Maxine Rose Steinberg
 

Maxine Rose Steinberg, 83, passed away on August 17, 2012, at her home in St Ansgar, Iowa.

Funeral Services were held at 10:30 am Saturday August 25th at Immanuel Lutheran Church in St Ansgar with Rev. Dr. Bryon Northwick officiating. Burial was at St John’s Cemetery in Rock Township.

Maxine was born on February 7th, 1929 near Carpenter Iowa. She was the first born child of William and Dorothy (Kirchgatter) Greiner. She grew up on various farms in both Mitchell and Worth County. She eventually graduated from Grafton High School in 1947.

After graduating she worked in Wisconsin, in 1952 she married Sanford Nelson. He was in the service stationed on the east and west coast, he died in 1956. She then moved back to the Mitchell County area and worked as a telephone operator and housekeeper where she met her husband Edwin Steinberg. They married on June 7th, 1958. To this union one son David was born. They made their home in rural St Ansgar farming until their retirement in 1983, they moved to St Ansgar.

They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2008. Edwin passed away in 2009. Maxine thoroughly enjoyed her family, spending time with them and attending their events. She was also blessed with her loving church family at Immanuel Lutheran, attending quilting and bible class. She always looked forward to playing cards both with her Thursday card club and with her family.

Surviving family members include: David (Elaine) Steinberg, St Ansgar, Stepson Frederick (Karen) Steinberg, St Ansgar, stepdaughter Carol (Lellen) Jones, of Covington, Georgia; grandchildren: Jessica (Wade) Machin, Jeremiah, Joshua, Jackson Steinberg. Step grandchildren: Brian (Tori) Steinberg, Bruce (Meagan) Steinberg, Steven (Toby) Jones, Jason (Rosemary) Jones, Step greatgrandchildren: Gregory, Kayley, Riley, Chistopher, Haley, Madison, Alianna, Noah; one brother Ellsworth Greiner of Mason City, one sister Vanita Wilson of Mason City, many nieces and nephews.

She was preceeded in death by her first husband, Sanford, and second husband, Edwin.


Harvey N. Fischer

December 9th, 1938- August 19th, 2012

Harvey was born in Austin, MN to Norman & Pauline Fischer. He graduated from Carpenter High School in Carpenter, IA.

In January of 1956 Harvey joined the Navy and was on the USS Hancock where he served as a Machinist Mate and received an Honorable Discharge in January of 1962.

Harvey married Janice Johnson from Austin, Minnesota in June of 1961; they had a son Harvey, Jr. and were later divorced. Harvey resided many years in Mason City, IA.

He owned and operated Fischer Truck Stop on the old Hwy 65 north of Mason City. He also worked in Charles City at the Oliver plant, Risto Manufacturing & Standard Glass both in Mason City. Later he worked for IMT (Iowa Mold & Tooling) in Garner, IA.

December 28th, 1983 Harvey married Mavis Thompson of Mason City, IA. About this time he took a sales position with IMT and covered the Northwest Territory which included Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana.

In July of 1984 Harvey & Mavis moved to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho where they were happily residing at the time of his death. After working for IMT he worked for Stellar Industries out of Spokane, WA still in sales. In the later years he drove school bus for the Coeur d’Alene School District and was really loved by the kids.

Harvey loved working with his hands and he became a part-time Handyman. He loved to fish, camp with the motorhome, do wood-working and mess with the old cars. His health had been failing the past several years, but he still enjoyed doing woodworking and tinkering with the cars and such.

The weekend of his death he was at the Goodguys Great Northwest Street Rod Nationals in Spokane, WA checking out the cars, working in Mavis’s craft booth, selling her purses and showing the ladies the ”proper way” to carry a purse.

Harvey leaves behind the love of his life, his wife Mavis. His son Harvey, Jr. with friend Barb of Owatonna, MN; daughter Melinda (husband) Don Zeimet of Algona, IA; Grandson Josh (wife Amanda) Fischer, Great Granddaughter Sophia Fischer all of Mason City, IA; sister, Maria (husband Jim) Downs of Live Oak, CA; In-Law’s: Vickie and Dave Bruggeman of Toeterville, IA; Geraldine Thompson of Marion, IA; and David Dean Thompson in Toeterville, IA; Neices: Tammy (husband Brandon) Kofoot of Kasson, MN, Stacy (husband Chad) Huhn of Evanston, IL; nephews: Connor & Lucus Burr of Cedar Rapids, IA; Great Nieces and Nephews: Greta Huhn, Aubree Kofoot, Alec Huhn & Grayson Kofoot.

Harvey will be missed by many friends, cousins, street rodders and crafters.

He was preceded in death by his father Norman Fischer, his mother Pauline Mezzanzanica, and Grandson Addison Fischer.

Harvey was involved with the North Idaho Medical Reserve Corps and a member of the North Kootenai Good Sam Chapter.

Two Celebrations of Harvey’s Life will be held, one in Coeur d’Alene, ID on September 22nd, 2 – 4pm at the Dalton Gardens Park and then on October 6th in Toeterville, IA at St. Peter Lutheran Cemetery where he will be laid to rest; with a lunch following at the Church in Toeterville.

Arrangements are pending with the assistance of English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.

John W.Thurnau

John W. Thurnau Jr. passed away August 25th quietly and peacefully at home surrounded by his family at the age of 82.

Funeral service was held Visitation Church, Stacyville, on Tuesday, August 28 at 10:30 a.m. interment followed at the St. Ansgar Cemetery with Military honors by American Legion. John (Jr) was born on August 24, 1930 in Mitchell County to John and Christina (Adams) Thurnau. He grew up and attended school in Brownville, IA.

He enlisted in the Navy and served during the Korean Conflict. He married the love of his life, Olga Duren on May 16, 1951. To their union 8 children were born. He worked for Albert and Frank Kerckhove farming until retiring to St. Ansgar in 1999. John (Jr) loved country western music and played accordion and harmonica. He sang and played in a band for many many years. He loved dancing, playing cards with friends and family, and watching the Minnesota Twins.

He is survived by his wife Olga, three sons, Richard (Judy) St. Ansgar, Ronnie (Denise) Scarville, Scott (Julie) Zumbrota, MN, four daughters, Bonnie Morse Osage, Pam (Curt) Lonergan Rose Creek, MN, Sherry (John) Hemann Stacyville, Mary (Jay) Adams Stacyville. 20 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren.

Rodney Wayne Hutchinson

Rodney Wayne Hutchinson, age 65 of St. Ansgar, IA, died Sunday September 9, 2012 at Hutchinson Campground, Decorah, Iowa.

He was born June 25, 1947 in Chariton, IA to Lee and Marjorie (Simpson) Hutchinson. He graduated from Decorah High School in 1966. Following graduation, he served in the Vietnam War until 1968, and then served in the National Guard.

On September 6, 1969 Rodney married Patricia Foltz in Decorah. The couple had 4 children. Rodney lived in Iowa and Arkansas before moving to Minnesota. He lived in Austin and Lyle before moving to St. Ansgar. He first worked in masonry, and then was a laborer at Hormel Foods in Austin.

He also worked on a hog farm, and was most recently employed as a school bus driver. A member of Faith Evangelical Free Church in Austin, Rodney served as an usher. For more than twenty years, he was a member of the Mower County Mounted Sheriff’s Posse. He took part in many parades and county fairs. He enjoyed watching his grandkids in sports. He also enjoyed fishing, and trail riding and camping with horses.

Survivors include his wife Patricia of St. Ansgar, IA; his children Trish (Ron) Lensing of Wagner, SD, Lori Hutchinson of Rochester, MN, Nick Hutchinson of Mason City, IA, Kevin (Jennie) Hutchinson of St. Ansgar; 9 grandchildren, Brittany Hutchinson, Trevor, Morgan, Dawson, Sarah, and Shana Lensing, Riley Hutchinson, Hayli and Jaden Hutchinson; 3 brothers, Tim (Dixie) Hutchinson of Decorah, IA, Steve (Rhoda) Hutchinson of Austin, Jeff (Shannon) Hutchinson of Stafford, TX; 1 sister Sheryl (J.T.) Lute of Great Falls, MT; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Lee and Marjorie Hutchinson, his brother Rodger, and a stillborn brother, Titus.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday September 13, 2012 at Faith Evangelical Free Church in Austin with Reverend Hilmore Williams officiating.

Friends may call at Worlein Funeral Home in Austin from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Wednesday, and one hour prior to the service at the church. Military rites by the Lyle American Legion Post 105. Interment will take place at a later date. The Mower County Mounted Sheriff’s Posse will serve as honorary guard. Condolences may be expressed to the family online at www.worlein.com.


Edna Marie Pike Knutson

Edna passed away August 21, 2012 at the age of 92 years in Rialto, CA.

She was born on June 18, 1920 in Deer Creek Township, Mitchell Co., Iowa. Edna was married to Harold J. Knutson on June 24, 1943 at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her husband Harold, her son Gary, grandchildren Justin Bunker, and Maria Kaminski and great great grandson Skylar Kaminski.

She is survived by one sister, Chrystal Braun of Grafton, Iowa; sons Richard Knutson of Berryton, KS, Dennis Knutson of Sykesville, MD, and daughters Judith Bunker of Helendale, CA, and Connie Kaminski of Rialto, CA, 17 grandchildren, and many great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren.

Viewing was Thursday, August 30, 2012 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. and services began at 11:30 a.m. at Akes Family Funeral Home, 9695 Magnolia Ave., Riverside, CA. Internment was held at 1:00 p.m. at Riverside National Cemetery, 22495 Van Buren Boulevard, Riverside, CA.


Shirley O. Markham

Shirley O. (Duenow) Markham, age 95, of Osage, died Saturday, September 22, 2012, at Faith Lutheran Home in Osage.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, October 1, 2012, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage with Msgr. John Hemann, officiating. Burial will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 p.m., Sunday, at the Champion- Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage, with a rosary at 4:30 p.m. and a scripture service at 6:30 p.m.

Shirley was born May 30, 1917, at home near St. Ansgar, the daughter of Carl A. and Edna (Koster) Duenow. She graduated from St. Ansgar High School. Shirley was united in marriage to Glenn Markham on March 31, 1937. They farmed in Burr Oak Township until 1965, when they moved to Osage. They owned and operated Plaza Café for 17 years until retirement.

Shirley was a member of Sacred Heart Guild and Bible group and was a long time member of MI Club. She enjoyed flower gardening and baking.

Shirley is survived by three daughters, Janice (John) Dempsey of Osage, Joan Blake of St. Ansgar, Pat (Roger) Karau of Elko, MN; four sons, Ron (Kris) Markham of New Hampton, Rick (Marge) Markham of Osage, Bob (Kate) Markham of Lakeside, CA, Keith (Jessi) Markham of Gig Harbor, WA; 23 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great-grandchildren, 3 brothers, Kenneth Duenow of St. Ansgar, Merlyn Duenow of Montgomery, MN, John (Sally) Duenow of Liberty Lake, WA, and a sister, Margaret (Larry) Runtch of Rochester, MN.

She was preceded in death by her husband Glenn, a son, Bill, a daughter, Barbara, a granddaughter, Carol Shannon, brothers, Wayne and Carl and a sister, Eleanor.
