Harriet Ann Peterson

Harriet Ann Peterson was born August 29, 1945 in Albert Lea, MN. to Henry and Alice (Christian) Peterson of Scarville, Ia.

She attended school and graduated from Lake Mills High School in 1963. She then attended Austin Area Vocational School (now Riverland College), Austin, Mn where she was certified as a Licensed Practical Nurse upon graduation.

She was united in marriage to Warren Willand, April 25, 1964 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Scarville, Iowa and from this union three children were born. For 41 years she worked as a Nurse the last 7 years at the Mercy Medical Clinic, Northwood. In addition to her career she served as a Caregiver to her immediate and extended family countless sutures, fractures, illnesses & hospitalizations were treated under her guidance.

Harriet was fond of traveling, her eight grandkids, reading books on her Kindle, playing organ and piano, fishing and reading in a boat.at the same time. Also she was a collector of many Angel figurines. She was known for her many years of organ playing at First Lutheran Church and surrounding area churches.

She is preceded in death by both of her parents, father-in-law, Walter Willand; brother, Harlan Peterson; sister-in-law Joyce Willand and nephew, Ryan Peterson.

 The family members who were graced by her life were Warren Willand (Husband of 46 years), her three children, Wesley, his wife Linda; their children Walter and Elizabeth; Sara and her husband Steve and their children Spencer, Skyler, Sawyer and Sage and Dan and his wife Jennifer and their children Ian and Alex. Mother-in-Law Ellnora Willand. Brother Homer Peterson and his wife Penny. Along with Wayne Willand and his wife Beverly, brother-in-law; Ward Willand and his wife Emilie; and Linda Peterson sister-in-law. And several nieces and nephews.

Alta Farlinger

Alta Marie Farlinger, age 96 of Lyle, died at Good Samaritan Center in St. Ansgar, Iowa Friday afternoon, February 25, 2011. She was born November 24, 1914 to Clyde C. and Orcelia (Culp) Dilling in Grand Meadow, Minnesota.

She grew up in Albert Lea and married John Henry Farlinger on January 10, 1935 in Northwood, Iowa. They made their home in the London area until 1943 when they moved to a farm near Lyle and St. Ansgar.

John passed away on February 11, 1979. A homemaker and farmwife, Alta was very involved in Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Lyle, teaching Sunday School, Bible School and singing in the choir. She also held many offices in WELCA and mission circles.

She spent much of her time with the grandchildren and great grandchildren and loved to cook, travel and work in her flower garden. Alta went to the nursing home in October of 2007. Survivors include one son, Earl (Marlene) Farlinger of St. Ansgar, Iowa; four grandchildren, Craig (Pat) Farlinger of West Liberty, Iowa; Carlton (Lisa) Farlinger of St. Ansgar, Iowa; Curtis (Lori) Farlinger of Sheridan, Wyoming; Clinton (Amy) Farlinger of Cresco, Iowa; eight great grandchildren, Clare (Beth) LeMay, John (May) Farlinger, Caleb Farlinger, Marisa Farlinger, Melissa (Russell) Miller, Katie Farlinger, Amy Farlinger and Mark Farlinger; ten great, great grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Pat Dilling of North Carolina; Alta (Norman) Joynes of Austin; brother-in-law, Clifford Medina of Florida; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John; great grandson, Lucas; nine brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, March 5, 2011 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Lyle with Pastor Barbara Finley- Shea officiating. Friends may call from 4:00 to 7:00 Friday at Worlein Funeral Home in Austin and at the church one hour prior to the service. Interment is at Woodbury Cemetery, rural Lyle.

Alvina Bruggeman

St. Ansgar, IA—Alvina Bruggeman, 91, passed away Wednesday, March 2, 2011 at Good Samaritan Care Center in St. Ansgar, IA.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, March 5, 2011 at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Toeterville, with Rev. Barbara Finley-Shea officiating. Burial was in St. Peter Cemetery, Toeterville, IA.

Alvina LaVonne Adams was born July 4, 1919 in Mitchell County, IA to Leo and Julia (Gartner) Adams.

On February 26, 1938 she married Clarence Bruggeman. They farmed one mile east of Toeterville and then moved one mile north of Toeterville. In 1945 they purchased a farm two miles north of Toeterville and lived there until 1971, then built a home in St. Ansgar.

She became a resident at Good Samaritan Care Center in St. Ansgar on December 30, 2010, and really enjoyed and appreciated the loving care she received. She was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church. She enjoyed being a member of Ladies Aid, cutting bars for Fish Fry, cutting pies for Memorial Day dinner, gardening and canning, rummage sales at Eldon and Anita’s home, visiting with children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchild Alvina and Clarence spent many enjoyable hours making windmills and many other woodcrafts. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband Clarence, and parents.

Alvina is survived by her children (Lorraine (Leo) Kofoot, Eldon (Anita) Bruggeman, Donna (Paul) Finstuen, six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and one sister, Maxine Bruggeman. She also enjoyed her step-brothers and sisters.


Delores Johnson

Northwood – Delores Jean Johnson, 81, Northwood, died Friday, March 11, 2011, at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.

A funeral service for Delores will be held at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, March 15, 2011, at the Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Ave. South, Northwood, with Pastor Barbara Wills officiating. Burial will be at the South Shell Rock Cemetery, rural Northwood. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service time on Tuesday at the chapel.

Delores Jean (Hrubetz) Johnson was born on June 16, 1929, in rural Kensett, the daughter of Edward and Nina (Helgeson) Hrubetz. She was baptized and reaffirmed the faith of her baptism through confirmation at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Kensett. Delores attended school in Kensett, and graduated from Kensett High School.

During her life, Delores was a home care giver for the elderly. Delores also enjoyed being a home maker on their farm in rural Northwood. Delores was united in marriage to Omer Dean Johnson on October 21, 1950, at the Lutheran Parsonage in Northwood.

Omer preceded her in death on January 5, 2008. Delores enjoyed canning, her vegetable garden, and bird watching, but her greatest love and enjoyment was her family and grandchildren. Delores was a member of First Lutheran Church in Northwood, and the Sarah Circle at the church.

Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Dennis (Janelle) Johnson of Northwood, Janice (Dennis) Finch of Carpenter, and Bret Johnson of Northwood; five grandchildren, Aric Finch, Jay (Jaime) Johnson, Jack Johnson and his fiancé Jamie Hindley, Ben Johnson, and Brock Johnson; three great grandchildren, Jacey Finch, and Sasha and Brynn Johnson; many nieces, nephews, and many other extended family members and friends; and the family dog Buddy.

Delores was preceded in death by her parents, husband Omer, two brothers, Dale and Lee Hrubetz, and a sister, Luella Roggeman.
Frances Christiansen

St. Ansgar, IA—Frances Lucille Christiansen, 88, formerly of St. Ansgar, passed away Monday, March 21, 2011 at Windhaven Assisted Living in Cedar Falls, IA.

Funeral services was held Thursday, March 24, 2011 at 10:30 at First Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar with Rev. Robert Porisch officiating. Burial will be in First Lutheran Cemetery, St. Ansgar. Visitation was held Wednesday evening from 5:00-7:00 PM at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, 207 S. School Street, St. Ansgar.

Frances was born August 13, 1922 on the Hofler Century Farm northeast of Nora Springs, IA to Edward and Grace (Forbes) Hofler. She attended country school through the 8th grade and graduated from Nora Springs high school. She furthered her education at Iowa State Teachers College, Cedar Falls, IA.

Frances then taught country school at Prairie Center until the time of her marriage to Larry Christiansen in June of 1944. They lived on various naval bases during WWII and returned to start farming in Mitchell County. Frances enjoyed serving as a Sunday School teacher, 4-H leader, President of the Ladies Aid, church circle and various other community services. She was confirmed in the Lutheran faith on May 26, 1957.

She was preceded in death by her husband Larry Christiansen, parents Edward and Grace Hofler and sister Marcella Howe.

Frances is survived by two daughters, Janice (Richard) Stanco of Brookfield, CT and Shirley Fossey of Waterloo, IA; three grandsons, Todd (Marissa) Fossey of Plymouth, MN, Ben (Melissa) Fossey of Minnetonka, MN, Tim (Amy) Fossey of Otsego, MN; two step-grandchildren, Steve (Barbara) Stanco of Danbury, CT and Suzanne (Fraser) Payne of Hiawassee, GA; four great-grandchildren, Robyn Stanco, Rowan and Addison Fossey, and Mason Fossey; and three sisters Patricia Little, Aline Sutton and Anita Gerk.

Memorial donations may be directed to First Lutheran Church, Cedar Valley Hospice and Windhaven Assisted Living where Frances recently made her home in Cedar Falls, IA.
