Roy Calgaard

October 22, 2008

Roy Calgaard, 83, died in Lincoln, California, on Saturday, October 4, 2008.

Visitation was held on Tuesday, October 21, at the Bethany Lutheran Church Joice, from 6-8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Wednesday, October 22, at the Bethany Lutheran Church, with interment to be for both Roy and Beverly following. Memorials may be directed to the Bethany Lutheran Church or the charity of one's choice.

Roy was born on April 16, 1925 at rural Joice, to Oscar & Martha Calgaard. His family moved to Fertile where he graduated from the Fertile High School. Roy was united in marriage to Beverly Haugen on April 21, 1945. He lived at rural Fertile, Joice, Lake Mills, Clear Lake, and after his wife's death in Lincoln, California.

Roy's life was full of memories enjoying many different things from his days in High School musicals, local sporting events, hunting and fishing trips, traveling, golfing, attending the Super Bowl only to see the Vikings lose, and in later years watching his grandson play numerous sports.

Roy served as a County Supervisor for Worth County, also served on the ASCS County Committee, adjusted hail for Farmers Mutual, and was a lifelong farmer. He was involved in many church activities. He was proud of the fact that he was baptized, confirmed, married and will be buried all at the Bethany Lutheran Church of Joice. He was a past president of the Sons of Norway, where he was President of the Year in 1973 and served on numerous area boards.

Roy loved to visit. Give him a cup of coffee and someone to visit with and life was good and all the better if it was a free cup of coffee at the elevator.

Roy is survived by is daughter and son-in-law, Dr. Barbara and Ron Nelson of Lincoln, California; son, Danny Calgaard of Naples, Florida; and three grandchildren, Christina Maulsby and her husband, Grant of Naples, Florida, Nicholas Calgaard of Naples, Florida and Erica Calgaard of Des Moines; sister, Judy Harris; sister in-law, Joyce Calgaard; and many lifelong friends.

Raymond F. Ver Helst

October 29, 2008

Raymond F. Ver Helst, 85, of Mason City, died on Wednesday, October 15, 2008, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m., on Saturday, October 18, at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, Mason City, with the Rev. Jim Stiles of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Burial was in the Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Raymond Francis Ver Helst, was born on April 23, 1923 in Mason City, the son of August and Mary (Mannens) Ver Helst. He graduated from the Rock Falls High School. After high school, Raymond helped his family farm. Raymond was united in marriage to Isabelle Grier-Layman on August 24, 1950, at the Wesley United Methodist Church in Mason City. In 1952 Isabelle and Raymond moved to Mason City where they raised their family.

Raymond worked at the Floyd and Leonard Auto Electric, Mason City Appliance and retired from Hardware Hank in Mason City and Nora Springs. After retiring he was retained as the Chief Consulting Engineer at Wendy's in Mason City.

Raymond is survived by his wife, Isabelle Ver Helst of Mason City; children, Jack (Sharon) Ver Helst of Boone and David (Anne) Ver Helst of Mason City; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; siblings, Marguerite "Sis" Haight of Mason City and Don (Doris) Ver Helst of Nora Springs; along with several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Raymond was preceded in death by his parents; son, James Ver Helst; brother, Jerry Ver Helst; and brother- in-law, Keith Haight.

David O. Nicholson

October 29, 2008

David O. Nicholson, 83, of Northwood, died on Sunday, October 19, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m., on Thursday, October 23, at the Elk Creek Lutheran Church, Kensett. Reverend Tom Martin officiated. Burial was in the Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood, with military graveside honors conducted by members of "Our Buddies" Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6779 of Northwood. Visitation was held from 4-6:00 p.m., on Wednesday, at the Conner Colonial Chapel, Northwood. Visitation was also held one hour prior to the service time on Thursday at the church. The family of David O. Nicholson has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Elk Creek Lutheran Church or to the Hospice of North Iowa in his memory.

David O. Nicholson was born on April 8, 1925 in New Castle, Pennsylvania, the son of Eugene and Rose (Dess) Nicholson. He was baptized on May 3, 1925, at the St. Joseph's Church in New Castle. David attended grade school in Alden, Minnesota and also attended the Albert Lea, Minnesota High School. He was inducted into the U.S. Army on May 9, 1945, at Ft. Snelling, Minnesota, and served overseas during World War II with the 57th Field Hospital and was honorably discharged on October 27, 1946 at Ft. George G. Meade, Maryland.

He was united in marriage to Anna Marie Miller on November 20, 1948, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. She preceded him in death on December 27, 2005. David farmed in Brookfield Township west of Northwood from 1948 until his retirement from farming in 1970. David also drove Winnebago's R.V.'s with his wife, Anna and also worked for the Trading Post in Gordonsville, Minnesota.

David enjoyed woodworking, fishing, and driving cars at the Trading Post, but his great love and enjoyment was spending time with his family and friends. He was a member of the Elk Creek Lutheran Church in Kensett.

Those left to cherish his memory are his children, Nancy (Darrell) Klingfuss of Northwood, Donna (Russell) Hayes of Midland, Texas, Bill (Terry) Nicholson of Northwood and Tina (Joe) Kuennen of Northwood; ten grandchildren, Mark and Brian Klingfuss of Northwood, Nikole Nicholson of Mason City, Alexandria and McKensie Nicholson of Northwood, Andra Lea (Ed) Hall of Midland, Texas, Emily (Mark) Hayes-Slade of Midland, Texas, Anna Kuennen of Duluth, Minnesota, Laura Kuennen of Northwood and Heather (Paul) Chambers of Charles City; a great-granddaughter, Tiffany Mari Slade of Midland, Texas; as well as many other extended family members and friends.

His parents; wife, Anna Marie; a son, David Nicholson; and a sister, Pearl Thompson preceded him in death.

John Byron Byrd, M.D.

November 5, 2008

John Byron Byrd, M.D., passed away on Monday, October 27, 2008. He died in an automobile crash south of Wood Lake, Nebraska. John had spent the day in a place he loved best, the sand hills of Nebraska, doing what he loved, hunting prairie chicken and grouse, riding horses and running his dogs.

Memorial services were held at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, November 1, 2008, at the St. Boniface Church in Elgin, Nebraska. Services will also be held at 10:00 a.m., on Saturday, November 8, at the First Lutheran Church in Northwood. The family has requested memorials be made to the Wood Lake Fire Department, Wood Lake, Nebraska.

John was born in Amarillo, Texas on September 13, 1944, the son of Roy and Katy (Black) Byrd. At a young age he was out hunting and fishing with his older brother, Roy Neal. John graduated from high school in Valentine, Nebraska. He attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. From there he graduated from medical school at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha in 1969.

John loved medicine and loved caring for his patients. John actively taught the art of medicine to medical students and residents. He was boarded in Family Medicine and Geriatrics. John recently retired at the age of 63 after 39 years as a family physician. He practiced primarily in Kimball, Nebraska, Valentine, Nebraska, Neligh, Nebraska, Sargent, Nebraska and Northwood. He prided himself on staying current on medicine, attending lots of meetings, reading the latest medical literature, as well as reading textbooks.

John had many hobbies, including a lifelong love of hunting and fishing. More recently he became very involved in cutting horses, initially riding them and then starting his own business, John Byrd Quarter horses, breeding, training, buying and selling and still working on mastering the art of riding a cutting horse. John was an avid reader, a budding photographer and dabbled in gourmet cooking. He was a citizen of the Chickasaw Nation of Oklahoma.

John is survived by his wife, Phyllis of Northwood; and his son, Jay of Northwood; daughters, Jodi Byrd and Elizabeth Tsukahara of Champaign, Illinois; sons, Matt and wife, Cherie of Ogallala, Nebraska and Chad and wife, Carrie of Wenatchee, Washington; his parents, Roy and Katy of Toyahvale, Texas; brothers, Roy of Park City, Utah, Jeff of Kilene, Texas and George; sister, Becky of Abilene, Texas; grandchildren, Samantha Byrd of Ogallala, Nebraska, James, Luke, Abby, Megan and Trey Byrd of Wenatchee Washington, Jacob and Andrew Henery of Neligh, Nebraska.

Paul Allen Grosland

November 5, 2008

Paul Allen Grosland, age 67, of Austin, died at the St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, on Wednesday, October 29, 2008.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, November 1, at the St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin, with Pastor Ron Barnett officiating. Visitation was from 6-8:00 p.m., on Friday, at the Worlein Funeral Home in Austin and at the church one hour prior to the service on Saturday. Interment was in the Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood, Iowa.

He was born on April 10, 1941 in Northwood, Iowa, the son of Oscar and Inah (Hanson) Grosland. Baptized and confirmed at the First Lutheran Church, Paul attended 13 years of school on the same block in Northwood, graduating with the class of 1959. He attended Mason City Junior College in Mason City, Iowa before moving to Minnesota, where he attend Mankato State College and served three years in the National Guard.

On August 26, 1961, he was united in marriage to Ruth Hempen at the First Lutheran Church in Northwood. They made their home in Cedar Falls where Paul earned his BA Degree in Elementary Education at the State College of Iowa in 1963. He taught sixth grade for nine years in Fertile and Mason City, Iowa and Albert Lea. He got his Master’s Degree in Audio Visual Library from Mankato State College in 1971. He was a school librarian in Fort Dodge, Northwood and at the Area Education Agency in Ottumwa, Iowa. Moving back to Minnesota, he was the District Media Director for the Austin Public Schools for 23 years, retiring in 1999. Paul spent 53 years of his life going to school. After retirement from the school system, he worked at Hormel Foods Corp. in aircraft cleaning for seven years.

He enjoyed photography and his I-Mac computer, spending time with his family, traveling and doing day trips. Paul and Ruth went on an Alaskan cruise and also to Norway.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth of Austin; son, Dan Grosland of Inver Grove Heights; daughter, Michelle (David) Phillips of Faribault; granddaughter, Julia Phillips of Faribault; brothers, Virgil Grosland of Plymouth and David (Diane) Grosland of Fort Dodge, Iowa; sisters, Mavis (Richard) Nelson of Albert Lea, Kerma Hammer of North Carolina and JoAnn (James) Villa of Lake Mills, Iowa; and sister-in-law, Talora “Tillie” Grosland of Albert Lea.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Inah Grosland; brother, LaVon Grosland; and a niece, Marilyn Hillman.
