Shirley Ann Carroll

Shirley Ann Carroll, 70, died on Thursday, July 3, 2008, at
the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m., on Monday, July 7,
at the Hogan Bremer Moore Colonial Chapel, Mason City, with
Pastor Kent A. Mechler officiating. Burial was in the
Bohemian Cemetery, Plymouth. Visitation was held one hour
prior to the services on Monday at the funeral home.
Shirley Ann Helmich, was born on January 16, 1938 in
Humboldt, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Grace (Voss)
Helmich. She attended the Kensett High School. Shirley was
united in marriage to LeRoy Anderson in 1958 and to this
union three children were born. In November of 1980, she was
united in marriage to Bernard Carroll and to this union a
daughter was born.
Shirley was a homemaker for most of her life. She loved
embroidery, handwork, playing cards, Yahtze, doodling,
cooking, collecting dolls and tea pots. She was a member of
the Bethany Lutheran Church, Kensett.
Shirley is survived by her children, Rodney Leroy Anderson
of Mason City and Susan Marie Carroll and special friend,
Chris Monson of Mason City; nephew, Mark Palmer of Mason
City; sisters-in-law, Sharon (Chuck) Peterson of Northfield,
Minnesota and Betty Harang of Chicago, Illinois; along with
other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bernard
Carroll; infant children, Teresa Kay Anderson and Robert
Alan Anderson; and one sister, Donna Robbins.

Bernice Arlene
Bride
July 24, 2008
Bernice Arlene Bride, 88, died on Saturday, July 5, 2008, at
the Mercy Medical Center North Iowa, Mason City.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, July
12, at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, with Pastor Linda
Johnson-Presholt officiating. Burial was in the Manly
Cemetery, Manly. Visitation was held from 5-7:00 p.m., at
the Bride Colonial Chapel, Manly. Memorials may be directed
to the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Manly.
Bernice was born on April 17, 1920 in Danville Township,
Worth County, the daughter of Ole L. and Bertha Ovidia (Sparby)
Roslien. She graduated from the Kensett High School and
completed her schooling graduating from Waldorf College.
After graduation she started work at the Manly State Bank.
Bernice was united in marriage to Robert C. Bride on
February 4, 1943 in Mesa, Arizona and to this union two
children were born.
After Robert's discharge from the Army Air Corps they
returned to Manly and in 1948 purchased the Bride Funeral
Home from his parents. Bernice assisted with the operation
of the funeral home as well as serving on the board of the
Manly State Bank.
During retirement she enjoyed wintering in Arizona and
traveling which normally included some work on researching
historical records and genealogy. Bernice was particularly
proud of finding family artifacts that she was able to
donate to several museums in Iowa and Wisconsin. She enjoyed
playing Bridge with numerous friends.
Bernice was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church,
63-year member of the American Legion Auxiliary, 56-year
member of the Heatherhill Chapter of the Order of the
Eastern Star where she served as a Worthy Matron and she
participated in several other local groups.
Left to cherish her memory is her son, Robert Bride Jr. and
wife, Marcia of Apple Valley, California; granddaughters,
Nicole Lipton and her husband, Shawn of Seattle, Washington
and Jessica Bride of San Francisco, California; along with
other relatives and numerous friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert
Bride; and infant daughter, Mary Ann Bride.

LuVern "Pete"
Edward Oakland
July 24, 2008
LuVern "Pete" Edward Oakland, 71, of Albert Lea, Minnesota,
died on Friday, July 11, 2008, at the St. John's Lutheran
Home, from a long battle with cancer.
Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m., on Wednesday, July
16, at the United Methodist Church, Albert Lea. The Reverend
David Gray officiated. Interment was in the Hillcrest
Cemetery, Albert Lea. Visitation was from 4-8:00 p.m., on
Tuesday, at the Bonnerup Funeral Service Chapel, Albert Lea
and one hour before the services at the church. Memorials
will be donated to the Freeborn County Relay for Life.
Pete was born on April 1, 1937 in Gordonsville, Freeborn
County, Minnesota to Lawrence and Carol (Barber) Oakland. He
graduated from the Northwood, Iowa High School. He moved to
Albert Lea from the Gordonsville area in 1962. Pete was a
member of the United Methodist Church, Albert Lea. He worked
in the excavating business with his father and also drove
school bus for the Northwood School District.
Pete worked for the Interstate Power Company/Alliant Energy
for 42 years. He retired in 2002. From 1998-2001 he served
as President for the IBEW local union #941. He was on the
executive board from 1984-2001. Pete was chosen Elk of the
year from Lodge #813 in May, 2008. Pete was a member of the
Elks for 20 plus years serving as Exalted Ruler and
Treasurer. He also belonged to the Moose Lodge, was a big
fan of Tony Stewart NASCAR Racing.
Pete enjoyed hunting and fishing. Pete was a great
fan/driver of Stock Cars and established the first
Demolition Derby in Glenville, Minnesota. Pete enjoyed
playing poker with his card club friends and being a member
of the Albert Lea Clown Troop. Pete's family was especially
important to him.
Pete is survived by his children, Valerie (Hans) Planchard
of Kemah, Texas, Julie (Steve) Dahlby of River Falls,
Wisconsin, Bruce Oakland of Austin, Minnesota, Joyce Johnson
and Butch Gardner of New Meadows, Idaho and Alan Reinken of
Copan, Oklahoma; mother, Carol Oakland of Northwood, Iowa;
grandchildren, Shannon (Heather) Bauer, Stephanie (Tom)
Johnson, Stacy Adams, Nikki (Wade) Steven, Derek Oakland and
Destiny Oakland; great-grandchildren, Justice, Hailey,
Alexis, Katelyn, Damien, Hannah, Ella, Liley and Jaxon;
brothers and sisters, Darlene (Broyce) Larson of Waseca,
Minnesota, Dale (Barb) Oakland of Brownsdale, Minnesota,
David (Diane) Oakland of Albert Lea, Minnesota, Raymond
(Sandi) Oakland of Battle Creek, Michigan, Barbara (Buzz)
Larson of Waseca, Minnesota, Paul (Doris) Oakland of
Fairmont, Minnesota, Dennis (Diana) Oakland of Albert Lea,
Minnesota, Fran (John) Dahlum of Myrtle, Minnesota, LaVon
(Greg) Bale of Battle Creek, Michigan and Vicki (Ronnie)
Stricker of Northwood, Iowa; special companion, Kim Thomas
of Albert Lea, Minnesota; and many nieces and nephews.
Pete was preceded in death by his father, Lawrence Oakland
on November 8, 1990; and nephew, Darin Oakland in August
2006.

Sylverne Burtness
July 31, 2008
Sylverne Burtness, 98, of Northwood, died on Wednesday, July
23, 2008, at the Throne Crest Retirement Center in Albert
Lea, Minnesota.
Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m., on Saturday, July
26, at the First Shell Rock Lutheran Church in Northwood,
with Reverend Karl Hermanson officiating. Burial was in the
Stateline Cemetery, rural Northwood. Visitation was held one
hour prior to the service time on Saturday at the church.
The Conner Colonial Chapel, Northwood, is in charge of the
arrangements.
Sylverne Burtness, was born on February 16, 1910 in
Monterey, Minnesota, now called Trimont, Minnesota, the
daughter of Matt and Mattie (Wilson) Johnson. She was
baptized in infancy and reaffirmed the faith of her baptism
through confirmation at the Grace Lutheran Church in
Hanlontown, Iowa. She moved several times with her parents,
when they settled near Hanlontown, where she attended rural
country grade school and graduated from the Hanlontown High
School. She was united in marriage to Olger Burtness on
October 25, 1926, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua,
Iowa. He preceded her in death. After their marriage
together they farmed most of their lives in the rural
Gordonsville, Minnesota area.
During her early years she worked several years in the drug
store and grocery store in Hanlontown. Sylverne worked for
20 years as a nurse's aide, four and one half years in
Albert Lea, Minnesota and 15 ½ years at the Lutheran
Retirement Home in Northwood. Sylverne loved this work and
would often be found at a home where care was needed. After
her husband died whom she cared for two and one half years
when he was bedridden, she sold her home in Gordonsville and
moved to Northwood, to be closer to her church and other
conveniences.
She enjoyed handwork, reading, writing letters, crossword
puzzles, and cooking. She loved her small garden and
flowers, but most of all she loved her family and friends
around her. She was a member of the First Shell Rock
Lutheran Church and the ladies aid in Northwood.
Left to cherish her memory are two daughters, Beverly Larsen
of Whiting, New Jersey and Marilyn Becker of Northwood; six
grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and six
great-great-grandchildren; and many other extended family
members and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; infant
son; infant granddaughter; two sisters and two brothers; and
two son-in-laws.

Arthur Benjamin
Carberry
July 31, 2008
Arthur Benjamin Carberry, 90, of Mason City, died on
Saturday, July 26, 2008, at the Muse-Norris Hospice
Inpatient Unit, in Mason City.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, July 29, at 10:30
a.m., at the Wesley United Methodist Church, Mason City,
with Pastor Brent Hamilton officiating. Military honors were
conducted by members of the Mason City Veterans Memorial
Association. Cremation took place following the service.
Visitation was held on Monday, July 28, from 4- 6:00 p.m.,
at the Hogan Bremer Moore Colonial Chapel, Mason City.
Memorials may be directed to the Hospice of North Iowa.
Arthur was born on January 20, 1918, the son of Abner B. and
Edna L. (Fremont) Carberry in Meltonville, Iowa. He attended
the Carpenter and Meltonville Schools and then enlisted in
the United States Army in 1943. Arthur was a transport
driver for North Iowa Oil where he retired in 1988. He
married Vivian (Patterson) on February 25, 1945 in
Meltonville and to this union two children were born.
In his spare time Arthur enjoyed dancing, fishing, having
coffee at Hardees and playing cards with friends. He was
also a member and the head usher at the Wesley United
Methodist Church in Mason City.
Arthur is survived by his wife, Vivian of Mason City; his
daughter, Cheryl (Shawn) Dorsey of Shreveport, Louisiana;
his daughter-in-law, Bambi Carberry of Mason City; his
grandchildren, Jenny Carberry, Jessica (Jeremey) Lowe, Jason
Carberry, Katie Carberry, Erin Dorsey and Meaghan Dorsey;
his great-grandchildren, Matthew and Grace Carberry; his
sisters, Edith Coy of Shellsburg, Esther Carberry of Hyden,
Kentucky, Howard (Sharon) Carberry of Rosebud, Texas, Wayne
Carberry of Prescott Valley, Arizona, Paul Carberry of
Prescott Valley, Arizona and Merle (Marilyn) Carberry of
Lake Villa, Illinois; and his special friends at the coffee
club in Mason City.
He was preceded in death by his son, Dennis; and his
siblings, Raymond Carberry, Marion Carberry, Lois Carberry
and Cecil Carberry.

Edith Theone
Jacobson
August 7, 2008
Edith Theone Jacobson, 85 of Northwood, died on Monday, July
28, 2008, at home.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m., on Thursday, July
31, at the First Lutheran Church in Northwood, with Rev.
David Hart officiating. Interment was in the East Rake
Cemetery, Rake, on Thursday, at 2:00 p.m.
Edith Theone Jacobson, was born on September 24, 1922 on a
farm near Rake, Iowa, to John T. and Alma (Matson) Johnson.
She graduated from the Mankato State College in 1967 with a
BS degree Cum Laude. She taught in rural Minnesota for four
years and twenty years at the Northwood-Kensett Schools.
Edith was a member of the First Lutheran Church and Deborah
circle, NEA, IPERS and VFW Auxiliary. She married Maynard
Jacobson on September 4, 1945. He died in 2000.
Edith was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters.
She is survived by three children, Merle (Kay Reese)
Jacobson of Hilltop, Minnesota, Laura (Vince) Mangan of
Spring Valley, Minnesota and Bruce (Dawn) Jacobson of Albert
Lea, Minnesota; two sisters, Gladys Jonson of Ferndale,
Washington and JoAnn (Dale) Golbuff of Albert Lea,
Minnesota; seven grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be given to the American Heart
Association or to the American Cancer Society. The Schroeder
and Sites Funeral Home, Northwood, was in charge of the
arrangements.

Clayton Eugene
Engen
August 7, 2008
Clayton Eugene Engen, age 78, of Glenville, died on
Wednesday, July 30, 2008, at the St. John's Lutheran Home in
Albert Lea.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m., on Monday, August
4, at the First Lutheran Church in Glenville. Rev. Krista
Stokke officiated. Interment was in the Greenwood Cemetery,
with Military Honors accorded by the Freeborn County
Veterans organizations. Visitation was from 5-7:00 p.m., on
Sunday, August 3, at the Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home and
one hour prior to the services at the church.
Clayton was born on July 23, 1930, to Norman and Eva Doris (Kleven)
Engen in Glenville, Minnesota. Clayton was a lifelong
resident of the Glenville area. He graduated from the Albert
Lea High School in 1947. Clayton served in the United States
Air Force during the Korean conflict. After his discharge in
1952, he returned to Glenville.
Clayton was united in marriage to Marie Payne on April 26,
1953, at the First Lutheran Church in Glenville. The couple
resided on their farm east of Glenville where Clayton farmed
and worked as a hog buyer for Wilson and Co. Clayton also
served as co-chair of the Minnesota Spring Barrow Show held
in Albert Lea. In later years, Clayton also worked as a
realtor for Century 21.
He was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Glenville.
Clayton served on the church council, and was also a Deacon,
Sunday School Teacher, Lector, and Bethel Bible Class
Teacher. Clayton also served for several years on the
Glenville District 245 School Board.
Survivors include his wife, Marie; children, David Engen of
Burnsville, Minnesota, Paula and husband, Mark Olson of
Gordonsville, Minnesota and Richard and wife, Shawna Engen
of Pocatello, Idaho; grandchildren, Bjorn Olson, Stephani
Olson, of Gordonsville, Christopher and wife, Melissa Olson
of Albert Lea, Karin Engen and Erich Engen, both of
Burnsville; great-granddaughter, Jazmine Hensche; and many
nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Clayton was preceded in death by his parents, Norman and Eva
Doris Engen.
Memorial are preferred to the Minnesota Parkinson's
Association and the First Lutheran Church of Glenville.

Mildred Hendrickson

Mildred Bertha Augusta Hendrickson, 92, of Northwood, died
on Thursday, July 31, 2008, at the Lutheran Retirement Home
in Northwood.
Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m., on Monday, August
4, at the First Lutheran Church, Northwood, with Reverend
Barbara Wills and Navy Chaplin Jon Fredrickson officiating.
Burial was in the South Shell Rock Cemetery, rural
Northwood. Visitation was held from 3-7:00 p.m., on Sunday,
August 3, at the Conner Colonial Chapel, Northwood.
Visitation was also held one hour prior to the service time
on Monday at the church. The family of Mildred has suggested
that those wishing to express their sympathy through a
memorial contribution may wish to direct the memorials to
the Lutheran Retirement Home Auxiliary, or to the First
Lutheran Church in her memory.
Mildred Bertha Augusta Hendrickson, was born on December 26,
1915 in Grove Township, rural Northwood, the daughter of
John and Martha (Luth) Fredrickson. She was baptized on
January 30, 1916, at the Evangelical Lutheran Zion Church in
Northwood, by the Reverend J.O. Staehling, and reaffirmed
the faith of her baptism through confirmation in the
Northwood Lutheran Church on May 12, 1929, by Reverend J.W.
Ylvisaker. Mildred attended elementary school in the Grove
Township #4, rural Northwood, and graduated from the
Northwood High School on May 25, 1933.
She was united in marriage to Sophus Hendrickson on December
31, 1933, in the Northwood Lutheran Church, by Reverend J.W.
Ylvisaker. Sophus preceded her in death on February 9, 1975.
After their marriage together they farmed in the Northwood
area and were active in 4-H. Sophus and Mildred moved to
Northwood where they raised their three children. Mildred
began her working career in the cafeteria for the Northwood
High School and was known by the school children as the
lunch ticket lady, and every child in the school belonged to
Mildred. Mildred worked for the Northwood Community Schools
for 20 plus years. Mildred also was the obituary
correspondent for the Conner Colonial Chapel in Northwood,
for the Globe Gazette, Northwood Anchor, and the Albert Lea
Tribune newspapers. During elections, Mildred sent election
press releases for the Associated Press.
She enjoyed sewing, arts and crafts, baking, canning,
quilting, and making rugs. Mildred was a member and very
active in the First Lutheran Church in Northwood and was
secretary and treasurer for the Abigail Circle for 25 years,
church library committee, and taught Sunday School at the
church. She was also a 63-year member of the American Legion
Ladies Auxiliary, and was an active Cub Scout Den Mother.
Mildred also loved to exhibit her baked goods at the Worth
County Fair.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Carol (Bob)
Crane of Johnston, Iowa, Dennis (Sandra) Hendrickson of
Cedar Falls and Chuck (Janis) Hendrickson of Lake Mills; a
special nephew, Jon (Patty) Fredrickson of Jacksonville,
Florida; five grandchildren, Diane (Gary) Crane-Bridgewater
of Johnston, Rob (Connie) Crane of Colorado Springs,
Colorado, Ann (Chris) Hendrickson-Gustafson of Eureka,
Illinois, Trevor (Abby) Hendrickson of Cedar Falls and
Carrie (Greg) Hendrickson-Buelow of Cedar Rapids; ten
great-grandchildren; two sisters, Helen Mowers of San
Antonio, Texas and Dolores (Al) Mandt of Urbandale; a
sister-in-law, Jerri Fredrickson of Goodyear, Arizona; as
well as many extended family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Sophus; a
great-grandson, Charles Carlson; two brothers, Arnold and
Donald Fredrickson; a sister, Alice Watts; sister-in-law,
Inez Fredrickson; and two brothers-in-law, Wendell Watts and
Earl Mowers.
