Inez E. Heimdal
September 12, 2012
Inez E. Heimdal, age 90, of Lake Mills, died on Sunday,
September 2, 2012, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit
in Mason City, Iowa.
Funeral services were held
at 11:00 a.m., on Friday, September 7, at the Winnebago
Lutheran Church in rural Lake Mills, with Pastor Bill Peters
officiating. Burial was in the Winnebago Lutheran Cemetery.
Visitation was held from 5-8:00 p.m., on Thursday, September
6, at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home in Forest City and
continued an hour prior to the services at the church. The
family encourages memorials be directed to the Winnebago
Lutheran Church Landscaping Fund.
Inez was born on November
24, 1921, to Selmer and Grace Johnson in Geneva, Minnesota.
She grew up in Forest City and graduated from the Forest
City High School in 1940. After graduation, she worked in
several homes in Winnebago County as a homemaker, where she
met Alfred Heimdal. Inez and Alfred were united by marriage
on August 16, 1941. The couple proceeded to spend most of
their married lives in Winnebago County farming and raising
eight children. In 1991, the couple relocated to Forest
City, where they spent their last years together until
Alfred passed away in 1994. Inez continued to spend the next
decade in Forest City, spending time with family and friends
before residing her remaining five years at the Lake Mills
Care Center.
Inez was a very talented
and independent person. Among many of her talents were
playing violin at a young age, loving to sew and creating
her own patterns, her love of gardening, many hours of
bargain shopping and gift of gab being among the most
memorable talent of all. She spent much of her life working
at several jobs including Deluxe, County Home and devoted
the last 30 years at Fleetguard, retiring at the age of 67.
She also utilized her time being a 4-H Leader for Mt. Valley
Township and an active member of the Winnebago Lutheran
Church, participating in several church groups.
She is survived by her
children, Sonja Petersen of Lake Mills, Dennis and Marilyn
Heimdal of Farmersburg, Noel and Pam Heimdal of Rockwell
City, Ilene and Bill Zieser of Leland, Arlyn and Linda
Heimdal of Cheney, Washington, Mylan and Ana Heimdal of
Houston, Texas and daughter-in-law, Marie Heimdal of Canton,
South Dakota; sisters, Lana Dewey of Minneapolis, Minnesota
and Idelle Peterson of Boudon, Missouri; 14 grandchildren;
22 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren; and
many family and friends.
She was preceded in death
by her parents; daughter, Leanne Grace; husband, Alfred
Heimdal; son-in-law, Ralph Petersen; brother, Quintin
Johnson; son, Richard Heimdal and grandson, Troy Warner.

Martin Kral
September 12, 2012
Martin Kral, age 91, of Forest City, died on Monday,
September 3, 2012, at the Good Samaritan Care Center in
Forest City.
Funeral services were held
at 10:30 a.m., on Thursday, September 6, at the St. James
Catholic Church in Forest City, with Fr. Dennis Miller
officiating. Burial was in the St. John's Cemetery in
Duncan. Visitation was held from 4-7:00 p.m., on Wednesday,
September 5, at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home, Forest City
and continued one hour prior to the services at the church.
Martin was born in Belmond
on August 12, 1921, to Joseph and Marie (Jedlicka) Kral. He
attended school in Miller. Martin enlisted in the Army on
June 15, 1942 and was sent overseas in December 1942. He was
a member of Company F, 66th Armored Regiment, Hell on
Wheels. He was a tank driver, gunner and Tank Commander. He
saw action in Africa, England, Sicily, France, Holland,
Belgium and the "Battle of the Bulge", attaining the rank of
Staff Sergeant. He served two years and nine months. He was
awarded a Silver Star, Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, 7
Battle Stars and the Bronze Arrow Head.
Upon completion in the
Army, he returned to Hayfield and farmed. On November 21,
1945, he married Adeline Nedved at the St. Wenceslaus
Catholic Church in Duncan. Shortly after, they moved to
Thompson where they farmed until 1963. They purchased an
acreage east of Thompson. Martin worked at the Oliver
Implement and then went to work at Farmer's Co-Op Elevator
in Thompson, for 20 years. After retirement, they sold the
acreage and moved to Thompson. Martin still worked part-time
at the elevator during the busy season.
During the winter, Martin
enjoyed putting puzzles together and listening to "old time"
music. They enjoyed going to Polka Festivals in Minnesota,
Wisconsin and Nebraska. He enjoyed being with his grandkids
and at Christmas time always decorated their house and yard
with Christmas lights. Martin was a member of the Thompson
VFW, Knights of Columbus of Forest City, ZCB3 Lodge at Mason
City and the Young at Heart Club at Thompson.
Martin and Adeline moved
to Forest City in 2012. Martin entered the Good Samaritan
Nursing Home in February, 2011.
Martin is survived by his
wife of 66 years, Adeline; one son, Gary and his wife, Ruth
of Eagan, Minnesota; two grandchildren, Megan (David) Young
of Lino Lakes, Minnesota and Trent (Alison) Kral of
Farmington, Minnesota; and three great-grandchildren,
Matthew and Olivia Kral and Leah Young.

Larry Gene Behrends
September 12, 2012
Larry Gene Behrends, 61, of Forest City, died on Tuesday,
September 4, 2012.
Funeral services were held
on Saturday, September 8, at 10:00 a.m., at the First
Baptist Church, in Forest City, with Pastor Doug Snyder
officiating. Visitation was on Friday, from 5–7:00 p.m., at
the Church. The Boman Funeral Home, Webster City, was in
charge of the arrangements.
Larry was adopted to
Theodore Donald Behrends and Wanetta Bell Behrends on
September 11, 1953 in Belmond. After attending the Belmond
Community High School, Larry enlisted in the United States
Marine Corps. where he proudly served for four years. Larry
then worked for the Department of Veterans Affairs. He lived
in many places during his career, including Salt Lake City,
Utah, Sheridan, Wyoming, Loma Linda, California, Las Animas,
Colorado, Detroit, Michigan, Canoga Park, California,
Belmont Shore, California, Baltimore, Maryland. He married
his soul mate, Debra Kay Behrends on October 22, 1988 in
Nashua at the Little Brown Church. After 24 years of
service, Larry retired at the age of 45 in 1997, moving back
home with his family to Forest City, Iowa.
Larry enjoyed reading
books about the American Revolution and the development of
the American West. He also enjoyed creating genealogy
profiles for families, caring for his horses, creating
websites and playing the guitar. Larry's passions were being
home with his family, working on his lakeside home and
fishing from his dock and boat.
Larry is survived by his
wife, Debra Kay Behrends; his beloved children, Michael
Gregory Behrends and Kristin Taylor Behrends from Forest
City, Gregory Lawrance (Denise Kay) Behrends from Hastings,
Nebraska and Brandi Kristina Behrends from Fort Worth,
Texas; brother, Leon Dale (Reha Francis) Behrends; and
sisters, LaRay Lee (Mike) Keiser and Lorraine Lee (Mike)
Nelson of Brooklyn.

death by his father, Theodore Donald Behrends; mother,
Wanetta Bell Behrends; and his best friend and dog, Cami. |
Virgil Lovik
September 12, 2012
Virgil O. Lovik, 84, of Fertile, died on Wednesday,
September 5, 2012, at the Muse Norris Hospice of North Iowa
in Mason City.
Funeral services were held
at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, September 8, at the Fertile
Lutheran Church in Fertile, with Lay Pastor David Halverson
officiating. Burial was in the Grant Center Cemetery in
rural Clear Lake. Visitation was held from 4-7:00 p.m., on
Friday, September 7, at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home,
Forest City and continued one hour prior to the services at
the church.
Virgil O. Lovik, the son
of Swen and Hilma (Strand) Lovik was born on September 9,
1927. He attended school at the Grant #6 School. He enlisted
in the U.S. Army in 1945, the following year, he received a
medical discharge. He married Romane Humphrey of Fertile on
January 11, 1948. They farmed in the Ventura and Joice areas
and moved into Fertile in 1987.
Virgil is survived by his
wife, Romane of Fertile; three children, Mary (Craig)
Anderson of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Mark (Virginia) Lovik
of Joice and Marie (Michael) Oleson of Forest City;
grandchildren, Ben (Erin) Anderson, Brooke (Adam) Ryan,
Britney (Eric) Olson, Nathan (Kim) Lovik, Laura (Paul)
Beatty, Marissa (Dallas) Koeneke, Molly Oleson and her
fiancé, Justin Uhlenhopp; great-grandchildren, Dylan, Luke,
Roman Knox, Ashton, Benson, Hailey, Garrett, Gage and
Hailynn; sister and brother-in-law, Geraldine (Leonard)
Washburn; and several nieces and nephews; and his special
combining buddy, Jeremy Kostelecky.
He was preceded in death
by his parents; sisters, Irene and Edythe; brothers, Harry,
Lloyd, Norman, Orville, Roy and Duane; and a stillborn
granddaughter, Ann Anderson.

Carroll Sougstad
October 3, 2012
Carroll N. Sougstad, 90, of Forest City, died on Friday,
September 28, 2012, at the Good Samaritan Care Center in
Forest City.
Funeral services were held
at 10:30 a.m., on Tuesday, October 2, at the Immanuel
Lutheran Church in Forest City, with Pastor Rod Hopp
officiating. Burial was in the Harrison Township Cemetery,
Swea City, at 2:30 p.m., on Tuesday, October 2. Visitation
was held from 4-7:00 p.m., on Monday, October 1, at the
Petersen Lund Funeral Home, Forest City and continued
one hour prior to the services at the church.
Carroll was born on
November 12, 1921, to Edward and Ora Mae (Wicks) Sougstad in
Fulton, South Dakota. He graduated from high school in
Fedora, South Dakota and from the Dakota Wesleyan University
in Mitchell, South Dakota, as well as earning his Master's
degree in Music Education from the Colorado State College of
Education in Greeley, Colorado. On June 4, 1950, he married
Arlene Willeman at the Hyde Park Methodist Church in St.
Joseph, Missouri. They had three children, Mark, Steve and
Joyce. He taught instrumental and vocal music in several
communities in South Dakota, Minnesota and Iowa. One of his
former students established a scholarship in his name for a
Lake Preston, South Dakota, high school student pursuing a
degree in music. He also worked at Winnebago Industries
until his retirement.
He was a member of Sig's
Band, the Lions Club and the Immanuel Lutheran Church for
more than 30 years. He enjoyed singing and traveling to
concerts, reunions, a variety of community events and to
support his grandchildren in their activities, for which he
earned an award from the Forest City Sports Boosters.
He is survived by son,
Mark Sougstad of Dallas, Oregon, grandchildren, Amy (Jeremy)
Wagner, Cory Sougstad and Tait (Elissa) Sougstad; son,
Steven Sougstad of Forest City, grandchildren, Randy (Sarah)
Sougstad, William Sougstad and Emma Sougstad; daughter,
Joyce (Neal) Flugum of Forest City, grandchildren, Gary
Flugum, Lyndi (Jerre) Flugum-Collins, Andrew Flugum; 5
great-grandchildren; sister, Lois Mehus of Missoula,
Montana; sisters-in-law, Joann (John) Townsend of Terre
Haute, Indiana and Venita Leiffring of Prairie Village,
Kansas; as well as many nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death
by his wife, Arlene; sisters, Merle and Jean; brothers,
Edward, Eldon and Orris; and infant grandson, Brett.
