Shirley J. Kittleson funeral
Funeral services were held on Saturday, September 24, 2011 at 10:30 AM at First Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar, IA with Rev. Ed Bard officiating. Burial was in First Lutheran Cemetery, St. Ansgar. Shirley Jean Clausen Kittleson was born January 5, 1938 to Elmer and Marie Clausen near Stacyville IA. She was baptized and confirmed into the Christian faith at Union Presbyterian Church, Stacyville IA. She attended Union School and graduated from St. Ansgar High School. On September 16, 1956 Shirley was united in marriage to Norman Kittleson in Toterville IA. They made their home near Carpenter IA farming for 16 years before moving to St. Ansgar in 1982. She enjoyed working the fields alongside Norm and loved caring for their horses. Shirley held bookkeeping and accounting positions for several employers including Carpenter Elevator, Gross & McPhail until taking a position as Office Manager with St Ansgar Grain and Feed (currently Grain Millers) in St. Ansgar IA. She held that position for 34 years until her retirement in 2006. She was described by the Chairman of the Board, Rolf Abdon in the following way: “Shirley was a part of the foundation of Grain Millers and she set the tone from the beginning in the company. Her human great qualities have been of immense importance to our success.” Shirley spent a great deal of her time traveling and following the many activities her sons and grandchildren participated in. She and Norm were inducted into the STA Booster Club “Hall of Fame” in 2004 for their many years of dedication to STA athletics. Shirley was active in the First Lutheran Church as a Sunday school teacher, Church Choir and Hand Bell Choir member. She enjoyed a large garden including her many flower beds. Family was her priority, especially her grandchildren who were her pride and joy. Shirley loved music including piano, accordion, guitar and spent many hours teaching her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Marie Clausen and sister Myrna Heskett. Survivors include her husband, Norm of St. Ansgar; three sons, Brian (Sheila) of Janesville IA, Barry (Pam) of St. Ansgar IA, and Randy (Pam) of Verona WI; seven grandchildren, Matt, Megan, Trevor, Kelsey, Stephanie, Kaden and Kyrah Kittleson; one sister Ann (Dean) Boynton of Anoka MN, two brothers, Ronald (Audrey) Clausen of Rochester MN, Rodney Clausen of Red Wing MN and one brother-in-law, Eugene Heskett of Madera CA. Rugene “Bob” Gleason, age 86 of rural Lyle, Minnesota died peacefully at
his home Wednesday morning, October 5, 2011. He was born March 27, 1925 in Otranto Township, Mitchell County, Iowa to Roy Francis and Amy (Read) Gleason and baptized and confirmed in the Mona Lutheran Church, Mona, Iowa. When Bob was five years old, his family moved to a farm east of Lyle, Minnesota. He attended Pinehurst Country School and graduated from Lyle High School in 1942. Bob’s father passed away in 1940, and at that time, Bob took over the farming operation while finishing high school. In his earlier years he also worked at Botsford Lumber Yard in Lyle, Toeterville Elevator in Iowa and custom farmed for several neighbors and friends. Robert married Violet Rogstad on October 22, 1949 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Austin. From this union, three children, Steven, Sandra and Susan, were born. A good steward of the soil, he wanted to leave the land the best he could for the next generation. He loved farming, enjoyed raising beef cattle and participated at the Midwest Steer show in Austin where he showed some of his cattle and won several awards, including the Grand Champion twice. He met many friends through the cattle business and farmed in the Lyle vicinity until his retirement. Robert was very active in the community, serving on several boards including Toeterville Elevator, Farm Service Co-op, Nevada Township, Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Lyle, Lyle Public School, Pleasant Hill Cemetery and the Freeborn/ Mower REA Advisory board. Robert’s hobbies were traveling, playing cards, going to sale barns to buy livestock and visiting with family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Violet of rural Lyle; son Steven (Cynthia) of Austin; daughter Sandra (Keith) Groth of Stewartville; five grandchildren, Philip Gleason (Emily Kennelly) of Tallahassee, Florida, Dr. Kara (Carl) Mould of Atlanta, Georgia, Marge Gleason of Miami, Florida, Michelle Groth of Chicago, Illinois, Nicholas Groth of Madison, Wisconsin; great granddaughter Elise Mould of Atlanta, Georgia; two step grandsons, Dominic Ciola of Minneapolis and Louis (Nicole) Ciola of St. Paul; sister- in-law Virginia Gleason of Northfield; nieces, nephews and other relatives. Robert was preceded in death by his parents Roy and Amy Gleason; daughter Susan; brothers Roy Gleason and Charles “Read” Gleason; sister Harriet Gleason; daughter-in-law Janel (Bendtsen) Gleason; sister-in-law Phyllis Gleason. His family wishes to thank friends, family and the Mayo Clinic Health System Austin Hospice for their prayers and help during the past few months. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, October 8, 2011 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Lyle with Pastor Barbara Finley- Shea officiating. Friends may call from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., Friday at Worlein Funeral Home in Austin or one hour before the service at the church. Interment is at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Mona, Iowa. Ansgar, IA—Clifford George Powers, 74, of St. Ansgar, died Sunday,
October 23, 2011 at the Good Samaritan Society Center in St. Ansgar. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, October 27, 2011 at Visitation Catholic Church, Stacyville, IA with Father Jack McClure CPPS, officiating. Burial will be in St. Ansgar Cemetery. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 5:00-7:00 PM at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, 207 South School Street, St. Ansgar. Clifford George Powers, son of George and Helena (Boehmer) Powers, was born January 8, 1937 at Elma, IA. He attended Osage Schools and graduated from Osage High School in 1956. He was united in marriage to Suzanne Ziegler on November 28, 1959 at the St. Ansgar Catholic Church. Following high school, he served in the US Navy for four years. After returning to the Osage area, he was employed by Don’s DX and Oliver in Charles City. In 1969, he and Sue purchased the East End Grocery Store in St. Ansgar. They later purchased Thirsty’s Lounge in Rockwell. After his years as a business owner, he drove truck for International Transport, Young Trucking, and Falk Construction. Cliff enjoyed visiting with family and friends, having coffee at the Sportsman’s, and driving around town checking out the sites. He is preceded in death by his wife, Sue, his parents, two brothers, brother-in-law and father-in-law. Left to cherish his memory are his four sons, Eric and his wife Deb, Greg and his wife Annette, Troy and his wife Sandy, Mike and his wife Ann, all of St. Ansgar; thirteen grandchildren; Brian (Jenna) Powers, Bridget Powers, Brooke (Anthony) Weipert, Megan Hebrink, Andrew Powers, Darren (Amanda) Powers, Derrick (Amy) Powers, Damon (Megan) Powers, Darcy (Dustan) Knecht, Ben, Abbey, Aaron and Alyssa Powers; 10 great-grandchildren, with 2 more on the way. Cliff leaves one brother, Tom (Zoe) Powers, two sisters Donna Mae Mobley, and Sandra (Dallas) Bushbaum, mother-in-law Eleanor Tracy, sister-in-law Carol Power, brothers-in-law Denny (Veronica) Ziegler and Steve (Candi) Ziegler; numerous nieces and nephews.
