron;
brother, Randy (Mary) Akemann of
Emmons; and many nieces and
nephews.
Earl was preceded
in death by his parents; and
sister, Mary Alice in 1969.

Marlin Dennis Flatness
March 30, 2011
Marlin Dennis Flatness, of
Glenville, Minnesota, died on
Saturday evening, March 26,
2011, at the Albert Lea Good
Samaritan Home. He was 80 years
of age.
Funeral services
will be held at 11:00 a.m.
today, Wednesday, March 30,
2011, at the First Lutheran
Church in Glenville, Minnesota.
Pastor Krista Stokke will
officiate. Visitation will be
held one hour prior to the
services at the church.
Interment will be in the
Greenwood Cemetery, Glenville.
Marlin was born
on November 11, 1930 in
Northwood, Iowa, the son of
Clarence and Sena (Hauge)
Flatness. He attended public
school in Albert Lea and on
April 3, 1954, was united in
marriage to Donna Mandt. Marlin
was engaged in farming and
worked part time at the John
Deere dealership in Northwood.
He drove road grader for the
Shell Rock Township for many
years and raised cattle on his
farm. Marlin spent many years on
the township board. He served
his country in the U.S. Army,
being discharged in 1954.
Marlin loved
sports and enjoyed going to the
children’s sporting events. In
the summer he would go to the
county fairs to show livestock.
He always had a pet cat around
the house.
Marlin is
survived by his children, Todd
and Christine of Amboy,
Minnesota and Tracy and Julie of
Coon Rapids, Minnesota;
grandchildren, Michael and Lynn
Flatness and Nathan (Danya)
Olson; brothers and sisters,
Donald (Janet) Flatness of
Glenville, Minnesota, Lois
(Archie) Lau of Albert Lea,
Minnesota, Janice Houg of
Glenville, Minnesota and Lyle
(Barb) Flatness of Maquoketa,
Iowa; son-in-law, Steven Olson
of Albert Lea, Minnesota;
brother in law, Alfred (Delores)
Mandt of Urbandale, Minnesota;
and sister-in-law, Lois Flatness
of Albert Lea, Minnesota; and
numerous nieces and nephews.
Marlin was
preceded in death by his
parents; wife, Donna in 1997;
daughter, Debra Olson; brother,
Richard Flatness; and
