Gladys Edria Allen

St. Ansgar, IA--Gladys Edria Allen died Friday, May 27, 2011, at the Good Samaritan Center in St. Ansgar, Iowa. She was 91.

Gladys was born June 19, 1919, in rural Carpenter, Iowa, to Elmer and Eva (Thomas) Heard. Gladys graduated from Carpenter High School in 1937. On December 18, 1940, Gladys was united in marriage to Lewis Allen of London, Minnesota. Gladys and Lewis spent most of their married life at first farming and then residing in and around the Carpenter and St. Ansgar areas. They also lived in Mesa, AZ, for 3 ½ years.

Gladys was employed by the Mitchell County Memorial Hospital and later the United States Postal Service. Gladys had many interests and hobbies and volunteered many hours in service to the Goodwill Industries, the Carpenter Cemetery Association, and her church.

She was a member of the St. Ansgar United Methodist Church, where she served as long time chairman of the missions committee. She and Lewis were caretakers of the Carpenter Cemetery and were custodians at the church for many years.

Gladys was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her two brothers, Orie Heard and Kenneth Heard, and two nephews, Gary Heard and Floyd Heard. She is survived by two nieces, Bonita Heard Bakker (Meint) and Jean Heard Byl (Vern); cousins, Martha Chancellor (Denis Boerjan) and Phyllis Levendusky (Don), and by many additional cousins, great-nieces and nephews and extended family members.

 Services for Gladys Allen were conducted by Rev. Peter Chang at the St. Ansgar United Methodist Church, Tuesday, May 31, at 11:00 a.m. Burial was in the Woodbury Cemetery, rural Lyle, Minnesota.


Howard “Ben” Williams

Memorial service for Howard “Ben” Williams was held 10:30 Friday, May 27, 2011 at the First Presbyterian Church in LeRoy with the Rev. Neal Solomonson officiating. Burial took place in the Ostrander Cemetery.

Ben Williams, age 53 of LeRoy died Tuesday, May 24, 2011 at his home in LeRoy following a battle with cancer. Ben was born May 21, 1958 in Chillicothe, MO to Donald and Helen (Ackerman) Williams. He attended and graduated from Riceville High School in Riceville, IA in 1976 and was united in marriage to Karen Berg on July 17, 1998 in Las Vegas, NV.

Ben was working as a dispatcher for Krueger Trucking in Austin, MN where he had been employed since the spring of 2003.

He enjoyed camping, 4-wheeling, gardening, being outdoors, the Minnesota Twins and the GREEN BAY PACKERS; and he liked spending time with his friends and family; especially his granddaughter Izabella.

He is survived by his wife Karen of LeRoy, MN, his children; Jennifer (Matt) Blunt of St Ansgar, IA, Ashley Lindahl of Mankato, MN and Joshua Williams of LeRoy, MN, 2 grandchildren; Skylar and Izabella, Blunt of St Ansgar, IA, his parents; Don and Helen Williams of Nevada, IA, and brothers; Don (Beth) Williams of Nevada, IA, Jim (Karen) Williams of Barron, WI, Jerry (Jody) Williams of Fairbury, NE, Gary (Deb) Williams of Altoona, IA, Glen (Pam) Williams of Stacyville, IA and Richard (Tracy) Williams of St Ansgar, IA, Also Sister-in-laws Donna (Gordie) Briggs of Rochester, Eileen Voyna of Ostrander and Sheri Rowe of Riceville, IA.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, his mother and father in-law, 2 brother-in-laws 1 uncle and 1 great niece.


Eugene E. "Gene" Retterath

Grafton- Eugene E. "Gene" Retterath, 59, of Grafton, passed away Saturday (May 28, 2011) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, in Mason City.

A funeral Mass was held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday (June 1, 2011) at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 412 N. Broadway, Manly, with the Rev. Kenneth B. Gehling as Celebrant. Should friends desire, memorials may be left to the Eugene E. Retterath Memorial Fund.

Eugene Edward Retterath was born on January 7, 1952 in Osage, IA, the son of Joseph and Effie (Buringa) Retterath. He was the youngest of eleven children. He attended Visitation Catholic School in Stacyville. On October 11, 1969 Gene was united in marriage to Cindy M. Venechuk, of Grafton, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton; this union would be blessed with four children.

Throughout their marriage Gene and Cindy made their home in many different places, but had spent the last 25 years together in Grafton. Gene owned and operated Tri Spray Drywall for nearly 40 years. Gene was the definition of a family man. He cherished every moment he was able to spend with Cindy and his children. He loved attending his boys' sporting events and never missed an opportunity to cheer them on.

In more recent years he delighted in spending time with his grandchildren and especially enjoyed working on crafts with them. Gene had a heart of gold and was always willing to help his family and friends in a time of need. He enjoyed tending to his flower gardens, traveling the United States with Cindy in their R.V., watching NASCAR, playing cards, taking family fishing trips to Canada, and gambling, he was especially fond of the slot machines.

Those grateful in sharing in Gene's life are his three sons, Bill (Keri) Retterath, Mason City, Buck (Jolene) Retterath, Mason City, and Ben (Jennifer) Retterath, Sioux Falls, S.D.; his grandchildren, Carter, Megan and Zoey, Jenna, Rayna, and Lilly, and Anna; his siblings; Rosann (Clayton) Meyer, Austin, Minn., Beverly (Del) Theobald, Stacyville, Jim (Jan) Retterath, Austin, Minn., Dorothy Crooks, Rudd, Joe (Lynda) Retterath, Minneapolis, Minn., Mary (Ken) Crooks, Charles City, and Martha (Ron) Kos, Austin, Minn.; his father and mother-in-law, Jack and Clarice Venechuk, Grafton; his brother-in-law, Sam (Shelly) Venechuk, Northwood; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Preceding Gene in death are his parents, his wife of 41 years, Cindy; an infant daughter, Jennifer Jo; his sister, Phyllis Retterath; his brothers, Mike and John Retterath; and two brothers-in- law, Alden Crooks and Steve Hovet.
Howard Madsen

St. Ansgar, IA-- Howard Madsen, 91, of St. Ansgar, died Tuesday, May 31, 2011, at Good Samaritan Society Center, St. Ansgar. Funeral services was held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, June 4, 2011 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar with Rev. Dr. Byron Northwick officiating. Burial was in St. Ansgar Cemetery.

Howard L. Madsen was born May 16, 1920 in Mitchell, Iowa the son of Martin C. and Doris Elizabeth (Coon) Madsen. He attended Mitchell Consolidated School for his elementary schooling. His family moved near St. Ansgar in his freshman year of school and operated the Madsen’ Grade A Gurnsey Dairy where he helped with the family business. He graduated in May 1937.

On February 23, 1941, he married Elda Feldt and commenced to farm with his father-in-law Emil Feldt west of St. Ansgar on their family farm. They moved to the Albert Feldt farm north of Grafton where he and Elda farmed and cared for her grandfather. In 1946, they moved to their current farm west of St. Ansgar where together they farmed and raised their three children.

Howard served on many community boards including the Immanuel Church Council, Mitchell County Extension Council, St. Ansgar School Board, North Iowa Hereford Association, and Mitchell County Fairboard where he was Beef Superintendent for many years.

He was preceded in death by his wife and his parents. Howard is survived by his children Sarah (Gary) Moore of Riceville, Arthur (Judy) Madsen of Faribault, MN and Lester of St. Ansgar; one sister Marvel Kulsrud of Clarkston, WA; five grandchildren Emily (Matt) Smalley of Mankato, MN, Tim (Diana) Moore of Riceville, Kelly Moore of Charlotte, NC, Jeff Moore of Polk City, IA and Bryan Madsen of Owatonna, MN; great grandsons Jordan and Hunter Madsen of Owatonna, Andrew Moore of Riceville and Caroline Smalley of Mankato, MN; six nieces and one nephew.
Steven Alan Thompson

St. Ansgar, IA---Steven Alan Thompson, 57, of St. Ansgar, died June 21, 2011 at Mitchell County Regional Health Center, Osage, IA. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, June 24, 2011 at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, Iowa with Rev. Linda Johnson officiating. Visitation will be held Thursday, June 23, 2011 from 5:00-7:00 PM at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, 207 S. School Street, St. Ansgar, IA.

Steven Alan Thompson was born October 14, 1953 to Esther and Orville Thompson at Mercy Hospital, Mason City, Iowa. On August 29, 1975 he married Peggy Polsdofer and together they raised two sons. Steven enjoyed NASCAR, working on the house and fixing it up, gardening and adored his grandchildren. He retired from George A. Hormel June 14, 2004.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father.

Steven is survived by his wife Peggy of St. Ansgar, son Jason (Abbie) Thompson and their children Tyler and Katelyn of Ankeny, IA; son Brian (Samantha) Thompson and their sons George and Jacob of Mason City, Iowa; brothers James (Sheryl) Thompson of Manly, IA and Jeff (Sandy) Thompson of Sheffield, IA; nephews and niece.

Edith May Johnson died on May 4, 2011 in Kansas City, KS.

A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, July 5, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 819 Main Street, Osage, IA.

In lieu of flowers memorials to the First United Methodist Church or the Mitchell County 4-H Foundation are requested.
